Supporting a partnership Ranch News is a not-for-profit newspaper published monthly by the DC Ranch Community Council to share timely and relevant information with residents. The publication seeks to build community by connecting neighbors through stories and pictures and to offer a product valuable to advertisers. Ranch News celebrates and perpetuates the values of the DC Ranch community.

DC Ranch fosters strategic partnerships with a handful of community organizations whose efforts align with the mission and values of its residents. Ryan House has been one of those organizations.

In 2005, DC Ranch was a young community and Ryan House was a young nonprofit organization. What was then the DC Ranch Foundation wanted to get involved with a local charity that helped families with children and support it from the ground up.

This month we are excited to host the 12th annual Run for Ryan House at DC Ranch. In our cover story you will read about some of the families served by the organization. Designed to provide short-term overnight respite stays as well as end-of-life care, Ryan House is a place of comfort and compassion for Valley children with life-threatening conditions.

Ranch Updates

Ranch board: year in review The Ranch Association Board of Directors election is just around the corner. Over the past year, the seven-member governing body addressed a number of important topics, in addition to administrative and budgetary matters. Decisions affecting safety, security, motorized recreational vehicles, investments and water usage were among the actions approved or policies created.

Security Surveillance cameras at Market Street tunnel were activated to monitor pedestrian traffic from the commercial center into private residential areas of Country Club village. The board assisted residents in Arcadia at Silverleaf with ideas on better securing the neighborhood’s unmanned south gate that faces Legacy Boulevard. In addition, the Ranch Association purchased 36 path and trail signs that were placed throughout the community to help guide hikers and cyclists to stay on the public trail system.

Motorized recreational vehicles The board spent months deliberating the use of motorized recreational vehicles on private residential streets. In an effort to keep residents safe, the decision was made to prohibit gas-powered models but allow electric scooters, skate boards and children’s play vehicles.

Standards for Conduct The Safety and Security subcommittee provided continuous updates on the groundwork to compile and streamline a comprehensive document based on the CC&Rs, existing policies and statutes. The board reviewed and provided feedback on the committee’s recommendations, with an official vote expected on March 7, at the Ranch Association Board Meeting.

Community Updates Courtesy reviews can be problem solvers Statistics show only about one in ten residents take advantage of pre-inspections offered by the Ranch Association when getting ready to sell their homes. Of the 267 sales in 2015, only 24 courtesy reviews were conducted.

Reviews can help avoid surprises during the transfer and disclosure process. They make selling a home much easier for both buyers and sellers.

Volunteer Appreciation Month: Nominate a Neighbor

The most common issues involve landscaping, such as prohibited plants or plant density. Also common are exterior paint or stucco problems and outdoor lighting issues.

Every April, the Community Council celebrates residents who are actively making a difference.

Timing is an important factor during real estate transactions. Transfer and disclosure inspections must be completed in three days, whereas a courtesy review can be done at your leisure. Call The Ranch Offices on Market Street at 480.513.1500 for more information.

Garden-in-a-grid for new gardeners

ust as a blank piece of paper can be intimidating to a writer, so is a blank garden bed to the new gardener. What goes where?

What if you get it wrong?

The best way to attack that blank garden is with a plan. Later, when you are an old pro at vegetable gardening, you will plant vegetables hither and thither with wild abandon, and everyone will admire your style and free spirit. For now, though, it’s best to be solid and geometric and orderly.

he 12th annual Run for Ryan House at DC Ranch kicks off on Market Street this month. Since its inception, the event has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Ryan House—filling a need that wasn’t offered even ten years ago.

When the Cotter family first learned their youngest son, Ryan, was not just a ‘late bloomer’ in the area of motor development, but that he instead was born with a life-limiting diagnosis for which there is no treatment or cure, they experienced a range of emotions.

Quality time and care

“We felt devastated, shocked, anxious about what the days or months ahead may bring, and uncertain about the many decisions to make,” said Holly Cotter, Ryan’s mom. “We felt as though we’d hit a wall both physically and emotionally.”

Ryan House provides parents with renewed hope and some happiness even as they face an unimaginable reality – the fact that they will most likely outlive their own children.

The Cotters took Ryan to Helen House, a home-like children’s care facility in Oxford, England. But there were few facilities like it in the States. With the help of family, friends, and exceptional community leaders and organizations, grass-roots efforts led to the founding of Ryan House.

Heather and Andre face that reality every day. Both of their daughters, Soliz and Camila, have a rare chromosomal syndrome called Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome.

The extensive care needed for their children has meant long, exhausting days and nights for Heather and Andre.

Today, dozens of families are served by the facility every year. Each comes with a unique need—but all share a sense of comfort and gratitude.

Born 21 months apart, their children are both considered to be “deafblind” – both visually and hearing impaired. Soliz and Camila require hearing aids and glasses, and are prone to frequent seizures.

The Ryan House Impact While Ryan House has cared for 530 children with life-limiting or end-of-life illnesses since 2010, the qualifying pediatric population is still underserved.

Among those who were cared for, 290 children received more than 9,000 days respite and 245 children received end-of-life care.

The Ryan House care model cuts down on emergency room and hospital visits while improving quality of life for the entire family. Ryan House services are available at no cost for families with a child aged 16 or younger who has been diagnosed with a life-threatening condition.

Families are never charged a fee for the emotional and medical support received at Ryan House. Yet annual operating expenses at Ryan House total more than $2 million. Generosity, mostly from Valley residents, is what keeps the doors at Ryan House open to children and families facing the most difficult of times.

“Ryan House gives the patients and families the gift of time and a warm loving embrace,” said Ryan House Executive Director Alyssa Crockett. “Our care team wraps its arms around the family.”

And for Heather and Andre, a few days at Ryan House does wonders to recharge their batteries and ease the burden of round-the-clock care for their little girls.

Respite and peace Aubrey has Joubert syndrome, a rare brain malformation characterized by the underdevelopment of the cerebellum. It affects her muscle tone and ability to swallow, so all her food is pureed. At three months old, she developed hypertension and was prescribed high blood pressure medicine. She doesn’t talk or walk and can’t see well, so she’s learning sign language to communicate.

Despite all of this, Aubrey attends public school and has even played on an adapted baseball league and has done adaptive ballet. She relishes her time at Ryan House.

“Aubrey knows she is here to play and the fun has arrived,” said Aubrey’s mother, Lindsay. “She discovers something new every visit. She plays dress up. She loves to play with the dollhouse. It’s become a second home for her. She is so comfortable. It’s like Disneyland for her.” She added that Aubrey doesn’t let her do her hair at home, but lets the nurses at Ryan House do it.

Aubrey likes interacting with the other kids at Ryan House, and her creativity increases when she’s there hanging out with her friends. She also loves the piano in the music room, dancing in the sensory room and rolling on the floor.

60 years of Scottsdale spring training

t began, like so many other great ideas, around a conversation in a bar.

At least, that’s the legend.

A group of Scottsdale business owners were wrapping up lunch at the Pink Pony one day in the early 1950s when one patron spotted Baltimore Orioles owner Jerold Hoffberger heading toward the door.

“Say, why don’t you bring your team out here for the spring?” asked the Scottsdale businessman.

“Build a stadium and maybe I will,” replied Hoffberger.

And there the seed was planted. Scottsdale was a hamlet of some 3,000 residents back then, but folks had a vision.

Encouraged by Hoffberger’s comment, Scottsdale’s business community passed around a figurative hat and came up with $72,000 to build a stadium.

Ground was broken in June 1955 at a former farm field that would become the northeast corner of Osborn Road and Drinkwater Boulevard. The finished product was primitive by today’s standards – concrete risers crammed with folding metal chairs, bleachers and a board-and-batten architecture reminiscent of an Old West trading post.

Still, it was arguably the grandest structure in town.

An opening exhibition game that November drew 10,000 fans – more than triple the town’s population. It’s safe to say nothing in that part of Scottsdale would ever be quite the same.

True to his barroom retort, Hoffberger brought the Orioles to Scottsdale in 1956 to train. So started an industry, a culture and a parade of characters that shape the community to this day.

The Orioles nested three springs in Scottsdale before migrating to Florida. In moved the Boston Red Sox for a five-year stay. In 1960, the team

brought to Scottsdale arguably the greatest hitters the game had ever seen.

Ty Cobb, the rough-edged and irascible “Georgia Peach” was a Red Sox advisor. Outfielder Ted Williams was entering the twilight of a Hall of Fame career. Both would begin their days with breakfast at the Pink Pony restaurant, a few minutes’ walk from Scottsdale Stadium.

The Red Sox left for Florida in 1965 and, after one season without an MLB team, the Chicago Cubs took up residence from 1967 to 1978. These were the “lovable losers” of Ernie Banks, Fergie Jenkins,

Ron Santo and Billy Williams, a talented roster that never quite got to the postseason but produced a cult following of fans across the nation.

The Cubbies relocated to Mesa after the spring of 1978, but were replaced by Ricky Henderson and the fasttrack Oakland A’s. The seemingly never-ending carousel of teams ended for Scottsdale in 1982, when the San Francisco Giants moved in and put down roots.

Scottsdale Stadium was starting to show its age as the ‘80s came to a close. Spring Training Central needed a facelift and the citizens of Scottsdale stepped up, approving a bond measure in 1989 to completely rebuild the facility.

Questions at the time included where to build the new stadium and what would it look like?

Several alternative sites for a new stadium were explored, including McCormick Ranch and the WestWorld area. In the end, the original Downtown location prevailed, as did a design that harkened back to the original Old West feel. Rebuilt Scottsdale Stadium opened in 1992 on the original’s footprint and even kept some of the original trees. You can still see them lining Drinkwater Boulevard.

By the 2000s, spring training in Scottsdale expanded with the addition of Salt River Fields at Talking Stick.

The Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies negotiated a 20-year commitment with the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community to play in a brandnew state-of-the-art facility. Construction began on Salt River Fields at Talking Stick in 2009. The stadium was completed for the 2011 spring training season.

The Cactus League has grown to 15 teams and draws more than a million fans. Annual spring training revenue is comparable to a Super Bowl.

Fans will tell you what matters in the spring are players, sunshine and memories. As Scottsdale celebrates its 60th season of spring training baseball, there are plenty of each.

Sonoran Preserve? How abundant will the wildflowers be this year? Which trail offers the best viewing? All are good questions that share a common answer: “It depends.�

There is no reliable “start date� when wildflowers in the Preserve bloom. For each variety, the start date varies depending on environmental

and climate conditions. Mother Nature goes to work when she is ready. Sometimes colors begin to emerge in late February, but most often, flowers start to pop up in March.

A great bloom generally occurs if the Preserve gets soaking rains the previous fall to start the germination process, followed by gentle rains in late December and January. Temperatures and other factors also play a role. But even if conditions have been less than ideal, there’s always something blooming that you can discover out in the Preserve.

The best trail views vary from year to year, sometimes from month to month, and even from week to week. The Preserve is filled with micro-climates, and conditions in each individual micro-climate vary from year to year.

Remember to leave plants along the trails—take only pictures!
