had a very interesting year thus far, which included our V V special awards evening we had at The Café Royal Hotel. I hope all of our guests enjoyed the evening, which can be seen on Fashion TV/YouTube. Congratulations again to our 2014 finalists… in particular to the Cafe Royal, who with their innovative design and total make over have produced something quite delectable in each of their rooms, so well done to them. Also I would like to congratulate, Consero, Nomad Aviation and David Duggan Watches. My pleasure last year was an intimate dinner at Buckingham Palace with the Countess of Wessex, Sophie is a fabulous patron for the DEBRA Сharity and many more! The last Royal engagement in October, was dinner at Kensington Palace. It is always a wonderful experience and very delicious. Our gentleman readers should be delighted with our new pages, dedicated to men’s skin care and beauty products. Not only the beautiful ladies wish to take care of themselves in this day and age spa’s are now as attractive for men as they are for women. We hope you enjoy this new edition of V V.

Harrods

Harrods will be expanding its unparalleled world of luxury by adding some exciting new departments to the Knightsbridge store: Shoe Heaven and The Salon De Parfum. The first development is Shoe Heaven, a shoe lover's dream in itself with a space that will cover almost 42,000 square feet of the fifth floor and carry an impressive collection by more than fifty of the world's most coveted designers. This Mecca has been designed by the late David Collins and features seventeen boutiques from the likes of Christian Louboutin, Chanel and Louis Vuitton. Plush surroundings such as velvet banquet seating, private shopping suites and beautifully desinged displays will lend opulence to Shoe Heaven and take the experience of buying shoes to a whole new level. To celebrate the launch, Harrods has announced a limited edition collection showcasing some of today's most iconic shoes in silver exclusive to Harrods. Pieces in the collection include Manolo Blahnik's Silver Brooch-adorned Ariona Mule and metallic Rockstuds by Valentino. Fashion Director of Harrods Helen David says that “from stilettos to sneakers, Harrods Shoe Heaven will be home to all the best shoes from the world's leading and need-to-know designers. The space will be less shoe floor and more Penthouse, creating a luxurious and sophisticated environment.” Another notable development in the Harrods portfolio is the soon to be opened Salons De Parfums, an intoxicating new concept for connoisseurs of fine fragrance. The extensive space will occupy 5,090 square feet of the sixth floor and will play host to eleven dedicated brand boutiques from the finest fragrance houses in the world. An array of perfumers such as Clive Christian, Roja Dove and By Kilian will present their 8

latest collections in the salons alongside a host of exclusives and débuts. A palette of warm neutral tones and soft greys combined with decorative lighting and embellishments will give the interior a more intimate feel. The salon will also offer bespoke perfume creations. A separate gallery will also carry a selection of scents aimed at discerning perfume buyers enticed by the likes of The Bond NO.9 and Velvet Collection by Dolce & Gabbana.

Clarins Celebrates 60 Years

his year marks the 60th Anniversary of the triumphed beauty house, Clarins. Originally established in 1954, the story began when the brand's founder Jacques Courtin-Clarins developed a massage oil for his beauty institute. The oil had slimming benefits which enhanced his firming massages and soon client demand led him to commercialize the products marking the birth of Clarins. For generations the group has continued to remain at the helm of the Clarins family and is currently headed by Jacques' two sons, Christian and Oliver. The ever expanding portfolio of the company currently consists of all the Clarins and My Blend brands as well as the spa activities. Some of the recent spa openings have included the Clarins Spa in Paris' Molitor and the extremely popular My Blend Spa on the Maldives' Velaa Private Island. Two of the most anticipated upcoming projects due to open soon are the spas at The San Regis Hotel in Florence and the Royal Palm in Marrakech. Kandinsky had one of the most creative minds of the 20th century. As well as being an influential painter and artist in the conventional sense, he was also an art theorist who wrote several books outlining his artistic principals as well as a composer of music. A less well known fact is that between 1903 and 1904 he drew several jewellery designs, never realised in his lifetime, which remained undiscovered among archives and his works of art for over 50 years. Kandinsky started his artistic career rather late in life: born in 1866, it was only in 1896 that he decided to pursue art as a career. A few years later in 1902, after moving to Germany from Moscow, Kandinsky met Gabrielle Münter for the first

time and despite marrying his cousin Anna Chimyakina in 1892 the two artists began a long term relationship. In 1911 the Blue Rider Group was formed by Kandinsky and Franz Marc (named after Marc’s love for horses and Kandinsky’s love of riding coupled with their shared passion for the colour blue). Over the course of its existence, the group included several members of the artistic elite. On the 19th February 1957, Gabrielle Münter began the final chapter of an incredible journey by donating her entire collection of works by the Blue Rider Group to the Lenbachhaus Musuem in Munich. This single donation, on the occasion of her 80th birthday, catapulted the museum from something of a provincial establishment to one of international repute as a central venue for classical modernism. The Museum’s director at that time, Hans Konrad Roëthel, was to become a world authority on Kandinsky and provided the initial momentum for the creation of this jewellery collection. Remarkably, Münter managed to safeguard a large collection of works by the group at her home in Murnau. This was done at great personal risk since the Nazis ran a campaign to destroy what they deemed ‘degenerate art’ from the mid1930s onwards. The Lenbachaus lost many important works to this campaign. This collection of jewellery was created by Max Pollinger and Cornelia Roëthel (Hans Konrad’s daughter) in 1969. Half of the jewellery in the collection is based on the original designs by Kandinsky from 1903/1904 that were found among the works donated to the Lenbachaus; the second half of the collection in based upon art works by Kandinsky from the 1930s. Originally exhibited in New York, Paris and Munich, the collection comprised a limited edition of up to 20 pieces per design. However, in reality, no more than six were produced per design and in some cases, such as Umgebung, only one piece was ever made. Мало кто знает, что в период с 1903 по 1904 год он создал несколько эскизов ювелирных украшений, которые были обнаружены в архивах художника спустя более 50-ти лет после его смерти. Свою художественную карьеру Кандинский начал довольно поздно: лишь в 1896 году, в возрасте зо лет, он решил посвятить себя искусству. В 1902 году, спустя несколько лет после переезда из Москвы в Германию, Кандинский знакомится с Габриэлой Мюнтер, которая на долгие годы становится спутницей его жизни (несмотря на то, что он с 1892 года был женат на своей кузине Анне Чемякиной).

Horst As you peruse Horst’s work, you feel as if you’re part of the scene he’s photographed. All of his images breathe with life. Indeed, the lighting in Horst's work looks as if it’s bouncing off the walls whilst the majestic decor of the V&A will take you on a personal journey surrounded with stones by Trabert and Hoeffer-Mauboussin. The modern C-type prints reproduced for the exhibition boast colours that have to be seen to be believed. There are an incredible 90+ Vogue covers by Horst as well as a framed image of the super stylish Carmen Dell'Orefice first modelling for Horst in 1946. Surreally enough, Carmen agreed to appear in front of her original photograph at the V&A in September 2014 as if she had simply stepped out of the frame: “Horst understood how light falls on an object. He saw me as a living sculpture to be projected through his photographs.” 1930s surrealism and spot-lighting are just two examples of the trends captured by Horst throughout his life. Another example is 'Hands,Hands,Hands', an image of five hands descending with painted nails – 1939, which marked the year coloured nail polish made its debut. Other delights include the Haute Couture Platform displaying 1930s Luxe and Chanel's delicate tulle lace dress, mantilla and belt (1937). One of Horst's favourite models, Lisa Fonssagrives, seen in a gelatin silver print illustrating the play of light and shadow was first 18

published by US Vogue on 1 November 1940. There is true skill in the adjustment of his gelatin silver prints; it’s fascinating to see his hand-written 'ink annotations.’ However, his image of the iconic Mainbocher pink satin back laced corset by Detolle - worn by Madame Bernon and created by Horst for Vogue in 1939 - was not adjusted; he preferred the original version. Other highlights include images that are similar to black and white movie stills of Princess Natalia Pavlovna Paley (1934), the daughter of Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovich of Russia who emigrated to France after the revolution, and Irina Boronova (1944), who appears as part of the 'Baby Ballerinas - the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo’. Horst’s travels during the summer of 1949 to the Middle East, meanwhile, lead to solid images of 'folded columns' that could just as easily have been made of silk as of stone. See if you can find the cigarette lighter made between 1930 and 1940 by Coco Chanel whilst she was fashioning theatre props out of putty in her Paris apartment. Horst famously picked up a piece of putty, moulded it as they chatted and when they met again, Chanel gave Horst a precise replica of the putty in silver and metal. Obviously money being no object, the gentleman was only concerned about having as much of the exquisite designs as possible. If I were a man I would also have found it very hard to resist such temptations. From the décor and delicious looking items placed prestigiously on shelves and hanging sublimely perfect in the most wonderfully bespoke wardrobes, invites you and demands that you want to touch, feel, stroke to believe it warrants such high praise. Ezio Riva who is renown for his designs for prestigious fashion houses, Spas and home interiors in Italy, was a perfect marriage for OTTO’s designs, he understood the impeccable taste and has provided the most understated glamour exuding enormous depth of richness offering a very calming, pleasing and harmonious impact to the eye throughout the 4,000 sq ft. The program, which has been launched by Maranello, is a continuation of a longstanding tradition from the 50s and 60s when clients personalised their cars as a matter of course, choosing the materials, colours and finish. Taking inspiration from this tradition is Ferrari Tailor-Made, the new service that gives clients the option to specify every aspect of their new car from the exterior to the cabin trim. Ferrari's Styling Centre has produced an unprecedented choice of accessories, colours and fabrics to accompany the bespoke service, all of which reflect the company's core values of innovation and elegance. Owners are guided through the process of personalisation by their own Personal Designer who helps ensure the end result is both unique and true to the heritage of the brand. From this point on, the client is able to track the creation of their car right up to taking delivery. Owners are also encouraged to collect their cars in person from Maranello itself. We succeeded in finding all of this in the Swiss town of Gstaad. Trains run from Geneva and Zurich airports to Gstaad. Tickets are best purchased through Swiss Travel System. The splendid train carriages of first class and business class are designed in either a modern or retro style reminiscent of the famous “Orient Express”. The two and a half hour journey is complemented by flawless service and incredible views of the Swiss countryside. Leonard’s has an enviable wine cellar containing over 9,000 bottles of fine wines from across the world. We dedicated the next day to acquainting ourselves with Gstaad. This little town is energetic and full of life: a variety of cultural and sport events are held here, including the Menuhin Classical Music Festival, the International Aeronautical Festival and the international Hublot Polo Gold Cup tournament. To finish the day off, we decide to go to the hotel’s spa centre which dazzled us with its grandeur. Its 2,500 m2 of space includes an indoor pool, a jacuzzi bath, a bio-sauna and a Turkish steam bath in addition to a laconium, a Himalayan salt room, an aromatherapy room and an ice grotto. We definitely recommend the Herbal Poultice, the centre’s signature massage performed with warm organic oils. In the evening, you can dine at the cosy Le Petit Chalet, where you will find traditional local dishes, or simply have a cup of tea with a freshly baked pastry. If you’ve got the strength and the desire, then you can pay a visit to the night club which is situated here, right in the grounds of the hotel itself. Is it worth mentioning that on the last day, when the vintage Bentley arrived to collect us from this oasis of pleasure and peace, the very last thing we wanted to do was leave Le Grand

The first thing I felt as I disembarked the airplane at the airport in Sitka, Alaska was a blizzard. I instantly wanted to know when the next flight to Hawaii was… At that moment, it seemed I hadn’t chosen the best season in which to visit Alaska. Thankfully that wasn’t the case and the thought that I’d soon be strolling along a beach in Hawaii soothed me. At the end of March, Alaska is blessed with its first flowers: snowdrops and crocuses. Whilst flowers are blooming in the towns, hinting at the start of spring, the mountains are still thickly covered with soft snow. Long walks to the mountain lakes, to the waterfalls and, of course, finding a chance to go out onto the open sea in a boat where you can watch the humpbacked whales and sea lions are all amongst

Мне сразу захотелось выяснить, когда ближайший рейс на Гавайи… В тот момент казалось, что я выбрала не самый подходящий сезон для посещения Аляски, но, к счастью, это было не так. Да и мысль о том, что скоро я буду бродить вдоль линии прибоя на Гавайских островах, согревала. Чем хороша Аляска в конце марта, так это цветением первых подснежников и крокусов. Они распускаются в городах, напоминая о наступлении весны, но в горах еще лежит пушистый снег. Стоит уделить время пешим прогулкам к горным озерам и водопадам и, конечно, найти возможность выйти на катере в открытое море и понаблюдать за горбатыми китами и морскими львами. Энергия этого места наполняет душу силой, на которую способна только природа. Ситка (в прошлом – Новоархангельск) имеет русскую историю, музеи города по сей день хранят память об этом. Есть здесь и русский православный собор Святого Михаила.

Sitka (formerly known as Novoarkhangelsk) has a Russian history and the town’s museums continue to remember this. There’s even a Russian Orthodox church: the Cathedral of St. Mikhail. For souvenirs, you can go to the Sitka Rose Gallery where the work of Alaska’s finest artists is displayed. The gallery’s owner is Russian writer and creative Evgeny Soloviev.

There’s one terrific tradition that can’t go unmentioned: when one of the locals comes back from a long journey, he/she readily prepares a photo diary and then hosts a slideshow at the town library which anyone can come to and hear about the trip. The event is also aired on local television. I was particularly struck by an old man’s story of his trip through Laos, Thailand and Cambodia on a bicycle. Each day in Alaska was so full of interesting events and meetings that thoughts of Hawaii never once entered my head. But a week later, one frosty sunny morning, I bid farewell to wonderful Alaska and by the second half of the day I had a Hawaiian lei (a garland of tropical flowers) around my neck. I only spent a bit of time in Honolulu on O‘ahu island; when you live in a city, you just want to escape the bustle and emotional whirlpools that make up a megapolis so I hurriedly flew to Kaua‘i, an emerald island with an adorable law that says you can’t build a house higher than a palm tree. This is where you can have a truly terrific holiday: visit the Waimea Canyon, no less awe-inspiring than Arizona’s Grand Canyon; fly in a helicopter without any doors over the island and enjoy the views; sail around the island in a yacht from Kalalau Beach; spend the evening watching an enchanting Hula dance. Your stay on the island will be complemented by endless outstanding rainbows, and what’s more several all at once. It’s a shame you can’t experience all four seasons in one visit but experiencing three is very possible: a snowy winter in Alaska’s mountains, an early spring in bloom on the shores of Sitka and a tropical summer in Hawaii. Such a contrast would excite even the most profound cynic; those of a more enthusiastic, positive, captivated disposition would undoubtedly remember it forever. В Гонолулу, на острове O’ahu, я провела совсем немного времени: когда живешь в большом городе, хочется сбежать от суеты и эмоциональных водоворотов, которые создают мегаполисы, поэтому, не задерживаясь, я улетела на Kaua’i, изумрудный остров с милым законом не строить дома выше пальмы. Здесь можно прекрасно провести отпуск: посетить Waimea Canyon, не уступающий по красоте аризонскому Гранд-Каньону, полетать на вертолете без дверей над островом и насладиться его прекрасными видами, обойти остров на яхте со стороны Kalalau Beach. И провести вечер, любуясь завораживающими танцами Hula. Все пребывание на острове будет сопровождаться бесконечными изумительными радугами, причем несколькими одновременно. Жаль, что за одну поездку нельзя совместить все четыре сезона, но три вполне возможно: снежную зиму в горах Аляски, раннюю цветущую весну у берегов Ситки и тропическое лето на Гавайях. To get away the madding crowd of the city and into the spirit of the serene Cambodians (or Khmers as they call themselves), we went to the islands of Koh Ouen and Koh Bong where we found the Song Saa resort. The islands can be reached by helicopter or by boat; it’s a wonderful little sail across the ocean on a comfortable ferry. The hotel runs 27 villas that are a considerable distance from each other giving the guests a real sense of a personal paradise. You can choose a villa on the water with an ocean view or one right in the heart of the jungle. The villas’ interiors and architecture organically blend into the environment of the island as if they miraculously and naturally evolved there along with the forests, ocean and fresh breeze. Whichever villa takes your fancy, you won’t be disappointed! The luxurious interiors and panoramic views from the windows every morning will remind you that you really are living in bliss. We especially liked the truly regal bathtubs which the conscientious members of staff sprinkle with lotus petals. After just an hour on the white sand beach, which was only a three minute walk from the villa, you’ve already forgotten about where your phone is or any problems that might have arisen at home in your absence; it’s only the here and the now that’s important.

Over the days that followed, we enjoyed the view from the restaurant Vista that sits high on pole sticks in the sea. There’s also a bar of the same name where they make amazing cocktails. For breakfast, we were spoiled with fresh smoothies and blueberry pancakes. What could be better? One evening, we dined right on the beach under torchlight. As well as the delicious local dishes made from freshly caught fish and seafood, meat delicacies and juicy fruits, we indulged in deserts, especially the coconut and mango panna cotta.

The owners of Song Saa have created a charity that supports the development of local fishing communities. The Prince of Monaco is an illustrious trustee of the organisation. You can visit the nearby villages and school and talk to the friendly locals. The charity’s work is aimed at preserving the environment whilst also improving the state of the village by working out an efficient waste disposal system, educating the locals in farming and the developing silk trade and supporting schools (except for the graduate school where grants are already offered). Patrols are also run to protect the islands’ underwater habitats. Our gallant driver met us at the airport and took us to the Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor that we’d chosen by total chance. This is the very place presidents and film stars have stayed in the past to see the famous temples. Opened in 1932, the hotel was built in the traditional colonial style and is situated right opposite one of the Cambodian King’s residences. The perfectly restored interiors and furniture make you feel like Indiana Jones himself with a bit of modern technology at your disposal: high speed internet and light control panels. The pride of Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor is the spa complex and Cambodia’s largest swimming pool inspired by the swimming pools built for the Khmer kings.

Cuisine

Every dinner at the Apsara terrace is accompanied by some kind of theatrical performer (something which Cambodian monarchs have enjoyed for centuries). Khmer cooking here is heavily adapted to suit travellers’ tastes but the local colours are still very much evident. For example, instead of giving you traditional potato chips to have with your beer, you are offered banana chips and you absolutely have to try the barracuda Amok (Cambodian curry). If you want to impress a fellow traveller, then Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor can organise a romantic dinner for the two of you under the stars on the hotel’s roof or in one of the ancient temples, some of which conceal the entire world of an ancient kingdom.

unforgettable excursion. With our guide, we went to the first temple at daybreak. Against the background of the dawn, the dark towers of Angkor Wat looked particularly impressive. The hesitant morning light illuminated the reflectiondappled walls of the main tower, every centimetre of which is concealing the secrets and wisdom of ancient Cambodians. Inside the temple you can make a wish (our guide assured us that it would be sure to come true), receive a prophecy from a monk who binds your hands with a red ribbon. On leaving the temple, you definitely feel relaxed and confident that everything will be absolutely magnificent. Happy and elated, we went on to the next temple: Angkor Thom. It is here that Kipling decided to place the city of the Bandar-logs in The Jungle Book. And of course we then saw Ta Prohm where Lara Croft was filmed. To get inside this unbelievable temple, where the roots of trees have literally fused with the building’s structures, we were lead through a side entrance where there were no tourists at all and restoration work still hadn’t been done. Unfortunately, dusk was near and it was time to go back. As well as the temples at Siem Reap, you can also visit the workshops where they make unbelievable objects from silk and wood as well as ceramic paintings and natural make-up. Those who love an Eastern colour palette will get a real kick out of buying souvenirs and the production of art in the Old Market in Siem Reap’s centre. After filling our suitcases with several stunning silk pieces made by Cambodian weavers, we went on to our third and, alas, last point of call: Camodia’s capital Phnom Penh. www.raffles.com/siem-reap

The Business: Raffles Le Royal Place

Once again, we chose a hotel from the Raffles chain: Hotel Le Royal, built in 1929 and recently renovated. Its architecture organically merges elements of Khmer culture, art deco and French colonial style. Inside, like an enchanting box of jewels, is filled with pieces of Cambodian art and elegant furniture. The hotel is set right in the city centre not far from the royal palace. The building is surrounded by a lovely tropical garden that makes guests feel like they’re in a mysteriously deserted city. The hotel offers its guests two gorgeous swimming pools, a spa centre and butler service. The hotel just as perfect for relaxing as it is for business talks and formal meetings.

Cuisine

The evening is best begun at Elephant bar with a Femme Fatale cocktail, originally mixed for Jackie Kennedy in 1967 and made with cognac and champagne. The very glass she drank from has been kept for display along with other antique objects. You simply have to go for dinner at Le Royal’s restaurant where French and Khmer cuisine is on offer. The head chef truly deserves his Michelin star for the stunning taste of his dishes: the tender morsels of fois gras that melt in your mouth, the succulent fish with lemongrass and of course the flambé for desert. The hotel also has the Monivong café, where lunch and dinner are served in an unpretentious style, the Le Phnom Terrace café, where freshly baked pastries can be sampled, and also the Conservatory bar and Writers Bar.

once shared this idea with a friend of mine: an exhibition called “Mysteries of the Russian Soul”. She asked: “And the explanations for these mysteries would be…?” The question made me think not so much about the explanations as the mysteries themselves. Are there any? What about those globally recognized stereotypes, like the politeness of the Japanese, the industry of the Chinese, the swagger of the Americans, the diligence of the Germans or the charm of the French? Surely every human soul is ultimately mysterious, or so the saying goes: another man’s mind is a closed book. Why have the Russians laid claim to this distinction, one which has caused endless discussions, especially amongst those who allegedly bear and possess it? Of course, this interest in our intangible spiritual substance has been kindled since the 19th century by the works of three great world renowned authors: Tolstoy, Dostoevsky and Chekhov. These three writers did not simply peer into the Russian soul; they consciously dug deep into it, inspected every nook and cranny, and studied even its smallest movements, its motives, impulses, failings and means of catharsis. They had no fear of falling into the terrifying abysses of this soul or clambering up to its heights. If the results of their investigations were not always favour90

able, there was always something to think about at least. But even before Lev Nikolaevich, Fydor Mikhailovich and Anton Pavlovich there were literarily gifted people fascinated by the Russian soul who deftly described their inner journeys. Their names are either unknown or they didn’t say anything of their thoughts to the wider public but their work has reached us in a streamlined, abridged form given to them by a richly deserved editing team of academics and literary experts. These unknowns were the extraordinary tellers of Russian folk tales. Without any analysis, they identified, pinned down, noted, remembered and retold those who wished to hear them their stories, histories, fables, anecdotes and witticisms about a man, a nobleman, a war chief, a tsar, a bonny lass, the bogey man and every other kind of evil, garnishing their story telling with harsh words and details that linked their tales to local, contemporaneous events. From their composition emerged an interesting cumulative image of the Russian protagonist, a sort of picture puzzle. On the one hand, he’s lazy, stupid and plain, but quite crafty and a canny tyke (e.g. Ivan the Fool). Somewhere along the line he’s also not terribly clever, simple, piteous, tender-hearted and kind (e.g. Ivan the Prince). Finally, he’s the protector of the motherland, of the weak, the oppressed and the wretched, a stalwart saviour and powerful benefactor (e.g. Ilya of Murom). Those are the male types. The female characters include the honest, good, conscientious,

Где-то посередке расположился не особенно умный, простодушный, жалостливый, отзывчивый и незлобивый Иван-царевич и, наконец, защитник Руси, а также слабых, угнетенных, обездоленных, храбрец-удалец, могучий богатырь типа Ильи Муромца. Это мужской вариант. И совсем другое дело – разобраться с врагами отечества, совершить ратный подвиг или прикончить всеядного Змея Горыныча.

Like all of us in life, these folk tale heroes and heroines are confronted with problems, from the simplest of obstacles that are fundamentally mundane in comparison to the large scale global issues that can affect an entire country. For example, trying to escape from an oven, to fetch water for a cauldron, to carry out some other cumbersome household chore; to keep watch at night to find out who is trampling on papa’s wheat crop in the fields; to seek out the perfect bride; to satisfy the whim of an older member of the family or high-ranking officer. But then it’s a completely different matter dealing with public enemies, achieving military feats or smiting the omnivorous Slavic dragon Zmey Gorynych. So then, when a problem arises, a solution needs to be found. But how? The search for the way and the means begins and 92

entails a choice: do you release the fish or eat it for lunch? Do you marry the frog or decide to accept that you’ve lost your arrow and remain a bachelor? It’s all the more difficult to choose an answer when three options present themselves. The hero stands at the crossroads by the road signs that say the following: “He who goes straight ahead will be cold and hungry the whole way”; “He who goes right will survive but his steed will perish”; “He who goes left will perish but his steed will survive”. Of course, it’s an unpleasant task having to make the choice but at least it’s a choice which clearly warns you about the dangers that lie ahead. In other situations you might stumble upon another sign, one that cunningly leads you into a trap of empty promises. The heroes of folk tales try to extract wealth by going left or win the perfect marriage by staying their course. Little does the wayfarer know that the money is hidden under 300 puds (1 pud is equal to 16 kilograms) which he’ll never be able to lift whilst a beguiling regal beauty casts trusting suitors deep into the earth (she is in fact a double agent sent by the enemy to destroy the youth of Russia’s ruling elite and thereby ease the battle of the foreigners that fight against mother Russia). Incidentally, the fateful depths are littered with skulls and bones of indeterminate bodies as a warning to the living: make a choice and at least you won’t lose that chance. Finally, the hero comes to his senses, makes a decision and, consequently (since he’s taking a risk anyway and it might as well be a big risk) takes responsibility for all his actions - that’s the really courageous thing to do, both in life and in fairy tales. Before he confronts these trials, a hero needs to determine what support he has. As a matter of course, either animals come to his aid (the Little Humpbacked Horse, the magical horse Sivka-Burka, the magical pike, the Golden Fish - tsarina of the seas, the spotted cow, etc.) or mystical beings with advice (an old man from who knows where, Baba Yaga and her sisters). And so, after fervently praying to God, our hero sets out on his journey. An unforeseen development of events on the road to one’s goals really brings out the true qualities of the Russian soul, qualities whose wealth and variety can cause confusion for foreigners and poorly informed fellow countrymen because a explosive mixture of blind belief in luck, spunk, inconsistency, goodness, compassion, helplessness, cunning, naivety, restlessness, faith, patience, physical strength, and a struggle for justice, happiness and wealth. What’s more, there’s an evident lack of foresight and common sense, but above all there are no efforts made to work on one’s

The disobedient nincompoop of course takes the bridge and a stream of unpleasant experiences ensues, and so on and so forth... By the end there’s nothing left, including his own head. It’s a good thing that in both fairy tales and real life the fools are lucky enough to come across some wise Grey Wolves along the way. But how do all these folk tales relate to the mysteries of the Russian soul? In the most direct way possible it seems: a tale is not a lie, within it lies a hint, a lesson to be learnt. It’s simple and accessible. Bypassing Dostoevsky’s existentialism, Chekhov’s microscope and Tolstoy’s quests and edification, folk tales have sculpted a portrait of the Russian man and exposed his soul. Ко всему прочему, сказка – это в чистом виде мечта о простом человеческом счастье, она нам строить и жить помогает. On top of that, the fairy tale in its pure form is a dream about simple human happiness that helps us to strive and to survive. It has only one serious flaw: it is quick to tell but slow to be realised with happiness in some cases taking an entire lifetime to find. Along the way, from time to time, each of us will come across a sign, a warning of imminent challenges, the first of which is a choice. Little Humpbacked Horse, ah-oo! Where are you? He-e-elp!... As we await the helpful advice of a friend that can help to lighten the burden of responsibility, we continue to live our ordinary lives: we eat, we drink, we work, we sleep. At night, we dream of things hidden in our subconscious, we penetrate that parallel reality within our lives. We are not in control of ourselves there, we cannot restrain or repress anything; we can dream whatever we like. Say what you dreamt and Doctor Freud will explain what’s going on. The explanations scare us. Waking up at an unearthly hour, we start to delve into the past. Insomnia sets in and gradually makes a lasting effect on our lives. Depending on our temperament, we stroll, run, gallop, confidently walk along the road of the everyday or sail down the same river. Inevitably, we stumble upon those signs that sug-

Literature gest we should suddenly change course. Only a few get close to finding an answer: some are scared of change, others don’t want to take the responsibility, some want to but are in two minds about it, and others simply can’t see that fate is giving them a sign. What unites us all is the dream of happiness, but each of us understands it differently. Everyone wants to be happy but not everyone has read Kozma Prutkov, and so not everyone is aware of that wise saying: “If you want to be happy, be so”. This motto is a wonderful call to take action. It’s brilliant as a psychotherapeutic exercise, it’s positive, and we can apply it to our sign at the roadside in order to understand the soul through representational art: To the left, the dream visions of a person who has decided to be happy; To the right, a place to work on the faults of someone who has decided to be happy; Straight ahead, an instant between the past and the future when someone could be genuinely happy. Our heroes are static but they are only static in the directly literal sense of the word. They don’t physically move like visitors in a museum. If you look at them more carefully, then you’ll see that they are in fact scrutinising you. Their behaviour is restrained; unlike us, they don’t tell you what they think to your face. Each of them, like each of us, has a history, holds a secret, has their own mystery. They are visual characters made of creative energy and they are here, in our world to help us work things out and see things from another angle. They have already made their choice. The ball is now in our court. Can we find the strength within ourselves not only to want but to get what we wish for: the briefest moment of happiness? Think for yourselves, make a decision to be or not to be... happy... Through one’s perception of happiness, on the route and via the means to its attainment, the characteristics of the Russian mindset manifest themselves, engendering the legend of its mysteriousness or, more probably, the mystical unpredictability of the Russian soul.

Summer 2014 was marked by the customary swanky event organised by VeryVery magazine during which the annual V V Luxury Award ceremony took place. As per an already established tradition, awards were given to companies for their achievements in the luxury industry, their exclusive services and their unerring quality. This time a special venue was chosen for the event: Café Royal. “We’re very lucky to have been blessed with this building in 1865. We have restored many of its historical components but decided to include some modern elements as well. This combination, not least in the very heart of London, is truly unique!” marvels Mark Allvey, Managing Director of Café Royal.

The staff at Café Royal certainly created a pleasantly relaxed atmosphere. Awaiting the beginning of the ceremony, guests enjoyed champagne on one of the most beautiful summer terraces in town. This year, the nomination categories were Best Hotel, Best Watchmaker, Best Private Aviation Company and Best Property Developer. Mr Kopiev, Editor in Chief of V V magazine, awarded Best Hotel to the Café Royal Hotel whose flawless work was experienced by all the guests at the event. 4

The winner of Best Watchmaker turned out to be David Duggan Watches and the physical recipient of the award was the proud David Duggan himself. Guests were given the opportunity to view several models of his watches around a stand that was specially mounted for the occasion.

he V V team returned to Salon Prive for it's ninth year, the glamorous garden party showcased an array of dazzling cars and luxury brands all against the beautiful backdrop of Syon Park. Held over three days, it is believed that around two thousand bottles of champagne and five thousand lobsters were consumed during the event which is hosted in association with Boodles and Pommery. This year the event also played host to the Salon Prive Sale, an auction of some of the world's rarest and most exotic classic

Joining her on the judging panel were the founders of fashion brand Beulah London, Lady Natasha Isaac Rufus and Lavinia Brennan. Women were encouraged to dress to impress and it was necessary to wear a hat to enter the competition. An exquisite Gold and Diamond pendant from the Circus Collection by Boodles was this year's prize. Alongside the stunning collection of automobiles was a luxury village presenting the latest collections by designers such as Belstaff and beauty brands including Gatineau and Boadicea Fragrances. Guests sipped on Pommery Champagne and enjoyed a Lobster Luncheon whilst browsing the delights on offer. A number of débuts took place at Salon Prive putting it in the international limelight once again, débuts included the Morgan SP1 and the Range Rover Sport by Overfinch. A strong line up of hypercars also featured Koenigsegg's Agera R and LaFerrari. The Countess of Wessex Sophie is a wonderful patron and with her support and that of many others, DEBRA may find a break through which will be life changing for the sufferers of EB. The children who suffer with this very sad and painful condition of the skin are tremendously brave and still smile every day, even though their pain is intolerable. Amanda Rudin is a great supporter of the Debra charity.

THE SECOND RUSSIAN BALL IN LONDON: European elegance on a Russian scale

n the famous Grand Hall of Old Billingsgate, the second Russian Ball took place on 2nd November. Now a significant date in the shared Russo-British cultural calendar, the event was a great success. Members of the Russian cultural elite took part in the festivities at the Russian Ball in London as did lead soloists from the Viennese State Ballet Ketevan Papava and Kirill Kurlaev, soloists from the Bolshoy Venera Gimadieva and Pavel Chernykh as well as the multi-award winning champion British formation dance troupe XS Latin Cambridge. The celebration was accompanied by the melodies of the Russian Virtuosos of Europe chamber orchestra, conducted by their artistic director Felix Korobov, and Ross Mitchell’s orchestra His Band and Singers. The Russian Ball in London was held thanks to the support of the conglomerate FJM and Vebamos Event Management.
