Wagga set for Country-City clash Footy legends Paul Sironen and Steve “Blocker” Roach played side by side at the Tigers for years as teammates.

But when it came to choosing between Sydney and the bush, friendship went out the window.

The only time the pair met on the football field as foes was during Country-City and the former Balmain forwards joined Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor

Rod Kendall earlier this week to call on the region to support the Country-City clash at McDonald’s Park on Sunday 3 May. “I think I played seven or eight times for City over my career and it was the only time Blocker and I came head to head,” Sironen said.

“This year we’ll draw well from the Riverina area – it’s really important that people get behind it.”

Roach said as a footballer, playing

in a representative game was always a great honour.

“It’s a great opportunity for young blokes to get to play representative football,” he said. “The big thing for the Country boys is to showcase where you come from.

“Hopefully all the Country people turn out and watch the game.”

Country-City will round out one of the biggest weekends in Wagga, with the Gold Cup carnival

culminating at the Murrumbidgee Turf Club on 1 May. The blockbuster is also the third national sporting event for the City of Good Sports in 2015, following a Brumbies-Highlanders Super Rugby trial game also at McDonald’s Park and the Sheffield Shield match between NSW and Victoria at Robertson Oval. Cr Kendall said Council had been working closely with CRL and NRL to ensure the

game at McDonald’s Park was a huge success.

“The facilities at McDonald’s Park are just first rate,” he said.

“McDonald’s Park is a great oval, it’s a great facility. We’re looking forward to a huge crowd here.

“These are the sorts of games that people wait for to come to a regional city.”

Entry to the ground itself will be via the gate near the scoreboard.

Before some of the NRL’s best footballers clash in Country-City Origin next weekend, why not discover how regional NSW’s strong rugby league history?

To coincide with the representative clash to be played in Wagga on 3 May, the Wagga Wagga City Library is hosting Bush Footy, an exhibition from the Heroes and Legends Rugby League Museum.

A Heroes and Legends Forum will be held in the library at 10am Wednesday 29 April with former Bulldogs captain and NSW and Australian Representative Andrew Ryan, David Barnhill and

Greg Brentnall.

The exhibition celebrates the unique story of how regional rugby league helped shape the code.

Highlights include Brentnall’s Country First 1975 jersey, Ron Crow’s 1961 Australian Jersey,

Caltex CRL Player of the Year Jamie Soward’s headgear and the Maher Cup. The exhibition features the 100 Greatest Players interactive display and the CRL Team of the Century, which was selected in

the 2008 centenary year.

It also includes local content – a photo of the Maher Cup match on 12 June 1954, a 1960s CRL NSW referee’s badge and various scrapbooks.

Bush Footy was sourced

by Riverina Regional Library and it is exciting to host an exhibition with great local content and one that will attract new audiences to the library.

Bush Footy is open during library hours from Monday to Saturday until 23 May. When it leaves Wagga Wagga, the exhibition will feature in regional centres from 2015-2017.

Have you got a green thumb? Do you have a great idea for our community?

Applications are open until 31 May for Council’s Annual Grants Program, which has $175,000 up for grabs across six categories.

If you’re interested in planting some native trees,or creating a community food garden, then the sustainable environment category can offer grants from $100 right up to $2500.

“The sustainable environment

category gives community members the chance to help look after the places where we live, work and play,” Council’s Environmental Coordinator Carly Hood said.

SENIOR TEAM MEMBER (CIVIL) Two (2) Vacant Positions FLYING HIGH: Flight has landed at the Wagga Wagga Regional Airport, completing a series of three public artworks at the airport.

New artwork takes Flight from Airport

A new artwork has taken “flight” at the Wagga Wagga Regional Airport, with visitors to the city now greeted by the 15-metre long creation to be officially unveiled on Monday 27 April.

Flight completes a series of three major public art works at the airport, joining Col Henry’s Reflective Nature and Jonathan Jones, Aunty Sandy Warren, Aunty Lorrain Tye and Aunty Joyce Hampden’s Wagga Wagga weaving welcome completed in December 2013.

Flight is inspired by both the Murrumbidgee River and features abstract wings, which represent flight and the connection to the airport site, which move when a breeze comes through.

The Wagga Wagga Writers Writers, through the Booranga Writers’ Centre at Charles Sturt University, helped develop the symbolic wording on the artwork: “Horizons made wide in the country”.

Attending the official opening will be Susan Milne

and Greg Stonehouse, the artists behind Flight, and Wagga Wagga Writers Writers representatives David Gilbey, Joan Cahill, Claire Baker, Maurice Corlett and Kathryn Halliwell.

Milne and Stonehouse collaborated with the writers group, who submitted a number of possible phrases for the artwork, with Council selecting “Horizons made wide in the country” as it not only represented the landscape that visitors are often mesmerised by, but also refers to the so many options available to those living in Wagga.

“Recognising the key role that public art plays in fulfilling this commitment, and responding to the cultural needs of the community, Council’s Public Art Plan 2014-2016 entitled “WaggaWorks – Our City’s Creative Expression” outlines key principles and strategies for enhancing the City’s public spaces.

The Airport Precinct Public Art Project was a major project for the Public Art Advisory Panel.

Are Wagga residents prepared to pay higher rates to their Council?

Many of our surrounding councils have asked their residents if they would like

to pay higher rates and the answer appears to be a resounding yes.

The Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) has approved Junee Shire’s application for three consecutive rate increases of 11.9 per cent (2014/15), 9.5 per cent (2015/16) and 9 per cent (2016/17). Also approved was Gundagai’s request for a one-off increase of 15.12 per cent for the 2014/15 year.

Down to the south of us, Greater Hume is looking for IPART approval for three consecutive annual increases of 10.7 per cent per annum.

Wagga Wagga City Council had a five-year special rate variation approved in 2006 to address a number of projects, including a new community facility, which is yet to be built.

You may have also noticed your water bills increasing by 10 per cent per annum.

councillor.mclaren@wagga.nsw.gov.au It appears to me that Local Government is not particularly good at living within its means. Poor management, poor cost control and lack of forward planning have councils throwing their hands in the air declaring “the cupboard is bare”.

Methinks they have a spending problem, not a revenue problem.

The other conclusion that could be reached is that smaller councils are highly

inefficient and should look at mergers to create less cost pressures on ratepayers.

Looking around our region I can only see a small number of forward-thinking councils prepared to even consider this option.

What do you expect from your Council? Should Wagga City Council own childcare centres that they lease for less than $500 per annum to the operators? Should Wagga City Council lend

funds to private enterprise?

Should Wagga City Council be funding activities for Earth Hour or Ryan Gosling Film Festivals?

There is no doubt that the Local Government system has evolved poorly and the NSW Government should look at drastic reform to bring it in line with modern day expectations.

Award-winning journalist share new Anzac novel at Library

Veteran journalist Steve Sailah will give a lunchtime author talk and book signing at the Wagga Wagga City Library next week.

Sailah enjoyed a 26-year career with the ABC, as foreign correspondent, radio current affairs reporter and executive producer of The World Today. He is also the recipient of two prestigious Walkley Awards.

In A Fatal Tide, Sailah employs his extensive knowledge of the Gallipoli campaigns to add

To commemorate the Centenary of Anzac, Wagga Wagga City Council has commissioned a special digital projection by local artist Andrew Hagan. Their Light Still Shines highlights Wagga’s Anzac stories and will be projected each night at the Civic Centre from 25 April under 8 June.

PUBLIC EXHIBITION OF DRAFT AMENDMENT TO WAGGA WAGGA LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL PLAN 2010

Aim: To exhibit the Planning Proposal containing six items that amend Local Environmental Plan maps, clauses and schedule.

The six LEP amendment items include: Item 1 – Estella Business Zone, rezone land from RE1 Public Recreation to B2 Local Centre.

Item 2 – Gregadoo Waste Management Facility, rezone land from RU1 Primary Production to SP1 Special Activities (Waste Disposal Facility) and remove minimum lot size restrictions.

Item 3 – Hilltop – Bourkelands, rezone land to align the E2 Conservation and RE1 Public Recreation zoning.

OPERATION OF BOARDING HOUSES

Within the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area there is a range of accommodation types. Included in these accommodation types are premises that Council considers to be boarding houses. Boarding houses are buildings, including dwellings, where lodgings are

let out on a per room basis (as opposed to a single lease over a dwelling) for periods of 3 or more months. Development consent is required to operate a boarding house.

In recent times Council has received complaints that there are boarding houses in the city operating in dwellings without consent. As people may not have been aware for the need for consent, Council is currently holding an amnesty period, where people can self-report their unapproved boarding houses and lodge a Development Application to seek consent. During this amnesty period Council will waive all Development Application fees associated with an application for a boarding house.

The amnesty period is for 12 months commencing February 2015 and will end on 29th February 2016. At the end of the amnesty period Council will commence actively pursuing boarding houses operating without consent, which may result in fines for operators of such premises.
