DC Ranch’s Tour de Scottsdale is riding high this year to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its beneficiary, the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy.

The Conservancy is made up of nearly 500 volunteers, many of whom are DC Ranch residents, who assist the City of Scottsdale in maintaining the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Now in its 13th year, the Tour is a partnership between the Conservancy and DC Ranch that shows the power of teamwork.

Speaking of teamwork, 30 cycling teams are riding in this year’s Tour, ranging in size from five cyclists to more than 150. This month’s cover story explores what it takes to develop a successful team and offers tips for finishing strong.

Even if you or your family are not cyclists, there is still plenty of fun to be had at this year’s Tour de Scottsdale on Oct. 9. In addition to the free expo and live music in the plaza, several Market Street restaurants and businesses will host a “Tour de Market Street,” which you can read about on page 11.

I hope to see you bright and early (maybe not as early as our 3 a.m. crew call) for this year’s ride!

Ranch Updates Neighbors helping neighbors ‘Tis the

F

all is in the air as temperatures begin to cool, but the heat will be on as the Neighborhood Voting Member election gets underway. There are 43 NVMs within DC Ranch who are elected by their individual neighborhoods on an annual basis. Much of what you see around the community is possible because of the hard work and volunteerism of these exemplary residents who represent their neighbors on Ranch Association matters, including those requiring a vote. NVMs represent the consensus of their neighborhood by electing members to the Ranch Association Board of Directors. Their tasks vary from greeting new residents with a special gift and heartwarming smile, to surveying neighbors about new policies or changes. Most NVMs regularly attend board meetings and communicate often with the neighbors they represent.

NVMs are welcoming and approachable.

They are the direct liaisons to the Ranch Association and provide the grass roots input that’s so important in keeping DC Ranch residents connected.

The NVM election kicks off next month and is open to all residents. Candidates must own property in the neighborhood they wish to represent and may only serve for one neighborhood. The goal is to have all neighborhoods represented, so if yours is one without an NVM, think about running for the position. New NVMs receive training and tools to help make them effective volunteers.

The requirements can be tailored to fit most schedules and lifestyles. NVMs are residents just like you. It’s a great way to serve the community, meet neighbors and build lifelong friendships. Several special events are held throughout the year that make serving all the more fun!

Lighted athletic field to be built in DC Ranch Great Hearts Academies purchased three lots in the DC Ranch Corporate Center to build a football/soccer field to be used by Scottsdale Preparatory for high school practices and games. State law allows for this development. It also excludes schools from the city zoning process and DC Ranch Design Guidelines and CC&Rs. On Aug. 18, a community meeting was held with Great Hearts staff seeking input on how they might mitigate resident concerns. Approximately 50 residents were present for the discussion.

t’s the most wonderful time of the year as the community readies for festivities and holiday celebrations. Outdoor seasonal lights and displays are permitted October 1 through January 15 so get creative and decorate. Please be considerate of neighbors and be sensitive to light and noise levels when installing decorative lighting or items. From Halloween through the New Year, it’s time to add those finishing touches that make home the place where everyone wants to be for the holidays. 2016 Resident Survey–ends Oct. 10 DC Ranch conducts a resident survey every three years to better understand the demographics, interests, and preferences of community members. Check your email for a link to the survey and take a few minutes to fill out the anonymous online questionnaire on behalf of your household.

Since the meeting, the Community Council sought a third legal opinion which confirmed the development is allowed. DC Ranch management also met with six representatives from The Estates neighborhood. In addition, the City of Scottsdale has confirmed that street parking is not allowed on Palo Brea Bend, 91st Street north of Palo Brea, nor along 94th Street.

The next step is for the Community Council to see if residents want to participate in a constructive dialogue with the school to discuss how best to integrate into the neighborhood.

DC Ranch Standards compliance procedures approved The DC Ranch Standards for Homes, Conduct and Landscape are official. All guidelines have been reviewed and approved by DC Ranch management, and reasonable compliance processes have been established. The documents and supporting information are now available on DCRanch.com in the Standards and Guidelines section. Compliance to the Standards relies on self-assessment by residents. Its success is dependent on homeowners voluntarily adhering to the standards for home care, landscape maintenance, and being a good neighbor. There will not be a significant step-up of reviews as compliance to the Standards is being gradually rolled out. Inspections during the sale of a home or for a modification will be more thorough than those based on casual observance.

Residents will soon receive a Homeowner’s Guide, specific to their neighborhood, which includes a summary of the DC Ranch Standards for Homes, Conduct and Landscape. Please note that the landscape zone maps and plant palettes in your booklet are customized to the specific area in the community in which you live. Teaming up for the Tour

hen riders line up on Market Street at DC Ranch for the 13th annual Tour de Scottsdale on Oct. 9, there will be an explosion of colorful Lycra and a spirit of intense anticipation as they get ready for a challenging and scenic course. The start is electric, the riding is hard work, and the finish is euphoric!

"In our various rides, our team is going for the podium,” says Two Wheel Jones leader Tricia Jones. “We work with our team’s strengths and weaknesses to help everyone get better. It’s harder to meet competitive time goals when you ride on your own.”

A lot of riders hit the course as individuals, or in small groups. But each year, the Tour attracts teams who pull together to find camaraderie, technical support, and mentorship as they train and ride with each other to the finish. Let’s look at a handful of teams that come back for the Tour year after year.

Two Wheel Jones has participated in the Tour since 2009, with 15-20 riders including Anna Sanders Sparks, the 2014 first place finisher, and Jennifer Camoriano, who finished second in 2015.

The Global Bikes team has been riding in the Tour de Scottsdale since it began in 2004, with 15-30 riders, depending on the year. Most of them ride the 70-miler, but they encourage all new cyclists to try the 30-mile route if it is their first official cycling event.

Training tip Start hydrating 2-3 days before the ride with lots of water, electrolytes and whole foods that have high water content. Get your bike tuned up a week before the event. And bring plenty of tubes, inflation cartridges, food and water, plus a tool kit.

“[The 30-mile] ride is very well supported and the perfect event to try for the first time,” said Brandee Lepak of Global Bikes. “Riding in a team gives a feeling of confidence knowing you are not alone and you can work together to accomplish your goal. And the best part of riding in the Tour de Scottsdale is seeing and riding with our friends from across the Valley.”

Training tip “You never know what the weather will be like for this event. We could still be in our hot season, so being properly hydrated and nourished for this event is a huge key to success. This is something all experienced cyclists are well aware of, but for the new riders we like to remind everyone to be well prepared,” commented Lepak.

The Bicycle Ranch team’s 15 riders have been in the Tour for eight years, usually taking on the 70-mile. In addition to the team’s camaraderie, knowing how team members respond to the road is a big plus, especially for riders with time goals. Riding in a group with predictable riding patterns, fitness levels, and attitude helps, advises Markus Zimmer of Bicycle Ranch.

Training tip Ride the most difficult parts of the route before the event. “You don’t have to go through the whole ride for training, but get familiar with the climbs and descents—like Palisades and Saguaro up Shea,” commented Zimmer. He also suggests riders go on a few group rides, especially if this is the first big ride they’re doing. “It’s important to know how to ride behind people—some people get a little nervous until they get used to it,” he commented.

Training tip Master the basics—little things like how to reach for a water bottle, or how to conquer hills. Boothe likes training with high-elevation rides in Flagstaff.

Arizona Team Younglife will be riding the Tour for the 5th time this year and its riders are hard to miss—they’ve been the largest team for the past three years, with 135 riders in 2015 and more expected in 2016. Team leader Jon Boothe relishes the community building that comes with training, riding and hanging out as a team.

The group focuses on students in junior and senior high and college, “investing in the lives of kids” through Christian fellowship and mentoring. Team members come from all over the state, ranging in age from 12 to 70 years old.

Bicycle Ranch has a Thursday evening group ride that covers about 22 miles, and a 50-mile Saturday morning ride of the ABC variety: the A group are “hammerheads” pushing their pace to the max; Bs are “weekend warriors” who like to pack in some fairly fast miles; and Cs are building their skills and confidence on the bike.

Just in case you think it’s cutthroat out there, Jones recounts a memorable story of compassion and cooperation. During her first Tour ride, Jones ran out of water four miles from the finish. Thirsty and hot, she was desperate to rehydrate and even contemplated a time-burning convenience store detour. Then another rider noticed her distress and offered her his water bottle so she could finish the ride. Small gift—big impact.

Cutting-edge advancements offer new options for breast cancer detection

demonstrate a form of increased heat, and some neurological processes show excessive cold, or hypothermia. Breast disease can be detected by looking for areas of excessive or increasing heat that may indicate areas of angiogenesis, or increase of blood vessels supplied by a growing tumor.

BY DR. JEOFF DROBOT | AMERICAN CENTER FOR BIOLOGICAL MEDICINE early 3.5 million US women and men with a history of breast cancer are alive today thanks in part to continued medical advancements in treating the disease.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, the American Center for Biological Medicine in Scottsdale highlights innovative preventive health solutions. The science behind early breast cancer detection has been evolving, and technology and testing have provided women with options in taking a proactive approach to breast health. Non-invasive digital scanning and urinary hormone evaluation provide women with an additional and comprehensive approach to complete breast health awareness.

Mammography has been the standard diagnostic breast imaging tool that uses low-dose x-rays to detect early cancerous changes in the breast. Digital breast thermography is a testing measure that can be used for breast screening for those women who are seeking an alternative to the use of x-ray. A University of Wisconsin study shows 70 percent of tumors can be identified on a thermogram eight to 10 years prior to a mammogram.

More than 200,000 cases of breast cancer are reported annually in women under the age of 40. This population has not been typically screened by the traditional breast cancer mammography. When cancer strikes younger women, it is typically a more aggressive form and is less likely to respond to treatment. There is currently no other routine screening test for women under 40. Thermography is an ideal test for this age group considering it is a radiation-free screening.

Research has also shown that early detection with urine testing can help unravel the underlying hormone imbalance that may precipitate breast cancer. The DUTCH (Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones) test from Precision Analytical allows patients to monitor several hormones that may play a role in breast cancer. Lower levels of melatonin and progesterone may be associated with increased risks for breast cancer. Higher levels of estrogen and specifically 4-OH estrogens (these metabolites can uniquely damage DNA) may be associated with increased risk for breast cancer. Stress also plays a role in the development of cancer and testing cortisol can be important as well.

The most comprehensive test available for a woman’s levels of cortisol, melatonin, progesterone, estrogens and their metabolites is the DUTCH test. The testing involves collecting four urine specimens at specific times of the day. The information gathered is unmatched in providing an in depth view in to the intricate hormonal imbalance that can lead to pathological breast health.

As a whole, researchers around the world continue to find new ways to prevent, detect, and treat breast cancer. Moreover, better understanding of the human body’s biological process helps improve the overall quality of life for patients and survivors.
