Ranch Updates End of operating credit will increase Association assessments

2017

Ranch Association assessment notifications will arrive by mail in December and will include an increase that is primarily attributed to phasing out what has been referred to as the “operating credit.” In 2010, the Ranch Association ended the year with a surplus due to expenses being lower than the amount collected in assessments.

The Board decided to return the surplus to the neighborhoods by creating an “operating credit” spread out over six years, scheduled to end December 2016.

The credit paid for approximately $400,000 in total expenses per year that must now be covered by resident assessments. Each neighborhood operated with a different percent of the operating credit, thus the assessment increase varies by neighborhood. Residents will also see smaller, additional increases due to cost of living adjustments and specific neighborhood needs.

Following work sessions, each board will approve its budget: Nov. 10 for Community Council and Nov. 14 for Ranch Association. Residents and commercial property owners will receive budget and assessment details by mail before Dec. 1.

Ballots for electing 2017 Neighborhood Voting Members will also be included in the mailing. Ballots are due back to The Ranch Offices by Friday, Dec. 9, at 5 p.m.

Sterling at Silverleaf open house showcased changes to condominium project Residents attended an open house on Sept. 20 to view the new concept plans for Sterling at Silverleaf, a luxury condominium project planned for the east side of Canyon Village.

DMB Associates, in partnership with The New Home Company, plans to construct 72 units spread across eight buildings. A previous developer had planned for more than 200 units. Residences start at $1.6 million. Groundbreaking is anticipated for early 2017.

here are many handy tools available to help residents comply with DC Ranch Standards. Homeowners can request assistance from the Ranch Association’s Community Standards team, which will share their expertise on painting, landscaping and exterior home maintenance. Many resources can be found on DCRanch.com including the complete Standards for Homes, Conduct and Landscape, brochures, neighborhood-specific landscape maps, plant lists and links to the design guidelines.

Many residents find that a courtesy inspection is very useful, especially before selling

By identifying areas in need of attention prior to listing your home, a courtesy inspection helps ensure that transfer and disclosure at the time of sale goes smoothly.

DC Ranch Women’s Club offers warmth with PJs

Nothing is more comforting than a cozy pair of pajamas for the holidays.

For many years, DC Ranch resident Julie Olson has worked with the nonprofit Pajama Program to collect warm sleepwear and books for children in need.

“I became involved with this charity in 2008 after winning a $500 gift certificate to Stein Mart. I used the funds to buy 50 pairs of PJs for the program,” said Olson. “My friend and local Curves owner, Laverne Henson, then collected 100 books from the members.”

The DC Ranch Women’s Club chose the Pajama Program for its annual charity drive and will collect pajamas as part of its holiday gathering on Thursday, Dec. 8.

“While this is a national charity, we partner with more than 50 receiving organizations in the Phoenix area,” added Olson. “All donations will go to local children in need. We are thrilled to be chosen by the DC Ranch Women’s Club as the event beneficiary!”

Pajama Program provides new pajamas and new books to children in need nationwide, many of whom are waiting to be adopted. These children live in group homes, shelters and temporary housing facilities and are often shuffled from one place to another. Many of them have been abandoned, abused or neglected.

Donate a gift for the Giving Tree For more than 15 years, DC Ranch residents have donated Christmas gifts to make the holidays a little brighter for Valley children and families in need.

This year, DC Ranch’s partner charity, Homeward Bound, is offering its families a chance to select items for family members, instead of receiving a prepared box of gifts. Children will go “shopping” in one room for their parents, while parents will choose items for their children in another. Volunteers will then wrap the gifts.

A taste of home for the holidays Residents share treasured family traditions and favorite holiday foods

hat’s better than a gathering of family and friends to celebrate the season? Whether you live near or far from family, by honoring the traditions and recreating the foods that signify the best of the holidays, you’re pretty much guaranteed to feel nostalgia in your heart and mind.

When we asked Ranch residents for their special holiday traditions and favorite dishes, we were treated to a smorgasbord of memory makers. Maybe these will be the start of new traditions in your household.

Sisters Kathe Ogle and Laure Reynolds have special ways to celebrate with their families. Kathe shared this fun family custom: “Every year my daughter-inlaw, Michelle, and I pick out our Christmas-themed pants for the family, and I then take them to be altered to fit the kids. We have been doing this for the past nine or ten years and we have quite the collection! It has become a very special tradition for the whole family.”

For Laure Reynolds’ family, the annual Christmas Eve dinner has stood the test of time since their kids were toddlers. After attending the children’s Christmas Eve Mass at their church, they would go out for a family dinner. Just the four of them.

The early days brought many overturned water glasses, but as the children got a bit older, they began to enjoy many of the fine dining restaurants in the Valley.

One of the most memorable dinners was at the DC Ranch Fleming’s on Market Street. “We had seen friends at church earlier in the evening and shared our mutual plans for dinner. Their plans included their tradition of going to Grimaldi’s on Market Street,” recalled Laure.

“Halfway through dinner, from the very quiet dining room that we were seated in, we heard a bit of commotion. We quickly realized our friends had made their way from Grimaldi’s to Fleming’s.

Singing Christmas carols and weaving their way through the restaurant, they serenaded us along with all the other diners. What fun!”

“While sharing a lovely meal is always wonderful,” Laure says, “what has made this so special through the years—the “kids” are now 31 and 27—is that it has been something the four of us have shared. It has always been a time for us to pause and reconnect.

To reminisce and recall how blessed we are and how fortunate we have been to share our love of family.

Home is where the heart food is Favorite recipes connect the generations—each bite is a link to all the bakers and tasters who have feasted on the love that is served on a plate.

hari Lowe shared her favorite Mandel Brot recipe, a traditional Ashkenazi Jewish dessert dating back to the early 19th century that is closely related to Italian biscotti.

“My original recipe is in a cookbook my mom gave me in 1968,” Shari recalled. The cookbook was published in 1960 by the Beth El Ner Tamid Sisterhood in Mequon, Wisconsin. Shari has changed the recipe over the years, based on her family’s preferences. The cookies are so popular with her husband and grown children that she has to wrap them up tight and hide them!

Mandel Brot | Shari Lowe • 1 c. vegetable oil (Mazola) • 1 c. sugar • 4 eggs • 2 tsp. vanilla • 1/8 tsp. salt • 4 c. flour • 1 tsp. baking powder • 1 ½ c. semi-sweet chocolate chips Cream oil and sugar, add eggs and combine, then add vanilla. Sift dry ingredients and slowly add to sugar/egg mixture. Once dough is sticky and smooth, add chocolate chips. Scoop dough out and wrap in plastic wrap for 1-2 hours.

Lightly oil your hands and form about four long rows of dough down an ungreased cookie sheet. Space the rows apart as they will spread during baking. Pat each log down to flatten slightly.

Bake at 350°F for 30- 35 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven, cool slightly, and slice on the diagonal. This makes a soft cookie, which is how our family enjoys it. Sift powdered sugar over the top of the slices just before serving.

For a crisp twice-baked mandel bread cookie, slice log, turn each slice on its side, and bake at 250°F for about 15 minutes until crisp. Chopped nuts maybe added or used instead of chocolate. Sugar and cinnamon can be sprinkled on the dough just before baking.

helley Diakiw’s favorite treat is Nanaimo Bars, a popular Canadian dessert named after the west coast city of Nanaimo, British Columbia. They were always part of her family’s Christmas “dainty” platter. Dainties was their term for an assortment of cookies, squares and sweets—including lemon or cherry slices, chocolate mocha cookies, and English shortbread with red and green sprinkles—that were served at the holidays.

When she moved to the U.S., she found that most people had never heard of Nanaimo Bars and, more troubling, one of the main ingredients, Bird’s custard

powder, was completely unknown in the States. (It can be ordered online, or found in specialty grocery stores.) Her mother made them with walnuts, but she prefers them without. Either way, these cookies are out of this world!

A

nn Hightchew instantly thought of a family favorite, an easy dessert that can be made several days in advance and is a crowd-pleaser. Her mother and sisters all make it, too. It’s a great alternative to pumpkin pie, even for those who aren’t sure they like pumpkin.

Ann usually makes it the night before in a Pyrex pan; no need to jockey for oven space with this dessert.

Nanaimo Bars Shelley Diakiw • 1 c. plus 1 tsp. butter, divided • ½ c. granulated sugar • 5 tsp. cocoa • 1 tsp. vanilla • 1 egg • 1 c. coconut • ½ c. chopped walnuts (optional) • 2/3 c. graham cracker crumbs • 2 T. Vanilla custard powder • 2 T. milk • 2 c. icing sugar (powdered sugar) • 4 squares unsweetened or semi-sweet chocolate

Cook ½ c. butter, granulated sugar, cocoa, vanilla, and egg in top of double boiler until blended. Stir in coconut, nuts (if used), and graham crackers. Pack into 8x8 cake pan.

Cream ½ c. butter. Blend custard powder and milk; stir into butter. Add icing sugar, mix. Spread over crust in pan. Melt remaining butter and chocolate. Drizzle over filling. Cool slightly, then cut into squares. Refrigerate. Makes an 8x8 pan; double recipe for 13x9.

Pumpkin Ice Cream Squares Ann Hightchew • 1 c. ginger snap crumbs • 1/4 c. sugar • 1/4 c. butter, melted • 1 envelope gelatin • ¼ c. water • 1/2 c. pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling) • 1/2 tsp. salt • 1 tsp. cinnamon • ¼ tsp. ground ginger • ¼ tsp. nutmeg • 1 tsp. vanilla • 1 qt. vanilla ice cream Combine crumbs, sugar and butter, reserving 1/3 cup of mixture. Press remaining crumb mixture into 8x8-inch pan. Soften gelatin in water. Combine pumpkin, salt and spices in saucepan, then warm over low heat. Add gelatin and stir until it dissolves, then cool.

In chilled bowl, soften ice cream and fold in cooled pumpkin mixture. Pour over crumb crust; sprinkle reserved crumbs on top. Cover and freeze until firm. Cut into squares; let it soften a bit—about 10 minutes—before serving.

Serves 9. (Recipe can be doubled; use 13x9 pan.)

They had no director and no designers,” notes the Grassroots website. “Instead, the actors directed themselves, brought their own costumes and props, and relied on the sun to light them. In Elizabethan times, Shakespeare’s plays probably had unusual costumes and music, constant audience interaction, and a lot of improvisation.”

The result is a vibrant, high-energy performance, with beautiful language and fun music. This dark but funny production is great for ages 8 and above. Bring your own lawn chairs, blankets and snacks. Audience members are invited to talk back, boo, and cheer.

Nanotechnology involves chemistry, physics, biology and materials science at the molecular level, with the potential of creating materials that can change colors, protect surfaces from damage, or fix themselves. For example, at the nanoscale, silver is a very effective antibiotic. Scientists have found ways to carefully arrange carbon atoms into tiny “nanotubes” that are both incredibly light and incredibly strong.

His work combines the fields of science and technology studies, ethics, and public policy. He recently helped train staff from more than 50 science centers in how to engage the public in conversations about our collective future and how science and technology can help us reach that future.

Dr. Wetmore’s talk will explore both the present and the future of nanotechnology.

Audience members will have a chance to learn about an array of nanotechnologies that are currently available, and some that are being promised. They will spend about ten minutes playing an interactive game in which each person plays a character trying to solve their problems through a variety of nanotechnologies. The exercise offers a way to reflect on both the present and future of nanotechnology and help participants consider their role in the development of new science and technology.

hen you begin a job at the turn of the millennium, it’s easy to keep track of how long you’ve been working. Three staff members of The Country Club at DC Ranch are celebrating their “Sweet 16” anniversary at the Club this year: Cheri Farias, Director of Communications and Clubhouse Operations, Alfredo Garcia, Lead Server and Sommelier, and Melanie Halpert, Director of Membership. They recently took time out to talk about the special qualities that motivated them to stay with The Club for so many years.

“The most rewarding part of my job is watching new members meet lifelong friends at The Club,” commented Melanie Halpert. “So many of our members are new to the area and do not know anyone. The Club is known

Beloved traditions Farias: The Santa dinner is one of the magical events I look forward to each year. We have the “real” Santa here to greet the children and sit with each one of them to take their photo and get their wish list. It is an “organized chaos” kind of a night because the children get very excited with all of the activity!

Garcia: The Opening Party! When the Members arrive and see their friends, and the staff, the excitement is very high. There’s a lot of anticipation for the season ahead.

Halpert: I think one of the reasons our members love being at The Club is seeing so many of the staff members who have been here for 10, 15, 20 years!

They love that it feels like family.

Lasting memories Garcia: Years ago, a member told me golf was the easiest sport to play. She was a great golfer, and explained that

since the ball doesn’t move, it is easy to hit. Coming from Mexico, where golf is not a popular sport, I decided to try to learn. One of the golf pros gave me some basic tips, but after the explanation of the correct stance (shoulders, head, hips, feet, core, etc.) I realized it wasn’t so easy! Now I appreciate the game much more.

Farias: One of my favorite memories was when we surprised Paul Skelton, our COO at the time, with the Leadership Scholarship for ongoing education at The Club. We were preparing for our Grand Re-Opening of the clubhouse after renovation and he had just been inducted in the Golf Hall of Fame. Continuous education for the employees was one of his passions, so we started a scholarship in his name and surprised him with it on his birthday. It was a very special day at The Club for everyone.

Gateway Trailhead

Start your Thanksgiving Day with an MSC kind of parade. This is a fitness hike designed to burn off some calories and help you feel better about second helpings on Thanksgiving. Hikers will cover a 2½ mile loop with a 250-foot elevation gain in approximately 90 minutes. Best of all, it is appropriate for ages 8 and older.

Hikers will learn how desert plants, such a mistletoe and holly, and animals relate to the holiday season, discovering the hidden and festive desert connections. This is a 3-mile round trip hike with minimal elevation gain that will last about 2½ hours.

This hike is designed for anyone age 10 or older; arrive at the trailhead by 8:45 a.m.

Celebrate the new year with this ultimate workout! The views along this challenging hike should make the miles go faster. Allow four hours for this 7.2-mile round-trip hike with about a 1,500 ft. elevation gain. This hike is for hardy hikers only. Please arrive at the Trailhead by 8:45 am.

Explore some of the newest trails in the remote northeast section of the Preserve.

There is no significant elevation gain although there are plenty of ups and downs. Allow five hours for this 9-mile hike. Arrive at the trailhead, two miles north of Dynamite on 136 St, by 8:45 a.m.

This Christmas-day fitness hike covers the Gateway Loop and takes you into the heart of the McDowells. The 4½ mile loop takes three hours and includes a 700-feet elevation gain with amazing views. This hike is appropriate for ages 10 and older.

Arrive at the trailhead by 8:45 a.m.

Tour de Scottsdale raises funds and awareness about the Conservancy he 13th annual Tour de Scottsdale on Oct. 9 once again showcased the beautiful landscape in DC Ranch’s back yard, skirting the McDowell Sonoran Preserve and taking riders through scenic hills and cactus flats. Nearly 1,700 riders took off early in the morning, then enjoyed a lively post-ride Tour de Market Street with live music, a health expo, and special deals and discounts from Market Street restaurants and merchants. Produced by DC Ranch, a portion of each registration supports the Conservancy, plus additional donations and sponsorships.

Donate to charity Not only does donating benefit others, it provides you with a tax deduction. If that isn’t enough, you can donate appreciated stock and receive

both a tax deduction and legally avoid paying capital gains on the donated stock.

Revisit retirement planning Confirm that you are maximizing the use of your 401(k), 403(b) or other retirement accounts. After the end of the year you cannot make-up missed 2016 contributions. Thus you could short your retirement savings or fail to maximize your employer match.
