I am beyond excited to share details of the 2024 Education Season with you, my first as Manager at the Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre. I have come to this wonderful theatre with a background working with young people in the arts, and truly believe that theatre, arts, and creativity is key to engaging and inspiring our young people. I certainly have a lot to thank my Mount Austin High School Drama and English teachers for. An excursion to the theatre is so much more than a fun day out (although it certainly ticks that box!). It helps us connect ideas, connect emotions and connect with one another.
That Science Gang returns to Wagga Wagga to take a fantastic voyage through the human digestive system, with sketches, songs and sensational science in You are a Doughnut. Students will see young faces on stage when the Flying Fruit Fly Circus present Tempo. The extraordinary emsemble delivers magic, slapstick, acrobatics and more. Secondary teachers should take a close look at Melbourne Theatre Company’s SLAP.BANG.KISS. It explores themes of activism, community, and hope, and is supported by an amazing suite of teaching resources.
It’s a big year ahead. We have performances for all ages that are perfect for teachers of ALL curriculum areas. There are workshops for students, and teacher PL is back!

The children’s version of Li Cunxin’s iconic autobiography, Mao’s Last Dancer, The Peasant Prince is an extraordinary production of a remarkable story – of a peasant boy turned dance giant. It will inspire and enthral young audiences. Li, a 10-year old peasant boy is plucked from his village in rural China and sent to a ballet academy in the big city. He leaves everything and everyone he loves, including his family.

Besides the royal wedding, which is just days away, there are young lovers dreaming of enchanted futures together. Hermia and Lysander are besotted with one another, while Helena adores Demetrius. The only snag is that Demetrius loves Hermia – and he’s got Hermia’s father on his side. So nobody is happy. (Shakespeare wasn’t kidding when he said the course of true love never did run smooth.)

It tells the story of Frank Doyle, an Aboriginal serviceman who has come home from World War II to find that although the wider world may have changed, attitudes back home in Brisbane are just the same. Filled with a defiant energy and ambition for a better life, Frank starts The Sunshine Club, a place where black and white can meet and, most importantly, dance. Here he dreams of a future where he can dance in step with Rose, the girl next door, the girl of his dreams.

A mysterious fleet of giant nawi is amassing in the harbour and as they creep closer, these seven representatives must choose unanimously: whether to send these strangers on their way or welcome them?

Nurture your inner artist with insights into Melbourne Theatre Company’s theatre-making process and activities to get your creative juices flowing. Explore various approaches to interpreting a script, with insights from the SLAP. BANG. KISS. rehearsal room. Mine the text for facts and given circumstances, make predictions, annotate objectives, beats and units, then try your ideas out on the floor. There will also be time for Q&A with a guest from Melbourne Theatre Company.

STEP 5. ON THE DAY
We advise arriving at the theatre approximately 20 minutes prior to your performance. Seating for school performances is often general admission and not ticketed (unless specified). Schools will be asked to enter as a group and theatre staff will show you to your allocated seats. Late arrivals may be excluded from the performance or may not be admitted until a suitable break in the performance. If you are running late, please contact the Box Office on 02 6926 9688.

Planning your trip to the theatre TRANSPORT
Civic Theatre has an easy drop off and pick up point for school buses on Burns Way directly outside the theatre entrance. ACCESSIBILITY
HELPING HAND
A lift is located in the foyer. Toilets are fully accessible and accessible seating is available. Accessible parking and drop off is located directly outside the entrance.
The theatre’s Helping Hand program exists to nurture our young people. We understand that coming to the theatre can transform lives but for some it may be out of financial reach. We never want barriers to prevent students from accessing the theatre and its associated programs. Please get in touch with us if you have students in need of support or need help organising transport for your class.
Please contact the Box Office prior to your excursion to notify seating requirements. FOYERS AND COURTYARDS
The Civic Theatre foyer space is limited and not recommended for school groups to sit for meal breaks before and after the show.
OTHER HELPFUL TIPS
We are fortunate to have the civic precinct right outside our doors with expansive grassed areas and seating for students to run, play and eat. A great place to burn off some energy before or after the show before the journey home. In the case of bad weather, we will accommodate your group wherever possible.
Many of our school shows fill quickly. We encourage you to book early to ensure you get your preferred performance time.

Access information Wheelchair spaces are available and we can assist with other mobility issues. If you require wheelchair access or other assistance at the Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre please indicate on the booking form or inform the Box Office team at the time of your booking.
Parking is available in close proximity to the Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre. Car parks are located in Cross Street, entry via Cross Street and at the corner of Morrow and O’Reilly Streets, entry via O’Reilly Street. A carer is entitled to a free ticket when accompanying a paid Companion Card holder to the theatre.
The Civic Theatre is fitted with a hearing loop. The system is accessible via hearing aids with a telephone setting. Please note, reception quality and levels may vary according to the age and type of hearing aid.
The Civic Theatre foyer is a designated area for people to safely recharge their electric mobility scooter or wheelchair battery free of charge.
