Welcome to the spring/summer edition of Discover magazine. Along with the warmer weather and the return of nature’s vivid colours, we usher in a whole host of brand-new Riviera Travel holidays for 2026: five-star river cruises, exclusive yacht itineraries, a once-ina-lifetime Arctic expedition cruise, and brand-new European tours and new adventures curated just for solo travellers – whatever and wherever you’re considering, we have something for everyone.

After listening to your feedback, we’ve also revamped our Signature tours, so they include improved experiences to take your holiday to the next level.

But all this newness isn’t limited to 2026. This year sees the launch of two environmentally friendly, state-of-the-art ships poised to cruise Europe’s iconic rivers: the MS Riviera Rose, a luxurious 80-metre-long boutique hotel, sailing on the Douro, while MS Riviera Radiance sails on the Danube.

You can read about the different, wonderful cruise experiences you can expect with Riviera in this issue’s articles about our waterborne voyages by yacht and clipper, as well as our themed and festive river cruises. Curious about rail journeys? We’ve got that covered, too.

We also feature some of the incredible places we visit, from the ‘floating city’ of Venice to exciting Seoul, a capital that never fails to impress. Come along as we show you our favourite views across the globe, plus the fabulous cities that have played host to Europe’s biggest party, Eurovision.

And as always, I invite you to write to me as I truly enjoy hearing from you. Send your thoughts and any feedback to phil.h@rivieratravel.co.uk

With very best wishes,

A life in travel

How did your career in travel begin?

As a child, I was fully immersed in travel. My mum was a flight attendant for Ford and GoAir and she would frequently return with treats for my siblings and me. My childhood was full of airline family-social days, and I used to love exploring hangars and sitting in the cockpit of brand-new airbuses ready to take to the skies.

My early life experiences gave me the “travel bug” and in my early 20s, I was lucky enough to travel extensively across Europe, Asia and Oceania, where I enjoyed extended periods living and working in Berlin (Germany) and Franz Josef (New Zealand).

What brought you to Riviera Travel?

Following a period of working in restaurants and bars, I took a couple of months off to cycle through France to the southernmost tip of Spain (Tarifa in Andalucía). Upon my return, I was keen to leave the city life behind, follow my passion for travel and make the Midlands my home. And that’s when I saw a job advert for Riviera Travel.

What

do you think you’ve learnt from your time at

Riviera Travel?

I joined Riviera Travel in October 2018 initially as a Travel Consultant, and enjoyed speaking with our guests over the telephone and hearing personal travel stories of how previous Riviera Travel holidays had been both enjoyable and educational in equal parts.

Fast-forward six and a half years, I now work as a Learning & Development Partner offering my knowledge and experience to existing and new members of the Riviera Travel community. During my time, I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy a few Riviera Travel holidays, and most recently enjoyed exploring the ancient sites of the Silk Road in Uzbekistan.

Where are your favourite places and why?

For me, my favourite places tend to involve food and drinks. A couple of personal favourites that I would highly recommend are Pipa’s Snack Bar in Ponta da Cruz (Madeira) for incredible marinated flame-grilled tuna steaks, and Pulau Tikus Wan Tan Mee House in George Town, Penang (Malaysia)!

What are you looking forward to most?

Looking ahead in 2025, there’s plenty to be excited about! Two brand-new ships are due to set sail, our solo holiday collection is building from strength to strength, and I’m personally excited to launch an Early Careers programme at Riviera Travel for the first time. We’ll be offering work experience placements and apprenticeships across a range of departments, giving young people the chance to gain valuable experiences and to begin a career in the travel industry, with the guidance and support of the Riviera team. Keep a look out on our website and social media for more information.

What are your own holiday plans this year/next?

I’m optimistic the British summer will make an appearance this year, but as a back-up, in June I’m heading to the Austrian Tyrol for a 10-day hut-to-hut hike to explore the lakes and mountains – and to eat my body weight in apple strudel!

If you were marooned on a desert island, who would you like with you and why?

Good question! My grandparents would be at the top of the list. I always loved hearing the stories of their life together – they gave me the belief that anything is possible if you set your mind to it. David Attenborough (I’m sure he’s on most people’s list) and finally, Richard Branson, in the hope that he would return the favour and invite me to his desert island!

24 hours in

Venice

A city unlike any other, Venice is a floating marvel of history, culture and timeless beauty. If you find yourself with just 24 hours to experience this enchanting place, then read on as we take you on a journey through ‘La Serenissima’, uncovering its many fascinating layers with the keen eye and spirit of a seasoned traveller.

St Mark’s Campanile in Venice once collapsed in 1902 and was rebuilt exactly as it had been, using the motto ‘com’era, dov ‘era’ – meaning ‘as it was, where it was.’

Start your day with an early morning stroll along the instantly recognisable Grand Canal, where the water shimmers beneath the soft light of the rising sun. The boats are still sparse at this time and the usual crowds have yet to arrive, giving you the rare chance to peacefully soak up the serenity of ‘the Floating City’. As the sun rises over the majestic palazzos that line the waterway, you’ll be reminded of how Venice was once the heart of a maritime empire. Note the various architectural styles of these superb palaces reflecting the different periods of history: Baroque, Gothic and Renaissance, some dating back to the 13th century.

This ‘City of Bridges’ is home to more than 400, and you must make sure to see the most famous of them all, the Rialto Bridge. From here, a short walk takes you to Piazza San Marco, the heart of Venice. Here, the magnificent basilica stands proudly, its domed roof and Byzantine mosaics a testament to centuries of influence and grandeur. It’s easy to imagine the many travellers who have stood here before, from the Crusaders to the Venetian merchants. Marvel at the intricate carvings on the façade of the basilica and the enormous bell tower, the Campanile, from which you can gaze out over the rooftops of Venice in every direction.

Next, perhaps visit the Doge’s Palace, an imposing embodiment of the political might of Venice in the 14th century. Here you’ll find the famous Bridge of Sighs, named for the prisoners who were led to their cells with a final glimpse of the outside world. Inside, the palace’s ornate halls are filled with works of art, from Titian to Tintoretto. A walk through this palace is a vivid reminder of the city’s power and wealth.

For lunch, why not stop at a traditional trattoria tucked away in the winding alleys? Surrounded by water, Venice is known for its seafood, and there’s nothing quite like savouring an appetiser of marinated sardines before moving on to fresh risotto with cuttlefish, while seated at a table overlooking a canal.

After a delicious meal, board a Vaporetto, Venice’s iconic waterbus, and make your way to the islands of Murano and Burano. Murano is world-renowned for its glassblowing artisanship, and a visit to one of the glass factories provides fascinating insight into a centuries-old craft. In Burano, the colourful houses stand out against the canals to create a picturesque scene that’s a feast for the eyes.

As evening sets and the crowds thin, return to the centre of Venice to enjoy a leisurely gondola ride along the smaller canals, where you can drift under romantic bridges. We also recommend losing yourself in the narrow streets, each turn offering a new discovery, be it a hidden courtyard or a charming café. At night, Venice takes on a different kind of magic and invites further exploration illuminated by lanterns. In 24 hours, you’ll have only just scratched the surface, but it will have been a most memorable day.

A cleaner future,

How your holidays are helping transform lives in Kenya together:

Rivers are essential to life. But for many people living in growing cities, polluted rivers are a daily burden. That’s the reality in Kisumu, a lakeside city in Kenya, where uncollected waste clogs waterways, harms health and disrupts daily life.

We began our partnership with Practical Action in 2023, supporting their work to tackle the waste crisis in Kisumu. For every booking you make, we donate £2 to help clean up the River Auji and improve waste management in the city’s informal settlements.

Thanks to you, this funding is already making a real difference.

From waste crisis to clean homes and rivers

Kisumu produces over 250 tonnes of waste each day. Just 39% of it is collected. Much of the rest ends up dumped or burned in the open – especially in poorer areas. Plastic pollution in rivers and streets poses a serious risk to health and the environment.

With your support, Practical Action’s Kenya team has partnered with local waste workers to make a difference. As a result:

• Fifteen waste groups now serve across homes, schools, churches and markets

25,000 people

4,000 2,000 250 7 -

• informal waste collectors and traders have been trained in safer, more efficient handling

• colour-coded bins have been distributed to households to help separate waste at source.

Cleaner streets and rivers have led to fewer waste-related illnesses, especially in children. These practical changes are helping build a circular economy, where waste becomes a resource that supports jobs, health and the environment.

Kisumu produces over 250 tonnes of waste each day. Just 39% of it is collected.

People at the heart of progress

At the core of this progress are the waste collectors who keep the city moving. Once working in unsafe and unhealthy conditions, they’re now being recognised by local authorities for the vital role they play. Riviera’s support has helped fund ongoing engagement with city leaders, improving working conditions for these essential workers.

Local residents are stepping up too. In Obunga, Nyalenda and other settlements, more households are signing up for waste collection services so illegal dumping and burning of waste is falling.

The difference is visible. River Auji, once choked with plastic, is starting to flow clearer. Streets are cleaner. Children are healthier. And the project continues to grow.

What’s next

Thanks to your support, we’ve already helped fund major improvements in Kisumu. Now, we’re going further.

In December 2024, we doubled our donation from £1 to £2 per customer booking. This extra funding is allowing the project to expand its reach and offer more training, equipment and support.

Our partnership in Kisumu is built on long-term support and shared goals – we’re so proud of what’s been achieved so far and excited about what’s to come.

Eurovisioncities

It’s that time of year again: Eurovision, a brilliant, glittering spectacle where the bizarre meets the beautiful in a whirlwind of music, costumes and frenetic energy. Countries from all corners of Europe gather in a kaleidoscopic celebration of song and culture. From the majestic to the sometimes ridiculous, Eurovision is a testament to the power of music to unite, astound and, above all, entertain. Here, we cover some of the most fascinating places that have hosted Europe’s favourite party.

Switzerland

This year’s host, Switzerland, was the very first winner of the competition back in 1956, when the event was but a twinkle in Europe’s eye. Since then, Switzerland has danced and sung its way through the years with varying degrees of success. You might recall Celine Dion’s triumph in 1988 with ‘Ne partez pas sans moi’, the country’s second win and the last winning song to be performed in French.

Counting this year, Switzerland will have hosted Eurovision three times: first in Lugano, then Lausanne and Basel. Nestled on the shores of the shimmering lake, Lugano is a charming Swiss town with a delightful mix of Mediterranean warmth and Alpine grandeur, where palm trees sway gently and mountains rise sharply in the distance. Lausanne, perched on Lake Geneva’s edge, offers stunning views. Highlights include the Olympic Museum, Gothic cathedral and picturesque lakeside promenades. The host city of 2025 is Basel, situated along the Rhine and the perfect destination for art lovers and culture vultures. Explore its charming old town, world-class museums like the Kunstmuseum, and buzzing markets.

Sweden

Sweden is a Eurovision powerhouse, known for its impressive track record and musical innovation. With a remarkable six wins, including iconic performances by ABBA and, in more recent times, Loreen, Sweden’s contribution to the contest is legendary. The country consistently delivers polished, catchy entries that often top the charts. Stockholm hosts the grand final when Sweden wins, offering a celebration of music and creativity.

The competition has been held seven times in Sweden: thrice each in Stockholm and Malmö, and once in Gothenburg. Stockholm, the country’s vibrant capital, effortlessly blends rich history with modern innovation. Spread across 14 islands, it boasts stunning architecture, from the medieval charm of Gamla Stan to the sleek design of modern buildings. Mustvisits include the Royal Palace, the Vasa Museum, and – for Eurovision fans – the striking ABBA Museum. Wander along scenic waterways, enjoy a fika (coffee break) in trendy cafes or explore the city’s thriving arts scene. Near the southwestern tip of Sweden is Malmö, a mix of modern architecture and cultural diversity, while Gothenburg charms with its laidback vibe, scenic canals and lively food scene.

Italy

Italy has long been a standout in Eurovision, bringing a blend of passionate performances and iconic music. Since its debut in 1956, the country has won three times, with standout entries like the operatic ‘Grande Amore’ by Il Volo and the electrifying ‘Zitti e buoni’ by Måneskin. Known for its rich musical heritage, Italy remains a key player in Eurovision’s colourful history. One of the most covered Eurovision songs is Domenico Mudugno’s ‘Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu’, representing Italy in 1958. More famously known as ‘Volare’, the infectious song has been covered by many artists, such as Dean Martin, Cliff Richard and David Bowie.

Italy has hosted the competition three times in Rome, Naples and Turin, all different cities offering a unique slice of Italian culture. Rome, the Eternal City, dazzles with ancient landmarks like the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Vatican City. Naples, the birthplace of pizza, pulses with energy, from the bustling Spaccanapoli to the dramatic views of Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii nearby. Turin, often overlooked, is a sophisticated gem known for its Baroque architecture.

Netherlands

Since its debut in 1956, the Netherlands has been a strong and consistent presence in Eurovision. With five victories to its name, including the iconic 2019 win by Duncan Laurence with ‘Arcade’, the country continues to deliver memorable performances. Known for its diverse musical styles, the Netherlands embraces everything from pop and rock to folk and electronic music. Eurovision in the Netherlands is a celebration of creativity and innovation, often showcasing artistic performances and powerful vocals. Interestingly, the Netherlands is one of a few countries with an entry whose lyrics were in a made-up language; the song was ‘Amambanda’ by Treble in the year 2006.

Eurovision has been held in the Netherlands a total of five times: twice in The Hague, and once each in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Hilversum. In the north, Amsterdam’s iconic canals, world-class museums like the Rijksmuseum, and fascinating culture mean the city is full of charm and history. Further south is Rotterdam, known for its striking modern landmarks, like the Cube Houses and the Erasmus Bridge. Explore its progressive art scene, innovative museums and dynamic food culture, all set along the scenic river.

Meanwhile the Hague on the coast is home to international courts and stunning beaches, combining culture, politics and nature. Nearby Hilversum is a quieter escape, renowned for its media industry and green spaces, providing a perfect contrast to the exciting cities of Amsterdam and Rotterdam.

Luxembourg

While Luxembourg may not participate in Eurovision every year, its legacy in the competition is noteworthy. With five victories, the small country has certainly played a significant role in the song competition’s history, especially during the 1970s and 1980s, although it’s interesting to note that none of the five winners were actually from Luxembourg! Their wins, including memorable performances by artists like Jean Philippe and the energetic ‘Poupée de cire, poupée de son’ by France Gall, cemented Luxembourg as a key player in the early years of the contest.

Luxembourg, a charming blend of old-world allure and modern sophistication, is a unique escape in the heart of Europe. Explore the fairytale-like historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with its medieval castles, narrow streets and the stunning Bock Casemates. The city’s modern side thrives in the Kirchberg district, home to contemporary architecture and cultural institutions. A day on board our clipper ships

Tall ships conjure up visions of the high seas and a golden age of adventure. With their towering masts and streamlined hulls, these sleek vessels were the epitome of maritime brilliance in the 19th century, racing across oceans and into legend. Clipper ships are forever etched in our imaginations, symbolising an era when the sea held both mystery and promise, and every voyage was an adventure waiting to unfold.

If you ever find yourself on board one such vessel, it’s a world away from the rush of modern life. There’s something magical about waking up to the gentle sway of a tall ship. The meticulously crafted woodwork and billowing sails feel ageless, yet you can rest assured that a Riviera Travel clipper cruise is one that’s modern with a vintage twist, designed for those who prefer the romance of history but with the luxuries of the present.

At breakfast, you’re greeted by our charming crew and the smell of freshly brewed coffee. The sight of golden pastries still warm from the oven is almost enough to make you forget the scenic views outside. We’re sailing across the glorious Mediterranean, headed for sun-kissed shores and another day of eye-opening excursions.

For now, it’s a leisurely morning and there’s plenty to do on board. Some guests withdraw to the library, where soft leather chairs invite you to sink into a good book, while others ascend to the deck to bask in the sun or chat with the crew, who are always happy to share their knowledge of sailing.

On days when the weather is fine, guests are even welcome to help the crew raise the sails.

Should you meet the captain, he can explain the intricacies of navigating a vessel such as this. It’s clear that, for all the modern amenities aboard, the heart of this ship is still rooted in centuries of tradition, and there’s a certain thrill that comes with knowing that.

Soon, the ship has reached its first port of call: a charming seaside town that looks like something out of a postcard. There’s no rush at all – join an excursion ashore if you like, or simply relax and watch the town unfold before you. With all our itineraries, there’s ample free time to explore. Wander through narrow alleys, where locals exchange greetings and the scent of fresh seafood mingles with the salty air. Pause to admire the handsome buildings standing as silent witnesses to history. You could watch the world go by at a café, watching life unfold in these unhurried corners of the Mediterranean.

After some time wandering, perhaps return to the ship, where the crew welcomes you back warmly. There’s time for afternoon tea if you’re peckish, or for a cold drink on the deck in time to watch the sun descend toward the horizon. Make sure you save room for dinner – a delightful selection of courses that change nightly from the à la carte menu. On board, there are no fixed mealtimes or seating. The maître d’ will seat you with other guests arriving at the same time in tables of 6 or 8. It’s the perfect chance to reminisce about the day and your fellow diners will likely also have stories to share. Some guests are on their first adventure aboard a clipper, while others could be seasoned sailors. Regardless, the atmosphere is convivial and there’s a gentle camaraderie among guests, united by the magic of sailing on this majestic vessel.

A day on board our tall ships isn’t just a voyage across the sea – it’s a journey back in time with enough modern luxury to make you feel completely at ease. Doesn’t that sound like an exceptional way to travel?

Spotlight onSeoul

South Korea’s dazzling capital, Seoul, is a feast for the senses. Rich history, tantalising street food, vibrant art, K-pop energy, and a blend of ancient charm with modern innovation form just some of the fascinating facets that make this jewel truly extraordinary.

To get under its seemingly immaculate skin, Gyeongbok Palace is a superb introduction. The largest and arguably most impressive of the Five Grand Palaces of the Joseon Dynasty nestles in the heart of Seoul, affording a glimpse into Korea’s royal past. As you wander through the palace grounds, admire the sweeping courtyards, intricate rooftops and serene gardens that have stood for centuries.

alleys, pausing to admire the beautifully preserved hanok (traditional Korean houses). You’ll feel as though you’ve stepped back in time away from the buzz of the modern city.

For a taste of Seoul’s artsy side, Insadong is an eclectic neighbourhood where narrow streets are lined with traditional tea houses, antique shops and galleries showcasing contemporary Korean art. It’s a great place for unique souvenirs, such as hand-painted fans, calligraphy scrolls and handmade pottery. Art enthusiasts can visit the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, a celebration of Korea’s vibrant art scene.

When it comes to gastronomy, Gwangjang Market captures the essence of Seoul’s exciting food scene, with dozens of vendors serving up authentic Korean dishes. You’ll encounter the slightly smoky aroma of bindaetteok (mung bean pancakes) sizzling on griddle pans, the sweet and spicy scent of tteokbokki (rice cakes) and the earthy tang of pickled vegetables and kimchi.

chic cafés can be found in the glamorous Gangnam district, made famous by K-pop (Korean pop) artist Psy. A trip to Seoul would arguably be incomplete without a peek at K-pop culture, a global phenomenon focused on innovative music and dynamic choreography. The Coex Mall boasts an interactive space with live performances and exhibits dedicated to iconic artists, such as SHINee and aespa.

When the sun sets, there’s an entirely different side of Seoul to explore. Enjoy live music in the cosy jazz bars of Itaewon or Hongdae, relax over drinks in the one of the many upscale bars of Gangnam, or seek out a themed café that suits your interests. A great way to unwind is with a visit to the iconic Namsan Seoul Tower, an instantly recognisable landmark of Seoul which offers superb panoramic views of the entire city. It’s especially stunning at night, when the city lights twinkle across the skyline and the building itself is beautifully illuminated.

The truth about our tours

If you’ve never been on an escorted tour, you might have questions such as these: what happens exactly, what’s included in the holiday, and will I be lost in a large group of travellers? In this article, we explain what you can expect from a Riviera Travel tour, in particular, and perhaps it could be just the right kind of experience for you.

The Best of Japan tour

Departing June to September 2025 & February to November 2026 rivieratravel.co.uk/mjp

13 days from

£4,499PP

First of all, an escorted tour is a way of travel where you leave the complexities of travel planning to the professionals while you, intrepid explorer, get to sit back and enjoy the ride. You’re whisked away to distant lands, accompanied by engaging guides who know all the ins and outs of navigating you through the wonders of the world, sharing expert knowledge, local secrets and personal anecdotes about what makes the places you visit just so very special.

But wait – did you know not all tours are the same? Not all travellers want the same experience, so Riviera Travel offer three different types of tours: Classic, Signature and Grand. Our Classic tours are our bestsellers and what our guests have come to love about our holidays through the years, while our Signature tours are small-group versions of these tours with extra, exclusive excursions included, which means guests enjoy more experiences in a more personal setting. Our Signature tours also include the services of two local guides and stays in hotels with a minimum rating of four stars.

For those craving more time away, our Grand tours give you many opportunities for relaxation and cultural immersion. For example, our Grand Tour of New Zealand with Australia takes you Down Under for a glorious 26 days on a superb journey of discovery across these two wonderful countries.

Perhaps the biggest myth about escorted tours is that the group sizes are always too large. This couldn’t be further from the truth, at least with Riviera’s tours! You can expect no more than 36 guests on our Classic European tours, and from 2026, on our Classic worldwide tours as well. If you prefer a more personal experience, we also offer Signature escorted tours that have an average group size of 22 guests.

Tateyama Ropeway
Sensoji Temple

With all our tours, there’s no stress about where to go, where to stay and getting lost in a maze of unfamiliar streets – unless wandering spontaneously is what you wish to do! Our escorted tours are the kind of trip where everything is sorted and all you have to do is show up, ready for camaraderie with likeminded travellers and the joy of discovery.

Of course, all the little details are included as well: flights from your local airport, transfers, eye-opening excursions, and the services of Riviera’s Tour Managers, the true experts who will ensure every moment runs smoothly, and no task you throw at them is ever too big or too small. There’s no need to worry about booking tickets for any of the excursions in our itineraries, as these are always included.

When planning our itineraries, our experts have thoughtfully balanced the many guided tours and visits with free time for guests. This time can be spent visiting places on your bucket list, exploring further on your own, or simply relaxing in your hotel. In fact, you can choose to opt out of any of our included excursions, should you really wish to.

5 outfits

to pack on a river cruise

Ever wondered what to take with you on one of our river journeys? Or perhaps now you’ve booked your dream holiday with us, you’re ready to cruise through Europe in style. Here are some ideas for what you might need during your time with us to stay comfortable while looking effortlessly chic!

For warm days

When meandering through Europe on warm days, comfort and breathability are key. Light, airy fabrics like cotton, linen and moisture-wicking blends will keep you cool as you enjoy the sunshine from the sun deck of your floating hotel.

For daytime excursions, opt for loosefitting, stylish outfits, such as a flowy sundress or tailored shorts with a polo shirt. Comfortable walking shoes or sandals are a must for exploring those charming cobblestone streets. Top it all off with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to shield yourself from the UV rays – and don’t forget the sun cream.

For rainy days

On those inevitably rainy days, the goal is to stay dry without sacrificing style. A lightweight, packable rain jacket is a must-have – we recommend one that’s both waterproof and breathable. Choose slim-fit trousers or a water-resistant skirt, and pair them with waterproof shoes to keep your feet dry. A scarf can also add both warmth and an extra touch of elegance.

Although rainy days are part of the adventure on a river cruise – you WON’T need to pack an umbrella – we have them on-board just in case, so save the space for an extra pair of shoes or a good book!

For more special occasions

One of the highlights of our river cruises is the Captain’s Dinner, a special event where guests are invited to enjoy a fabulous dinner with the ship’s captain. Not only is it a celebration of the journey, it’s also an opportunity to dress up and soak up the jubilant atmosphere.

The dress code is more dressy casual, so there’s no need to go full black tie – think refined yet relaxed. Men can opt for a lightweight blazer paired with chinos or crisp trousers, while women may gravitate toward an elegant dress or a tailored blouse with trousers combo. Adding a stylish shawl or wrap can elevate the outfit for evening wear. To complete the outfit, go for a smart pair of loafers or stylish ballet flats that are comfortable for walking but still polished enough for dinner.

Although most of our river cruises include all meals, you’re more than welcome to seek out a restaurant ashore and if there’s a dress code, these outfits will come in handy.

For lounging by the pool

Some of our ships feature splash pools where you can cool off and unwind, so you might wish to pack a swimsuit or even a sporty rash guard for sun protection. Swimsuits that fit well, are easy to dry and lightweight are ideal for travel. Add a stylish sarong or breezy cover-up to throw on after your swim, and a wide-brimmed hat to shield your face from the sun. Remember the sun cream and a pair of sunglasses if you plan on lounging by the pool.

For staying active

Keeping fit while cruising through Europe adds a little extra energy to your daily excursions on shore. Most of our river cruise vessels have a fitness area, so you might wish to take your gym gear. Pack your breathable, moisture-wicking workout clothes or a lightweight t-shirt. Of course, a good pair of running shoes is essential. We supply water bottles on board so you can stay hydrated.

After a good workout, why not treat yourself to a massage or spa treatment on board? Many of our ships offer such services, which are the perfect way to relax your body and set you up for another wonderful day of exploring.

And the goes to… award

In the ever-changing world of travel, awards are not just shiny accolades – they serve as a critical barometer of excellence. For travellers seeking the best holidays, these awards can be a useful guide to companies that consistently deliver outstanding experiences. Whether it’s river cruises or escorted tours, the travel industry has set high standards, driven by the pursuit of remarkable service and innovation. From the sleek luxury of a river cruise ship to the insightful cultural excursions of an expertly guided tour, awards help shine a light on the right choices, steering travellers toward unforgettable holidays.

DECEMB ER 2024
ESCORTE D TOURS

As the travel industry grows more competitive, innovation has become a key factor in determining which companies stand out above the rest. It’s no longer enough to simply offer a service; companies must continually meet the changing demands of a discerning travellers – and rightfully so. River cruise operators, for instance, are expected to have ships that not only match the luxury of five-star hotels but also provide itineraries that explore enchanting destinations and offer enriching cultural experiences at every port. It’s a delicate balance of luxury, convenience and cultural immersion – something that only the best in the industry can pull off. Tour operators are expected to offer holidays that go beyond the typical to unveil hidden gems that only the locals know about, with expert guides who offer invaluable insights into each destination’s heart and soul.

At Riviera Travel, we’re proud to be a company that has consistently demonstrated our commitment to excellence and guest satisfaction. By doing so, we’ve cultivated a loyal following that’s quick to recommend our services to others. Our success is also a testament to our dedication to creating a sense of belonging. We are known for treating every guest like family, making sure that once they travel with us, they feel like part of something much larger.

What’s more, our efforts have been consistently recognised throughout the years. For 13 years running, Riviera Travel has earned the coveted “Which? Recommended Provider” status. This endorsement from Which? magazine, one of the UK’s most respected consumer publications, is no small feat. Known for its independent, unbiased reviews and rigorous testing, Which? provides invaluable guidance to consumers, helping them make informed decisions about the products and services they purchase.

At the 2024 Wave Awards, Riviera Travel triumphed with three major awards: Best River Cruise Line; Best Escorted & Specialist Tour Operator; and Best for Solo Travellers. These awards highlight the best in the cruise and travel sectors, and are organised by Real Response Media, which own World of Cruising magazine, widely regarded as the UK’s leading publication for all things cruise-related.

Moreover, the British Travel Awards 2024 added to our growing collection of accolades, with multiple wins across categories including Best Travel Company: for river cruise holidays; for special interest holidays; for arts and culture holidays; and to the Far East/Central Asia. The British Travel Awards are a particularly significant measure of public opinion, as they are the largest consumervoted travel awards in the UK. An impressive 1,207,712 votes were cast in 2024 by over 400,000 leisure travellers, underlining the importance of consumer choice and the power of guest satisfaction in determining industry standards.

In recent years, online review sites such as Feefo and Trustpilot have gained considerable prominence, offering consumers a platform for authentic feedback. Feefo ensures the integrity of its reviews by requiring verified purchases, so only those who have actually made a transaction can share their experiences. Trustpilot, meanwhile, encourages interaction between customers and businesses, fostering a level of transparency and accountability. As a result, they’ve become invaluable resources for consumers looking for honest insights before committing to a purchase.

The recognition awarded by these companies is not just a reflection of past achievements – they are a stepping stone to even greater things. At Riviera Travel, we certainly do not rest on our laurels but continuously strive to enhance our holidays, making sure each guest enjoys a seamless and memorable journey, for years to come.

Europe’sgolden season

The season of mists and mellow fruitfulness is often a wonderful time of year to travel, and with very good reason. Autumn casts a spell on Europe’s rivers, and whichever of the continent’s waterways you opt for, a cruise at this special time of year isn’t just scenic, but quietly spectacular. The air is crisp and fresh and whilst you might need an extra layer, it’s the perfect season for exploring picturesque little riverside towns. Imagine sipping a glass of wine from this year’s harvest, surrounded by vineyards awash in autumn’s fiery hues, or discovering imperial cities that feel more intimate without the summer throngs.

The striking turquoise waters, caused by glacial flour in the water, reflect the awe-inspiring, snowy Southern Alps. Sitting right at the water’s edge is perhaps the world’s most stunningly located religious structure, the Church of the Good Shepherd. And for the stargazers, the clear night skies here offer remarkable views of the constellations.

One of Croatia’s most renowned highlights is Plitviče Lakes National Park, home to not just one but 16 gorgeous lakes, whose emerald waters cascade over a series of waterfalls, creating a soothing soundscape and feast for the eyes. Follow the wooden walkways that connect the lakes to wander through this mesmerising landscape. The colours change with the seasons, shifting from deep blues to bright greens. Each lake even has its own story or legend, adding a layer of history and mystery.

Inspiring views

we love

There’s something truly magical about witnessing a breathtaking view during your travels. Whether it’s the towering peaks of snowcapped mountains, the serene reflection of a crystal-clear lake, or the undulating hills of a verdant countryside, nature never fails to impress.

Then there’s the beauty of historic towns, where centuriesold architecture and cobblestone streets whisper secrets from the past, or the awe-inspiring skyline of a cosmopolitan city shaped by people.

All these evoke a sense of wonder and create wonderful experiences that, when caught from the right vantage point, become etched in our memory, offering a sense of perspective that connects us to the world around us. In this article, we share some of our favourite views.

The Great Wall of China

Milford Sound, New Zealand

Nestled in New Zealand’s Fiordland National Park, Milford Sound offers one of the most incredible views on Earth. As you approach this breathtaking fiord, towering cliffs rise sharply from the sea, their jagged peaks often shrouded in mist, adding an ethereal quality to the landscape. The water, a deep emerald green, mirrors the majesty of the surroundings, painting a serene and almost surreal picture. Waterfalls cascade down the cliffs, especially after rainfall, tumbling in graceful, gravity-defying ribbons into the fiord below.

Surrounding the fiord, dense rainforests thrive in the subtropical climate, with ancient trees clinging to the cliffs, their roots gripping the rock faces. As the sun breaks through the clouds, the changing light transforms the landscape – shadows dance across the mountains, and the water takes on a deeper, almost mystical hue. Whether seen the deck of a boat or from the hiking trails, Milford Sound’s views are an unforgettable reminder of the raw, untouched beauty that defines New Zealand’s natural heritage.

Table Mountain is approximately 600 million years old, making it one of the world’s oldest mountains!

Table Mountain, South Africa

Rising majestically above Cape Town, Table Mountain offers one of the most instantly recognisable views in the world. From its summit, the sprawling city below seems almost miniature, framed by the sparkling blue of the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding rugged coastline. The sheer cliffs of the mountain stand in stark contrast to the vibrant city, creating a striking scene that seems to capture the essence of both urban life and raw nature.

Travellers can ascend Table Mountain by cable car or hike the well-worn paths, and enjoy an ever-evolving view with every step. The dense fynbos vegetation that clings to the slopes gives way to dramatic rock formations, while panoramic vistas unfold, revealing far-off beaches, lush valleys and neighbouring mountains. The soft light of dawn or the golden glow of sunset transforms the landscape into a living painting, with colours shifting from warm golds to cool, dusky shades.

From the very summit, the sight of Cape Town’s grid of streets, framed by the turquoise waters of Table Bay and the distant peaks of the Cape Peninsula, is nothing short of breathtaking. Whether enveloped in mist or basking in bright sunlight, Table Mountain’s views are a humbling reminder of the beauty and wonder that nature so generously offers.

Christ the Redeemer, Brazil

Towering high above the colourful city of Rio de Janeiro, the view from Christ the Redeemer is nothing short of divine.

The iconic Art Deco statue stands 30 metres tall (excluding its 8-metre pedestal), its arms outstretched 28 metres wide as if embracing the entire city below. Constructed from reinforced concrete with a soapstone veneer, this impressive religious monument is a symbol of hope and peace.

From the summit of Corcovado Mountain, the panorama unfolds in every direction, a breathtaking tapestry of natural beauty and urban charm. To the west, the deep green of Tijuca Forest stretches endlessly, while the horizon opens up to the shimmering expanse of Guanabara Bay, where boats can be seen drifting beneath the tropical sun.

As your eyes sweep across Rio, the city’s world-famous beaches, Copacabana and Ipanema, kiss the azure waters of the Atlantic, their golden sands glowing in the light. The towering Sugarloaf Mountain rises from the sea like a sentinel, adding even more drama to the scene. The vast city, with its colourful buildings and winding streets, feels both hectic and harmonious, perfectly positioned between the green hills and the shimmering ocean.

The air up in the mountain is filled with a sense of calm away from the hustle and bustle of the city, as if the statue itself, standing so serenely, offers solace to the restless world below. From Christ the Redeemer, the world feels both never-ending and intimate, and you can’t help but be humbled by the magnificence of it all.

The Great Wall, China

Voted one of the new ‘Seven Wonders of the World’, the Great Wall of China stretches over 13,000 miles across the rugged landscape like a serpentine dragon, its ancient stones winding through mist-covered mountains, valleys and rolling hills. It’s the longest manmade structure in the world, built over several dynasties, with construction beginning as early as the 7th-century BC. The Great Wall was built from different materials, varying from region to region. In some stretches, it stands resolute, built from enduring brick and stone, while in others, it offers glimpses of nature’s touch, crafted from compacted earth, timber and bamboo. Each region’s materials tell a story, reflecting the resources of the land and the hands that shaped it.

From its watchtowers, the view is both humbling and jaw-dropping. To the north, the vast expanse of wilderness unfurls, endless and untamed, while the wall itself meanders across the ridges, disappearing into the distance. The peaks of the mountains soar steeply, their ragged edges softened by the morning mist, creating a sense of mystery and wonder.

As the sun casts its first golden light over the horizon, the wall seems to glow, casting long shadows across the hills and valleys. The sight is a perfect fusion of human determination and nature’s raw beauty. Built to protect and define, the wall now serves as a bridge between past and present, a reminder of a time when empires rose and fell.

Looking out from the Great Wall, there’s a profound sense of connection – to history, to the land and to the countless souls who walked this path long before. The views are not just scenic; they are timeless, filled with the echoes of centuries gone by.

Petra, Jordan

Hidden deep within Jordan’s desert, the ancient rose-red city of Petra unveils itself like a forgotten dream. As you enter through the narrow Siq, a winding gorge flanked by towering cliffs, the air hangs heavy with history. The sunlight filters through the canyon’s narrow walls, casting a warm, golden glow on the sandstone that seems to pulse with life.

As you emerge from the Siq, the grand Treasury (Al-Khazneh) appears before you, its intricately carved façade glowing in the light – a masterpiece of ancient Nabatean architecture, standing proud against the desert backdrop. The sweeping landscape stretches beyond, an immense expanse of pink-hued rock formations, columns and tombs that show traces of a civilisation long past.

From the heights of the Monastery, the view is even more breathtaking, offering a panoramic sweep of Petra’s hidden wonders. The dramatic terrain, dotted with ancient structures carved directly into the rock, creates a surreal landscape –timeless and untouched by the world outside. The calmness of this ancient city, cradled in the embrace of the desert, fills you with a sense of awe. More than a destination, Petra is a journey through time, where every stone reveals a story of mystery, majesty and endurance.

Meet the team

Time at Riviera:

I have been with Riviera for 6 years now, having started in 2018, working in the Contact Centre as part of our Sales Team.

Riviera role:

My role within the Sales Team involves booking holidays for our lovely guests on the telephone, answering their questions and queries to help book the best packaged tour or cruise. As a more experienced member, I have represented the Sales Team at the Destinations Holiday and Travel Show in Manchester and London for the past two years. More recently in March, I was lucky enough to experience all four of our first ever 3-night Discovery Cruises on the Seine and the Rhine rivers, where I delivered a short sales presentation to our lovely guests, many of whom were brand new to Riviera.

Favourite Riviera holiday:

Well, there are so many to choose from during my amazing time here at Riviera, having been fortunate enough to enjoy seven different itineraries. If I had to pick one, it would be the Imperial Cities of Morocco tour in November 2022, which took in Marrakesh, Casablanca, Rabat and Fez. It was such a contrast to see the Jemaa el-Fnaa main square in Marrakesh, from the bustling market stalls in the daytime to the street food and performances that take over at night time. What made the tour most memorable though was our fabulous Tour Manager, Adrian Jackson, whose knowledge and passion for the country, as well as his great sense of humour made this educational tour my favourite.

Number one destination:

I have not yet visited continents such as Asia, Australasia and South America so all of these are on my bucket list! One of my dreams has always been to take a long, extended road trip across the US states, though perhaps in later life with a few savings behind me! But my “home away from home” and true favourite destination is Brixham, Devon. My favourite place in the world is this little beach cove along the coast, where I have spent countless hours watching the ships on the horizon.

With each edition of Discover magazine, we’re excited to introduce more of the travel-loving team behind the scenes.

While you might know our friendly sales team or have met our Riviera Tour Manager or Cruise Director on holiday, there’s a whole squad of us based in Burton-upon-Trent, working quietly (but passionately) to make sure every detail of your trip runs smoothly – from your first enquiry to your journey home.

Holiday essential:

As generic as it may seem, my smartphone of course! Not only to capture photos for the memories, but it’s great for the maps app, which of course is available everywhere in the world, and to have Google and Translate at my fingertips. Most places nowadays have contactless payment too, which we can use our phones for.

Time at Riviera:

I’ve been here for just over a year, but it feels like a long time now. I’m loving the culture, people and ambition of the business. I’m excited to be part of such a fabulous company.

Riviera role:

As Head of Digital and E-Commerce, my team manages all three websites across the UK, US, and Ireland. We focus on cost-effective new customer acquisition and delivering optimal online journeys for both new and existing customers. Our efforts support digital sales and lead generation.

Our team spans website development, design and conversion rate optimisation. We are constantly working to improve the quality and availability of information on the website so our customers can find the information they are looking for quickly and easily, and then go on to book their next Riviera holiday online.

Favourite Riviera holiday:

I have only been on the Riviera South Africa tour so far, but outside of Riviera, probably Vietnam is my overall favourite. I went 20 years ago on a privately booked independent tour from Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi. I found the culture, people, food and overall experience fantastic, and one I often recall fondly.

My next holiday has to be Borneo, I contribute to many wildlife charities and the orangutans in particular stole my heart many years ago. A recent netball injury has meant I’ve been unable to take the eight holidays a year I usually enjoy – I’ve already missed two this year, so I have a lot of catching up to do!

Holiday essential:

A big suitcase – the bigger, the better! I’m not a light packer; I love clothes, shoes and options, so I’m awful at cutting out what I don’t need. I need enough space to bring back some memories of my trip. In South Africa, I bought a lot of cushion covers, jewellery and souvenirs. I love to have something to remind me of my time away!

Time at Riviera:

I will have been with Riviera Travel for 16 years this coming summer. I joined after working overseas for a large tour operator and progressed within the product department.

Riviera role:

I am the Head of European Product, so the team and I are responsible for creating new European tours and concepts to ensure that we always have a great choice of holiday destinations available for our guests. We are constantly evolving our existing holidays by adding new visits and hotels. We also work closely with our partners to improve the overall quality and service that they provide to ensure everyone has an excellent holiday. There is a lot more that we do, but in a nutshell, this is our main priority!

Favourite Riviera holiday:

My first experience of a Riviera holiday was on beautiful Lake Maggiore at the Regina Palace hotel, a gorgeous hotel in a stunning setting. We had a very experienced and knowledgeable tour manager, who made sure everyone was well looked after. I particularly enjoyed the visit to the Borromean islands on a little private boat over to Isola Bella to visit the palace and gardens, as well as neighbouring Lake Orta.

Number one destination:

The whole of Italy is number one for me, from the north to the south! I love all the Italian Lakes, as well as Sardinia and Puglia – they are all very different and have their unique cuisine, landscapes and history. I love the Italian lifestyle, climate, food and, of course, the deep-red wines of Puglia.

Holiday essential:

My mobile phone for making sure I take photos to capture the memories and can stay in touch with my family and friends. Plus, a good book and sunscreen.
