EARTHMOVING: Heavy machinery forming the new roadway as part of the Eunony Bridge Road deviation project.

Roadworks to open up Bomen begin Heavy earthmoving machinery is hard at work on a new 1.8km road designed to assist with the movement of freight to and from the Bomen Industrial Area.

Scheduled to be completed by the end of June 2015, the $6.1M Eunony Bridge Road deviation project was one of the key proposals to come out of the Bomen Strategic Master Plan. The northern end of Eunony Bridge Road will be closed in the process, shutting down a potentially dangerous T-intersection with Oura Road and allowing Eunony Bridge Road to connect directly with Byrnes Road and through to the Bomen Business Park. As a result of extensive community and industry consultation, the new road and roundabout has been designed to enable the anticipated movement of B-Triple trucks through the region in the future. Council is currently working with the NSW State

Government to ensure that the ageing Eunony Bridge is also upgraded to facilitate the passage of heavy vehicles from the Sturt Highway to the Bomen Business Park. Currently, heavy vehicles travelling from the Sturt Highway to the Bomen Business Park either have to take a much longer route through Wagga Wagga and back around the Olympic Highway, or negotiate two tight turns via Eunony Bridge Road and Oura Road before getting on to Byrnes Road. “This is an exciting project that is considered integral to encouraging the development and future growth of the Bomen Business Park,” Wagga Wagga City Council’s Director of Infrastructure Services Heinz Kausche said. “By eliminating mechanically intensive T-intersection turns, this new section of road will make it safer for heavy vehicles travelling between the Sturt Highway and the Bomen Business Park.” The project is jointly funded with Council’s $3.6M contribution supported by a $2.5M NSW Government Grant. “There are many benefits of this road

deviation for companies that are looking at investing in the Bomen Business Park,” Director of Commercial and Economic Development Peter Adams said. “The reduction in travel time, fuel consumption and engine stress for commercial freight vehicles are all direct benefits of the project. Enabling infrastructure such as this will improve the financial viability of existing and future businesses that rely on road transport for the supply and receipt of goods.” Council staff are already working hard to ensure that the road is completed by the end of June 2015. The road works will affect traffic in the area over the coming months, and the community will be kept informed about detours. “Noting the increase in the movement of vehicles associated with the construction works and the changes to traffic conditions, the community are asked to be vigilant and take extra care when travelling in the vicinity of the site,” Wagga Wagga City Council’s Director of Infrastructure Services Heinz Kausche added.
