WATER SKIING NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS PIARERE WATER SKI CLUB LAKE KARAPIRO We congratulate our Year 9 student, Aidan Peterson, for achieving 4th place in his age group at the National Championships for slalom water skiing last term. This was no easy feat for Aidan who broke his ankle whilst competing at the qualifying tournament in January. Since then he has been unable to train and only got back on his ski 2 ½ weeks prior to the nationals. Without a doubt, Aidan would have been on the podium but for this injury. A fantastic achievement and we are sure to hear about Aidan next season. Well done!

LIAM DIXON – ONE CHANCE YOUTH AWARDS Liam Dixon, Year 12, is a finalist in the One Chance Youth Awards. He is in two categories – “Most Outstanding Youth Performer” and the “X-factor people’s choice award”. For the X Factor People’s Choice award he needs as many votes as possible by 12 May. SELECTION FOR NZ YOUTH CLIMBING TEAM Congratulations to Tom Waldin who has been selected in the NZ Youth Climbing Team for 2017. He will be competing in the World Championships in Austria later in the year, as well as at the Oceania Championships in New Caledonia. IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARENTS / CAREGIVERS / STUDENTS _________________________________________________________________________________

STAGE CHALLENGE 7 weeks to go until Stage Challenge and rehearsals are in full swing! The date for the competition is Tuesday 13th June. Students need to have paid in full by 30th May. Tickets for the show are not available through school, this is a decision of the competition, they will be sold via Ticketek. Apologies at this stage we have no information on cost. Rehearsals begin on Sundays this week from 2pm to 5pm. We also have a rehearsal on Monday 6th June from 9am to 4pm. If your student cannot make either of these dates please email Katherine Beijeman, Year 10 Dean at beijemank@rotorualakes.school.nz Below is the rehearsal schedule for the first 3 weeks of term. We have added 2 after school rehearsals during the week for the full cast. I understand some students will have prior commitments but if they can attend that will help us cut down the number of rehearsals closer to the event. YEAR 10 CAMP In the last week of Term 1 70 excited Year 10 students left school for Okataina camp. This annual camp is aimed at encouraging students to expand their social circles, connect with the history of the area, challenge themselves with a variety of activities and gain the enjoyment that comes from education outside the classroom.

Unfortunately Cyclone Cook cut that short and the students returned to school a day before they were supposed to.

Jamie Trass and Robbie Meredith had this to say about camp: "Camp was an enjoyable, different and fun experience. Socially we got to meet people we had not worked with before. I enjoyed the problem solving because it was challenging and our team had to work together. The amazing race was also fun as we had to find answers in the bush. It was an amazing experience which I would recommend others to do and take that opportunity."

READER / WRITER SUPPORT Can you help?

Some students at RLHS need support with reading and writing during assessments so they can effectively communicate what they know. We need volunteers with good literacy skills to support these students by reading and/or writing for them in assessments both in class tests and in examinations. An added Ministry of Education requirement is that volunteers undergo Police vetting, for which the school submits the paperwork. NZMC MUSIC MENTORING AT RLHS Our music students had the chance to interact with an industry professional through the ongoing Ministry of Education program.

The Musicians Mentoring in Schools Programme supports students with achievement in NCEA music by inviting New Zealand musicians to go into schools and provide real-world expertise. The Music Department had a very successful and productive two days with Jimmy Xmas. This was held on campus on Tuesday 2 and Wednesday 3 May.

LADIES 1ST XI HOCKEY Final hockey season is underway. Mega changes in the close season with a new coach, manager and a host of new members in to the team. First game was a ‘grading’ match against JPC2. The team got off to a good start, defending well for the bulk of the first half with only occasional forays in to the opposition area. Stirring words at half time saw RLHS come out with vigour in the second half and the forays in to the opposition ‘D” became more frequent and co-ordinated. Sadly a moment’s inattention in the mid field allowed JPC to snatch a messy goal mid way through the half and confusion with the umpires allowed them to get a second moments later. By now it was a very tired RLHS team that were forced more and more on to the defence with Hannah Sutton making a superb clearance off the line but JPC managed to add a third with 5 minutes to play. A lot of work to be done before next week’s game against Western Heights but the team showed much promise. Player of the Day: Hannah Sutton.

BOP INTERMEDIATE & SECONDARY SCHOOLS SHOWJUMPING COMPETITION The BOP Intermediate and Secondary Schools Showjumping Competition was held in Edgecumbe on Tuesday 11 April.

In the 105cm ring, Amy Moore and Bella Uhl had an awesome day, achieving a total of 48 points for the team.

Amy received a 1st, 2nd and 6th place = 24 points Bella received a 2nd, 3rd and 4th place = 24 points Belinda Hatton was riding two horses and placed 1st in a round on the more experienced horse This event was Emma Jackson's first 80cm round which was a huge achievement for her to compete at that level.

Caitlyn Rust rode well as well competing at 90cm and achieving some clear rounds.

Next event is the horse trials in Taupo, May 20th and 21st.

HOCKEY 2nd XI Under the coaching eye of ex pupil Caitlin Poolman and Manager Mrs Helen Gainsford, the 2nd Xi started the season on a very positive note. Good defense and teamwork saw the team win 2- nil against Whakatane High 2.

Boys 1st XI First game of the season saw the team come out fighting. Coach ex pupil Isaac King, (with support from other ex pupils Caleb King, Josh Fraser and Manager Ms Jo Sturme) has a good number of "old" members to continue the development from previous years. With new players slotting in well, the team showed periods of solid passing, linking well with one another. Josh Donald finished some good teamwork with a strong shot into goal in the first half. The second half saw Whakatane High School 1 fight back putting our defense to the test, but again good teamwork saw Lakes hold our ground and finally another goal was scored by Oliver English. A promising start to the season. Win 2-0. Player of the day Oliver English. _________________________________________________________________________________

DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S HILLARY AWARD NEWS Congratulations to Euan Robinson and Holly Forbes! Euan and Holly completed Adventurous Journeys over the holidays at National Park, and can be very proud of their efforts in moving to the next level in their award.

Euan ROBINSON Gold level Practice Journey, 18-21 April Holly FORBES Silver level Qualifying Journey, 14-17 April From Gerry Purcell, who supervised the journeys: "Silver level participants had to deal with cold and extremely wet conditions during first three days, and with snowfall on the night they camped out. Gold level participants enjoyed fine, albeit cold, weather for their journey on the Tongariro Northern Circuit. All of the above performed credibly and were a pleasure to have been with in the great outdoors."

Mrs. Carlan-Riddell went to Government House in Auckland on April 26th, to support Gerry in his investiture for a Queen's Service Medal, presented by the Governor General, Dame Patsy Reddy. It was a fabulous day, and they enjoyed a private audience with Dame Patsy, where Mrs. Carlan-Riddell was able to tell her about the accomplishments of our students in their awards.

To all candidates/parents: Please make sure you are taking advantage of the numerous opportunities to complete your journeys listed in the newsletter. It is up to you to be motivated and organised! The award is designed for students that are independent and intrepid participants, and the award leader will not "chase" you to do the award. You have to want it, and go for it! That is why it is such a highly respected international award. Also, be sure to bring your books in to Mrs. CR once all your activities are ticked off, so we can order your awards and move you on to the next level.

Please take note of fee increases in the last newsletter, and be sure to get your current level activities signed off before July. See Mrs. CR anytime for any help with anything to do with the award, or to sign up in C3, the Art room.
