It took 108 agonizing years for the Chicago Cubs to win their third World Series in franchise history. It’ll take them only eight months if they can prove they’re capable of capturing their fourth.

“We’re looking forward to 2017,” Cubs owner Tom Ricketts told fans last month at the Cubs Convention at the Sheraton Grand hotel. “I think that anyone who knows Cubs history knows that when the Cubs win a World Series, they always win again the next year.”

The Cubs won back-to-back championships in 1907-08 and the process of beginning their quest to repeat as World Series champs tops the list of several storylines to watch as spring training gets started in Arizona with the 15 teams participating in Cactus League play.

Of course, it won’t be a cakewalk for the Cubs, even though they are the favorites to win another title. Remember how the words “organizational advocacy” never worked for the Diamondbacks under the Josh Burns’ regime?

Well, according to Theo Epstein, president of baseball operations for the Cubs, neither will “organizational arrogance” benefit the Cubbies.

“There are things that get in the way,” Epstein explained to reporters about how difficult it is to repeat as champions. “When you win, you get pulled in a lot of different directions.

There can be a tendency, no matter the character, to start thinking about yourself a little bit. We have to really work hard – we all do – to avoid any type of organizational arrogance, any sense of entitlement. “… I don’t worry about our group, but some teams after winning it, other things get in the way of that bond.”

Baseball fans won’t just be filling the stands at Sloan Park in Mesa to catch a glimpse of National League MVP Kris Bryant, fellow slugger Anthony Rizzo and a stellar starting rotation featuring Jon Lester, Jake Arrieta, Kyle Hendricks and John Lackey.

tus League for all kinds of baseball fans to follow.

Let’s start in Tempe, where Angels center fielder Mike Trout not only has a chance to win his third American League MVP before the age of 26, but the potential to become just the fifth member of baseball’s exclusive 40-40

club. Only Jose Canseco (1988), Barry Bonds (1996), Alex Rodriguez (1998) and Alfonso Soriano (2006) have hit at least 40 home runs and stolen 40 or more bases in the same season.

It’s been five years since anyone pulled off the 30-30 and Trout was one of the two players – Ryan Braun was the

other – who did it in 2012. Since then, Trout has averaged 33 homers, 96 RBIs, 116 runs, 28 steals and a .310 batting average.

Over in the West Valley, there is plenty of intrigue as well.

In Goodyear, everyone wants to know if the Indians can duplicate their 2016 performance and get back to the World Series, where they had three chances to finish off the Cubs this past fall. Cleveland is loaded once again, featuring a devastating rotation of Corey Kluber, Carlos Carrasco, Danny Salazar, Josh Tomlin and Trevor Bauer and a dominating bullpen led by closer Cody Allen and set-up man Andrew Miller.

At Camelback Ranch-Glendale, all eyes will be on the Dodgers and lefthander Clayton Kershaw, who has a shot to win his fourth NL Cy Young Award in seven seasons. Los Angeles, which lost the NL Championship Series to the Cubs in six games, is viewed as a top World Series candidate and could ruin the Cubs’ chances at repeating this year.

In Surprise, the Royals and Rangers will be compelling teams to watch this spring.

Texas features one of the game’s greats, third baseman Adrian Beltre, who is 58 hits shy of reaching 3,000 for his career.

The Royals, World Series champs in 2015, will look to contend again in a year in which the core of their group – including infielders Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, Alcides Escobar and center fielder Lorenzo Cain – are all set to hit free agency after this season.

There’s always something interesting brewing in Scottsdale during March, and one of the primary focal points at Salt River Fields will be keeping tabs on sluggers Nolan Arenado of the Rockies and Paul Goldschmidt of the Diamondbacks. The former led the NL in home runs and RBIs for a second straight season in 2016 and the latter has emerged as a regular contender for MVP consideration.

And, as always, there are the San Francisco Giants, winners of three World Series titles in the past seven years.

The bullpen let them down after an NL-best 57-33 start, but after tweaking that unit, the core of the group returns in 2017, including a star rotation led by Madison Bumgarner, Johnny Cueto, Matt Moore and Jeff Samardzija.

Following disappointing CACTUSanother LEAGUE 2017 season, the Diamondbacks cleaned house once again, bringing in a new group of executives to lead their baseball operations department. But for as 2017 littleCACTUS as the newLEAGUE front office, led by General Manager Mike Hazen, might seem to have in common with the previous regime, headed by Tony La Russa andCACTUS Dave Stewart, they do appear LEAGUE 2017 to align on at least one thing.

Both believe the Diamondbacks’ core of players is better than last season’s 69-93 record would suggest. And, as such, Hazen chose to keep 2017 the group CACTUS LEAGUE largely intact for 2017, giving the unit what might be one last chance to win together.

“We felt this was a strong club going intoCACTUS last season,” Hazen said.

“The LEAGUE 2017 main cogs in that club are still here. We feel like with some of the changes we’ve made that, hopefully, if we can do things a little bit differently, like with LEAGUE 2017and our CACTUS ability to pick up the baseball otherwise, that this team could surprise some people.”

That’s not to say there won’t be new faces, starting atLEAGUE the top step of the dugCACTUS 2017 out. Hazen, who spent the past 11 years in the Boston organization, brought former Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo with him as manager, replacing Chip CACTUS LEAGUE 2017 Hale.

The changes on the roster were less drastic. Hazen swapped infielder Jean Segura for a high-upside starting pitchCACTUS LEAGUE er, Taijuan Walker.

He cut ties2017 with Welington Castillo in favor of more defensive-minded catchers. And he added veteran closer Fernando Rodney to helpCACTUS stabilize theLEAGUE bullpen. 2017 Altogether, the additions haven’t really moved the needle in terms of outside expectations. Both odds-makers andCACTUS projection systems see2017 the DiaLEAGUE mondbacks in a similar light as they did this time a year ago, as a team that could win around 77 or 78 games but won’t challenge the Dodgers 2017 or Giants CACTUS LEAGUE in the NL West.

The roster still presents some challenges. Yasmany Tomas is slated to be on an outfield corner, meaning the club CACTUS LEAGUE 2017 will have to overcome his defensive limitations. The rotation will need to

“The expectations were set rather high and then it looked like the injury bug hit them and they couldn’t really get off the ground,” Lovullo said. “That’s a part of the game. I think the front office has done a really good job this year of preparing for any moment like that, so it doesn’t repeat itself. I think good organizations can sustain some injuries -- not every injury, but some injuries -- and I think that’s what the front office has done.”

The front office might have a lot more work to do if the team doesn’t perform.

With a light farm system and a huge chunk of the payroll tied up in right-hander Zack Greinke and Tomas on a roster that will only get more expensive, the Diamondbacks might be forced to shift gears.

“We’re not really there yet in terms of sort of long-term strategic thinking,” Hazen said. “We like this team. We’ll see where this team goes. If we have to make some adjustments, we will.

“At some point, once we start figuring out exactly where we’re going to be headed long-term, we’re going to have to start focusing on some of those questions. I don’t think we’re in a situation where we have to make those decisions today.”

The Chicago White Sox thought they could contend for the American League Central title in 2016 and, after getting off to a fast start by going 17-8 in April, that belief seemed sound. But then it all collapsed. The White Sox didn’t have another winning month until September and by that time they were well out of the playoff race.

Chicago was 11th in the AL in runs scored and fielding percentage, numbers that compromised a starting staff that included Chris Sale and Jose Quintana. Knowing the status quo wasn’t working, General Manager Rick Hahn started over, firing manager Robin Ventura in October and then trading Sale and center fielder Adam Eaton in the offseason for six prospects.

Beyond that, it will be interesting to see how veteran starting pitcher James Shields performs after a disastrous 2016 season in which went 4-12 with a 6.77 ERA for the White Sox after they acquired him from San Diego in early June. Chicago is counting on him to be its No. 3 starter.

Position battle With Eaton traded to the Washington Nationals, the center field job is open and there’s no ready replacement.

Prospect Charlie Tilson probably has the inside track after hitting .282 with 15 stolen bases for the St. Louis Cardinals’ Triple-A minor league affiliate last year but he’s no sure thing. Chicago could go with a platoon or simply play anyone who might be swinging a hot bat.

Moncada, in the deal that sent Sale to the Boston Red Sox. Moncada, 21, should be the Opening Day starter at second base and a fixture in the lineup for years. In 405 minor league at-bats last year Moncada hit .294 with 15 homers, 62 RBIs, 45 stolen bases and an onbase percentage of .407. The other top prospect who could make an immediate impact is starting pitcher Lucas Giolito, acquired in the Eaton trade.

Giolito, 22, struck out 116 batters in 115 1/3 innings across three minor-league levels last year while posting a 2.97 ERA. He could slide into the rotation as the No. 5 starter but he’s considered to be among the top pitching prospects in the game and projects to be a future ace.

Manager: Rick Renteria 2016 record: 78-84 Big changes: Where to start. The White Sox fired manager Robin Ventura after the season and hired Renteria. Then, one year after making deals that signaled they were going for it in the American League Central, the White Sox reversed course. They traded Sale and Eaton for six prospects. The moves made their minor league system one of the better in the major leagues but it also means Chicago is in for a rebuild. Given the White Sox haven’t had a winning record since 2012 that’s probably not a bad thing.

Food and drink: Food options include macaroni and cheese with a variety of toppings, plus fresh steamed tamales. Enjoy a cold beer or Three Amigos margarita at Four Peaks Patio on the stadium’s main concourse.

Things to look for: The main stadium features players' retired numbers above each club's bullpen. It’s hard to call the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 2016 season a failure, given that they reached the National League Championship Series, where they lost to the Chicago Cubs.

But it’s hard to call it a success, too, because after four straight National League West titles and a payroll that’s the envy of every major league club, nothing but a World Series appearance would suffice.

So call it what it was: a good season that ended, once again, in disappointment.

Top draw Clayton Kershaw is still the best pitcher in baseball but this could be the spring that left-hander Julio Urias emerges as the star everyone expected him to be since he was named the game’s top pitching prospect as recently as January 2016.

Urias had a solid rookie season, going 5-2 with a 3.39 ERA and striking out 84 batters in 77 innings. Urias will again be on an innings limit but don’t be surprised if by midseason he’s the Dodgers’ No. 2 starter behind Kershaw.

Position battle This is one of those problems managers like to have: The Dodgers have too many options in the outfield. The lone certainty is that Joc Pederson will start in center, even after a 2016 campaign in which he hit just .246 and struck out 130 times in 406 at-bats. It’s the corner outfield spots that need to be worked out next month.

Andrew Toles may have the inside track in left field, given his impressive and somewhat surprising performance last year as a midseason call-up. He hit .314 in the regular season and followed that up by hitting .364 in the NLCS against the Cubs. If Toles does win the job in left, either Yasiel Puig or Andre Ethier would be the option in right. The Dodgers could trade the mercurial Puig but that would mean all three outfielders bat lefthanded and Los Angeles was horrific against left-handed pitching last year.

Ethier, who’s 34, is owed $35 million for the next two seasons and missed all of last year with a broken leg, so it’s unlikely Los Angeles could find a trade partner willing to take on his contract.

Bellinger, 21, led the Class-A California league last year in runs (97) and RBIs (103) and finished second in homers (30).

For a potential contributor this year, keep an eye on right-hander Brock Stewart, who posted a 1.79 ERA at three minorleague levels last season. Stewart, a sixth-round pick in 2014, projects as a starter but could factor into the bullpen.

Big changes: For a team with a seemingly unlimited payroll, the RANGERS | ROYALS Dodgers’ offseason moves had more to do with keeping the core together than bringing in any big-name free agents. To that end, Los Angeles re-signed closer Kenley Jansen, third baseman Justin Turner and starter Rich Hill to contracts totaling a combined $192 million. The goal, of course: win a fifth consecutive NL West title and go a step further than they did last season.

The Rockies finished a distant third in the National League West last season, but the standings don’t tell the story of how encouraging their year was.

They not only enjoyed encouraging debuts from two of their top position player prospects, they also began to cobble together the makings of decent rotation, which, as history at altitude shows, is all that’s necessary to turn the Rockies into a contender.

Right-handers Tyler Chatwood, Chad Bettis and Jon Gray and lefty Tyler Anderson managed to stay mostly healthy, and in doing so showed that they can often do enough to give the Rockies’ highpowered offense a chance to win.

Their bullpen, however, remains a big question mark, though they did try to address it by adding a pair of free-agents: lefty Mike Dunn (three year, $19 million) and right-hander Greg Holland (one year, $7 million).

Top draw Though versatile newcomer Ian Desmond was a big-ticket acquisition, given a five-year, $70 million deal, there’s no comparison for the team's most valued player - third baseman Nolan Arenado.

Last year, Arenado won his fourth consecutive Gold Glove – one for every season of his career – while making the All-Star team and collecting MVP votes for the second consecutive season.

Arenado, who is in the conversation for the league’s best all-around player, is fun to watch not only because he’s so good, but also because of how much fun he seems to have playing the game.

Breaking in Shortstop Trevor Story and outfielder David Dahl reached the big leagues and immediately excelled, putting up the sort of numbers that suggest they could become stalwarts in the Rockies’ loaded lineup.

This year, they’ll be hoping to get the same sort of contributions from righthander Jeff Hoffman, a starter who was the key return in the Troy Tulowitzki trade in 2015.

Position battle With Nick Hundley departing as a CACTUS LEAGUE 2017 free agent, signing with the rival Giants, the Rockies are left with a pair of youngsters to battle it out behind the plate.

In Tony Wolters, the Rockies have a light hitter who showed well defensively as a rookie last season, throwing out 31 percent of base stealers and grading out well in framing metrics.

He’ll likely be competing with Tom Murphy, who appears to be the more dangerous hitter of the two. Murphy spent most of last season in Triple-A, hitting .327 with 19 homers, then mashed five more long balls in 44 atbats as a September call-up.

The prospect to watch this spring is first baseman Matt Thaiss, the 16th overall pick in the 2016 amateur draft. Thaiss had a .367 onbase percentage in 67 minor league games while striking out just 32 times in 264 at-bats. But he played only a half-season of Class-A ball so he’ll probably go no higher than Double-A this year. Also keep an eye on 19-year-old outfielder Jahmai Jones, who is ticketed for Class-A but has the potential to be an impact player in the major leagues.

It was obviously a magical 2016 season for Cleveland despite blowing a 3-1 lead over the Chicago Cubs in the World Series. When the year began the Indians weren’t even the favorite in the American League Central. Sports Illustrated, for example, had them finishing 83-79.

But despite having outfielder Michael Brantley for just 11 games (shoulder) and losing Abraham Almonte and Marlon Byrd to suspensions for the use of performance enhancing drugs, Cleveland rolled into the postseason and then swept the Boston Red Sox and beat the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALCS 4-1 before falling to the Cubs.

The Indians didn’t bring home a championship trophy like LeBron James did for the Cavaliers, but they gave the city a summer it will never forget.

Top draw Brantley, who had offseason shoulder surgery and then was shut down in August, had little impact on the Indians’ run to the World Series, but his return would further bolster a dangerous lineup. Just two years ago Brantley hit .310 with 15 homers, 84 RBIs and 15 stolen bases.

When fully healthy he’s a middle-of-theorder bat. Cleveland will take it slowly with Brantley during March but the Cactus League should give Tribe fans an idea of whether Brantley can again be the player he was in 2015.

Position battle It sounds silly to say the closer job is up in the air. After all, Cody Allen converted 32 of 35 save opportunities last season and has 90 saves over the past three seasons. But left-hander Andrew Miller is one of the more dominant relievers in the game, striking out 123 batters last year in 74 1/3 innings. It will be difficult if not impossible for Miller to be used as he was in the postseason, when manager Terry Francona brought him in for multiple innings. The question becomes whether he serves as a set-up man for Allen, takes over in the ninth inning or the two share the job, depending on workload and matchups over the final three outs.

return World Series berth, but with the loss of free agent Rajai Davis there is an outfield spot open and it’s just waiting for Bradley Zimmer, the top prospect in the organization. Few doubt Zimmer’s ability or eventual impact but there’s some question as to whether he’s ready for the major leagues after a 2016 season in which he hit .250 with 171 strikeouts in 468 at-bats. Where Zimmer begins the 2017 season likely will depend on how he plays in spring training; if he puts up good numbers he’ll likely be in the Opening Day lineup. If he struggles, another year at Triple-A – and an eventual midseason call-up – is more probable.

The big move, of course, was signing first baseman/designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion to a three-year, $60 million deal. Other than that, Cleveland is counting on its core and the return to health of players like Brantley and starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco to go even further in 2017.

There’s no other way to put it: It was a horrific 2016 season for Cincinnati, which finished 351⁄2 games behind the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central. Only the San Diego Padres lost as many games as Cincinnati in the NL. The pitching staff gave up 258 home runs, a major league record that shattered the mark of 241 set by the Detroit Tigers in 1996.

The ugly numbers weren’t an accident. With the exception of second baseman Brandon Phillips and first baseman Joey Votto, the Reds stripped their club of proven major league players to go young and try to win two to four years down the line.

That may be the prudent thing to do but it also means sacrificing the 2017 season for the future. Another 90-loss season wouldn’t surprise anyone.

Well, there's always Votto, who is 33 but can still hit. He hardly fits into the organization's rebuilding, however, so all Reds fans can do for now is focus on the kids, like 22-year-old Jose Peraza, who likely will start at second base now that Phillips has been traded to the Atlanta Braves. Fans can also watch for the continued development of center fielder Billy Hamilton, who not only stole 58 bases last year but improved his batting average from .226 in 2015 to .260 and his on-base percentage from .274 to .321. Other than that ... 2018 better get here in a hurry.

Position battle Given they lost 94 games last year, it’s amazing that the Reds don’t have a lot of position battles looming this spring. There will be a battle for the backup catcher spot and a reserve outfielder but most of the 25-man roster is set. The key question: Will one of the Reds’ young pitching prospects wind up as the No. 5 starter?

The Mariners could point to several factors for finishing just short, including 25 blown saves by their bullpen, a 3030 record in one-run games, and a miserable June when they went 10-18 and lost pitchers Felix Hernandez, Taijuan Walker and Wade Miley to injuries.

at winning the starting job in right field.

GM Jerry Dipoto called Haniger “the best offensive player in the minor leagues at any level” in 2016, but time will tell if Haniger can live up to those expectations.

Though he crushed the ball at Double-A and Triple-A, he hit .229 with five home runs in 109 at-bats for the Diamondbacks. If that trend continues in Seattle, the Mariners may regret having dealt outfielder Seth Smith to the Orioles in exchange for pitcher Yovani Gallardo.

The Mariners' corner-outfield depth includes Ben Gamel and Guillermo Heredia. At some point, they could also turn to top prospect Tyler O’Neill, 21, who won Southern League MVP honors

and appears close to being major-league ready.

Breaking in The starting rotation is set with Hernandez, Hisashi Iwakuma and James Paxton being backed up by trade acquisitions Drew Smyly and Gallardo. But keep your eyes on young right-hander Andrew Moore, who was named the organization’s Minor League Pitcher of the Year after going 12-4 with a 2.65 ERA between Class-A Advanced Bakersfield and Double-A Jackson.

Seattle used 13 starting pitchers a year ago and it probably won’t be a surprise if Moore gets an opportunity to shine at some point in 2017.

As the San Diego Padres enter Year 2 of their rebuild, there is little in the way of realistic expectations that they can snap what’s now a six-year skid of sub.500 finishes. In fact, many believe this could be their worst season yet.

After a year in which they traded nearly all of their big-league assets in exchange for prospects and spent more than $30 million in the international market, most of the Padres’ most important long-term developments are likely to occur in the minor leagues.

But they should have at least a few interesting prospects getting extended big-league opportunities, players looking to cement their status as building blocks in what is otherwise expected to be another dismal season.

Breaking in Here’s where things should get interesting for the Padres this year. Hunter Renfroe and Manuel Margot got brief tastes of the big leagues last season, and both rookie outfielders are expected to get everyday opportunities this year.

Renfroe has monster power – he hit a combined 34 homers between the majors and minors last season – while Margot is a well-rounded player, with speed, defense in center field and gap power.

Catcher Austin Hedges, who has a reputation for being a good defender but broke out at the plate in the minors last year, is also expected to get a chance to play regularly.

Position battle The most optimistic way of framing the Padres rotation is that it is rife with opportunity. Sinkerballer Luis Perdomo and lefty Clayton Richards return from last year, with right-handers Jhoulys Chacin and Trevor Cahill signing as free agents. Lefty Christian Friedrich and right-handers Jarred Cosart and Paul Clemens are also in the mix.

For the first 17 years of Billy Beane’s tenure as general manager, the Oakland Athletics managed not to lose 90 games. But after a 93-loss 2016, they’ve surpassed that mark two years in a row.

It’s possible 2017 won’t be a whole lot better, but the Athletics are at least hoping elements of their future core begin to coalesce this season.

The A’s can see the makings of a solid future rotation, and it’s possible that by the end of the year their top position-player prospects will have graduated to the majors and, they hope, begun to establish themselves.

Top draw Despite a miserable 2016, righthander Sonny Gray is the A’s most recognizable name – and, potentially, their most valuable asset.

The A’s will be hoping for a rebound from Gray, who posted a 5.69 ERA in 22 starts and spent most of the final two months of the season on the disabled list with a right forearm strain.

If Gray bounces back – and a handful of other things go their way – the Athletics could surprise. But it seems just as likely a rebound for Gray would lead to a potential trade for the still-retooling A’s.

Position battle Rookie Ryon Healy was one of the A’s bright spots in 2016, but the offseason signing of Trevor Plouffe likely means Healy’s time at third base is over.

That seems to create questions at first base. Do the A’s stick with the lighthitting but defensively sound Yonder Alonso? Or would they rather not relegate Healy to designated hitter and instead opt for him to get the majority of the time at first base?

Breaking in After Sean Manaea and Kendall Graveman took steps toward solidifying themselves in the rotation last year, the A’s have two more pitchers who could do the same in 2017.

Right-handers Jharel Cotton and Frankie Montas, both of whom were acquired in last year’s Rich Hill/Josh Reddick trade with the Dodgers, are likely to get extended big-league looks this season. Cotton already impressed the A’s last year, posting a 2.15 ERA in five starts late in the season.

Top draw Lefty Madison Bumgarner, already a legend in San Francisco for carrying the Giants to a World Series victory in 2014, managed to turn in the best year of his career last year.

On the mound, that is, where he posted a 2.74 ERA with 251 strikeouts in 226 2/3 innings. However, his numbers dipped a bit at the plate, but the fact that anyone is paying attention to his offensive production helps show why he’s so fascinating to watch. He still managed to hit three homers in 86 at-bats, giving him 14 long balls in his career.

Breaking in The Giants are going to give veteran Matt Cain the first chance at securing the fifth starter’s job, but if he falters – and, given his results/health the past few years, it’s not hard to envision that scenario – they’ll likely turn to young left-hander Ty Blach.

Blach already has impressed the Giants by throwing well last September, including going eight shutout innings to outduel Clayton Kershaw in Game 161.

No team won more games in the American League last season than the Rangers and no team in baseball won as much with so much drama.

The Rangers not only posted an MLB-best 49 come-from-behind wins among their 95 victories, they set a modern-era record by going 36-11 in one-run games for a .766 winning percentage. For the second straight season, however, their season ended in the division series at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays.

A key to the Rangers’ success this season will be the performance of their bullpen, which was shaky at times but managed to set a franchise record a year ago with 56 saves and recorded 41 wins, the most by any bullpen since the 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers.

Top draw Though he turns 38 in April, third baseman Adrian Beltre remains one of the more dependable stars in baseball and that doesn’t figure to change in 2017.

An almost certain Hall of Famer, Beltre finished with at least 30 homers and 100 RBIs for the fourth time in the past seven years for Texas. He also won his fifth Gold Glove award.

Beltre, who is signed through 2018, became the fourth third baseman in history to reach 1,500 career RBIs and he's just 58 hits shy of 3,000.

2016 record: 95-67.

Big changes: Texas brought back Mike Napoli for a third time. He likely will be the starting first baseman. The Rangers also invited two other big bats to spring training: James Loney and Josh Hamilton on minor-league deals. Center fielder Carlos Gomez was re-signed, but a handful of regulars left via free agency, including Carlos Beltran, Ian Desmond and Colby Lewis.

Position battle The top of the starting rotation is set with Cole Hamels, Yu Darvish and Martin Perez, but the final two spots have to be nailed down in spring training. The top candidates include newcomers Andrew Cashner and Tyson Ross, but also A.J. Griffin, Allen Webster and young prospects such as Yohander Mendez, Connor Sadzeck.

Ross, who turns 30 in April, likely won’t be ready for Opening Day following surgery to alleviate thoracic outlet syndrome. From 2013-15 with the Padres, he logged 516 1/3 innings with a 3.07 ERA and 9.2 strikeouts per nine innings.

Breaking in He’s just 23, but second baseman Rougned Odor has shown he can pack a punch. His right hook to the face of Toronto slugger Jose Bautista went viral, and he smacked 33 home runs in just his third MLB season.

The Venezuelan scored 89 runs, drove in 88 more and also stole 14 bases. He had difficulty reaching base on a consistent basis, but the Rangers feel confident he’ll be able to reach base more than 30 percent of the time given that he hit .271 last season and should trend upward this year.

A year after winning 95 games and clawing out eight postseason comeback victories to win their first World Series title in 30 years, the Royals fell back to 81-81.

The cornerstones are still in place, but with four members in the final years of their contracts – first baseman Eric Hosmer, third baseman Mike Moustakas, center fielder Lorenzo Cain and shortstop Alcides Escobar – there is a real concern about the championship window is closing.

The death of starting pitcher Yordano Ventura this winter from a car accident in his native Dominican Republic puts more of a damper on the outlook.

It’s made some industry insiders suggest the Royals should consider trading off core talent to begin reshaping and rebuilding the roster.

“What we do is consider all different scenarios,” General Manager Dayton Moore said at the winter meetings.

“But we’re very focused on winning in 2017 and being in a better position in 2018 and beyond.”

Top draw Danny Duffy has emerged as one of the better left-handers in the game and watching his devastating slider dance and move is worth the price of admission. It’s a pitch he perfected last season when he set career highs in wins (12), starts (26) and strikeouts (188) while posting a 3.15 ERA. The Royals rewarded him with a five-year, $65 million contract extension in January, which some skeptics likely consider a risk given the pitcher walked away from the game in 2010 to “reassess his life priorities.”

The good news is they finally seem to have some depth at the position. Joe Maddon told his team to “embrace the target.” And the Chicago Cubs did.

Reeling off 103 regular-season wins and battling back from a 3-1 series deficit to beat the Cleveland Indians in a wild Game 7, the Cubs captured their first World Series championship since 1908.

“Now we’re just a really good baseball team,” General Manager Jed Hoyer told CSN Chicago. “We’re not a team that has a curse or issues winning. Now we’re a world champion, and we move forward.

Next year when a game is close in the playoffs … nobody is going to worry about something bizarre happening.

We’ve been through this. We’ve won.”

The Cubs’ pitching staff led Major League Baseball with a 3.15 ERA and 15 shutouts, and the offense scored the second-most runs (808) in the National League. With the majority of their team back in 2017, the Cubs return as World Series favorites.

Top draw There are plenty of stars to watch on this team, but when you check out the Cubs you’d be wise to focus on Kris Bryant, who followed up winning National League Rookie of the Year in 2015 by winning NL Most Valuable Player this past season at age 24.

Bryant hit .292 with 39 home runs and 102 RBIs and led the NL with a 7.67 WAR and 121 runs scored. It isn’t just his keen sense of hitting that makes Bryant such a kingpin to the Cubs’ success. It’s his ability to play defense virtually anywhere his team needs him to play.

Position battle The biggest trick for the Cubs will be finding enough at-bats for young slugger Kyle Schwarber, who is a defensive liability in a very crowded outfield.

Center field will be manned by the lefty-righty combination of newly acquired Jon Jay and youngster Albert Almora Jr. Jason Heyward struggled mightily at the plate, but was rated as the best defensive right fielder in the National League.

That leaves left field, where Schwarber may have to split time with Ben Zobrist now that Javier Baez seemingly has locked down second base.

Breaking in Speaking of defense, you won’t find many much better at covering his position than Baez. He has amazing instincts, arm strength and alarmingly quick hands. The offensive potential is there for Baez, 24, who hit .273 with 14 homers and 59 RBIs last year, but he tends to overswing and flail on too many pitches.
