A few weeks ago, Phoenix real estate agent Bobby Lieb drove by a north Central house he's trying to sell and noticed his for sale sign wasn't in the yard. The next day he noticed another one of his signs was missing. Then another. And another. Other agents began to call him asking if they could borrow signs because their's had vanished, too. For sale signs are disappearing all over metro Phoenix. And not just because the houses have sold. This may not be a case for a Sherlock Holmes, but it’s no small deal to the agents losing money and signs. Real estate agents have lost at least 150 signs during the past few weeks. Those signs cost about $50 each. Even in this digital age, open house and for sale signs are important tools for real estate agents. Most home shoppers still drive neighborhoods they are interested in. And checking out houses for sale is still a Valley pastime. But some or someone seems to think the signs are a nuisance or even neighborhood blight. “Someone is taking our signs and that impacts our home sales, Lieb of HomeSmart Elite told me. He recently lost several dozen signs in north Central Phoenix. “The signs cost money, he said. “And it costs the seller if the house doesn’t sell because there’s no sign for potential buyers to see. Last week, Lieb sent out an e-mail blast to other agents to see if they had lost signs. The responses surprised and infuriated him. “I have only heard about 150 or so stolen signs so far, but I guarantee many more have been taken, he said. Tim Knittel of Realty Executives told me he had four signs stolen last week. Lieb said last year a volunteer with Phoenix’s Blight Buster program picked up some of his signs and put them in the garage of the house they advertised. Lieb and members of the Phoenix Association of Realtors met with See REAGOR, Page 3R
