pring truly has been in the air and we’ve experienced all the wonderful things I associate with the season.

I, for one, enjoyed dinner at Buckingham Palace in May. It was an intimate dinner for 20 couples hosted by the Countess of Wessex in aid of DEBRA, a great cause which I hope my readers already know about. It’s something I support whenever I can and we will feature in the event in our next issue. June is always a great month with so many wonderful events. One in particular is the Great British Drama at Royal Ascot which runs 17th-21st June. Now is the time to be looking for beautiful hats and dresses! What could be better than a bit of British pomp and a fabulous day at the races? If racing is not your cup of tea but tennis is, you’ll find that the Boodles, where the stars of tennis prepare for Wimbledon, has returned and will take place on those same days. The Boodles attracts great players such as Novak Djokovic, Tomas Berdych, Richard Gasquet, Sam Querry and Grigor Dimitrov who were all part of the all-star line-up in 2013 and we are certain that 2014 will be no different. It is, of course, also the polo season May-September and we’ve even started early at V V at the APES Hill Polo Club in Barbados where fashion meets polo. Sir Charles was very charming to our photographer and we will show you some great shots of the interiors of this beautiful colonial estate. It is certainly a luxurious spot - I wouldn’t mind having a round of golf there! For now though, I am happy at Bearwood Lakes Golf Club which is, for me, the most beautiful course closest to London.

Хозяин клуба Чарльз гостеприимно принял нашего фотографа, и мы представляем вашему вниманию несколько изумительных снимков этого роскошного места. Я бы не отказалась сыграть там в гольф! Our journey began in a quiet indoor courtyard where the porters, dressed in elegant tweed suits and caps, greeted us and warmly invited us to come through to a hall at the end of a beautiful corridor of glass and brass frames. The hotel has 262 guest rooms and 44 suites. The interiors were created by the famous design company Tony Chi & Associates. The respectful treatment of the buildingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s original elements and the ways in which these have been combined with lacquer, textural veneers, prismatic glass and other embellishments have made for unusual, striking effects.

V V highly recommends a visit to the Scarfes Bar situated on the ground floor. There are two entrances, one from an arched doorway at the entrance to the hotel, allowing those who are not guests to come and enjoy this exquisite place. The majestic marble columns from the early 20th century go terrifically well with the wooden shelves, stacked with antiquarian books and other trinkets. The interior is complemented by low velvet and leather chairs, a real fire and huge metallic chandeliers made in Italy. In the evenings, the bar resounds with live music. Some light blues and the sounds of the piano create a wonderfully relaxing atmosphere. You can also dine in the bar or just order some nibbles to have with your drinks.

HEATHROW News Новости Хитроу The much anticipated Terminal 2 of London's Heathrow Airport is set to open this month and will feature designer shops and restaurants along with the world's first Personal Shopping Lounge, offering a brand new personal shopping service to all passengers.

A fifteen minute menu has also been designed for those with only a little time to spare before catching their flight. Heathrow will be the first airport to offer a personal shopping service to all passengers and The Queen's Terminal is to play host to the world's first personal shopping lounge in an airport. The Caviar House seafood bar will overlook the airfield and each of the 51 seats is equipped with an Ipad displaying menus and information on caviar from around the world. 12

Specialising in global cuisine, The Gorgeous Kitchen is a collaboration between four female celebrity chefs. The kitchen will serve afternoon tea from noon daily. Harrods will be opening a Fine Watch room based on the iconic space within the Knightsbridge store. The store will carry an edited selection of watches by Hublot, Chopard and IWC amongst others and will have private consultation areas allowing privacy for clients whilst browsing. To mark its 150th Anniversary, John Lewis is opening its first airport location at T2. The store will offer fashion and accessories alongside many of its own brand goods.

World Duty Free:

A dedicated concierge desk offering gift wrapping and assistance is just one of the delights at World Duty Free at T2. There will also be a wide range of complementary preflight treatments from brands including Crème De La Mer and Jo Malone.

Sunglass Hut:

The new Sunglass Hut features iPads with a virtual mirror allowing clients to try sunglasses and post pictures on social media sites to friends before purchasing. The store will stock selected luxury items by Prada and Dolce & Gabbana.

Henri-Émile-Benoît Matisse (1869-1954) was a master of expressive drawing, leading colourist and one of the forerunners of modern art. After being diagnosed with cancer in 1941 he found it increasingly difficult to paint and turned his hand to cutting shapes out of painted paper using scissors. “Painting with scissors” was what he called it, painstakingly arranging and rearranging the cut shapes until the desired balance of form and colour was achieved, after which the finished composition was glued to paper, canvas or board. The resultant maquettes were created for commissions, books, stained glass windows and ceramics that resulted in some of the most influential works of his entire career that spanned over half a century. The new medium gave him a new lease of life, illustrated through their expressive bold colours and vast scale, simultaneously imbued with an engaging simplicity and creative sophistication. Of the 120 works on show highlights include his very first cut-outs created between 1943-1947 which comprise Jazz, 1947, a book of 20 plates, alongside an album which contains copies of the 20 plates with hand written text, only 100 copies of which were printed. This will be the first time both the book and album have been on display outside of France.

hristie’s once again held its famous Ski Sale at the South Kensington branch of the auction house. The sale gave collectors the chance to own some of the most sought after pieces of Louis Vuitton luggage. For over 150 years, Louis Vuitton luggage has been the choice of the discerning traveller. Vuitton was originally a craftsman and he created some of the most iconic pieces in the brand's legacy such as the monogrammed trunks and suitcases. Some of the lots on sale at the auction featured the initials and labels of their original owners. Two of the best examples of this were trunks in the monogram canvas once owned by the legendary Norma Shearer. Norma was one of the most celebrated actresses in America during the 20s and 30s. She was known for her roles playing sophisticated women in films and for her contribution to fashion during such an important time for women. The first was a wardrobe trunk originating from the 1930s and was monogrammed with N.S in yellow and red lettering. The second piece was a much sought after shoe trunk which featured the same initials and 30 individual shoe drawers each marked ‘L. Vuitton’. The wardrobe trunk was used to store her clothes and shoes whilst she travelled and the shoe compartments were labelled with descriptions of each pair of shoes they contained.

By Friday, I had exchanged contracts.” Built in 1914 by the Wades of Birmingham, a wealthy iron and steel family, Honiley Hall is located on the site of a historic manor dating back to Saxon times and later mentioned the Domesday Book. A RETURN TO GLORY Honiley Hall was a family home up until 1964 but when the Wades moved out it was initially used for a number of non-residential purposes and over time it had been allowed to deteriorate. Peter’s vision was to use his resources to reestablish the Hall as a magnificent and luxurious family home. Honiley’s iconic rooms have been thoughtfully restored. For instance, in the dining room, an oak floor that had darkened over time has been returned to its original lustre and complemented with an enormous mahogany table to stunning effect. Elsewhere the period ceiling rose in the reading room has been reconstructed and beautiful cornice work restored. Peter has also restoring much of the original architectural joinery, and including, dado rails, decorated in Lincrusta to a 1918 pattern. The wooden beams that characterise Honiley have been lightened to create a more modern, inviting feel. During the Wade family’s tenure the house boasted 15 bedrooms. Today, there are seven en-suites while the remaining rooms have been converted into a two-bedroom 28

The formal gardens are also sufficiently spacious to permit helicopters to land and take off. “It’s a facility that has proved incredibly useful,” says Peter. “Flying in provides a great way to fully appreciate the house and grounds.” LEAVING A LEGACY An entrepreneur who made his fortune in the global telecoms market, Peter Warwick now has extensive property and business interests. With his partner Lenna Bauerly, he is currently developing an innovative online service – www. nowbanana.com – which consolidates crowdfunding projects from around the globe. “It’s a Rightmove for the crowdfunding market,” he says. Honiley Hall has provided not only a home but also an ideal base from which to run his business interests. But it’s time to move on to his next project, the development of a modern, Regency-style, environmentally friendly home on the banks of the River Avon. The new occupant will take possession not just of the hall itself but the much of the furniture as Peter is taking only a few key pieces. As such the sale offers an English country

his year's Salone Del Mobile showcased the best in luxury furniture and design. Now in its 53rd year, the event held in Milan played host to some of the finest luxury brands and debuts. Bentley premiered its home collection which is inspired by the interiors of Bentley cars and was designed by architect Carlo Colombo and Daniele Ceccomori, head of Bentley Design. The debut collection comprises sofas, tables and beds as well as an extensive accessories collection, each piece of which is delicately crafted using precious fabrics. Blankets are hemmed using mink and the same briar wood and marble used in the cars are used to create unique furniture. Key pieces shown at Salone Del Mobile included a Kensington Royce Armchair which was presented in an ice grey leather structure with champagne shades on the seat itself. High fashion houses have also set a new benchmark in creating designer furniture with Fendi Casa bringing an elegant dimension to Salone. Fendi collaborated with decorator Thierry Lemaire to produce a collection that pays homage to its star icon. Using lean minimalist shapes and colours, the furniture celebrates Fendi's style and each piece is marked with the star. Muted tones of cool grey and blues give a stylish feel. An example of this is the Star Table and Stardust chair set; crafted in velvet and wood, these pieces are sculptures in their own right. There are two types of nightwear: Pyjamas, which are now presented in luxurious fabrics and prints, and Loungewear, slightly less formal clothing designed in durable fabrics and shapes for comfort. Men’s nightwear has become a style staple since Marc Jacobs showed his collection for Louis Vuitton’s Fall Winter 2013 show. The entire show was styled around pyjamas. DIOR Christian Dior designed its house motif, the Cannage, in 1947. It was inspired by the Napoleon chairs that were used for Dior’s fashion show. The Cannage motif is now the main signature of Dior’s famed Lady Dior Bag. The handbag was first launched in 1995 and has remained in production to this day. The legendary bag was made famous by Princess Diana who was given the bag during a trip to Paris and it instantly became a success. Not only did The Princess of Wales order every version available of the bag but she was also seen constantly carrying it, leading to its popularity. A year after its launch, the bag was renamed Lady Dior as a homage to Princess Diana with her blessing. FASHION Asprey Asprey presents its British heritage and vast history in the form of its 1781 handbag, a classic that has been reworked over time by accessories designer Katie Hillier. The 1781 collection commemorates the year that Asprey was first established. The bag is a reflection on today’s traveller and is made in five different sizes ranging from a mini size 1781 to the weekender which is a holdall sized style of the bag. The 1781 bag is available in a range of exotic skins from python to ostrich and crocodile all in both seasonal and classic colours. Asprey’s fine craftsmanship is apparent in the bag’s every detail: the interior of each bag is suede in the matching colour of the exterior and most of the bags are designed five floors above the iconic Asprey Bond Street store. The Ebury is a long standing Anya Hindmarch classic and one of the first bags that Anya designed. n an interior designed children’s room, creativity roams free and fun is the order of the day Children are the future. They are the future of industry, politics and the world. They are certainly the future of interior design, where the call for designed children’s rooms has grown hugely in recent years. No longer content with a slap of fresh paint and a couple of posters, children’s rooms are now themed, styled and designed, just like the rooms of their discerning parents from a very early age! So why the growing popularity? For Roselind Wilson from Roselind Wilson Design it is linked to the increasing number of families choosing to extend their property rather than move: “Families are opting to create more space for their families, as the value added to the property is greater than moving elsewhere. Clients are opting for well-designed, considered space for the children’s rooms and play rooms, to be attractive for all selling points. One to make their children happy and on another note to achieve better selling prices should they move on. Clare Pascoe of Pascoe Interiors agrees that it has a lot to do with the increasing number of people who require the skills of a designer for new builds. “Interior design is no longer an elite service; people of all walks of life now enjoy designing their homes and see the value in living in a more aesthetic environment, our lifestyles have changed greatly in the last few years. Ask any child what their dream bedroom would be and you would get an infinite possibility of answers. From a castle to a jungle, Atlantis to a ballet studio, children are all different and their imaginations are just as varied. Of course for the designer it’s a question of marrying the children’s vision and the parents’ specifications to create the perfect room to meet the brief. From the parents perspective the brief is usually to design multifunctional spaces that are future proofed to allow the space to adapt and grow with the growing needs of the child. Clare explains. “This brief is often different to the child’s perspective and this is where it gets really fun for designers. Children are great to work with as their creativity is clear of boundaries, and designing a dream bedroom through the eyes of the child is great fun, and seeing their great joy when it is revealed makes the challenges worth it.” The reaction of the client is also one of Roselind’s favourite parts of designing for a younger audience. “Children are so expressive of their emotions, which is by far the greatest reward for the hard work.”

“We’ve been having fun with tactile surfaces lately. Things like felt to stick things to or grass effect carpet along the floor and up the wall. My new approach is to make a child’s room tactile and fun: a place to interact with and stimulate creativity and learning.” The range of materials, products and furnishings available in the children’s market is enough to make any adult very jealous, but is a designer’s dream; they can let their creativity run wild to create a world of pure imagination.

If you wait too long you might be too late, as nurseries are increasingly seen as the only solid step towards a good prep. Demand for places in leading nurseries outstrips supply, and working out what you want from what is available is a real minefield, through which a good educational consultant can guide you. “There is a massive gap in the market due to the lack of good quality nurseries in central London. Too many children and not enough space,” says Evgenia Lazareva, MD of Carfax Education, herself a parent, planning to open her own nursery in London soon. Parents have to be prepared for the fact that it is never going to be the same as in their home country. The approach is different. However, it is worth remembering that British education has always been at the top of the league. You need to establish exactly what your family will need to determine which nursery will suit. Take Kensington and the surrounding area, for instance. If it is crucial to you for the nursery to be linked to a pre-prep, then you may wish to consider Garden House; if you want your child to start nursery at age 1, Pippa Pop-ins might work; families looking for a bilingual environment could get in touch with The French Nursery or Kensington Gardens Nursery (both French/English). Then you need to consider facilities, prep school transfer, length of day, holiday provision… Crucially, you need to get a feel for the place. “Many nursery schools are owned and managed by large corporations out of touch with the day to day requirements of the children. My first suggestion is to meet the owners,” says Pippa Deakin, founder of Pippa Pop-ins, a chain of nurseries she has recently sold.

When choosing a nursery, look at menu examples and lists of available activities. The nursery should be spotlessly clean, display attention to detail, have a clear timetable and, preferably, some outside space. Thus, you will know what your child will be doing every day and also that they are in a stimulating environment. It is advisable to find out about overall staff turnover and whether the nursery has the same staff every day so that your child is not overwhelmed by the number of different faces. Remember that the decision always lies with you. Nurseries have to register with Ofsted, and undergo regular check-ups, while this is optional for au-pairs. Register in advance and get recommendations (for example, from friends whose children attend). Do keep enquiring. If and when a place becomes available, nurseries will not call back everyone who was interested. Our “Fashion meets Polo” photo shoot, with Anna Nicholas, Creative Director of Fashionable Photography, was hosted by the Williams family’s world renowned Apes Hill Polo Club in the beautiful Caribbean Island of Barbados. How did Apes Hill come about? Sir Charles Othniеl Williams (nicknamed COW Williams, after his initials) received his knighthood in 2000, for his huge contribution to construction, sport, agriculture and business in Barbados and the West Indies. C.O. Williams Construction Limited was formed in 1969 and has grown into the largest Construction and Development Company in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, producing landmark developments such as Port St Charles, the premier yacht marina and lifestyle resort. (Named after Sir Charles) The day that Charles went to work in 1951, his mother gave him the best advice that he has ever had: “Son, save your money and buy land. The Lord is making no more.” He has never departed from that policy. And so his construction operation led him to develop Apes Hill, his ex-dairy farm, into an amazing 470-acre polo, golf and residential community. He describes the land as, “Just the most beautiful piece of land in the world!” He’s right! Straddling the island with views to both the Atlantic and Caribbean seas, it is a truly magnificent spot that he and his partners in the development, Landmark and Wentworth Club should rightly be very proud of. 66

The first Polo game was played on the field in January 2003 with three generations of the Williams family playing together for the first time. Sir Charles, his two sons Stephen and Teddy and his grandson Oliver and granddaughter Camilla. The field is aptly named the “Elliott Williams” polo field in honour of Sir Charles’ father. This was not the only first. The first Barbados Open final, now considered to be the most exciting and popular tournament in Barbados which hosts both foreign and local players, was held at Apes Hill Club for the first five years. A veteran polo player and captain of the Barbados Polo Club for over 35 years, Sir Charles is a passionate and intensely competitive man. We watched him jumping up from the side-lines, running up and down the side of the polo field, shouting encouragement to his team and also in the thick of it, as he still plays top quality polo, on the field too. His granddaughter, Camilla, was our host during our photo shoot, where we were given full use of the beautiful colonial styled clubhouse and unprecedented access into the 108 polo pony stable block. The politics of eco-tourism has also led to the defence of the country’s indigenous wildlife. Our first stop was the Sabuk Lodge in central Kenya on the northern side of the Laikipia Plateau. The Sabuk Lodge is made up of six cottages situated at a height from which there is a magnificent view of the hills, mountains and river. “Jambo!” said a woman with a dog who welcomed us. This 70

was Verity, the owner. After a little tour and some drinks we decided to have a rest. On entering the room where we were to spend the night we were surprised to find that we appeared to be missing… several walls! But, as past experience has proved, things couldn’t be any other way! In Kenya, you just want to spend every minute absorbing the beauty of nature with every cell in your body so a wall is a barrier between you and that great untouched landscape. Anyone who’s seen an African sunset, sunrise or vast star-covered night sky understands our drift. After overcoming our little confusion and a perfect nap, we headed out on safari. It’s a strange feeling just watching while these great animals do you the favour of putting up with your presence; it’s admirable and bewitching all at once. Sabuk Lodge is also known for its camel rides and picnics by the river. As with other New African Territories lodges and camps, there is a bed night fee at Sabuk which means that there is a charge for one night’s stay per guest which goes to the local Community budget. The village of Nalare is not far and even the smallest contribution makes all the difference. Verity helped to build a girls’ dormitory at a school herself, providing it with furniture and materials, and taught the local women how to make Elephant - dung paper which is considered special. All this makes Sabuk Lodge the ideal place for a full, informative experience which the whole family can enjoy.

Our next point of call was Serian Camp on the banks of the river Mara out in the secluded Mara North valley. The camp’s founder, Alex Walker, is an eco-safari ideologist. He has given work to many of the Masai, the indigenous peoples of the Masai Mara region. As the fight for land between farmers and conservationists continues, it’s extremely important that the locals have access to work. A walk or a drive in the jeep with one of the experienced guides, many of whom are Masai, can help you feel and understand the lay of the land better. Every separate camp is equipped with its own jeep and guide, allowing you to develop a schedule that works for you. The managers, Roisin and Adrian, will gladly offer their advice. Old timers would recommend a visit to Serian Camp during the zebra migrations. In November or May, you can see newborn cubs and spend the rest of the time simply enjoying a bird safari and walks along the river. You can also sleep in camps by the river, one of which is near the hippos and from the other you can catch fish standing on the terrace.

The most delightful thing is the Nest, a tree house designed not only for having meals under the stars but also for spending the night. The sounds of the river, birds and hippos combined with an endless starlit sky will make you feel calm and unusually free. If you’re lucky enough to be there for a full moon, you’ll see how close the moon is to the expanse of the river. The next evening found us already at Kipalo on the border of Kenya’s biggest national park Tsavo. An initiative was originally set up here to protect wild elephants which, robbed of their territory, had caused the local population a lot of damage and to tackle poachers who were threatening the elephants with extinction for their ivory tusks.

This is a camp, that includes a restaurant, a relaxation zone and a pool up on the hill. You couldn’t bring yourself to call a set of luxurious tents with every possible facility and a breath-taking view of the valley a “camp”. The installation at Kipalo still remains unfinished and the owners have big plans for making an enormous oasis in amongst the wildlife. Every bedside table includes a whistle and a torch; although the animals don’t tend to come close, it’s much better to be on your guard. As well as going on walking safaris or out in a jeep, here you can undertake an actual ranger course. There are several levels and after each one you have to pass tests (for which you receive a certificate). It’s a serious but exciting experience. You feel as if you’re a real adventurer and a defender of nature. Our last stop was Delta Dunes on the delta of the river Tana that opens out into the Indian Ocean. Overjoyed at our accustomed lack of walls, we went for dinner and watched the most beautiful sunset we had ever seen. At Delta Dunes, everyone can find something to do which is to their taste. You can go fishing or for a boat ride along the river Tana where you’ll meet families of hippos. You can spend an unforgettable day on a completely empty beach where only baboons will be watching you from a distance and swim in the ocean as much as you like. You can learn how to use a “sand yacht” on the most beautiful dunes or just walk about with a camera in the hope that you’ll be able to translate all the magnificence and peace that surrounds you into a digital format. There’s also a little fishing village nearby where you can buy fresh seafood. Motor boats only go along the river with the permission of Delta Dunes and according to an agreed timetable. This is due to a concern for the surroundings, although the locale well-supported. Forgetting about phones, the internet and other business, we just relaxed properly, calmly and without a care in the world. And now for dessert: a few words about food. Dear gourmands, if you prefer food that needs no culinary tricks but still has a million tasty nuances, you will definitely find it here in Kenya. The dinner menu is renewed throughout the year and the lunch menu is changed on a weekly basis. The Blue Lobster Cooked in Nacre to start is one of Pierre's signature dishes and just one of the many that he has become renowned to have mastered. Alongside Pierre's talent is head Pastry Chef, Stephane Tranchet. After training with Pierre Gagnaire for ten years, he now brings his tantalising creations to the restaurant for afternoon tea and desserts. Of course once you have enjoyed all the delights Paris has to offer, with its exquisite shopping, dining and hotels it will be difficult to leave, but when you do the Eurostar is just as easy to catch back to London from Paris.

Jewellery art continues to forge ahead. It’s keeping up with the 21st century, developing and improving. Thanks to new technology, the process of creating modern jewellery has pushed the boundaries of the traditional, leading to an aesthetic transformation. Precious metals and gemstones have started to appear more and more often in compositions that include man-made materials: carbon (Adler) and titanium fibres (BOGHART), ceramics (Chanel and Chaumet) and nanoceramics (de Grisogono). Adler offers its clients the Eclipse collection which includes elements of carbon that are reminiscent of the moon shining. This ash grey material is made up of microscopic, interweaving carbon fibres, thanks to which the silky surface of the decorative components of the Eclipse pieces have a pleasant silvery sheen. It wonderfully brings out the colourless diamonds, whilst the white and pink gold glistens against its black background even more convincingly. The other advantage of carbon fibre is that its smooth texture, unlike any other, is surprisingly sturdy and highly resistant to scratches or blemishes. A milder colour contrast can be seen in the work of BOGH-ART in its collection which uses titanium fibres. This includes butterflies, dragonflies and flowers, whose wings and petals are cut from a layer of titanium fibre created using a unique method of compacting ultrafine titanium “threads” with optical fibre at a designated temperature and pressure. Glistening with a steely sparkle, this unusually light material has an enthralling visual effect of flickering twinkles that dazzle on an ordinary-looking mount. offer the ideal combination of jewellery traditions from the past mixed with the technology of the future. Ceramics can also be used in conjunction with the latest technological advances. This strong, resistant material is perfectly suited to jewellery art. Jewellery pieces with ceramic components have become increasingly popular since Chanel released its famous J12 watch in 2000 and later an entire line. In 2013, the French maison Chaumet also released its first ceramic rings and pendants as part of its landmark Liens collection. At the same time, the French brand de Grisogono presented its Mistero collection, built on the contrast of a synthetic resin material that covered the metals and bright gemstones. Gruosi dubbed this material “nanoceramic” due to its particular chemical composition of water, butanol and methoxypropanol. Ceramics and nanoceramics are difficult to blemish which is quite a big plus if you plan on wearing them every day. Other than the materials discussed above, a few brands have found that the application of solidified volcanic lava looks very effective when coupled with gold. The 88

David Yurman has also created a large necklace that includes hardened debris from a volcanic eruption whilst Arun Bohra at Arunashi is working on developing a volcanic rock form of basalt, pulverising and reworking it using a special process of adding colouring agent to get a completely unusual material: a fine, extremely light deposit which has a very particular colour. Those who have yet to see any of the pieces that use these innovative materials described here are probably asking themselves how they can and what they cost. These creations can be categorised as being a part of modern fashion (unless, of course, they include a 2 carat diamond like the BOGH-ART ring) because they are completely different from a traditional gold and gemstone design. The views of people today on beauty have changed; the desire to follow fashion trends but to stand out from the crowd has grown. So as not to fall behind and allow everyone to express their individuality, jewellery brands are creating work which has a value that is not so much material as it is aesthetic.

he Chameleon Diamond - A Mystery of Nature

What is a chameleon diamond? Many people have never heard of it, let alone held one in their hands, such is its rarity. However, if you were to ask a collector, gemmologist or a trader of precious stones, they would all tell you that the chameleon diamond got its name owing to its unique trait of changing colour in hot conditions or when kept for a prolonged period in a dark place. So what does this exotic stone look like? If it has not been exposed to anything or been processed at all, then its colour is usually olive or a grey yellowish green. When heated to 120-150 degrees, the olive tint of the diamond, within a matter of seconds, turns into a rich cinnamon or, in some cases, an orangey yellow. The change of colour is visible to the naked eye, but practice has shown that this unusual characteristic is short-lived. This is especially the case if a chameleon diamond that has changed colour is then observed in the dark: within 10 minutes it regains its usual olive tint. Incidentally, not all these diamonds change colour from a dark hue to a light one. The so-called ‘reverse shift’ also exists, from yellow to olive. These stones are even rarer, so your typical chameleon is olive coloured. Amongst other green diamonds, it sometimes hides this unusual quality, masquerading as an ordinary green diamond. recorded at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), jewellers and diamond traders could have taken these “chameleons” to be mere green diamonds. In order to determine accurately whether a diamond can change colour, a laboratory experiment is required. This can be done at the GIA, where the approach to testing green diamonds is especially meticulous (if a tested green diamond is not a chameleon then, under a heat that exceeds 140 degrees, its hue can be changed permanently). You are probably already wondering what this “twofaced” stone can cost. Like all rare diamonds, the essential factor that determines price is size, as well as the tone and depth of colour. The trouble is chameleon diamonds are so rare that to value them properly is quite difficult. Sales at auction currently serve as the best indication of their value. For instance, in November 2011 a chameleon diamond ring (8.8 carats) was sold by Christie’s in Hong Kong for $590,000. No one has managed to explain this phenomenon yet. Even the specialists at the GIA, who have run multiple simultaneous tests on 39 chameleon diamonds, cannot reach a unanimous opinion: some think the change of colour is due a hydrogen impurity in the stone’s chemical composition; others believe that it has luminescent and phosphorescent properties. Of course, anything that cannot be explained is the subject of significant interest. That is why the specialists are continuing their investigative work in the hope of solving this mystery of nature.

Every noble youth that lived in Russia would have undoubtedly known how to use a sword, a spear, their fists, their trusty steed, even the Big Bad Wolf, as well as the bow and arrow. Today these have been replaced by fencing, boxing, wrestling, racing and dressage. They used these skills not only to survive or to protect themselves from their enemies, domestic or otherwise, but also for their own amusement. It was relaxing to go out in the morning into an open field and test one’s strength: to fire some arrows or to bludgeon a monster’s head. If your mighty horse appeared, then, in a square full of spectators, you could leap onto a third floor balcony, steal a kiss from the sweet lips of the nation’s most celebrated damsel and as a reward for your bravery receive half a kingdom and a maiden as your prize. If the heroes of mythology and folklore could look at a dictionary, they would realise that they were essentially playing sport because they word “sport” comes from the old English verb “to disport” meaning to have fun or lark about. So sportsmen are those who “repeatedly perform complex physical activities, develop and strengthen their bodies and improve by achieving high results in competitions”. It can be a means of improving one’s health, body and soul; it can act as a wonderful teacher, building one’s character, improving endurance, stamina, determination, the will to win; it can teach you to overcome fears, doubts, difficulties and failure. Sport is one of the best ways to organise leisure time. Momentum and audience appeal are intrinsic. It is a sophisticated form of politics and scheming. It plays on our gambling habits, on our nerves and weaknesses and on our vanity. It has taken illicit substances, drugs and bribes. It is harsh and ruthless. It has recruited both children and animals: bears, foxes, pandas... Sport successfully handles business and self-promotion. It is an excellent designer and stylist. It has dressed the world in trainers and sports clothes. It has helped to fashion careers and strengthen family ties. It is a consistent and dependable means of grabbing people’s attention, love and friendship. You will be accepted by any circle in any society if you play draughts, chess, bridge, poker, snap, petanque, billiards or beach volleyball, if you can kick a ball , pin the tail on the donkey, pick up a racket or hold a gold club. Playing sport can make finding a partner easier too. You could meet him or her on a backpacking trip, at a stadium, at the gym, in a swimming pool or even in a forest. A 58 year old friend of my mother’s, a wonderfully dexterous professor, once walked with a suitor of hers amongst the trees, telling him about the rhythmic gymnastics she did at Prechistenka house. When asked if you could do a somersault, this grandmother of two said that she could and corroborated her words with a double back-flip. Literature Being sensitive to all that goes on, art in all its guises couldn’t have missed out on sport as a subject matter: the prehistoric cave drawings of arrows and spears, the Discobolos, Michelangelo’s David, the legendary noble archers Robin Hood and William Tell, those depicted in stories about flawless horse riding, shooting and fencing musketeers and finally the 10th muse that we know as cinema of the 20th century gave the world the documentary masterpieces of Leni Riefenstahl, the French melodrama “This Sporting Life” and endless American action films with cool guys that have sports complexes. But British secret agent 007 topped them all. If it weren’t for his spying duties and attempts to save the world, there would be a James Bond who was an Olympic champion in every type of sport. Our Soviet predecessors paid honourable tributes to sport with films such as “The Goal-Keeper”, “The First Boxing Glove”, “Road Racers”, Elem Klimov’s film “Sport, Sport, Sport” and many others. Both on the screen and in life, “real men” have played hockey. People throughout the whole country would psyche themselves up, wash, smile, live happily and proudly stride to the sounds of Isaac Dunayevsky’s marching songs. Soviet art correctly and beautifully portrayed in its monuments the ideal creator of a new society. The sculptor Ivan Shadr became a worthy successor to the Greeks with his unforgettable “Woman with an Oar” which was replicated in towns and cities across our immense nation. In everyday Russia, sport attempts to conquer harsh economic realities and shine through artistic works in new lights. In order to learn how to depict it in bronze, stone, ceramics, paint or photographs, we can personally find out for ourselves from 21st October until 1st November off New Manezh Street on Georgievsky Avenue at the exhibition “Sport in Art”, presented by the Russian State Museum and the Art-Line Fund. The life-affirming works by the masters of socialist realism, such as Alexander Deyneka, Nikolai Zagrekov, Dmitry Zhilinsky, Alexander Samokhvalov and Matvey Manizer, undoubtedly call up nostalgic emotions of pride for the glorious sporting achievements of our Soviet past as well as sorrow for the loss of Russia’s supreme global leadership. The Art-Line Fund is presenting the works of fifteen famous Moscow sculptors as well as black and white photographs of six artists. 100

This year’s Goodwood Festival is fast approaching and once again Cartier will host its Style et Luxe Concours D’Elegance. Now in its ninth year, the competition pays tribute to the finest classic cars in history. Rather than being judged by experts on cars, the Concours is judged by well known personalities such as Sir Terence Conran and Yasmin Le Bon, making it a unique event in the social calendar. The shapes, textures and proportions of cars are all key factors the judges look at whilst the design and historical aspects represent the same values of Cartier’s jewellery and timepieces. Each year a theme is chosen and the cars are split into different classes. Themes have included Royal Travel in 2012 which coincided with the Diamond Jubilee as well as Pre War Era Cars and Fifties American Classic Cars to name a few. Last year’s theme was The Best Of The First Twenty Years and over 185,000 visitors headed to Goodwood to see the display. An overall prize is awarded every year and notably one of the past prize winners was the Aston Martin DB6 Volante that the Duchess and Duke of Cambridge drove away in on their wedding day. This year, the Goodwood Festival Of Speed will take place 26th - 29th June and theme is 'Addicted To Winning – The Unbeatable Champions Of Motor Sport'. This 2014 theme celebrates legendary drivers and their teams who have excelled in motor sports. This year's festival will also celebrate the centenary of Maserati. To mark the occasion, a selection of Maserati's most iconic cars will be displayed and there will be a dedicated category in the Style et Luxe competition for Maseratis. Other activities, including The Goodwood Hill Climb, are also set to make a return this year with the Hill Climb involving motor vehicles climbing up a 1.16 mile steep hill. It is also worth knowing that as well as exceptional cars, the festival also has a Motorcycle Paddock with an amazing selection of the finest motorcycles in history. As we get closer to the highly anticipated event and with so much to see and do during the festival, it is advised that visitors stay in beautiful Chichester in order to attend all three days of it. Indeed, Goodwood has now established itself as the ultimate must for any motoring enthusiast.

PLAYING POLO WITH CARTIER As spring approaches, Polo is in full swing. The tournaments have become among the most anticipated events in the sporting calendar. One of the most prestigious tournaments is the Cartier Queen’s Cup. Cartier has supported the popular sport of Polo since 1985 when the Cartier International Polo was introduced; it quickly became one of the most important events in the British calendar establishing Cartier’s importance in the world of Polo. The annual tournament is always held in Windsor at The Guards Polo Club and runs for three weeks as sixteen teams battle for the highly sought after trophy. Last year, Her Majesty The Queen was in attendance to watch the final match in which Team Zacara won 15-9 against Team El Remanso. It is traditional that the Queen attends the final match of the cup every year which is often followed by a private lunch in the Cartier enclosure. Last year’s tournament attracted Thandie Newton, Sharon Stone and Princess Beatrice amongst other guests of honour. English high society has been attracted to the sport for years and polo tournaments are now honoured dates in London’s social calendar. HM The Queen has also been a loyal supporter of the sport for years and first presented the trophy in 1960. Since then she has watched Prince Philip play in the final and even had the great pleasure to watch His Royal Highness Prince Charles play the final and win the cup in 1986.

The Boodles has become an absolute must for London's social scene in the run-up to Wimbledon. The V V team met with the tournament's founder Patricio Apey and gained an insight into the history and excitement surrounding The Boodles.

V V: Why did you choose to partner with a brand like Boodles? P.A.: It just so happened that Boodles was looking for something to invite their clients to that didn’t need to be a boutique event. Tennis fits well with their clientele and jewellery fits well with tennis. Someone introduced us and one meeting later we made an agreement that has lasted 12 years and will hopefully last for many more years. V V: What do you normally wear to the tournament? P.A.: It is a relaxed atmosphere so there’s usually no need for a tie. Most of the time it is a “smart casual” affair and the eternal optimist in me makes sure I always have a pair of sunglasses nearby! V V: Why did you decide to do the tournament so close to Wimbledon? P.A.: The proximity to Wimbledon on the calendar was the main reason to do it. Our mission was to allow the top players to have a relaxing week without any pressures in the luxury of Stoke Park and the excellent grass courts while they all fine tune their games for the most important tennis tournament in the world. V V: How do you feel Stoke Park suits the tournament as a location? P.A.: When we set out to establish this event, we looked at many different locations including other clubs in and around

Wimbledon and some private homes that had beautiful settings, but the combination of everything that Stoke Park has, together with the excellent luxury sponsors that we have managed to associate with The Boodles, there could not be a better place than Stoke Park. V V: What was your highlight of last year's Tournament? P.A.: In 2013, it has to have been the incredibly entertaining match between Novak Djokovic and Grigor Dimitrov. They played a match and when one changed their shirt, there was some whistling and encouragement from the sold-out crowd and suddenly we had a semi strip-tease competition between the two players. They then imitated Maria Sharapova and the crowd gave them a standing ovation. It was all in good fun and something you would not normally see at an ATP event, but the relaxed atmosphere of The Boodles gives the players the opportunity to show their personalities which is great for them, great for the crowd, and great for the sport. V V: What has been your greatest sporting achievement? P.A.: I did play junior tennis and managed to compete in the Junior French Open. I also represented Chile in a Junior Davis Cup team, but nothing more than that. V V: Do you have a perfect drink whilst watching a match during The Boodles? P.A.: The summer social season in England can only be fully appreciated with a nice glass of Veuve Clicquot.
