uilding a home up north can be a bit different than choosing to build a home here in the Valley of the Sun — especially with respect to the heating and cooling systems, the style of the home and even the materials selected for the finishes. Heating and cooling For example, in Pine Canyon, a luxury home community in Flagstaff, some folks say that — obviously unlike in the Phoenix area — you won’t use air conditioning very often. “Flagstaff is generally 25 to 30 degrees cooler than Phoenix, so air conditioning is rarely needed,” said Deana Keck, executive vice president of community development for Pine Canyon. “Most residents find that a well-insulated home helps keep their homes comfortable in the summer with a little help from open windows and doors to bring in the cool morning and evening air.” For heating, Keck said, buyers have many choices. Most residents use forced heat, she said. “Radiant heating in the floors and fireplaces that are designed to keep relatively large areas warm are other options. Many Pine Canyon residents prefer natural gas fireplaces, due to the ease and convenience [of gas versus a wood-burning fireplace].”
