MAYOR’S MESSAGE

July 1, 2025

A Monumental Year for America and Riverton

This month, I invite you to reflect on something truly extraordinary: we are just one year away from the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America.

Next summer on July 4, 2026, it will mark a historic milestone: a quarter of a millennium since our forefathers signed the Declaration of Independence and pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor to secure liberty for generations to come. Few nations in the history of the world have endured as long, and fewer still have advanced freedom and prosperity to the extent that America has.

self-government, individual liberty, and personal responsibility. And we honor those ideals not just with words, but through action, by raising strong families, supporting our neighbors, and serving our neighbors in need.

Throughout the next year, you’ll have ample opportunity to participate in events, initiatives, and tributes to mark this semiquincentennial milestone. From patriotic programs in our schools to community service projects and historical showcases, all of America will be in a spirit of celebration and gratitude. In preparation, I encourage you to consider what you and your family can do to mark this special occasion as well.

“Next summer on July 4, 2026, it will mark a historic milestone: a quarter of a millennium since our forefathers signed the Declaration of Independence...”

This year, starting with our own Riverton Town Days celebration, we begin a yearlong tribute to that incredible legacy. It’s a chance to remember who we are, recommit to the founding principles that made our nation exceptional, and inspire the rising generation to cherish and defend them.

Here in Riverton, we believe in the promise of America. We believe in

Let us not take this moment lightly. We are the stewards of an inheritance paid for in courage and sacrifice. Let us use this next year to reflect on the blessings of freedom and the responsibility it carries. In the words of President Ronald Reagan, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.” It is our job to ensure it is never extinguished on our watch.

Thank you for being part of this great community, and this great country. Let’s do our part to instill the principles of liberty in future generations so America will prosper for an additional 250 years.

Thank You, First Responders!

Last month, I scared my mom when I told her I had my first trip in an ambulance — during a ridealong with Unified Fire Authority! Thankfully, it was just part of an informative experience. I started the day sharing breakfast with the crew and appreciated the camaraderie and friendly conversations around the table. They reviewed their daily schedule and upcoming trainings, giving me a glimpse into their teamwork and dedication. Riverton is served by three fire stations:

● Station 120 (2700 W 13000 S): 2 firefighters, 1 ambulance

● Station 121 (4146 W 12600 S): 6 firefighters, 1 ladder truck, 1 ambulance

● Station 124 (1300 W 12662 S): 4 firefighters, 1 fire engine

I was truly impressed by the professionalism and compassion of our paramedics. They treated residents with kindness and provided excellent care, especially in difficult mental health situations. One tool that stood out to me was the stair chair - it allowed them to safely and smoothly transport a patient down a staircase.

While I only experienced a small part of what they do, it gave me a deep appreciation for the physical

and emotional toll their work takesespecially when they’re responding to emergencies throughout the night. I know the importance of prioritizing the safety of our community. We are fortunate to have such dedicated first responders.

With the recent fires in our area, I’ve been reminded of the importance of preparedness. I moved our fire extinguisher to the kitchen (where most home fires begin) and checked our smoke alarm batteries. As a foster family, we keep our CPR training current (remember 30 compressions, then 2 breaths). I also ordered a first aid kit for my son’s car and added a “Stop the Bleed” kit with a tourniquet to our emergency supplies.

Thank you Unified Fire Authority, for your unwavering service to our community. We are grateful for all you do to protect Riverton.

Illegal Operation of Electric Dirt Bikes

This is a pressing issue that requires our immediate attention. The illegal operation of electric dirt bikes in Riverton, Herriman, and Bluffdale is on the rise, posing a significant threat to public safety.

We have noticed a significant uptick in electric dirt bikes being illegally operated on city roads, sidewalks, and neighborhood green belts. Recently, students have been riding these dirt bikes to school, which has resulted in the SROs providing education on Utah Code 41-6a-1115.5 Electric Assisted Bicycles, 41-6a-102 Motor Vehicle Definitions, and 41-22-2 Off-Highway Vehicle Definitions to the students and their parents. In some cases, the SROs have impounded these electric dirt bikes to keep the students and the general public safe.

The dirt bikes in question are the SurRon and E-Pro electric dirt bikes (there are other manufacturers). These dirt bikes are marketed for off-road use only and can reach 70mph. As of now, these bikes cannot be registered for on-road use, and if they were, the operator would need to be 16 years of age and present a motorcycle endorsement or permit. Most operators with whom we come into contact are 12 to 14 years of age. Parents of these minors are allowing their children to ride these “E-Bikes” with the understanding that they are safe due to being electric and not having a gas

engine. We have explained that even though a Tesla vehicle is electric, it is still as dangerous as a gas-powered vehicle and needs a licensed person to operate it.

Parents must understand the potential dangers of allowing minors to operate these electric dirt bikes. We urgently request your help spreading this message through a social media public service announcement (PSA). Your active involvement is key to ensuring the safety of our community.

The Riverton Police Department is deeply committed to enhancing the quality of life in our community and partnering with you to ensure safety. We value your cooperation and vigilance in maintaining road safety. Together, we can make a difference and keep our roads safe for everyone. Please call the VECC dispatch number 801-840-4000 and report any instances of Electric Motorcycles or Golf Carts on public sidewalks, roads, and neighborhood city green belts.
