To mark the 32nd edition of the Meeting, this is an extraordinary exhibition of the splendid Madonnas of Abruzzo, saved from the earthquake that struck the area in 2009. There are about twenty important polychrome sculptures and painted tablets, created by skilled masters, mainly from the Abruzzo area, between the end of the 12th and the middle of the 14th century. 05.09. - 24.09.2011 Rimini Conference Centre Auditorium, Via della Fiera Sagra Musicale Malatestiana This is the oldest and most prestigious event in the Rimini area and in its 62 editions has hosted some of the world’s greatest musicians. On the hundredth anniversary of his death, the programme of symphonic events begins on Monday, 5 September with a tribute to Gustav Mahler. The orchestra and children’s choir of the Regio Theatre of Turin, the RAI Symphonic Orchestra and the Choir of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino conducted by Gianandrea Noseda perform the monumental Symphony no. 8 in Mi Bemolle Maggiore, known also as the “Symphony of a Thousand” due to the number of performers required. On Sunday, 11 September the charismatic conductor Yuri Temirkanov takes to the stage to lead the Philharmonic Orchestra of St. Petersburg with elegance and verve. There’s room for Russian composers with the Symphonic Fantasia “Francesca da Rimini” op. 32 and Symphony no. 4 in F minor by Tchaikovsky, alongside the Rhapsody on a theme by Paganini for piano and orchestra op. 43 by Rachmaninov, entrusted to the virtuosity of the Russian pianist of Tartar origin Roustem Saitkoulov, winner of the World Piano Festival held in Monte Carlo and numerous other prizes in leading international piano competitions. The RAI Symphonic Orchestra returns to Rimini on Thursday, 15 September, this time conducted by Juray Valchua for another tribute to a great composer of the past century. Along with the symphonic poem “Till Eelenspiegels lustige Streiche”,

the Der Rosenkavalier Suite, from the comic opera in three acts op. 59 by Richard Strauss is performed - this year, is the hundredth anniversary of the first performance held at the Semperoper opera house in Dresden on 26 January 1911. The programme also includes pages by Anton Webern, Concert no. 1 in E minor for piano and orchestra op. 11 by Fryderyk Chopin entrusted to the performance of the twenty-seven-year-old Bulgarian Evgeni Bozhanov, who came second in the Queen Elisabeth Piano Competition 2010 and won the prestigious Casagrande di Terni Competition in 2008. A trio of stars comes to Rimini for the penultimate symphonic event on Sunday, 18 September: Antonio Pappano, one of the world’s most famous and best-loved conductors, the Santa Cecilia National Orchestra, that Pappano is musical director of, and the French piano poet Hélène Grimaud come together for a programme dedicated to Johannes Brahms, piano concert no. 1 and Nikolaj Andreevič RimskiKorsakov, Shéhérazade. The festival ends on Saturday, 24 September with the eagerly-awaited arrival of Zubin Mehta, who leads his Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in a tribute to two great centenarians of 2011: Gustav Mahler, with Symphony no. 5, and Franz Liszt, with Symphonic Poem op. 97 Les Préludes.
