Grandview Terrace couple shares how to enjoy life through laughter and planning for their future

fter 46 years of marriage, Bill and Mildred Price still make each other laugh. The couple, who moved into Sun Health Senior Living’s Grandview Terrace in Sun City West in 2015, is actively involved in the retirement community. Today they not only appreciate their new lifestyle, but also are maintaining peace of mind – while having fun – as they plan for their future.

Making the move The New Jersey natives decided to head west following their retirement in 1996. After 33 years as educators, the Prices wanted to escape the cold winters. They bought a home in Prescott, where they spent 19 years together.

It wasn’t until they received a postcard in the mail that they learned about Grandview Terrace.

“We listened to the presentation and called to schedule a tour,” Bill

recalls. “The idea that we would be looked after in a Life Care community was very intriguing and exactly what we needed.”

The pair was pleasantly surprised to learn that a firstfloor unit, typically in high demand for pet owners like the Prices, was available.

“We ultimately chose a two-bedroom, very spacious floorplan,” Bill says. “We are very comfortable here.”

first introduced you to Life Care in October. Since then, nearly 150 residents have joined the Sun Health Senior Living family in one of our three award-winning communities – Grandview Terrace, La Loma Village and The Colonnade. Using his background in education, Bill voluntarily teaches a weekly English class to Spanish-speaking Grandview Terrace staff. The program is funded by a community-based scholarship to cover textbooks and tutoring expenses.

Mildred also volunteers at the Grandview Terrace Health and Rehabilitation Center on campus by wheeling residents to social gatherings and helping out at monthly events. When she’s not volunteering, she takes part in many events and activities, including those offered through the nearby Sun Health Center for Health & Wellbeing.

Preparing for the future While the Prices aren’t slowing down any time soon, they feel confident and secure in their choice to ultimately reside at a Life Care community.

“This was a new concept for us,” Bill says. “There were retirement communities up in Prescott but none of them offered Life Care and we knew we had to take care of ourselves. Our Grandview home also has nurses and doctors available, if needed. And, if one of us ever needs a higher level of care, it’s right here. We’ve made sure we planned for our future.”

Sun Health at Home is a new, nonprofit continuing care at home program that offers its members personal care coordination along with a wealth of health and wellness services. It’s a refreshing alternative to long-term care insurance that checks off a lot of boxes for healthy individuals age 55 and better who wish to age in

place. What’s more, the program offers something else quite special: abundant opportunities for members to participate in life-enriching social, wellness, athletic and educational programs.

To that end, she notes, Sun Health at Home members have an opportunity to participate in a number of offerings at Sun Health's popular Centers for Health & Wellbeing. With locations in Surprise, Sun City and Litchfield Park, it is much more than just a fitness center. The Centers also offer health education seminars on timely topics such as diabetes, prediabetes, fall prevention, nutrition and healthful cooking. As a benefit of Sun Health at Home, members can enjoy an annual nutrition review with a registered dietitian, a fitness evaluation and personal exercise plan created by an exercise physiologist, a medication review with a pharmacist and take part in an evidence-based annual health and wellness assessment. Members also have access to the services

of an acupuncturist and massage therapist at discounted rates.

Sun Health at Home also offers members opportunities to be involved in activities they enjoy while interacting with others in their community. Members receive a monthly activities calendar that not only includes social events they may wish to attend, such as happy hour gatherings and breakfast programs, but also classes and programs focusing on topics such as art, tai chi, nutrition and wellness and line dancing, to name just a few.

Sun Health at Home members, who pay a one-time membership fee as well as monthly service fees based on age and plan selected, can also go on an occasional field trip and other special programming. Members aren’t required to attend anything, of course, but the fact that they’re offered close to home in the West Valley — and typically free of charge — makes them all but irresistible.

“We just launched in January, so as this program grows, we’ll be adding even more to the calendar,” Terri adds. “It’s all about keeping our members engaged and healthy.”

Indeed, Bill has devoted his professional and personal life to serving others. His list of contributions is as long as it is varied: Physician.

United States Public Health Service officer. Community mentor. Church volunteer. Nonprofit supporter.

Philanthropist.

Bill and his wife Mildred have extended this philosophy of giving to Sun Health Foundation.

gift annuity to support the Foundation’s efforts to provide care throughout the community. Bill also has served on committees for the Foundation, and even has volunteered as an assistant chaplain at Banner Boswell Medical Center.

“Everybody owes something to the community,” Bill says. “Being involved with a nonprofit organization such as Sun Health Foundation is my way of supporting community endeavors.”

Bill and Mildred have been active members of the community since moving to Arizona in the 1970s. But Bill’s life of public service began in his hometown of Louisville. “The south end of town, not the west end where

Muhammad Ali grew up,” Bill says, referring to the late boxing legend and hometown hero.

In a twist of fate, the two would meet decades later at a Phoenix hospital where the champ was visiting patients to buoy their spirits.

“We were both a long way from Louisville,” Bill says.

As Bill began charting his course in medicine, he met and married Mildred. “We met at a church camp at a YWCA,” Bill recalls. “See what a lucky guy I am?”

That fateful meeting led to another life-changer. While vacationing, the married couple visited the naval

hospital in Jacksonville, Fla. A physician there suggested that Bill consider joining the United States Public Health Service.

Bill soon launched a two-decade career in public service. A position as chief of medicine at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center brought the couple to Arizona. They put down roots and raised their four children. Bill later transitioned from captain in the Public Health Service to a private practice, working with several Valley hospitals and a major health plan.

When Bill retired in 1991, he kept volunteering. Getting involved with Sun Health Foundation was a natural fit. Bill played a key role on the board’s annual giving donor relations committee.

By establishing a charitable gift annuity, Bill and Mildred realize tax benefits, will receive quarterly payments for the rest of their lives, and also support the Foundation’s work in the community. The importance of that work became especially clear when both Bill and Mildred received care at Banner Boswell Medical Center.

“It’s important to have good facilities and close by,” Bill says. “Having two hospitals, a research institute, “Everybody owes and nationally something to the recognized community“ community health programs within a 10-mile radius is very important.”

That is what continues to drive the couple’s support of the Foundation. “It’s a way to give back and to improve available medical care,” Bill says. “It is also why, in addition to the charitable gift annuity, we have provided a gift through our estate to ensure superior health care in this community continues.”

Sweat Follow these tips to stay true to your exercise regimen in the summer months By Cara LaBrie

T

he heat is well upon us. No matter the hour, it's hot — so hot, the last thing that most of us want to do is exercise. But it's possible to stay healthy and fit in the summer. It just requires a little bit of creativity.

"A lot of times it comes down to modifying your routine," says Rhonda Zonoozi, Sun Health exercise physiologist and certified

health and wellness coach. "If you're used to taking a walk after lunch outdoors, then perhaps choose to go earlier in the morning, or later at night when the sun goes down."

Move indoors One way to stay healthy, and keep cool, is to move your daily exercise routine indoors. Use a local gym or walk around an indoor mall. There are plenty of ways to keep moving, all in air-conditioned comfort.

"We encourage people to find times to move throughout the day," Rhonda says. "Move more, sit less."

If you're looking for a way to stay motivated, Rhonda recommends getting an exercise buddy. Find a friend or neighbor, and set a schedule to meet for exercise.

Whether it's taking a swim, walking around a track or walking a dog, having a companion for your exercise can help you stay motivated and committed to your health.

Depending on your physical condition, most experts recommend getting 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week, plus strength exercises two to three times each week.

And after you exercise, you'll feel the rewards.

"If you plan every Wednesday to meet your friend to go to the gym and walk on the treadmills together, you know she's going to be there," Rhonda says. "And after the exercise, you're feeling better, your spirits are lifted, your stress level has reduced. You're thinking, 'I want to feel this way again and again and again.’"

Staying safe You need to stay hydrated whether the thermometer reads 105 degrees or 75 degrees. And if you're outside alone, make sure someone knows your plans.

"You should always listen to your body and know your own limitations, take frequent rest breaks in a shaded area if you do choose to exercise outdoors," Rhonda suggests.

STAYING HYDRATED IN THE HEAT

N

o matter the time of year, it's important to stay hydrated. Sun Health Registered Dietitian Susan Welter suggests these tips for staying hydrated in the heat.

• D rink before you exercise: Make sure you're hydrated before you start to exercise, and continue to hydrate while you're exercising.

• S nacks are good: To give you a boost of energy — and hydration — have a snack 30 minutes before you exercise.

Bread, fruits, nuts and yogurt are good choices.

• L ook before you flush: Curious if you're dehydrated?

The color of your urine might offer a clue. A pale-yellow color indicates that you're hydrated. Some medications and supplements, however, can affect the color of your urine.

• Choose water-rich fruits and veggies: Watermelon, cucumbers, oranges, strawberries, tomatoes, grapefruit and broccoli aren't just delicious, they're also great for hydrating.

They all contain more than 90 percent water.

INGREDIENTS 1 tsp. Toasted sesame oil 3 oz. Chicken tenders, finely diced, with all visible fat discarded 2 Medium green onions, finely chopped ½ Small red bell pepper, finely chopped 2 Medium button mushrooms, finely chopped

1/2 c. Packaged shredded cabbage and carrot coleslaw mix 1 tsp. Grated, peeled ginger root 1 Medium garlic clove, minced 1 tsp. Sweet chili sauce or ¼ tsp. crushed red pepper flakes 1 tsp. Low-sodium soy sauce 1 tsp. Rice vinegar 4 Large, whole lettuce leaves (romaine, Boston or iceberg)

INSTRUCTIONS In a small, nonstick skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat, swirling to coat the bottom.

Cook the chicken for 3 to 4 minutes, or until golden on the outside and no longer pink inside, stirring frequently. Transfer to a plate.

In the same skillet, cook the green onions, bell pepper, mushrooms, and coleslaw mix for about 4 minutes, or until the bell pepper is tender, stirring frequently.

Stir in the cooked chicken. Add the soy sauce and rice vinegar. Cook for 45 seconds to 1 minute, stirring frequently. Remove from heat.

Put the lettuce leaves on a flat surface. Spoon about a quarter of the chicken and vegetable mixture down the center of each leaf. Roll tightly. Enjoy!

Self-Management and Prevention

The Sun Health Center for Health & Wellbeing taught by Tracy Garrett and Susan Welter, registered dietitians and certified diabetes educators, and Rhonda Zonoozi, exercise physiologist.

DIABETES Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) This eight-week course provides the guidance needed to help prevent diabetic complications and improve overall health. The DSME program is fully covered by Medicare and most insurance providers.

PRE-DIABETES The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is a 12-week series for people with pre-diabetes, a condition between “normal” and “diabetes” that increases the risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Instructors use evidence-based practices to help prevent or delay onset of the disease.
