Moving into a condo or townhome is the perfect time to organize your living spaces

hen someone moves into a condo or townhome, it is oUeneither a ÿrst-home, last-home or vacation-home.
Although it’s not always the case, this type of move is also oUeninto a smaller space than where a homeowner previously lived — meaning that eScien t upfront downsizing and the implementation of creative aUer-move storage solutions becomes much more important to achieving a calm and clutter-free lifestyle.
We recently reached out to some savvy local entrepreneurs who oWered their advice for how best to downsize as well as how best to get — and just as importantly, stay — organized when living in a smaller-thanused-to space. Here’s what they had to say:
What are the most important things a downsizer needs to do?
Take inventory. Xe ÿ rst thing you need to do is get a handle on all your stuW.Taking inventory prepares you emotionally to consider the possibility of letting go of those things that are not necessary. Decide what to keep. X is is the most diSc ult part of downsizing — what to keep and what to get rid of. If you focus on what you love and absolutely want to keep, the rest will need to be eliminated one way or another. Deciding on what to keep also keeps you positive on what you want in your new place. Simplify. One important thing to remember when downsizing is that letting go of the things you don’t regularly use can truly set you free. Follow the rule ‘if you don’t love it or use it, lose it’. Focus on what’s important and what really matters and let go of the rest. You will be happy you did. —Doreen Collins

Doing a little bit of purging and packing every day in anticipation of a big move works best. Most people procrastinate, and when this happens, they usually enlist the help of others and then everything gets thrown into boxes. I have actually worked with clients whose helpers boxed up trash which was then subsequently moved to the new place. â€”Andrea Brundage

use everything they own. By gathering and organizing items in â€˜likeâ€™ groups as we unpack them, the client can easily identify the items that are duplicates and maybe not used at all. For example, when all the electric appliances are gathered in one spot, I can be pretty conĂżdent there is a pasta maker or snow cone machine that they have not seen or used in years. They are â€˜saving stuff for their childrenâ€™. Let me say with conĂżdence â€” having watched older parents beg their children to come take away all they have saved for them â€” they donâ€™t want it. Her e is very little they will want as they move away and start their own collection.

For instance, your furniture might not Ăżt just right or you might not have enough wall space to hang your photos and artwork. Start one closet at a time. Pick your most dreaded closet and empty the items into an extra room. Divide the contents into â€˜give to grown children and family membersâ€™, â€˜donateâ€™, â€˜storageâ€™ and â€˜trashâ€™. Identify three â€˜canâ€™t live withoutâ€™ items. For example, decide what furniture pieces are a must-Ăżt for your new home. Donâ€™t linger too long over one item. Put it aside and keep momentum going. Be decisive. Whatâ€™s your best piece of downsizing advice?
It is important to live well in the space we are in whether it is 500 or 5,000 square-feet. Va t means only allowing the things we love and that support us in our space. Do not take anything with you [to a new home] that you do not love, use or wear. Vis applies to everything from clothes and shoes to books and household items. My second piece of advice is to ask yourself â€˜how much of this (whatever this is) will I realistically need or use at the new place?â€™ â€”Andrea Brundage

What are your favorite creative space-saving solutions?
For kitchens, itâ€™s the blind-corner Lazy Susan.
Ver e are several types, but the most popular is the type that installs in a corner base cabinet where two counters meet. You open one door and the contents cannot only be pulled completely out, but a second set of pull-outs are accessible which otherwise couldnâ€™t be reached.
