November is one of my favorite months in Scottsdale.

The return of beautiful weather also heralds the return of many residents amid exciting preparations for the holidays. What we lack in fall foliage here, we more than make up for with gorgeous days and balmy nights. The last two 20 for 20 DC Ranch anniversary hikes, Silverleaf on Nov. 3 and The McDowell Sonoran Preserve on Dec. 1, are an ideal way to enjoy our community’s bounty.

The fall also kicks off Scottsdale’s incredibly vibrant art scene. This year it seems to be even bigger than usual, with a whole month of activities around Scottsdale Contemporary Month. Venture down to the waterfront to see amazing public art, add to your collection, or find a unique holiday gift for someone special. Don’t forget nearby art celebrations and markets in Fountain Hills and Cave Creek, among others. We truly are surrounded by art!

The holidays provide one of the best times to bring family closer, not just across the table, but across the years. Take advantage of that closeness to write down or record your family history. Capture those personal memories and stories so they will live on through the generations.

Ranch Updates 2019 SECURITY SERVICES PROVIDER After months of research, resident input and an interview process that was conducted in an open session, DC Ranch Association’s Board of Directors awarded a three-year security services provider contract to Anderson Security Agency at its Oct. 1 meeting. The Board of Directors approved this change in the security provider to improve service levels and leadership in the security operation. Enhancements will include emergency medical response service, body cams for all security personnel, and snake removal services. Anderson Security Agency will begin its partnership with DC Ranch on Jan. 1, 2019, with Allied Universal continuing to provide security services through 2018.

Since the implementation of the Community Standards, there has been an uptick in owner-initiated home improvement requests.

Owners are doing their part by getting Modification Committee approval prior to starting on projects. It’s prudent to know what the Committee will approve prior to starting work. Forms for exterior modifications can be found on DCRranch.com under “My Home.” The Community Standards team is always available to help with advice on outdoor projects, including selecting an exterior paint color for a resident’s home or advising about landscape requirements.

Security Services and Standards

STANDARDS FOR CONDUCT, HOMES AND LANDSCAPE— TWO YEARS IN REVIEW

It’s been two years since the 2016 Community Standards were approved and implemented.

The Standards were developed by resident-driven committees and staff, including input during town hall meetings. It was a process that benefitted from a broad spectrum of perspectives and collective opinion. The Standards are intended to foster and preserve the physical beauty and harmony of DC Ranch, to protect home values, and to ensure clearly written guidelines for community conduct, homes and landscape. The Standards were designed to be easy to read and understand, making it convenient for residents to familiarize themselves with the community’s expectations concerning life at DC Ranch.

In the last two years, residents have demonstrated their support for the Standards. The overall sentiment is that owners want the community’s homes to look well-maintained, landscaping to meet the community’s original design criteria, and all

residents to pay attention to the regulations intended to help sustain our community’s excellence.

The community’s work on the standards is never done. For example, revisions were made earlier this year to the Standards for Conduct, prohibiting the use of drones in residential areas. In 2019, the Community Standards for Homes and Landscape will be reviewed to ensure their applicability in every regard.

With 2,700 homes in DC Ranch, it is vital that processes are in place to monitor standard requirements and prompt owners when corrections are needed. Community Standards department

What’s next? Currently, the Community Standards do not address the two apartment complexes, Desert Parks Vista and Camden Foothills. Apartment representatives, Association and Community Council staff are involved in a collaborative process to develop standards that align with the DC Ranch Community Standards. The ultimate success of our community’s appearance relies on a collective effort where all owners and residents understand and appreciate the benefits of a vigilant approach to making sure everyone does their part.

As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of DC Ranch, let’s also think about the next 20 years and commit to keeping the community as beautiful as it is today.

arly this November, both the Community Council and Ranch Association boards will formally vote to approve their 2019 budgets. The Ranch Association Board of Directors will vote at its Nov. 5 meeting set for 6 p.m. at The Homestead Community Center. The Community Council board will vote Nov. 8 at its 5:30 p.m. meeting at Desert Camp Community Center. Residents and commercial property owners will receive budget and assessment details by mail before Dec. 1.

At the same time, residents will receive ballots to elect Neighborhood Voting Members (NVMs). Election ballots are due back to The Ranch Offices by Friday, Dec. 14 at 5 p.m. and election winners will be announced on DCRanch.com on Dec. 21. New terms for NVMs begin Jan. 1, 2019.

Newsworthy Scottsdale needs you!

Are you interested in getting more engaged with the city of Scottsdale? The city’s 25 Boards and Commissions offer volunteer opportunities for residents to influence a variety of important and interesting areas. Here are some examples: • Judicial Appointments Advisory Board: makes recommendations to the City Council regarding the appointment and reappointment of full-time city judges

• Human Services Commission: reviews and recommends funding for city social service programs

• Transportation Commission: reviews transportation planning issues

• Library Board: advises the City Council on general policy related to the programs, services and future development of the Scottsdale Public Library system

Boards and Commissions enable more voices to engage in local government, and participation provides many thought-provoking experiences for people of all backgrounds. DC Ranch residents are currently serving on the Scottsdale Airport Advisory Commission, McDowell Sonoran Preserve Commission and possibly others.

The time commitment varies, with as few as two meetings per year to as many as nine or more. The city recently upgraded its online application process to encourage more residents to apply. City Council members review the applications and nominees are scheduled for brief interviews with the City Council at a public meeting.

More development in Corporate Center

Capital Industrial Holdings, LLC, which owns land in the DC Ranch Corporate Center (purchased from Great Hearts Academy in August), recently submitted building plans to the city of Scottsdale. The project consists of four two-story buildings totaling over 50,000 square feet. One building is dedicated to office space; the other three are a combination of office and warehouse space. In addition to city review, the DC Ranch Covenant Commission must approve the project.

Long known for its impressive public art program, Scottsdale Public Art is pulling out all the stops this fall.

Experience 10 consecutive days of wonder at the annual Canal Convergence Water + Art + Light along the Scottsdale Waterfront Nov. 9–18, with interactive artworks, hands-on activities and workshops, artist talks, and live music and dance performances.

This free event features 10 large-scale art installations by local, national and international artists. Some highlights:

Iceberg A playful, immersive, light and sound installation, this 67-foot-long tunnel employs user-activated lights and sounds to tell the story of an Arctic iceberg. Through Dec. 31.

Floatus 12 polished alu-

minum lotus sculptures floating on the canal come alive with LED lights and Floatus controlled flame effects that shoot up to 30 feet in the air.

The installation will have 28 fire shows spread across the event’s 10-day span.

30 mechatronic butterflies, with wingspans from 20 to 35 inches, create a kaleidoscopic spectacle of light, both day and night, with a palette that alters depending on the viewer’s vantage point.

E

veryone is familiar with Santa’s trusted stable of reindeer at the North Pole. But only a few elves in Santa’s inner circle know about his reindeer-in-training, Ralphie.

Unlike his reindeer friends, Ralphie tends to get distracted by his discoveries, which is how he came to be known as “Ralphie the Wayward Reindeer.”

He has a highly-cultivated love of plant life, maintaining a journal of plant species. Over time, his tireless search for new botanical specimens caused his nose and the shock of hair on his head to turn a bright shade of green.

One evening, Ralphie was on a training flight over the Arizona desert. He was awestruck by his first sight of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, as the full moon bathed DC Ranch and Market Street in a soft, magical glow. The constellations twinkled brighter than any night sky he had ever seen.

But what caught Ralphie’s eye was a sprig of white berries in a wash near Tom’s Thumb. He knew this was the elusive mistletoe, one of Santa and Mrs. Claus’ favorite Christmas plants! So he veered off his flight path to touch down, pluck the mistletoe and place it in his pocket for safekeeping.

Soon Ralphie realized he was hungry, and took a few bites of mistletoe.

It was irresistibly delicious, but he

didn’t realize that mistletoe is poisonous to most creatures.

Thankfully, Santa’s magic protected him from getting a tummy ache.

Then more magic happened: Ralphie became invisible, except for a glimmer of his bright green nose! The rest of Santa’s reindeer couldn’t find Ralphie. They called out his name, but they had to resume their flight back to the North Pole, as the sun was starting to rise over the mountain range.

Ralphie didn’t mind being left behind, because he had found his happy place. Desert plants grew everywhere, waiting to be documented in his botanical journal, and he learned he could make himself invisible whenever he feasted on his favorite berries.

If you observe the McDowell Mountains carefully at night, you might see a fluorescent green flash. That rare sight is Ralphie the Wayward Reindeer, dancing and playing pranks on his friends in the Preserve.

When Ralphie made the desert his home, he promised Santa he would magically appear at the merriest of all holiday happenings—Market Street’s Hot Cocoa Stroll—to keep the magic of Christmas alive for all the good boys and girls in DC Ranch and beyond. Be sure to say hello on Thursday, Nov. 29 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and give Ralphie the reindeer a high five when you spot him.

“We’re impressed with the management of the community, how the public areas are kept up, and the level of responsiveness to homeowner issues,” Herb said.

Barbara and Herb Winograd celebrated their 20th year at DC Ranch this summer—and they owe it all to the Phoenix Symphony Guild. Well, indirectly.

The Winograds escaped the frigid winters of Cleveland in 1972 and built a beautiful home in Paradise Valley. After 25 years there, they started to think, “What’s next?”

Barbara was active with the Phoenix Symphony Guild, and one of her friends had a connection to DC Ranch, so they went to take a look. It wasn’t easy to find. Intersecting dirt roads, no models, and a tiny sales office.

But Herb and Barbara liked the open space and the view of the mountains, so they picked a lot and worked to customize their home

He figures they were the oldest people to move into DC Ranch and are probably the oldest in the neighborhood now—Herb will turn 90 this month. A retired pediatrician, Herb continued to stay connected to working with children for many years by tutoring Scottsdale firstgraders in reading.

Barbara and Herb love to travel— they are taking a cruise to Cuba this fall and are looking forward to people-watching, good food, and, Herb quipped, “seeing my favorite 1957 Chevy again.” At the end of the trip, though, they will be happy to be back home on the Ranch.

They thought they were downsizing with the new house, but it ended up

formed many close friendships.

He and Barbara also play bridge once a week at the Granite Reef Senior Center, and Herb still gets in nine holes of golf every week, too. They enjoy being close to family members who live nearby.

he Thanksgiving season is a wonderful time for reflection. At the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, we can’t think of a better place to do so than on the trails of Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve. As stewards of the land, we are often uplifted by stories from Preserve users about the ways in which the Preserve has touched their lives. We’ve been moved by countless tales of family bonding, improvements in physical and mental health, healing during heartache and loss, and of course, those who come in search of the desert’s beauty and peace. As the weather cools, we hope to see you out on the trails or at one of our Conservancy sponsored education, family, or hike and bike events creating memories and stories of your own.

If you are looking for something to do on Thanksgiving Day, meet at the Lost Dog Wash Trailhead for the More Pie Please annual hike. Join Steve Dodd to burn off some calories with family and friends and you won’t feel a bit guilty about having that second piece of pie! This is a moderate hike of 2.5 miles with some ups and downs.
