earn about what’s in store the next two years at DC Ranch during the Ranch Association Candidate Forum Monday, March 16, at 6 p.m. Residents running for the four available board of directors’ seats will share their experiences, views and goals during the meeting at The Homestead Community Center. Statements written by prospective board members are also posted on DCRanch.com for review. The forum is an excellent opportunity for residents to assist Neighborhood Voting Members (NVMs) in selecting the best candidates to serve. Residents and NVMs are encouraged to attend and question candidates on topics of importance. NVMs vote for board members based on the general consensus of their respective neighborhoods; communities without NVMs will receive individual ballots. The deadline for election ballots to be returned to The Ranch Office on Market Street is April 3 at 5 p.m. Election results will be announced during the Annual Ranch Association Meeting on Monday, April 6.

Rejuvenate, renew and rejoice Springtime in the desert provides the perfect window for removing the old and planting the new. Trim back plants that suffered frost damage and cut tree limbs away from roof lines. Replace and spruce up landscaping to fill in and follow specific neighborhood guidelines. The DC Ranch Board of Directors are working to simplify landscape requirements for most non-custom

homes, however final revisions have not been determined. In the meantime, the Ranch Association offers two full-time specialists that can assist with resident questions to

assure homeowners and landscapers are properly planting and pruning. The Association is working with local nurseries and contractors to extend wholesale plant pricing during special events and expos. The offer was introduced during DC Ranch Day and many residents scheduled consultations to take advantage of savings. Residents may also seek assistance from the City of Scottsdale which offers complimentary irrigation

audits and landscape workshops. Single-family residences are eligible for the audit program. Numerous workshops are scheduled throughout March. Nearly 70 percent of water use is outdoors, so checking for leaks and planting wisely can add up to substantial dollars. For more information, visit scottsdaleaz.gov or call The Ranch Office on Market Street at 480.513.1500.

Karla Hertz

Let’s play ball!

Baseball fever is here this spring

F

BY JEREMY STEVENS | SENIOR COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER

rom the Giant’s dugout at Scottsdale Stadium to the pitcher’s mound of Copper Ridge ball fields, March means baseball in Scottsdale.

Home run with families “When our family moved to DC Ranch two years ago, my husband and I signed our son, Ryan, up for Little League which is pretty big in this community,” said Nicole Williamson, an avid Little League mom and Silverleaf resident.

8

Ranch News | March 2015

“We’re from Massachusetts which makes us Red Sox fans,” said Williamson. “And wouldn’t you know— of all the teams, Ryan was drafted to play on the Yankees — their arch rivals.”

Nicole Williamson

If you’ve ever been by Copper Ridge on a weekend during Little League season (which kicks off this month) you’ve felt it—baseball fever. They are the busiest fields in the city of Scottsdale. More than a thousand players, parents, grandparents, and friends converge on the complex to compete in dozens of Little League games.

(Top left) Tanner Hertz guarding second base. (Top right) The Williamson family at a spring training game in Scottsdale. (Left) The MMLL “Yankees” players received special recognition awards.

Now 11 years old, Ryan has been batting, throwing, and pitching since he was in kindergarten. “What’s nice is that kids can practically play baseball year-round in Arizona. That’s a great advantage over other parts of the country,” added Williamson. Ryan’s age group is considered the “majors” of McDowell Mountain Little League (the region within District 6 that serves DC Ranch), which made him an eligible “draft” by the coaches.

Check out your favorite teams Another DC Ranch resident, 9-year-old Tanner Hertz, is going into his third season with the league. His mom, Karla, likes that players get to try all positions on the team but knows they always have a preferred spot. “Tanner’s favorite position to play is second base,” said Hertz. “I know he likes batting, too.”

Just a few miles down the 101, America’s pastime is also being played on a larger scale as the Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, and world-champion San Francisco Giants all call Scottsdale home for Cactus League spring training. “Last year our family went to a game at Salt River Fields which was a lot of fun,” said Williamson. “Both Ryan and my daughter love seeing the players up close.” So whether it’s Little League or the big leagues, Scottsdale has baseball fever. • Business owners: consider a SEP (Simplified Employee Pension), SIMPLE IRA, Individual 401K, or Defined Benefit Plan • Employees: (especially corporate officers), max out your company 401K, think about deferred compensation, and receiving stock options as an incentive.

Low cost basis stock • Consider this option if you have a large position (over $1 Million) with low cost basis but don’t want to pay taxes right now. Think about an Exchange Fund to diversify.

Non-profit contributions • Explore making forms of donations that help out on tax day such as: donating stock and/or stock options, hard asset contributions, or gifting monies to your kids’ school and directing it towards their specific teacher for materials and supplies.

Rebalance your portfolio For example, you bought Apple for $28/ share (split adjusted) in January 2010 and now it’s more than 20 percent of your portfolio.

• Don’t be afraid to take some gains from your top holdings. • Make sure that all of your assets are working for you. Get rid of the holdings that haven’t performed over the long term (over 10 months). • Reallocate and maintain discipline in your portfolio.

Life has changed in 5 years Make sure that you’ve looked at and updated your Trust and Will. • Update the list of your hard assets (homes, property, valuables, business interests, etc.) and liquid assets (investment accounts, IRA’s, savings, etc.). • Update your beneficiaries and what you want them to inherit. Are there any new children or grandchildren that have come into the picture? Has there been a death or divorce and a beneficiary needs to be removed? • Do you have a plan in place in case of a medical situation, an incident leaves you unable to handle your day to day affairs, or someone is designated to take care of your children? • Are there enough assets to take care of your family if you pass away?

• Make sure that you don’t have too many eggs in one basket and you’re still investing within your risk parameters.

Fighting hunger and homelessness, one ‘Hope Tote’ at a time

BY JONA DAVIS | DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Millions of Americans deal with the plight of homelessness in their cities. That’s why DC Ranch is partnering with Phoenix Rescue Mission (PRM) to give back to families and individuals in need. The Phoenix Rescue Mission is a place of hope, healing, and new beginnings for men, women and children in our community struggling with homelessness, addiction, and trauma. Their vision is a community mobilized to end hunger and homelessness. PRM reports that, “Each night more than 14,000 men, women and children will spend the night on the streets of Phoenix. When you’re on the streets and living on the edge, even simple things like a toothbrush, a new pair of socks, deodorant and soap can keep hope alive.”

DC Ranch partners with

Sometimes it’s an invitation to the Mission that will help those in need to turn their life around. But it all begins with the Hope Coach and life-saving Hope Totes. The Mission’s Hope Coach hits the streets six days a week providing life-saving supplies to the unsheltered homeless. They give out Hope Totes containing toiletries and sack meals in gallon-sized Ziploc bags.

Will you fill a bag with hope? By filling a “little” bag of donated travel sized items you can make a big difference in the lives of those in need. Learn more information at phoenixrescuemission.org

As part of Volunteer Appreciation celebration, DC Ranch is proud to partner with Phoenix Rescue Mission to build Hope Totes.

Let’s celebrate Volunteer Appreciation Month

Around Scottsdale

It pays to conserve water

Y

BY NICOLE SHERBERT | SCOTTSDALE WATER

Every April, the Community Council commemorates residents who are actively making a difference.

ou already know it’s good for the environment to use water wisely, right? Water is a precious commodity here in the desert and we should all do our part to conserve it. But did you know that the rate you pay for water is directly impacted by the amount of water you use? Scottsdale Water has a tiered rate structure under which the price you pay for water increases as the volume consumed increases. This provides a pricing incentive for customers to use water more efficiently. Higher-volume usage, usually associated with using treated drinking water for extensive outdoor watering, is charged at a higher rate.

How it works For residential customers, zero to 5,000 gallons of water consumption per month is billed at the lowest tier ($1.65 per 1,000 gallons). Gallons 5,001 to 12,000 are charged at the second tier ($2.85); gallons 12,001 to 40,000 at tier 3 ($3.45); gallons 40,001 to 70,000 at tier 4 ($4.50); and all usage above 70,000 gallons is charged at the highest pricing tier of $5.00 per 1,000 gallons.

Do you know a neighbor who is consistently giving back to DC Ranch or the greater community? The Community Council would like to recognize them for their service. Celebrate this individual by nominating them on DCranch.com for a 2015 Volunteer Award. Recipients will be honored at the Volunteer Appreciation event on Saturday, April 18. Award categories listed below.

For example, if your household used 38,500 gallons of water in a month, your water usage – not including base fee and taxes – would be billed as follows: 5,000 gallons @ $1.65 per 1,000 = $8.25 7,000 gallons @ $2.85 per 1,000 = $19.95

Nominate a Neighbor

26,500 gallons @ $3.45 per 1,000 = $91.42

Leadership Award For those who are on a board of directors, a sub-committee participant, or a Neighborhood Voting Member (NVM)

38,500 Total Gallons

$119.62 Total Water Usage Charge*

For more information on rates and ways Scottsdale Water can help you reduce your water usage, visit ScottsdaleAZ.gov/Water. * Current rates are as of July 1, 2013. Subject to change per City Council action.

Now in its ninth year of serving fashion-forward women in north Scottsdale, Heidi Boutique recently moved its only location to DC Ranch Crossing. Featuring designer lines such as Haute Hippie, Trina Turk, Joie, Hudson & Genetic Denim, Karina Grimaldi, and Splendid, the shop is intricately designed to reflect a dream closet. Carrying the latest designs in women’s clothing, lingerie and accessories, guests are greeted with personalized service and a knowledgeable staff of fashion experts. Ranch News recently sat down with Heidi Hilf O-Brien, founder and inspiration behind the boutique’s name, to learn more.

Q&A with owner Heidi Hilf O-Brien

Welcome to the neighborhood, Heidi! Could you share how you got your start in the fashion business? My family has been in the fashion business for three generations on the manufacturing side. When I left our home base in Seattle for Arizona ten years ago, fashion was already my focus and passion. I took my background and moved into the opposite side of the business as a retailer. Who do you see as your customer? My primary customer lives here in north Scottsdale, with a family of her own. Another large segment of my client base are tourists and part-time residents who vacation and live in Arizona during the winter.

What prompted your move to DC Ranch Crossing? As my third stop, DC Ranch Crossing is definitely my favorite and final location. I’m really excited to be a part of the dynamics of this center, because the existing service businesses create a great deal of synergy. I also love the convenience of this location, as it’s close to my established customers. Which fashion lines do you carry that you’re most excited about right now? Three hard-to-find clothing lines that I’m proud to be carrying exclusively in Arizona are: Pam + Gela, Lauren Moshi, and Big, Bold and Fierce.

Stroll it out and see the beauty of DC Ranch

BY BRANDON CURTIS |RECREATION MANAGER

Whether walking on paved paths through neighborhoods or adventuring onto soft trails for a traditional hike, there are many sights to see. The Pioneer Path, home to the Wildflower Walk, is a favorite among many residents. As you weave in and out of different areas, your eyes are drawn to the unique flowers that thrive in the desert. There are beautiful pocket parks within Desert Camp village to enjoy.

Community Council

Color your world at the spring Wildflower Walk

T

he path and trail system within DC Ranch is considered one of the best in the Valley for several reasons. Located near the nation’s largest urban land preserve, the 33 miles of paths and trails provide residents with an opportunity to experience a rich desert environment right within their neighborhood.

J

oin Ranch Association Landscape Manager Tom Wright for the annual Wildflower Walk Saturday, March 21, at Desert Camp Community Center. The hour-long tour will give residents a chance to see all that spring has to offer. Enjoy vibrant palettes of wildflowers and native blossoming cacti and plants. Hats, sunscreen and extra water are recommended. The walk begins at 9:00 a.m. Light snacks will be provided. RSVP at DCRanch.com.

You may see a neighbor playing with their pet or just enjoying the outdoors. Another added bonus — you could easily enjoy a meal on Market Street and a nice leisurely walk back home. The paths and trails were designed to emphasize the active lifestyle DC Ranch residents value. Fun historic fact: Some tunnels along the trails were designed to be high enough to allow a rancher to ride his horse without having to take off his 10-gallon cowboy hat. No matter which neighborhood you live in, there is a path or trail near your home worth exploring. It is a great opportunity to get some exercise, connect with a new neighbor, or simply witness the sunrise over the McDowell Mountains.
