Nestled amidst the Rocky Mountains sits Aspen, Colorado, renowned for its stunning landscapes, world-class skiing and summer celebrations. Beyond the plethora of outdoor activities, a thriving arts scene adds another layer to Aspen’s cultural allure. From galleries showcasing local and international talent to Aspen Art Museum and captivating events, the town is a haven for art enthusiasts.

Aspen’s art scene is diverse; numerous galleries line the streets, providing a platform for world-class artworks. Many galleries exude unique Aspen charm, offering visitors a chance to explore a wide range of artistic expressions. Increasingly, Aspen purveys more contemporary art; however, landscapes, western and southwestern works can still be admired in traditional galleries. The most mentioned art galleries include: Aspen Fine Art, Galerie Maximillian, Zuger, Raven, Pam Driscoll, Vickers Collection, Baldwin, Huntsman, Toklat and Royal St. Fine Art. Aspen Art Gallery features established artists but also serves

Art in Aspen 2023-2024 season passes feature the art of Swiss artist, Claudia Comte

as a launching pad for emerging talents, contributing to the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of Aspen’s artistic community.

This year’s ski lift pass features the work of close friend Claudia Comte, a French speaking Swiss artist whose contrasting graphic lines, cartoon-like sculptures and palindrome words create attractive works that highlight deeper issues such as climate change and factory farming. Her works are displayed on the chair lift bars too, as part of the Art in Unexpected Places program.

For those seeking cultural heritage, the Aspen Historical Society offers a captivating journey through the region’s past, weaving together the stories of its pioneers and the evolution of its vibrant arts scene. In contrast, architect Shigeru Ban’s rust-colored basket-woven aesthetic at Aspen Art Museum is a beacon of contemporary art boasting cutting-edge exhibitions. The museum challenges traditional perceptions and encourages dialogue about the

intersection of art and society. Its commitment to fostering creativity and engagement makes it a cultural nucleus in the heart of Aspen.

Aspen comes alive throughout the year with a variety of art-focused events that draw locals and visitors alike. The annual Aspen Arts Festival transforms the streets into an open-air gallery with artists showcasing creations against the stunning backdrop of the mountains. This event not only celebrates the visual arts but also embraces performing arts, making it a comprehensive celebration of creativity.

The Aspen Film Festival is another highlight, attracting cinephiles from around the world. This event screens a diverse array of films, offering a cinematic journey that complements the visual arts scene in the city. Follow Thatcher on Instagram @TheArtfulTourist.

DC Ranch Fitness Program through the years

By Samantha Canchola | Community Council

Originating from a deep-seated dedication to quality of life, as well as

a collective commitment to nurturing a healthier community, fitness classes at DC Ranch have undergone a significant evolution since their inception in the early 2000s. What began in a small room with a handful of enthusiastic residents at Desert Camp Community Center has evolved into a thriving fitness program at The Homestead Community “Each time someone Center. When speaking to class members on what motivated them to get involved in DC Ranch fitness classes, resident Andrea Brin commented, “I am happiest when I am in a group fitness environment. It just always feels welcoming and has great energy. I was recovering from an injury when I first came to DC Ranch. Once healing made it possible to seek out a class, I observed Strength & Balance and knew that I could make the proper modifications to meet my limitations. Heather, the instructor, was incredibly welcoming and helped me create my own program within her class.”

This relocation marked a significant I teach.” milestone, as it now had enough space to accommodate a wider range of classes and equipment. The Homestead became a central gathering point for residents seeking not only physical fitness but social connections and a sense of belonging.

“One very special part of teaching at DC Ranch is watching the group of individual students transform into a supportive community of friends,” says long time DC Ranch yoga instructor, Abbie Chapman. “Each time someone new joins, they are initially quiet, wondering where to put their mat and what to do while waiting for class to start. After a week or two, they are chatting with other students, connecting and sharing. There is nothing better than the sense of community that I see in these classes, more than anywhere else that I teach.”

Playing a vital role in the well-being of the community, the carefully curated group fitness and Health & Wellness classes have not only become a catalyst for friendships and support networks but have also contributed to the physical health of participants. Chapman continues, “So many of these students are there every week, getting stronger, working on balance, breath and form. I like to challenge the students to do more but offering the option to find their own path and grow at their own pace. We like to laugh, and I keep the mood light and playful, creating a safe environment for students to make mistakes and learn.”

When asked what legacy Chapman wishes to leave with DC Ranch, she said: “Helping students feel better in their bodies and helping them develop tools that can help find peace. Our lives are busy and stressful, my classes teach students how to slow down, breathe, connect and enjoy the present moment. I love making an impact and I especially love working with such a wonderful, supportive community.”

The journey of the fitness studio has been closely intertwined with the growth and development of DC Ranch. Currently, the community embarks on a master plan project aimed at enhancing various aspects of community life, including recreation facilities at Desert Camp Community Center. As a part of this visionary plan, fitness classes are slated to move to a dedicated fitness studio when Desert Camp re-opens. This upcoming move represents the culmination of years of hard work, dedication and community support. The new fitness studio, purpose-built and designed to meet the evolving needs of residents, symbolizes a commitment to the ongoing health and wellness of the community. As fitness programs prepare to step into their new home, they carry with them the legacy of fostering a healthier, more connected community. The DC Ranch Community Council team is seeking input from residents on what group fitness and Health & Wellness classes are of interest, including days of the week and times. Please email recreation@dcranchinc.com with suggestions. Visit DCRanch.com for a listing of class schedules, registration and for Desert Camp project updates.

moved to Scottsdale and introduced the concept at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts.

Siegel said the center’s Virginia G. Piper Theater is an ideal place for Keyboard Conversations because of its “wonderful” acoustics, intimate seating, experienced stage crew and ideal lighting and sound. Upcoming presentations include: A French Musical Feast Feb. 6: Including music written by several com-

posers, this program is meant to “enchant and delight the ears,” with beloved tunes like Debussy’s “Clair de lune.”

In 2025, Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will celebrate its 50th anniversary. And for

almost as many years, one artist has been a perennial performer at the center: Jeffrey Siegel.

Keyboard Conversations celebrates 45 years

This marks Siegel’s 45th season presenting his signature Keyboard Conversations at the center. The talented pianist offers deeply researched, effortlessly engaging and occasionally humorous commentary.

“One of the highlights for me in doing the series at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts is the Q and A that concludes the program, in which the audience is encouraged to ask whatever questions they might wish to ask,” Siegel said. “One night a boy of 10 or 11 spoke up and asked, ‘How many hours a day did Beethoven have to practice?’ and this brought down the house!”

Siegel, whose commentaries have been favorably compared to the revolutionary on-stage talks of his one-time acquaintance Leonard Bernstein, started Keyboard Conversations 55 years ago at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. They were presented there by the late Dayton Grafman, who eventually

Conversation of the season has “fabulous” short pieces by Tchaikovsky, Brahms and Grieg—three popular composers who were only ever in the same room one time: New Year’s Day 1888.

“We’ve been putting Jeffrey’s performances on stage for nearly half a century because his analysis of the music and stories behind the composers are uniquely intriguing,” said Abbey Messmer, programming director at the center. “And he’s gained long-term followers through this captivating recipe of playing, storytelling and connecting to the community.”

Siegel noted that in a predominantly digital age, the music of great composers offers a nourishing, deeply affecting experience that is necessary now more than ever. He said he is often touched to see an audience of all ages at his shows, including novices who might be attending their first classical music concerts. All Keyboard Conversations with Jeffrey Siegel concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Virginia G. Piper Theater at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, 7380 E. 2nd St., Scottsdale, Arizona. Tickets start at $26. For information, visit ScottsdalePerformingArts.org/events.
