AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY EXPERIENCE On the 1st and 2nd of December this year 10 Year 10 Polynesian students from our school were given an insight into university life. Held at Auckland University, we were part of the BEAMS programme. BEAMS stands for Business, Engineering, Architecture, Medicine and Science. This programme came about because there are not many of our people in these professions. It was enjoyed by all who attended with Ms Curtis and Whaea Pani accompanying. We met and interacted with a lot of new people, teachers and students from other schools that were there. We were a part of all the workshops of the BEAMS programme which were a lot of fun and exciting to participate in. We were also fortunate and privileged to be able to spend the night in the University Halls. All who have attended have come away with a clearer understanding about these subjects and careers.

A FINAL WORK FROM THE PRINCIPAL It seemed not so long ago when I last wrote my end of school year article for the newsletter and now, it is here already. One thing I am sure is that, after close to one year, you have all improved and become better in one way or another and I hope you have achieved the goals you set for yourselves at the start of this school year. But even if you haven’t, don’t worry - just keep on trying, work hard, and, sooner or later, you will get there!

I remember at the start of the year, I encouraged you all to try hard and go beyond your limit. I’m glad to see that many of you have made it. If you have tried your best, and have become a better person of who you were yesterday, I commend you. You have done a great job! Your effort and labour will be the building blocks of your future success.

A long summer holiday lies ahead of you so plan it well. Try some new things to challenge yourselves, go outdoors and explore places you have never been to. Have fun with your friends and family, and do something worthwhile. Youth is too precious a thing to waste, and I should know since it has certainly passed me by!

For our year 13 students who are embarking on their journeys away from RLHS – I wish you all success and happiness and remember once a RLHS student always a RLHS student!

Finally, I would like to give my most sincere words of thanks to all our hardworking and dedicated staff - they are the glue that really holds it all together without whom RLHS would not be as successful as it is.

Representation expresses imaginative intent, in detail, and appropriate to the genre of songwriting

Imaginative thinking involves developing, structuring, and refining lyrical and musical concepts which may draw on visual or sonic imagery, ideas and personal experiences, and cultural inspiration. It also involves the quality of the blending of the lyrics with the melody and harmony lines, in relation to the songwriter’s intention.

It is intended that composition of waiata can be assessed in this standard.

Songwriting may be individual or collaborative. The songs may comprise any combination of individual and collaborative work. Collaborative songwriting involves two to five students working in a group. The individual or group realises or oversees the performance of the completed song. Each student’s creative contribution to the song is individually assessed. The three songs, including their lyrics, will be of sufficient complexity to be assessed at this level.

Representation includes both audio and visual formats. This includes clearly structured lyrics and musical representation according to appropriate performance practices, including style and genre. Evidence of representation will involve a:  recording  lyric and chord sheet and allows the song to be reproduced by others.

CAREERS DEPARTMENT NEWS BRIDGING THE GAP 2016! ________________________________________________________________________________________

PARENTS 101: ADVICE FOR THE BIG TRANSITION As the year’s end rapidly approaches, families are no doubt focusing on the immediate prospect of Year 13 exams and results. But most likely, they’re also thinking seriously about tertiary study in 2017. The transition from secondary school to university is exciting and challenging for students – but we’re also very mindful that parents are making a parallel shift!

And so we’ve published the University of Auckland Parents’ Guide, which is full of useful information about study here. The publication includes sections about various degree programmes, student support services, Auckland City, accommodation, the application process, and fees amongst other topics. You can download a copy from our website or order a printed copy by phoning 0800 61 62 63.

Practical advice: school subject choices As well as information about University systems and services, we also offer practical advice for parents who wish to support their son or daughter’s study decisions at school. These bear directly on their chances of acceptance into those University programmes that have “required subjects”, which students need to have passed at school. You can help steer things in the right direction by consulting the University’s 2017 Subject Guide for School Students (suitable for students Years 9 to 12). We recommend encouraging young people to enrol in subjects that really interest and motivate them rather than what might be perceived as highly career focused or more prestigious. Career-specific planning is definitely beneficial, but we also know that employers value all sort of subjects that aren’t overtly vocational in nature. Parents could also use some of the career-planning tools on the Careers New Zealand website. These help young people to identify and plan towards potential career paths. There’s also a module for parents. _________________________________________________________________________________  Generosity New Zealand/GiveME - This is an Online Scholarship Database available FREE in the school library OR the Careers Classroom. RLHS GATEWAY/COMMUNICATION & LEADERSHIP COURSE Congratulations to the following students who participated in The Learning Place Communication and Leadership course which was held this term: Harley Cassel, Sam Chadwick, Dylan Collett, Corban Frederick, Jackie Downs, Josh Elia, Tuhi George, Elijah Gran-Kapua, Kawhina Hohepa, Quinn Moore, Andries Notnagel, Shania Parkinson, Stace Pomare, Logan Rangitutia, Rikijean Rangitutia, Dion Rose, Ray Smith and Natalie Wisse. The course included three Unit Standards: Describe teams and team leadership; Contribute within a team or group which has an objective; Give and respond to feedback on performance and was held over two days. The course was based around Team Building and being a Team Leader and a Team Member. Students were required within their teams to find solutions to a number of scenarios both practical and hypothetical. All students worked well together and successfully completed the course. Well done to you all!

ROTORUA LAKES HIGH SCHOOL – “PARENTS IN PARTNERSHIP” A CAREERS & GATEWAY INITIATIVE Our 2016 Gateway Programme has had another successful year in supporting 110 students having the opportunity to gain experience in the workforce while gaining credits towards their NZQA results. Many of these students were supported by local businesses including: Retail, Hair and Beauty, Engineering, Medical, Swimming, Early Childcare, Health and Safety, First Aid, Leadership, Barista and Wood Manufacturing.

Completing a Gateway placement gives students the opportunity to experience first-hand what a career path in these industry areas would involve and help determine the subject choices which may need to be made to support these career choices.

The Careers Department Gateway Programme is achieving strong growth within the School. To help us to achieve the best outcomes and results for students, this is being shared with you, to gain expressions of interest from Parents/Caregivers/Whanau who own or manage a business and who would be willing to provide a Gateway placement and or work experience for our Senior students. We envisage students being placed in a business for 1 Day a week for 10 weeks.

If you are interested in being part of the Rotorua Lakes High School – PARENTS IN PARTNERSHIP” programme, please complete the following form and return it to the Careers Department by the start of the school year 2017.

COMMUNITY NOTICES

We are looking for a caring, supportive homestay family for an 11 year old Japanese International student. He will be attending Mokoia Intermediate School for the 2017 school year. Previous experience with international students is not essential.

It is preferable for the student to be within walking distance from school, if possible.

The homestay fee is $230.00 per week.
