David Geller is with us again to help you see areas to reconsider in your estimates and pricing, in how you buy and store metals, and in the profit you expect

your shop to turn. Geller helped many shops survive the economic downturn. But it’s not just a matter of survival. Your shop can help you thrive. 1 – 5 p.m. Hyatt, Skyway Suite AB RJO GOLF TOURNAMENT – EMERALD GREENS The site of this year’s golfing event is at the newest premier 36-hole golf course, which features a fun and challenging mix of holes.

Meet 10 New Vendors!

Complimentary Sunday Lunch

The Meet-a-Vendor Challenge is back, giving you the chance to win $750 and – even better – the opportunity to expand your supplier base.

With Sunday evening’s gala featuring a big dinner, we recommend that you enjoy a light lunch compliments of your generous RJO vendors on Sunday. They’re giving every store one $10 coupon redeemable at all buying floor concession stands. Thank them by spending more time – and money – shopping on the showroom floor.

Just introduce yourself to 10 RJO vendors you’ve never spoken with or used before, listen to what they can do for your business and ask for two business cards: one to keep and one to place in your Meet-a-Vendor Challenge envelope. Return your envelope to an RJO staff member at the registration desk by noon Monday, August 18.

Rules: 1. Business cards received must be from a vendor you have NEVER purchased from before. 2.

Extend your purchasing power in Minneapolis with the help of RJO purchase vouchers. You may receive as much as 2 percent additional savings on everything you purchase from our vendors at the show, based on your store’s 2013 purchase total.

You must have 10 cards from 10 different companies, not representatives.

3. You do not need to be present to win. Prizes will be announced at the Cash Giveaway Farewell Reception.

The keynote address will follow the meeting. 12:30 – 2 p.m. Hyatt, Green Lakes Ballroom, 4th Floor KEYNOTE ADDRESS “Leadership That Inspires Excellence”

Presented by Brigadier General Steve Ritchie and Mariana Ritchie The Dean of the Faculty of the USAF Academy in Colorado wrote to General Ritchie in 2013, “You are the embodiment of integrity, service, and excellence that inspire our cadets to

He is the only Air Force Pilot Ace in more than 60 years, yet his keynote presentation focuses not on his personal expertise or experience, but on what it takes in commitment, timing, excellence and focus for a Joint Service Team to extract a downed pilot and good friend from his jungle hiding place near the heart of the enemy. Also, you will hear first-hand of the dreams of a Romanian girl behind the Iron Curtain who longed for freedom in the United States. She will tell how the quest to be free would save her life. She came to America with nothing but a bag of clothes and 25 years later, she would become General Steve Ritchie’s wife. 1:15 – 1:55 p.m. (Following General Meeting Kick-off Luncheon Hyatt, Green Lakes Ballroom, 4th Floor BUYING FLOOR OPENING AND WELCOME RECEPTION Immediately following the keynote address, we’ll convene outside the

Educational Seminars 8:30 – 10:20 a.m.

Community ROI – Turning Customers into Your Advocates with Social Media Ben Peterson and Samantha Peterson In social media, it’s easy for businesses to get left behind in the world of instant connections, updates and breaking news. Learn in this session which social media outlets work best for your business. Whether it’s making your Facebook page more enticing or integrating Twitter and Instagram into your marketing tools, you’ll learn how to balance your business/community/ personal information. In addition, Ben and Samantha will meet personally with jewelers interested in better understanding why updating, monitoring and replying quickly to customers through social media is important.

8:30 – 9:20 a.m.

Passing Your Business to the Next Generation Chuck Frey, Charles Frey & Co. Turning over your business works best when there is a total buyout or some other no-strings attached transfer to the next generation. That’s not always possible. Charles Frey & Co. has worked with many retail jewelers with transition sales and strategies. The key is to provide for the financial needs of the selling generation and for the fiscal needs of the business going forward. Three considerations: how to agree on the price, how to structure the buyout or transfer, and how to fund the process and present it to the public. A Q/A session will help you with your specific situation.

Effective Leadership and Productive Management: Being the Best for Your Team Kate Peterson, Performance Concepts Are you a “resonant leader”? Are you someone who inspires and gets results, capable of leading your team through the shifting terrain of an uncertain age? We all know what effective leaders do. They set strategy; they motivate; they create a mission; they build a culture. We also know that in reality, however, the leader’s singular job is to get results. But how? The mystery of what leaders can and ought to do in order to spark the best performance from their people is age-old. The resonant leader knows that the processes associated with their essential tasks – setting direction, aligning people, and motivating – have evolved dramatically in recent times. In this seminar, you’ll learn how to build the skills and characteristics you need to be a resonant leader. You’ll take away practical suggestions that will help you create an inspiring vision, and energize people to support and work toward your goals. (This session is repeated at 11:30 a.m. – 12:20 p.m.)

Informed Choices for Business – Re: The Affordable Care Act Ken Deason, Federated Insurance Co. Business owners like you are scratching their heads about rising premium rates, inflated medical costs, millions of plan options, along with the new and revised legislation to the Affordable Care Act. Learn what we know today about the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and what it means to you as a business owner. We’ll review the reasons behind increased costs and how Federated Insurance Company and other insurers are responding to these challenges. When you are better informed, you make better choices in purchasing health insurance as we all wrestle with the future of this important benefit, or whether our business should even continue to offer it.

Educational Seminars 9:30 – 10:20 a.m.

Winning Unusually (or What’s Chocolate Got to Do with It?) Ellen Hertz, Max’s For 2013–2014, Max’s was named a Top Ten Designer Retailer by JCK Design Center. In 2011, Max’s was named America’s top Small Cool Store by Instore magazine. People describe Max’s as a great jewelry store, a candy store, a gift store, that chocolate place, a concept store, and the “I’m Sorry, Honey” store. Store owner Ellen Hertz thinks of Max’s as a jewelry store more than anything else, but knows customers might be more tempted by the beautiful hand-blown glass pieces and gift items, or the unique chocolates – bars, caramels, truffles, toffee and more – all made by chocolatiers from around the world. “Either way, it is my hope that you’ll find something that you love, as I’ve hand-selected everything in the store from artisans who I think represent the best in terms of design, craftsmanship and quality.”

Myths and Magic of the New Media – What you can and can’t do; what you can and can’t expect from online marketing Jim Ackerman, Ascend Marketing The pundits would have you believe that Internet marketing–whether through your website, email, social media or mobile–is the great panacea for marketing success. Well, if that’s true, why isn’t everybody who is online rich? Truth is, the New Media still are just that. Media. There are no magic pills, but they can be incredibly powerful marketing tools, to be wielded with profit-proven marketing principles and strategies. In this session, see all the myths debunked and blown away, and discover the real strengths of online marketing, the pitfalls to avoid and the opportunities to exploit.

10:30 – 11:20 a.m.

Increase Your Sales 10 Percent with Special Events Roxana Lucas and Nick Failla, Collected Concepts Special events should account for 10 – 20 percent of your annual sales, according to Collected Concepts presenters Roxana Lucas and Nick Failla. Are your events getting the results you want? If not, attend this seminar to learn how to plan, promote, and implement special events, with a focused look at how to use social media. Safe and Secure the Intelligence Way Deborah Pierce and Patti Weber, Pierce-Weber Partnership Deborah Pierce is a retired FBI Special Agent. Patti Weber is a 31-year veteran of the CIA’s National Clandestine Service. Together, they launched a partnership based in Minnesota to share security tips based on their combined 51 years in law enforcement and intelligence. Learn what to do if you are being followed, how to travel more securely abroad, and work and live more safely here in the U.S. Even though you are in the jewelry industry, you don’t have to be a choice target.

Mistakes I Have Made as a Retailer and What I’ve Learned from Them Barbara Hight-Randall, Hight & Randall, Personal Jeweler Many RJO members recall Barbara Hight from her days representing the Diamond Promotion Service. Others may remember that Barbara was a GIA instructor. With that great background, you might think she would have been error free when she and her husband Randy Randall went into the retail business together in Rochester, MN. She says that is NOT the case, that she’s made plenty of mistakes, and that she’s ready to help others learn from them. Join us for this very specific session intended to help you take a bypass in the School of Hard Knocks.

Mobile Message Marketing Brad Simon, internet4jewelers Mobile cellphone usage has exploded! Everywhere you turn someone is texting or using their mobile device to access the Internet. Discover how to tap into this dynamic new media to market your jewelry store and communicate with consumers. Learn how to easily create and implement mobile campaigns such as text-to-win, and mobile coupons. Email open rates have dropped dramatically, and Facebook reach is declining. It is crucial for your business success today to develop an active mobile list to communicate with your clients and potential customers. In addition, strict new laws have been enacted regarding mobile advertising. Learn what you need to know to remain mobile compliant.

How to Get Twice the Media Bang for Half the Media Buck Jim Ackerman, Ascend Marketing Yellow Pages? Long gone. Newspapers? Fossilizing like dinosaurs. But other traditional media are alive and well and, in some cases, performing better than ever. If you’ve been thinking you’ve got to shift all of your marketing efforts to the Internet (so much cheaper) you may have bought a bill of goods. Truth is, traditional media often out-performs online media for generating more sales at a lower cost of acquisition. Yes, you really can discover how to double the response rates from your traditional media while you actually slash your media spend by up to half! Worth it? While we all know you can learn something valuable from every conversation, for this evening, we’ll ask you to self-select by the number of employees in your store. Choose the phrase that comes closest to describing your business. • “Just the two of us and the part-timer” • “There are eight in the store altogether” • “Full time employees of 12 or more” NOTE: Participants must indicate an employee phrase on the registration form to attend this session. RJO will use this information to assign your room. Friday Check In: 6:30 p.m. / Meeting: 7 – 8:30 p.m. Hyatt, 2nd Floor
