STAR RATING: Wagga Wagga City Council’s Environmental Health Coordinator Sharomi Dayanand (right) discusses the Scores on Doors program to O’Brien’s Hot Bake owner Peter O’Brien (left).
Star rating system highlights food safety standards of local eateries Wagga Wagga diners are set to benefit from the rollout of the Scores on Doors program, a star rating system designed to help consumers better understand the standard of food safety in the retail food business sector.
Joining the state-wide program is a great opportunity for the many Wagga Wagga businesses that work hard to comply with legislation, to collectively promote
their high standards to locals and visitors alike. “The purpose of the voluntary Scores on Doors initiative is to benefit the consumer and the business by improving transparency and accountability,” Council’s Environment and Recreation Services Manager Mark Gardiner said. “The new program is aimed at informing consumers about food hygiene and assists diners in making informed choices about where to eat or shop.” The reward star rating system is built on the existing inspection process and depending on how well
a business performs, a certificate will be issued by Council’s authorised Environmental Health Officers (EHO) who carry out food service business inspections. The result is then displayed in a highly visible place to customers, usually in the business’s front window or door. A business is assessed against a standardised food safety checklist and assigned a star rating; 5 stars is Excellent, 4 stars is Very Good and 3 stars is Good.
