Who will I meet?

Randolph-Macon College Honors students come from across the United States and around the globe, representing broad academic, social, and athletic interests and deep commitments to academic curiosity and learning. Honors students are able to pursue any academic major and minor, join social and Greek organizations, and be active members of intercollegiate or intramural athletic teams.

Randolph-Macon Honors students are among the most involved on campus, taking advantage of the full-spectrum of campus activities, often in leadership roles. The R-MC Honors Program believes all areas of college life should be explored and experienced.

When we come back together, we bring back rich experiences and become better versions of ourselves.

After Acceptance New Randolph-Macon Honors students are contacted by an Honors New Student Transition Captain, leaders within the Honors Program and on campus committed to helping Honors students transition to Randolph-Macon and become involved on campus to achieve academic and social success.

HONORS CONNECTIONS The Randolph-Macon College Honors Program is affiliated with the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC), the Southern Regional Honors Council (SRHC), and the Virginia Collegiate Honors Council (VCHC). R-MC Honors students have the opportunity to travel to annual meetings of these organizations, present their research, participate in conference servicelearning activities, and network with other Honors students. The Randolph-Macon Honors Program helps offset the cost of conference participation through grants.

Honors FOCUS Extending learning beyond the classroom is cornerstone to Honors learning. The Honors FOCUS Series is a multi-disciplinary exploration into one theme throughout the academic year.

Honors students are challenged to face, head-on, often difficult and sometimes controversial topics like equity and inclusion and medical ethics. The centerpiece of Honors FOCUS is the common read, a book distributed to each member of the Honors community over the summer. Once back on campus, Honors students participate in discussions about the book and attend guest lectures, special events, screenings, and galas.

Honors Curriculum The Randolph-Macon College Honors Program understands that our students enjoy being engaged and challenged and are curious about the world around them. Because of this, Honors courses are not designed to be harder or more work, just a different kind of work than a typical college course. Randolph-Macon Honors students fulfill many of their general education requirements through Honors Program courses.

THESE COURSES PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH: • Class sizes limited to 16 students • Novel approaches to disciplinary topics • A collaborative learning environment The R-MC Honors Program offers unique courses only available to Honors students. These courses are taught by distinguished R-MC faculty and community leaders across all academic disciplines.

In Honors, learning is achieved through immersion, exploration, collaboration, and demonstration. Learning is achieved by asking questions, by testing assumptions, and by considering alternate possibilities. Randolph-Macon Honors students learn together, for, with, and because of one another.

At Randolph-Macon, Honors students are creative in their individualized approach to course materials. Working collaboratively, they ask questions of truth and find solutions to challenging real-world problems. For example, in HONR 300: Project-Based Learning, students serve as consultants as they engage with a community partner to develop concrete, workable solutions to real-world problems.

HONORS ENRICHMENT UNITS As part of their Honors Program curriculum, all Honors Students design their own Honors Enrichment Unit where they take a deep dive into a subject they are passionate about to learn and discover more. Honors Enrichment Units can take many forms, including an internship, a study abroad experience, engagement with the community, or original research with a faculty member in their area of expertise.

HOW TO APPLY Entering first year students, transfer students, and current RandolphMacon College students may apply to enter the Honors Program, if they meet eligibility requirements.

Entering first-year students with a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or above are invited to apply to the Honors Program. Application instructions will be e-mailed to qualifying students who are accepted to the College.

Applications are considered on a rolling basis.

Transfer students with a 3.5 GPA or above in their college level coursework are invited to apply to the Honors Program. Application instructions will be e-mailed to qualifying students who are accepted to the College. Applications are considered at the time of a transfer student’s application. The Honors Program accepts Honors coursework in transfer and encourages applications from those who have completed an Honors Program at a community college.

Current R-MC students with a 3.25+ GPA in their first year or a 3.5+ GPA in their second or third years may apply to the Honors Program. Open admissions occur in the January term of each academic year. The internal application consists of an application form, an essay, and a letter of recommendation from a RandolphMacon faculty member. All current Randolph-Macon students receive an e-mail in early January with application instructions.

Financial Assistance All recipients of the Randolph-Macon College Brock Scholarship, Lettie Pate Whitehead Scholars, and select Presidential Scholars are automatically eligible to enter the Honors Program. Learn more about scholarship opportunities through admissions counselors.

Thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends of the Randolph-Macon Honors Program, Honors students are eligible for small grants to offset the costs of their own professional development. The Honors Program offers academic grants to apply for visas to study abroad, applications for graduate/professional school, or travel to a conference to present research.

Earn the Distinction Randolph-Macon College Honors Program graduates set themselves apart from the crowd.

Intellectually talented students benefit from enriched educational experiences.

Honors graduates complete four Honors courses, engage in an Honors Enrichment Unit, while maintaining at least a 3.5 grade point average and active involvement in the Randolph-Macon College Honors Program and the broader Randolph-Macon community.

Students who complete the program receive an Honors designation on their diploma and transcript, and are awarded the Honors Medal to wear at Commencement.
