lection time for the Ranch Association Board of Directors is just a month away. This year, Neighborhood Voting Members will be asked to fill the seats of three incumbents and one seat left vacant by resignation. Up for re-election are board secretary Susan Grace, treasurer Joe McGarr and member Don Matheson.

The fourth seat, which opened after member Norm Schuminsky resigned late last year, has been temporarily filled by board-appointment. Past Community Council board president, Tom Headley, accepted the interim appointment.

The rest of Schuminsky’s term must be brought to a vote.

Later this month, interested candidates are invited to join in the Ranch Association’s Election Kickoff Rally during DC Ranch Day Feb. 20 at The Homestead Community Center from 4 to 6 p.m. Staff will be available to answer questions and provide information and applications. Board candidates must be DC Ranch homeowners and be in good standing with community standards, assessments and fees.

Applicants may download the application form online at DCRanch.com, or pick it up at The Ranch Offices on Market Street during regular business hours.

Community Updates Construction continues on the new family restroom at Desert Camp A new family-friendly amenity is under construction at Desert Camp: a family restroom that will be accessible from the pool area is being created by converting part of the women’s locker room. In addition, the existing locker rooms will be updated with new flooring, countertops, fixtures and paint.

Desert Camp will remain open throughout the remodel; all regularly scheduled clubs and programs will continue during the project. Temporary restructuring of the restrooms will allow for continued use during construction.

Important resident meeting Feb. 17 DC Ranch prides itself on its residents. They are at the core of what makes it such a wonderful place to call home. The stable property values are a result of the care each resident takes in being a good neighbor. Simple actions like remembering to put trash cans away and storing personal items out of sight all collectively help maintain the attractiveness of the community. Many of the guidelines for conduct and expectations are found in the CC&Rs. A resident committee has spent extensive time to compile components of the CC&Rs and policies into an easy-to-read homeowner’s guide for conduct standards.

The project is expected to be complete by March 21. For updates and more information, please call the front desk at 480.342.7178. Thank you for your patience during the remodel.

A town hall meeting is set for Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. at The Homestead Community Center to share this information and proposed compliance. A vote to approve the standards is expected at the March board of directors meeting.

Community Council board changes The Community Council thanks Tom Headley and Debbie McKeighan who have Tom Headley Debbie McKeighan completed their terms on the Community Council Board of Directors. Headley served on the board for six years, two of which he was President. McKeighan served for six years. Their positions have been filled by Ron Belmont and Bud Kern. The board has also elected its 2016 officers: Pat Simpson, president; Marc Blonstein, vice president; and Mark Eberle, treasurer.

t’s time to start training for the 12th annual Run for Ryan House, which will take runners through DC Ranch on March 13. Whether you are planning to do the 1-mile Family Fun Run, 5K, 10K or Half Marathon, the best way to be successful and have fun is to train smart. Here are some tips from Fleet Feet Scottsdale, the Run’s official running accessory store: • Warm up and cool down every time. Warm up and cool down with light jogging. Stretch when muscles are warm and loose after your run.

• Follow road rule number one. Running against traffic allows the runner to be in command. Be alert and agile–stay alive.

• Not all surfaces are created equal. Run on soft surfaces, like dirt trails, whenever possible, and avoid the angled edge of the road.

• Cotton is rotten. Invest a little in some technical fabric running shorts, tops, and socks that allow moisture to rise to the surface and evaporate, and minimize chafing.

My patients were Presidents Connie Mariano is used to breaking barriers, used to shattering the glass ceiling.

As the first military woman in the history of the United States to be appointed as Physician to the President, Dr. Mariano has set her own standard. She was the first female director of the medical unit of the White House, and the first Filipino-American to become a rear admiral in the US Navy.

White House doctor to speak about caring for the First Families through medicine and the military, and give a rare perspective about what goes on behind closed doors at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

“Presidents can be difficult patients,” said Dr. Connie.

“They feel super-human and don’t think the rules of nature apply. So if they wouldn’t take my advice, I simply said I would call in the First Lady. That always made them comply.”

Dr. Mariano wrote the book “The White House Doctor: My Patients Were Presidents–A Memoir.” With a foreword by Bill Clinton, the autobiographical book takes a look at the personal lives of three American Presidents–George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush–and three American First Ladies–Barbara Bush, Hillary Clinton, and Laura Bush– she took care of while working as a White House physician.

In the forward to “The White House Doctor,” Bill Clinton wrote, “Dr. Connie was with me during the happy times and the sad times, as well as in the historic and private moments. I trusted her with my life and with the lives of my family.”

A true trailblazer, Dr. Mariano’s career offers inspiration for both physicians and service women and men.

Debbie and Don Wood met in the Phoenix airport on Labor Day 2002. They struck up a conversation while waiting for planes back home to Wisconsin and Arkansas, respectively, and boarded their flights without exchanging contact information, not even their names. But the next day, Don was on a mission.

He knew she was a healthcare exec so he started “smiling and dialing” and located her on the second try. They talked a lot more on the phone, visited each other, and were married in March 2003. Debbie has had a house in DC Ranch since 2001, but they’ve been in Scottsdale full time for about a year and having a great time.

Shelley Diakiw shared that she and her husband, Bob, met 36 years ago on a beach in Canada. “Yes, a beach in Canada! We both looked fabulous in bathing suits back then!” They were both living in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and went camping at Grand Beach with separate groups of friends. t wasn’t always about roses and romantic cards. According to History.com, “Officially recognized by the Roman Catholic Church, St. Valentine is known to be a real person who died around A.D. 270. However, his true identity [has been] questioned” and there is some confusion about the details, with at least two martyred Valentines in 200-500 A.D. Because “Valentinus,” which means worthy, strong or powerful, was a popular name, there are about a dozen St. Valentines— the most celebrated one is St. Valentine of Rome, a priest who was executed for secretly marrying couples in ancient Rome. There are also ties to pagan Roman celebrations.

Dick Armstrong tells this story about meeting his wife, Charlotte: “I met my ‘sweet petunia’ at the office—I was transferred from the Hollywood office [of a bank] to San Bernardino, Calif. I occasionally had to attend work-related social functions back in Hollywood. My secretary or some of her friends would accompany me-one of them was Charlotte. She was engaged to a very nice guy who was in town on the weekends. After a few months, she broke her engagement and returned the ring. We met in Feb. 1968 and married in Nov. 1968, 47 years ago.”

A grocery store clerk gets the credit for bringing Pam and David Helmick together 20 years ago. She kept telling each of them that she knew the “perfect person” for them. When they finally agreed to a blind date, David arrived at Pam’s door looking very dapper, except that he had his golf shirt on inside-out—and backwards! They went to a friend’s house for dinner and Pam remembers sliding down a custom slide the friend had installed—it swooped down from the roof of the house. She decided that David was a different kind of guy, and she liked that!

Young DC Ranch residents perform in Snow White and Rose Red ballet

alented dancers from DC Ranch and the Valley will be performing this month in “The Fairy Tale of Snow White and Rose Red,” an original, full-length story ballet presented by Plumb Performing Arts Center (PPAC). The ballet is being choreographed and staged by Kelly Roberts and Kendra Dahl, both of whom are former professional ballet dancers and current ballet instructors at PPAC. The ballet’s story is based on the classic Grimm’s Brothers fairy tale, but not the one most people know. Snow White and her older sister, Rose Red, are devoted to each other. When the Evil Queen descends into jealousy and madness, she makes a plan to exterminate the sisters and the King. The girls run through the forest, meeting other fairy tale charac-

The dancers make this enchanting ballet look light and easy, but its beauty comes as a result of thousands of hours of hard work. Youth Ballet Company dancers practice for this production nine hours a week from mid-August to early February, in addition to their regular dance classes.

Have you ever wondered why there are different colors and textures in the rocks of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve? Here is a quick guide to the rocks and formations most frequently seen during hikes.

The Southern Portion of the McDowells The rocks in the southern end of the McDowell Mountains were formed almost two billion years ago. Islands in an ancient ocean were welded to the edge of an ancient continent by movement of the Earth’s crust. The enormous heat and pressure of this process changed, or metamorphosed, the pre-existing sedimentary and volcanic rock into the many varieties of “metamorphic” rocks seen today.
