Our Tour Managers, Cruise Directors and Concierges are for many of our guests, the face of Riviera and they play a vital role in the success of all our holidays. They can be the only members of the Riviera team that our guests come into contact with, and we know just how important it is to recruit and nurture the very best people to lead all our tours and cruises. We talked to our Head of Tour Management, Sharon, about what led her into the industry and why she decided to bring her passion for travel and people, to Riviera.
How did your career in travel begin?
Following many years in the hotel industry, I moved to a business travel and events company. After nearly a decade in business travel I moved to work with a tour operator and have now worked in the travel industry for over 14 years! My love for travel started when I was young, inspired by my aunties – one who worked as cabin crew and another on cruise liners. They would bring back stories and souvenirs from all over the world, which sparked my passion for travel.
What brought you to Riviera?
Riviera, as a leading tour operator, was the perfect fit for me. With my experience working alongside Tour Managers and building support teams, joining Riviera felt like a dream come true. I was thrilled that my skills aligned so well with what Riviera needed – lucky me!
Tell us about your most memorable moments please!
My first trip to New York was one of my most memorable travel experiences, I had waited a long time and took my son for his 16th birthday, the drive from the airport to downtown was breath-taking seeing the skyline that is so familiar come into view in real life was brilliant.
We had an absolute blast, did all the tourist things and went to see a New York Knicks game, fabulous! My son loved it so much he subsequently lived out there for a couple of summers.
What do you think you’ve learnt from your time at Riviera?
What a truly great culture we have, everyone working together to ensure our guests have the best holiday experience, the guest is at the heart of what we do. We also offer some amazing itineraries and the constant drive to introduce new and exciting holidays is something that really stands out.
season, we also start our sourcing for additional Tour Managers, Cruise Directors and Cruise Concierge ready for our next season.
What are your own holiday plans this year/next?
Next year, I’m hoping to do another river cruise – this time along the Douro. It’s something I’ve been looking forward to! Over the next few years India, an African Safari and Australia are on the bucket list, better get saving!
If you were marooned on a desert island, who would you like with you and why?
I’d have to bring Mr. Smith! We’ve travelled a lot together, and he’s quite resourceful, so I’m sure he’d be able to build us a great shelter. If he’s unavailable, Bear Grylls would be my next choice – he’d definitely know how to survive!
Human history is our map of the past, a tangled tale – complicated, unpredictable, but with plenty of unforgettable chapters. Luckily, it’s left behind some spectacular landmarks as proof of all that drama. From towering pyramids to ancient cliff-carved cities that defy logic,
the world is a treasure trove of human achievement and ambition. Every continent holds a piece of the puzzle, with stories etched in stone, brick, and marble, whispering not just tales of grand kings, pharaohs, and emperors, but also of the everyday people who quietly shaped the world in their own way.
No historical tour would be complete without a stop at Giza’s Pyramids. Ancient Egypt’s most iconic structures, these monolithic tombs have intrigued travellers for millennia. It’s astonishing how these massive blocks were stacked with such precision without the help of modern machinery. As you stand before the Great Pyramid, marvel at the ingenuity it took to build something that would endure so many thousands
of years! And, of course, don’t miss the slightly bemused-looking Sphinx, another of the world’s greatest wonders.

Set high in the Peruvian Andes, Machu Picchu is the most legendary of the planet’s ‘lost cities’. Built by the Incas in the 15th century, this citadel remains shrouded in mystery. No one really knows its exact purpose, but the dramatic mountain views and intricate stonework are more than enough to enjoy. As you hike up (or take the train!), you can’t help but be impressed by the effort it must have taken to build such an impressive site so far above sea level. The view is simply out of this world.

Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world, and it has a fascinating story to match. Originally constructed as a Hindu temple in the 12th century, it gradually became a Buddhist site, making it an enduring symbol of Cambodia’s cultural history. Visiting Angkor Wat feels like stepping into another world, where the jungle is slowly reclaiming the ancient stone structures. The vast temple complex is best explored at sunrise, when the first light glimmers off the moat; the sight of the temple’s reflection in the water is nothing short of magical.

Few places on Earth allow you to step so directly into the past as Rome’s Colosseum. This vast amphitheatre was the ultimate venue for ancient Roman entertainment, where gladiators fought for glory and crowds cheered for blood. Today, the games may be over, but the spectacle remains. Walking through the arches of this iconic structure, it’s hard not to imagine the roar of 50,000 spectators in this greatest of historic arenas.

Athens is a city that wears its history proudly, none more so than at the Acropolis. Towering above the modern city, this ancient citadel is crowned by the Parthenon, a temple dedicated to Athena, goddess of wisdom. Walking up the slopes of the Acropolis, you get a sense of the sheer scale of Greek ambition; this is no humble ruin but a complex of temples and theatres that still impresses even in its faded glory. As you marvel at the views over Athens, take time to imagine what an incredible place this was 2,500 years ago, bustling with philosophers, artists, and statesmen.

In the heart of Granada, the Alhambra stands as a testament to the golden age of Moorish rule in Spain. This palace-fortress complex is an architectural masterpiece, with intricate Islamic designs and fragrant garden oases that transport you back to a time when this was one of the most sophisticated courts in Europe. Wandering through its halls, you can still sense the perfect blend of power and serenity that defined this era. The gardens are particularly spectacular, and while it’s tempting to linger there forever, the intricate tile work and ornate arches are what truly steal the show.
If you’re one for dramatic views and long walks, the Great Wall of China should be on your list. Stretching over 13,000 miles, this ancient defensive barrier was once designed to protect against invasions. Today, it’s a symbol of China’s rich history and one of the most visited sites in the world. The sections closest to Beijing are well-preserved and accessible, but they do get crowded, so it’s worth
More modern than most historical sites, the Sydney Opera House is an architectural marvel that has earned its place on the world stage. Completed in 1973, it has become an enduring symbol of Australia, and its stunning sail-like design makes it one of the most recognisable buildings in the world. It’s not just about appearances though, the Opera House is a hub of cultural life in Sydney, hosting everything from world-class operas to contemporary music performances. Be sure to explore the surrounding harbour area as well, as it offers equally fantastic views of the city skyline.

The Eiffel Tower may not seem as ancient as some of the other sites on this list, but it’s certainly an icon of France’s industrial era and has become a symbol of Parisian elegance. Built for the 1889 World’s Fair, the tower was initially met with scepticism and many Parisians thought it an eyesore. Fast forward more than a century, and it’s now the most visited paid monument on the planet. Whether you choose to climb the stairs or take the lift, the heart-stopping view over Europe’s capital of romance is sure to set your pulse racing.

Few monuments have witnessed as much history as the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. Originally commissioned by King Frederick William II in the late 18th century, this neoclassical gate has seen everything from Napoleonic invasions to the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall. It’s a symbol of both division and reunification, and today it stands proudly as a reminder of Germany’s turbulent 20th century. Walking through the Gate, you can almost feel the weight of history in the air, though it’s now a place of celebration and reflection rather than conflict.

Off the coast of Cape Town lies Robben Island, a place that, despite its stunning surroundings, carries a sombre and powerful history. For nearly 400 years, Robben Island was used as a place of isolation, where political prisoners and outcasts were sent, most famously, Nelson Mandela, who spent 18 of his 27 years of imprisonment here during South Africa’s apartheid era. Today, the island is a symbol of the triumph of the human spirit and the country’s long struggle for freedom and equality. The prison is now a museum, where former prisoners often serve as guides, sharing firsthand stories of resilience and endurance. It’s a historic visit that will leave you both humbled and inspired.

The Mekong Delta offers a different kind of historical experience, one that’s more about culture and daily life than grand monuments. Cruising along the winding rivers, you can witness the living history of Vietnam as it unfolds in bustling floating markets, traditional stilt houses, and serene pagodas. The Delta has been a hub of civilisation for centuries, with ancient trading routes and agricultural practices that have shaped the landscape. It’s a peaceful yet vibrant reminder of how history lives on through the rhythms of simple everyday life.

All these historic landmarks are more than just tourist attractions; every stone, every fresco and every towering spire speaks of a world far removed, yet somehow eternally connected to our own. Visiting these places is like holding a magnifying glass to the past, seeing the grandeur, mystery, and fragility of civilisations from long ago. Whether you’re trekking up to a hidden mountain city or wandering through an opulent palace, these sites remind us that history, for all its complexities, remains our most enduring legacy. l

Start your day with a visit to the incredible Fushimi Inari Shrine, dedicated to the Shinto rice god Inari. Thousands of vermillion gates line the trails around sacred Mount Inari, making it a sight to behold. It’s no surprise the shrine is Kyoto’s most visited spot, so getting here early affords a peaceful walk without the crowds. The hike to the summit takes a few hours, but visitors can go as far as they wish before turning back, and the famous senbon torii or ‘thousand gates’ are located at the start of the trail. Look out for the many fox statues representing Inari’s messengers. Halfway up the mountain is the Yotsutsuji intersection, where superb views of the city can be enjoyed.
Another highlight worth an early visit is Kiyomizudera, one of Japan’s most celebrated temples. Founded in 780 in wooded hills, it’s best-known for its 13-metre-tall wooden stage projecting from its main hall. Here, you can take in sweeping views of Kyoto in the distance beyond the sea of cherry and maple trees below.
Kiyomizudera is located in the historic Higashiyama District, so after your visit, why not have lunch at one of the many restaurants in this charming area? You’ll feel as if you’ve been transported back in time, as old Kyoto truly comes alive here through the narrow lanes, centuries-old buildings and traditional shops. Pick up some local specialities, such as sweets, crafts and pottery, to take home. Many gems can also be found in Higashiyama, including the iconic Yasaka Pagoda and lovely Maruyama Park, the city’s most popular spot for cherry blossom viewing.
Kyoto Prefecture is home to Japan’s oldest and most renowned tea-growing region, Uji, so those who enjoy a cuppa might wish to sample some of the world’s finest teas at one of Kyoto’s many excellent teahouses.
If you’re hoping to spot graceful geisha scurrying between appointments, head to the geisha district of Gion. Soak up the atmosphere at the marvellously preserved Hanamikoji street, lined with teahouses and wooden merchant homes. At the end of the road is Kenninji,
ranked third among the five great Zen temples of Kyoto and its oldest. Enjoy a peaceful stroll through the Zen garden here and admire the beautiful buildings adorned with intricate artwork.

This evening, you might wish to experience kaiseki – Japanese haute cuisine –which Kyoto is renowned for. This style of fine dining serves up highly seasonal and rarefied ingredients in small dishes served course by course.
Walk off a sumptuous dinner at a seasonal ‘light-up’ event, held at various temples across the city, usually in spring and autumn. We recommend Kodaiji, an outstanding Zen temple rendered even more magical by nighttime illuminations. Experience its lavishly decorated interiors, sublime gardens and atmospheric bamboo grove – a wonderful end to an unforgettable day. l
Imagine a floating boutique hotel gently meandering past verdant vineyards, clifftop castles and quaint villages that look like they’ve leapt straight off the pages of a fairy tale. What could be better than a relaxing river cruise along Europe’s waterways? The answer is, of course, a longerlength river cruise, and we mean itineraries upwards of a week.
If you’ve ever been on a river cruise and wished it didn’t have to end so quickly, there’s always the option of a longer-length journey. You’ll have the luxury of time to not just dip your toes into European culture, but to relish it like a well-heeled aristocrat. You need to unpack only once, then you can relax and enjoy the ride as your home for the next few weeks sails smoothly from one picturesque port to the next. The only difference is you might need to pack a slightly larger collection of clothes and shoes – a small price to pay, we’re sure!
More time on board means more time to enjoy all the amenities of your five-star ship. Stretch out on a sun lounger with your latest read while our friendly crew tops up your tipple – they’ve memorised your favourites by now – and if it gets too warm, cool off with a dip in the splash pool. Some ships like our brand-new MS Radiance have multiple restaurants, so you can truly savour the menus. Work off those extra helpings at the fitness centre or indulge further in some pamper sessions at the spa – all on board.
And last but certainly not least, let’s not forget the opportunities for cultural immersion. Longer voyages afford you more time to delve deeper into the region’s history and traditions. Sample more local wines, visit another worldclass museum or art gallery, or even try to master a few phrases in an unfamiliar language! The longer you stay, the more time you get to make incredible memories you’ll treasure forever. So why settle for a fleeting glance when you can enjoy a panoramic view?
While our classic river cruises are 8 days, we also offer different ways to extend your holiday: Make it epic...
Unwind for longer with a river cruise that combines two of our superb itineraries. For a truly epic odyssey, try our Grand Cruise through the Heart of Europe to the Black Sea, a 29-day adventure that takes you on the mighty Danube through 8 countries from Cologne in Germany to the Black Sea.

In our previous issue of Discover, we promised an update on the project with our charity partner, Practical Action, to tackle plastic and waste pollution in Kisumu, Kenya. We raised £2,312 for the project through our ‘Riviera Races to Kisumu’ challenge, where we walked, ran, cycled and swam a total of 12,680 miles to cover the distance to Kisumu and back! But you, our guests, have raised a staggering £88,000 so far this year simply by booking with us as we donate £1 for every passenger that books with us. Belle, Rob and Will from Riviera flew out to Kenya in July to catch up with the team based there. This is their story.
The Riviera trio spent the first day at Practical Action’s main office in Nairobi with the passionate and knowledgeable team, discussing their work so far, getting fascinating insights into the project and coming up with more ideas for the future.
Our inspired trio then travelled over 200 miles to Kisumu to join the Practical Action team based there. Rubbish and sewage, including plastic waste, are emptied into the Auji river every day, damaging natural ecosystems, posing serious health risks to the locals, and affecting the local economy, especially fish and horticultural farming. The waste in the Auji river eventually flows into Lake Victoria, the second-largest freshwater
lake in the world, which impacts not only Kenya but also Tanzania and Uganda, making it a regional issue with wide-reaching consequences.
A critical part of the project is working with the community, demonstrating the importance of keeping the environment clean, and showing how this can be achieved. Belle, Rob and Will worked with the Practical Action team, local community, informal waste handling groups, county government and Kisumu City Department of Environment employees to clear a section of the river Auji.
Practical Action is focused on education, training and establishing local partnerships to improve practices and prevent further dumping. One example is their work in schools in Kisumu to educate children about waste management.
This initiative seeks to communicate the important message to young people and their families, with the hope that future generations will adopt better waste management practices and reduce the strain on the local environment.
A highlight of the trip was their visit to Kit Mikayi, an astonishing natural
rock formation that holds significant spiritual and cultural importance for the local community. Ceremonial bamboo trees were planted on the banks of the Auji river – three of the trees symbolise the growth of our partnership with Practical Action over the coming years.
On the final day of the trip, our team explored various parts of the Auji river along its flow from the Mamboleo area to Lake Victoria, and learned about the natural filtration system through the reeds that grow in the area as the Auji river gets into Lake Victoria. For our team, the entire experience was a powerful one they will never forget. l

Our special team of talented TMs (Tour Managers) are absolutely instrumental to our holidays. Some view the role as a permanent holiday – jetting off to beautiful places, staying in lovely hotels and trying delicious cuisine – but there’s so much that happens beneath the surface. We go behind the scenes with two of our brilliant TMs, Adrian and Karen, to find out more.
Adrian, who leads many of our Sri Lanka and Florence & Tuscany tours, likens every Riviera holiday to ‘a stage show’, where everyone goes to great lengths to ‘ensure guests receive the best experience’, which our TMs work tirelessly to deliver. Karen, who you will often find managing our South Africa tour, as well as our Tall Ship cruises, agrees, adding that ‘organisation and logistics are at the heart of what we do’. Days and even weeks before a departure, they pore through every detail with a fine-tooth comb, from transfers and coach seating to dietary needs and toilet locations, and the meticulous attention to detail continues throughout the trip.
Thinking 10 steps ahead to anticipate needs is vital, and being armed with all the necessary – and extra – information allows our TMs to assist guests with almost anything, even where to find the nearest optician, as a common issue guests face is loose screws escaping from spectacles! ‘I now carry a repair kit with all the screws needed,’ shares Adrian – a testament to our TMs’ great foresight (pun intended).
Giving personal attention is also very important, says Karen. If I’m on the same flight as my guests, I always welcome them at the boarding gate.’ During coach travel Riviera encourages seat rotation, which she thinks is a great way to create a relaxed
atmosphere, as it gives guests a chance to meet different people. ‘I like to design personal cards with their names on and move these around the coach each day. They can keep these as a souvenir at the end. Karen and Adrian agree that visibility is key, so our TMs make sure they’re always available and easily contactable.
I am always in breakfast early and in the bar area of the hotel around the time our guests like to go for a predinner drink. The latter is an especially good time to get to know everyone better,’ she says.
Breakfast is a time when many guests ask questions about the day ahead,’ reveals Adrian. On an itinerary free day, our TMs usually have maps and printouts prepared with suggestions of places to visit and things to do.
It’s important I have a deep knowledge of a destination. I like to feel confident I can answer any question and, if one catches me out, I know where I can find the answer – and I’m not referring to Google!
For both Adrian and Karen, their love for a destination and sharing that enthusiasm with guests are what they enjoy most about being a TM.
I want my passion and love of a destination to be felt by everyone,’ says Adrian.
Karen echoes, ‘Although I have been a tour manager and cruise director for nearly 40 years, I never tire of the thrill of seeing our lovely guests have an exceptional experience when they come on a trip with me. Of course, my job is hugely helped by the quality and value of Riviera’s holidays, so I already feel confident that what’s been designed will surprise and delight guests.
When asked what advice they would give guests to help them make the most of their Riviera holiday, Karen replied,
Be in the moment. Don’t look too far ahead or your holiday might fly past quickly.’
Great tip! Leave the thinking ahead and preparation to our TMs. If our holidays are a ‘stage show’ as Adrian puts it, then our TMs are top-tier stage managers working painstakingly and discreetly to make every performance a five-star success. l
The celebrated ‘City of Light’ excels at captivating visitors with its melange of historical grandeur, artistic marvels and mouthwatering cuisine. Paris’ iconic landmarks, from the instantly recognisable Eiffel Tower to the splendid Notre-Dame Cathedral, are not just symbols of Paris but embodiments of its rich history and proud heritage.
Exploring Paris is like walking through an open-air museum. The Louvre, home to thousands of works of art including the Mona Lisa, offers an artistic experience few places can rival. Similarly, the Musée d'Orsay, housed in a former railway station, features an impressive collection of Impressionist masterpieces. Whether you’re an art lover or not, the Rodin Museum boasts some of the finest sculptures and glorious gardens.
The French capital city is renowned for its culinary gems – and rightly so. All over the city you’ll find bustling
restaurants, charming bistros and chic cafés serving up delicious delights made to perfection: exquisite confectionery, buttery pastries and gourmet menus to please just about any palate.
The many Parisian neighbourhoods all have their own unique character, adding to the city’s appeal and making exploring a great pleasure. A stroll through village-like Montmartre reveals a bohemian charm with its quaint cobbled streets and artistic history, while trendy Le Marais owes much of its attraction to its superb architecture, fascinating heritage and quirky boutiques – a challenge to imagine this was once marshland!
If you like your green spaces, the fabulous Luxembourg Gardens and the Tuileries offer serene escapes from the urban hustle. A walk along the famous Seine River, with its picturesque bridges and romantic boat cruises, is a lovely way to take in the city.

hey say life begins at 40, and with so much going on during our special anniversary year – and with so much more to come (rest assured we’ll keep you posted), we’re feeling revitalised and raring to enter our new decade. There’s been plenty of highlights so far, including our fantastic 40th birthday giveaway – congratulations if you were one of the lucky winners of one of our star prizes, and we’re delighted that so many of you have used your Golden Tickets to book with us again. We can’t wait to see you.
But enough about us, we know you’ve been busy celebrating too, and we’ve loved hearing about your milestone birthdays, your anniversaries to be proud of, or just your extra-special travel treats, enjoyed with friends and family to mark some of the biggest and most momentous of life’s events. From eagerly awaited retirements to new chapters, 2024 has been quite a year.
At the very start of 2024 we were delighted to hear the most wonderful news of the engagement and wedding plans of two of our guests, Mari and Neil. I’m sure they won’t mind us telling you, that being at the younger end of the usual Riviera demographic, we were all tremendously excited by
this serendipitous holiday romance. Riviera has seen a few marriages along the way in its 40 year history, but I think we can safely say, Mari and Neil are our youngest pairing yet!
Mari’s mum, Helen, wrote to us to tell us of their wedding plans and shared the story of their meeting:
In August 2018, my family holidayed with Riviera for the first time, on the South Africa tour. I travelled with my husband and daughter. My daughter, Mari, aged 20 at the time, was advised she was likely to be the youngest on the trip, as Riviera tours usually attract an older demographic. On arriving in Johannesburg O.R. Tambo
airport, we were pleased to see other younger guests on the same trip, twin boys also aged 20. Aside from other young members, our tour group in general was very interactive and our tour manager and guide, Sylvia, from Glasgow and Alan from Simon’s Town, South Africa, were fun, very knowledgeable and caring.
It was a special holiday for many reasons. The first, that my husband and I celebrated our 31st wedding anniversary while abroad. Together, my daughter, Sylvia and Alan, arranged for a cake to be made to celebrate and the whole group signed an anniversary card, which I still have as a souvenir. Secondly, during the trip, we got to know other guests and my daughter, in particular spoke to the twin boys, Neil and Ian. Neil and Mari got along very well, such that they kept in touch when we returned from the holiday. Despite a 250-mile distance from Mari’s home in Swansea to Neil’s in York, their friendship grew closer and closer. A year later they became a couple and in September 2022 they became engaged.

On the 7th September 2024, they got married and enjoyed a honeymoon in South Africa, staying in the Southern Sun Waterfront Hotel, the last place they socialised together on their original Riviera holiday to South Africa back in 2018. They were also fortunate enough to be reunited with Sylvia!
Congratulations Mari and Neil! Riviera wishes you both every happiness and thank you for sharing your wonderful story with us all!
This happy tale is just one of many celebrations we’ve enjoyed hearing about throughout the year, and here’s just some of the lovely messages we’ve had:

The thought of travelling solo might be a little daunting if it’s not something you’ve ever considered before, but more and more of us are embracing this wonderfully exhilarating and exciting way to see the world. We caught up with one of our guests, Alison, to find out why she has discovered one of travel’s best kept secrets and why once you have, you’ll be hooked!
What initially inspired you to start travelling solo, and how did that first trip shape your perspective on it?
I decided to travel solo 6 months after losing my husband to pancreatic cancer. We’d been together 40 years and always holidayed together. I had only just taken early retirement, and we had lots of exciting travel plans with a threeyear bucket list of travel scheduled. Sadly, I had to cancel all those bookings during his short illness two years ago.
My objective for my first solo trip was to lose myself in epic scenery somewhere we hadn’t been before. I decided to go to Canada, ride the Rocky Mountaineer and cruise to Alaska with Riviera on an escorted tour. It was an incredible experience; I was one of 37 on that trip and the only solo traveller. The Tour Manager made me feel very safe and she and the other guests proved great company and made me feel confident about my decision to travel on my own again.
What would you say are the biggest misconceptions people have about solo travel, and how have you found the reality?
Solo travel can be enormous fun and very rewarding. The age range of solo travellers is quite wide.
On my second trip – a river cruise from Porto along the Douro – there were 12 solo guests. You certainly don’t have to be on your own if you don’t want to be and I prefer not to just do the solo exclusive trips. In my experience over the last 18 months, lots of couples and friends/family travelling together are very kind and invite you to have a drink or dine and chat with them as well as singles.

Many people worry that travelling solo will be lonely. What would you tell them? For people who love companionship and social interaction, what are some strategies for balancing solitude with meeting new people while travelling solo?
I met a fellow solo traveller celebrating her 60th birthday on the Portuguese river cruise and we’ve become great friends ever since! In fact, we’ve taken four holidays together this year and have more planned in future. Whilst we were on a French river cruise this summer, several people came up to us and remembered us from the Douro last year! I’ve heard many similar stories and experiences from other solo travellers who’ve met new friends and ‘travel buddies’ on previous holidays.
you to join in the quiz or other activities if you want – and are always on hand to provide added reassurance and security and someone to talk to if you prefer to stay on your own.
What are the key benefits of solo travel that you think people don’t fully appreciate until they experience it?
The key benefits of solo travel for me is you can do whatever you want to, whenever you want to! You don’t have to think of anyone else and you set your own agenda and pace, joining in as much, or as little, as you want.
Safety is often a concern for potential solo travellers, especially women. What advice would you give for staying safe while travelling alone?
I was nervous about travelling on my own but having done quite a few trips now, I love the variety and itineraries Riviera offers in Europe and around the world and feel completely safe travelling with them.
I like to make sure I ask the Tour Manager or Cruise Director advice about the places I’d like to explore in my free time and let them know where I’m going and when. I keep their mobile number in my phone and follow any security warnings or places to avoid.

Travelling solo on river cruises or escorted tours is easy and very flexible to either be on your own or mix with others. The Tour Managers and Cruise Directors and concierges are very good at encouraging
How does travelling solo change the way you experience new cultures and destinations compared to travelling with friends or family?
I think travelling solo can be very exciting and varied as you meet and travel with different people on every trip. I think I’ve become more independent and adventurous with my choices. There is no compromise as to where I want to go and when! You can be more impulsive and flexible and can try more new things maybe your friends or family aren’t keen to do. I’ve always been curious and now have the flexibility to do more on my own with the help of the tour schedules and different fellow guests who introduce you to new perspectives and share their travel experiences and recommendations.
What would you say to someone who is hesitant to travel alone because they’re unsure about handling logistics or unexpected problems?
The best thing about the river cruises and organised land tours is you are never on your own if anything goes wrong or you’re concerned about the logistics whilst away. The expert handling of luggage on big trips between locations and daily checking in is very impressive, reassuring but not overtly ‘controlling’ or restrictive.
Are there any moments from your solo travels that stand out as especially rewarding or transformative, and why?
On my first solo trip, I did several ‘firsts’ including going on a very small research boat and had the most remarkable and memorable experience watching pods of orcas and humpback whales’ babble fishing up close with just 15 others. I loved husky sledging too. You need never be bored on a Riviera holiday!
The journey down the Douro was breathtaking and unbelievably peaceful and beautiful and seeing the country from the river was a totally new experience and perspective, as was the Gold Leaf experience on the Rocky Mountaineer train from Jasper to Vancouver. The Timeless Provence trip was stunning too and we packed in so much in just a week without it feeling too rushed and had time to explore on your own.

What’s the one piece of advice you wish you had been given before your first solo trip that might help someone else take the plunge?
Seize the moment and don’t delay! Don’t over think, anticipate potential concerns or worry too much – take every day one day at a time, be in the moment and open to enjoy every precious moment!
How do you decide where to go next?
After losing my husband, I didn’t want to go back to anywhere we’d been before. So, I looked for new places and things to do we hadn’t done as a couple in the short term. This Christmas I will be cruising the Caribbean solo which had been cancelled twice. I recently did a cruise from Athens to Barcelona with my friend I met on the Douro which was enormous fun!
I’m now confident to go anywhere and do anything – especially with cruises for the entertainment and organised tours for destinations further afield. I’ve also done several city breaks too.
How has solo travel influenced the way you view your home and your sense of belonging?
I care for my mum who’s 95 with Alzheimer’s. In future, I’m looking to downsize my home and increase my travel budget to adventure far and wide once I can. The joy of travel is priceless!
What’s your go-to ritual or habit when you first arrive in a new city or country?
If I’m doing an independent or city tour, I take an open top bus ride to orientate myself and help prioritise things I want to do. If I’m on an organised tour or cruise I do lots of research ahead of arriving – especially checking out the best beaches, places to eat and other places of interest to visit in any free time.
I’m also not frightened to ask questions or for advice if I’m unsure of anything. I didn’t think I would be able to laugh and dance so much travelling alone and meet so many lovely people!
What’s the most remote or offthe-beaten-path destination you’ve visited on your own, and what drew you there?
Probably Alaskan whale-watching on a very small research boat. I didn’t want to be on the typical large tour boat, and it was a truly remarkable, thrilling one-off experience. I learnt loads about the wildlife and area on that trip and we were able to be much more flexible and follow the more interesting sightings further away from the masses and larger boats.
If you could give your past self one piece of advice before you embarked on your first solo trip, what would it be?
Continue to be forever curious, dream big and don’t fear the unknown. You’re braver and more adventurous than you ever dreamed possible, and you can try and do anything you want to!

Let’s be honest, cake isn’t just dessert. It’s a universal sign of celebration, indulgence, and, in some cases, a well-deserved reward when you simply want to spoil yourself at the end of a long day. While the basics – flour, sugar, eggs, and butter – often remain constants, cultural traditions, local ingredients, and techniques give cakes their distinctive character from country to country. But cakes go beyond the ubiquitous birthday sponge; each country brings its own unique twist to the world of cake, and what better way to explore global culture than through layers of buttercream and chocolate ganache! From refined French pâtisserie to Indian aromatic spiced cakes, these sweet treats are a delicious window into the world’s culinary traditions, so let us take you on the sweetest journey around the globe as we explore some of the world’s most famous bakes.
Italy’s Torta Caprese is a flourless chocolate cake originating from the island of Capri. Made simply with almond meal, butter, eggs, sugar, and dark chocolate, this cake is a dream for lovers of the rich combination of chocolate and almonds. With its crisp exterior and moist, dense interior, Torta Caprese is often dusted with icing sugar and served with a scoop of gelato or whipped cream. Glutenfree, its origins are said to be the result of a happy culinary accident, when a baker forgot to add flour to the mix, creating the luscious texture that we know today. When it comes to this cake, less is definitely more.

You can’t talk about cake without paying homage to Austria's iconic Sachertorte. This chocolatey apricot wonder has been wowing cake lovers since 1832, when Franz Sacher first whipped it up for Prince Metternich. The dense chocolate sponge is subtly sweetened with a layer of apricot jam, then covered in a shiny, dark chocolate glaze. Traditionally served with whipped cream, the Sachertorte is a symbol of Vienna’s refined café culture and is still served at the renowned Hotel Sacher, where its secret recipe is fiercely guarded. One bite and you’ll understand why this Viennese classic has such staying power.

The Pavlova, a light and airy meringuebased dessert, is a source of national pride for New Zealand (and hotly contested by Australia). Named after the Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova, who visited New Zealand in the 1920s, this cloud-like showstopper is known for its crisp crust and soft, marshmallowlike centre. It’s typically topped with cream and fresh kiwifruit, strawberries, or passionfruit. The Pavlova’s lightness and simplicity make it a staple for summer celebrations, (especially around the southern hemisphere’s Christmas) when it’s often seen gracing family tables as a refreshing, fruity dessert.

Japan’s castella cake, known locally as kasutera, is a soft, honey-flavoured sponge cake that was introduced by Portuguese merchants in the 16th century. Over time, it became a staple in Japanese confectionery and a favourite teatime treat, particularly in Nagasaki. Made with simple ingredients – sugar, flour, eggs, and honey, it’s light, fluffy, and subtly sweet, making it the perfect companion to a cup of green tea. What could be more American than apple pie? Well, how about some red velvet sponge. Few cakes make as dramatic an entrance as this sweet treat, with its bold, scarlet hue and thick cream cheese icing. The origins of this American classic are debated, but its popularity skyrocketed in the mid-20th century, when food colouring became more widely available. What started as a slightly tangy, cocoa-flavoured cake has since become a must-have at weddings, birthdays, and any celebration that requires something visually stunning!

Revani, a semolina-based cake soaked in syrup, is a traditional Greek dessert that’s a perfect balance of sweetness and texture. Light, yet satisfyingly dense, thanks to the use of semolina, it’s often flavoured with orange or lemon zest, giving it a fresh, vibrant taste. After baking, the cake is soaked in a fragrant sugar syrup, made with rose water or cinnamon, which deliciously infuses this super-moist sponge. A common sight at Greek festivals and family gatherings, revani is a traditional Greek staple.

Technically more of a custard tart than a cake, but who are we to argue with a pastry that has its own secret recipe locked away in a monastery? The pastel de nata was created by monks in Lisbon’s Jerónimos Monastery; eggs, sugar, and puff pastry – plus a touch of divine inspiration perhaps – created the golden, caramelised masterpiece we know and love. The best place to enjoy these legendary treats is in the Portuguese capital’s Pastéis de Belém, the shop that still uses the original secret recipe. Fair warning, one is never enough.

This dainty shell-shaped sponge was immortalised by the great French writer Marcel Proust in his famous novel ‘In Search of Lost Time’. On biting into a madeleine dipped in tea, a flood of childhood memories comes unexpectedly rushing back – turning the humble madeleine into one of literature’s most famous symbols of memory and nostalgia. Few people know that this classic French snack, made from a simple batter of flour, butter, eggs, sugar, and a hint of lemon zest, in fact has Polish origins. Baked golden-brown with a perfect crisp edge, the real magic of the madeleine is in its simplicity. Feeling French? Dip it into your morning café au lait and enjoy!

Let’s end our cake journey in Eastern Europe with Poland’s beloved sernik. This Polish cheesecake is made with twaróg, a fresh, curd-like cheese that gives it a unique, slightly tangy flavour. Sernik can be baked or unbaked and comes in various forms – sometimes studded with raisins, topped with chocolate icing, or a swirl of fruity jam. As deeply rooted in Polish tradition as the Sunday family dinner, the best place to savour an authentic slice of sernik is in Kraków’s cosy cafes or during the festive Easter season, when Polish families bake this cake to celebrate. l

Our favourite trips throughout the year
As warm hues of gold, amber and russet tint the landscape, it’s clear that autumn is well underway. Some of us might be happy donning cosy knits and staying snug at home, while others prefer a walk in the woods to admire the changing colours. If you asked us, we’d say it’s the perfect time to pick a destination and pack your bags, but then again, we would say that about any season! After all, it could be a freezing winter here but a brilliant summer in the Southern Hemisphere, so there’s always a great time to get up and go.
If the thought of scarlet leaves, balmy weather and harvest festivals sets your heart aflutter, imagine experiencing autumnal allure in another country! Picture yourself strolling through chocolate-box villages, where markets brim with the season’s finest yields. It’s a time for savouring the rewards at food and drink festivals, witnessing traditional bonfires, and observing fascinating local traditions.
Sunshine is still aplenty in many destinations, such as Lake Garda in Italy and Split in Croatia, so you can take your time getting to know each place while staying cool and comfortable. You’ll also notice the summer crowds have thinned, so there’s less jostling with other travellers or craning your neck for better views.
Our holidays are still in full swing in autumn, which means you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to itineraries. Choose a relaxing river cruise in Europe, a glamorous yacht cruise along the sublime Dalmatian Coast, or an expertly guided tour to numerous destinations.
Europe’s chic café culture bursts to life in autumn. A delightful remedy for chilled cheeks is a steaming hot chocolate laced with Austrian rum or Amaretto topped with whipped cream. Perhaps tuck into a spiced Apfelstrudel or a gorgeously constructed Parisian millefeuille – it would be rude not to, we think!
Further abroad, ancient Kyoto is even more exquisite with a sea of majestic maples providing a dramatic backdrop for stunning temples and serene gardens, while the USA’s beautiful national parks are even more breathtaking during this time of year.

As spring arrives and brings a burst of life and colour, one of our favourite things to do this season is to get travelling again, especially if you’ve spent winter at home.
Naturally, a visit to destinations famed for their gardens and parks are a top choice. River cruising is an ideal way to relax and slowly ‘awaken’ with the beautiful landscapes in bloom. How about a cruise on the Seine with a visit to Monet’s Garden to experience the lush greenery and blossoming flowers? For a technicolour explosion of bulbs, we highly recommend a cruise on the Dutch waterways with a visit to Keukenhof. Often cited as the most beautiful spring garden in the world, it’s also one of the largest flower gardens with over 7 million bulbs planted annually.
Of course, you don’t need to be a lover of gardens to travel in spring. With the weather warming up and the days lengthening, countless places are a suitable destination. Best of all, it’s still
Winter’s arrival casts a spell over the world, transforming landscapes into magical wonderlands. Imagine wandering through charming towns dressed in their wintry best, their streets lined with twinkling lights and bustling with kitschy Christmas markets. Riviera’s knowledgeable guides know just where to take you so you can experience winter’s magic at its fullest.
One of our favourite things to do in winter is a festive river cruise on the Rhine or Danube. As you glide along frosty riverbanks, you’ll witness a hushed world where silver-dusted trees and historic towns and villages create a picture-postcard scene. Join in the festive merriment at some of Germany’s best Christmas markets and pick up a trinket or two as a souvenir to brighten up your home.
Warm up icy hands with a mug of piping hot Glühwein, snack on freshly roasted chestnuts and almonds, or fill your belly with some of Germany’s many traditional sausages. The festive feasting continues on board your beautifully decorated five-star ship, where the superb Chef’s Dinner is served.
Craving the heat and prefer a quick return of summer? Consider a journey abroad to somewhere tropical where it’s summer all year round: perhaps a longer-length tour in Southeast Asia, or a captivating river cruise
shoulder season for many countries. Canada, famous for its stunning scenery, is even more captivating in springtime. Or make the most of the milder European weather with an exciting ocean cruise across the Mediterranean.
You could also consider classic European destinations without having to worry about the crowds. Spain’s dramatic Andalusian region, Italy’s wonderful Tuscan countryside and Portugal’s stunning Douro Valley are all excellent choices.

on the Mekong. In Central America, enticing Costa Rica enjoys some of the best weather at the start of the year, and many towns and cities will host carnivals in February. Or if you’ve always fancied a trip to India, the cooler temperatures – still rather summery compared to the great British climate! – make this a more comfortable time to visit this incredible country.

You don’t need many excuses to go on holiday when summer brings sun-kissed days and hours of daylight, perfect for discovering new places or revisiting old favourites. It’s the season for festivals and all kinds of exciting events.
River cruising in summer is simply superb. The long days are great for relaxing on the sun deck with your favourite drink, while evenings are ideal for al fresco dining. Some of our bestloved cruises in summer take you on the
Rhône through the verdant vineyards of the south of France and to Provence, when the famed lavender fields are a fragrant sea of purple. A longer-length cruise that combines two itineraries will also make the most of the season.
How about a European tour to Scandinavia where the sun doesn’t set till up to around 11pm in summer? Or perhaps a trip around the Sorrento peninsula and the Bay of Naples in the glorious Italian sunshine.

Siobhan Senior Product Manager –River Cruises
TIME AT RIVIERA:
I’ve been at Riviera since 2008 and am a Senior Product Manager.
RIVIERA ROLE:
I oversee the River Cruise Product team, coordinating all our day-to-day tasks, and working alongside the fabulous operations team to ensure our cruises run smoothly. I’m also responsible for reviewing all our customer feedback to see where we can enhance our products and make sure they’re always standing out from the competition!
FAVOURITE RIVIERA HOLIDAY:
I was asked to be a Cruise Concierge a few years ago on the Rhine, Strasbourg & Heidelberg river cruise; I really enjoyed it, and the experience certainly put my product knowledge to the test! I was able to see first-hand how our cruises operate from our guests’ perspective as well as the tremendous hard work of the crew and Riviera team on board.
NUMBER ONE DESTINATION: Anywhere with mountains and not much else – but to start, the Pyrenees.
HOLIDAY ESSENTIAL:
Literally – suncream! I’m very fair skinned. Also, a good book with a cocktail of course! I only really read on holiday when I’m completely switched off from the day to day.

FAVOURITE RIVIERA HOLIDAY:
I haven’t been on an educational yet, however I was lucky to be part of the team for our ‘Riviera at 40’ celebrations in Paris earlier this year. I was blown away by how luxurious our ships are and how our team work so hard to make every guest feel special.
NUMBER ONE DESTINATION:
I love mainland Spain! Being in the mountains surrounded by stunning scenery and soaking up Spanish culture is my absolute favourite.

I have been here for almost 3 years now and I am part of the sales team liaising with our guests.
RIVIERA ROLE:
In the sales team we spend the day helping guests choose their next holiday – answering their questions, checking availability and prices, and making bookings. We also answer any email queries and if a customer has saved one of our itineraries we’ll give them a call or email them to see what further help we can provide. I have to say we have lovely customers and it’s a pleasure to speak with them every day.
FAVOURITE RIVIERA HOLIDAY:
In October 2023 I went on a fabulous educational trip to Vietnam. It was the first time I had visited Asia and found the whole trip amazing. The tour guides were exceptionally knowledgeable and gave us a wealth of information. I particularly enjoyed the day cruise on Halong Bay and the stunning scenery along the way.
NUMBER ONE DESTINATION:
This is a tricky one as I enjoy many types of holidays from skiing to cruising as well as touring! I think one of the most standout places I have visited is Sri Lanka. We recently did a 2-week tour, taking in its incredible cities, elephant safaris, historic sites, temples, white water rafting and river boat trips. The people were also very welcoming and so keen to show you their beautiful country.
HOLIDAY ESSENTIAL:
My mobile phone, purely for the camera. I have thousands of photos from places I have visited over the years and love to spend time looking back at them, remembering the great places I have seen. l
