Anzac legacy burns bright
Veteran relights flame to mark $130,000 upgrade The Eternal Flame is burning bright once more after being reignited this week to mark the completion of $130,000 of upgrade works.
The project began in October last year and is a jointly funded initiative between Wagga Wagga City Council, Wagga RSL Club, the RSL Sub Branch and the Federal Government to upgrade the flame as part of marking the Anzac Centenary. The flame in the Victory Memorial Gardens was lit by WWII Veteran and the oldest member of the Wagga RSL SubBranch Colin Bell.

Every element of the new flame tells part of Australia’s Anzac story, with the circular shape of the pond representing eternity and the undisturbed water signifying tranquillity. Stainless steel and brass have also been used to reference “age will not weary them”. The new pond also features a concrete ring around it with LED lights and three new brass cover plates displaying
the words “Vigilance”, “Sacrifice” and “Liberty” to appropriately represent the significance of the flame. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga, Councillor Rod Kendall, paid tribute to those who gave their lives for Australia. “This Eternal Flame is a fitting tribute to those who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty and have laid down their lives so we might enjoy this beautiful, peaceful land in which we are privileged
