Little Big Day Out fun School holiday fun stepped up a gear for thousands of kids who joined in the excitement of this year’s Little Big Day Out. Returning for its 13th year, Little Big Day Out offered a great mix of activities and delights for kids aged two to 12-years.

The day was a chance to showcase a range of services provided by the City of Wagga Wagga – everything from Council machinery displays to plane making with the Museum of the Riverina and a chance to ride in the water rollers from the Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre. (Continues inside)

Enhance your business street appeal with funding boost Help beautify city’s retail areas by applying for new business grants Local business owners with great ideas that could help enhance the vibrancy of the city’s retail precincts are encouraged to apply for a new City of Wagga Wagga grants program.

The Economic Development Grants 16/17 program is offering business owners, or

people thinking about establishing a new retail business, grants of up to $3000 to help transform the look and feel of retail areas in Wagga.

“The grants are about re-investing in the city’s streetscape and increasing pedestrian activity in retail areas,” Manager Economic Development & Visitor Economy Richie Robinson said.

“There is no reason why Wagga can’t have it’s own version of Melbourne’s Lygon Street or Brisbane’s South Bank or Rundle Mall in Adelaide.

“These locations are well-known for being thriving, bustling meeting hubs. They create

a welcoming atmosphere and have strong economic flow-on effects.”

Parking trials in Wagga’s CBD, which have created 40 centre-of-the-road parking spaces in Kincaid Street and increased timed-parking along sections of Fitzmaurice Street, will help cater for any increased activity in the CBD. Projects supported through the grants include providing alfresco dining, busker or street performer spaces, lighting and street facade improvements, initiatives that encourage increased pedestrian activity or creation of meeting places.

A total of $12,500 worth of funding is

available through the 2016/17 Program with grants available from a minimum of $500 to a maximum of $3000 per project.

To be eligible applicants must make a financial (not in-kind) contribution either equal to or greater than the value of funding awarded through the program.

Applicants are encouraged to make a submission prior to November 30 to ensure consideration in the first round of assessments.

Continued from front There was also a Wagga View healthy eating master chef class, run in partnership with the Murrumbidgee Local Health District, to showcase the benefits of healthy living and healthy communities and recycled materials were used to print and paint a large banner for the Wagga Wagga Regional Family Day Care.

The ever-popular Planning Permit Pursuit treasure hunt returned and had kids exploring the Civic Centre precinct for clues to win some amazing prizes.

Adding to the days’ fun was Bounce Yoga’s “Little Yogis” yoga classes for kids, performances by Southern Cross Performing Arts and a silent disco where kids got to don a pair of headphones and bop along and groove to a range of tunes.

Stars from Cirque Africa, who are in town for a series of performances, also wowed the crowd with high-flying tricks.

This year’s persistent wet weather moved some activities inside the Civic Centre, but it didn’t stop kids, and their parents, from having a great day out, event coordinator Cassie Nimmo said.

“Although we were lucky that the sun was shining on the day, the already saturated grounds meant we had to move some activities indoors,” Ms Nimmo said.

“The indoor activities were just as popular as the outdoor ones. The crowd was really accommodating, and we thank them for that.

“Once again it was great to see so many families support this free community event and learn a bit more about the City of Wagga Wagga, what we do and what we can offer to the community.”

The northern end of the island between Chaston Street and Meurant Avenue was demolished and reconstructed, damage to the southern end was repaired and signs and lines reinstalled.

Reconstruction of the northern end of the island makes righthand turns from Meurant Avenue easier for heavy vehicles and will improve the flow of northbound traffic on Docker Street.

Works were carried out on Wednesday with asphalting on site on Thursday.

ROAD WORKS AHEAD: Works to reconstruct the northern end of this Docker Street traffic island, near the new Docker Street medical centre, were carried out this week.

LORD BADEN POWELL DRIVE CLOSED FOR EMERGENCY ROAD WORKS Lord Baden Powell Drive is closed to traffic for emergency road works.

The City of Wagga Wagga has been monitoring a pavement failure in the road uphill from Wilks Avenue – with emergency repairs rescheduled twice due to wet weather.

During this time Council had made the site safe by diverting traffic around the damaged area.

Council investigated the site on Thursday and determined the damage had further deteriorated and the road was now too dangerous to remain open.

The failure has been caused by an underground spring, which is different to a pothole and requires

significant construction work and excavation to repair.

Lord Baden Powell Drive will remain closed to all traffic until next week for investigation and repair works to take place. Local traffic allowed, including visitors to Museum of the Riverina Botanic Gardens site.

Detours are in place along Lake Albert Road and Macleay Street. There is no access from Captain Cook Drive, Grove Street and Wilks Avenue.

Variable message boards are also in place for motorists.

Fusion16 to burst alive next Saturday

The Civic Centre precinct is set to burst alive with colour and excitement next weekend for Fusion16.

Fusion is about celebrating the food, music, art and cultures that mix together to make our Wagga Wagga community unique and liveable.

Now in its sixth year Fusion attracts more than 10,000 people from all walks of life.

This year’s festival will again feature eclectic performances, mouth-watering food and pop-up shops.

SUPPORT SOUGHT FOR FINANCIAL A S S I S TA N C E G R A N T S R E D U C T I O N The City of Wagga Wagga will rally support from regional councils and the city’s state and federal MPs in response to a decision that has reduced Council’s annual income by about $360,000.

The City of Wagga Wagga receives about $9.8M under the Commonwealth Government’s Financial Assistance Grants, which is about 10 per cent of Council’s yearly operating income.

The funding is general purpose income and contributes to a full range of Council projects, services and facilities, including roads, parks and gardens, libraries the Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre and more.

“This reduction means Wagga, and other regional cities, will need to adjust their budgets to accommodate for this shortfall,” Director Corporate Services Craig Richardson said.

“This ultimately means services will suffer because we have to make adjustments. We don’t know what that looks like yet, but it is something we are going to be working on over the next few months and will send a report back to Council highlighting the areas that will be impacted.”

Mr Richardson said Council’s priority now was to change the way grant allocations are calculated so as not to disadvantage regional cities.

“Our main line of argument will be that Local Government NSW changes its policy position which currently supports the retention of minimum grants for metropolitan Councils,” he said.

In 2016/17 the Financial Assistance Grants will contribute $6.5M towards general purpose projects, this figure is down $352,000 from last year’s funding, and, $3M towards the local roads component, an annual reduction of $9,448.

“Based on the current format most metropolitan Councils won’t receive any reductions to grant funding. We believe these Councils have more capacity to absorb the reductions as opposed to regional Councils that normally have huge road networks to maintain.”

The Financial Assistance Grants reductions have been put in place to help redirect additional funding to small rural and remote Councils.

“This is a commendable move, but the reduction of funds should largely be coming from metropolitan Councils rather than regional cities,” Mr Richardson said.

Council will work with other regional councils affected by the grant reductions and will table a motion to Local Government NSW in October to have the decision changed.

Council will also seek support for the motion from State Member for Wagga Wagga Daryl Maguire and Federal Member for Riverina Michael McCormack.

For the past five weeks City of Wagga Wagga staff have been committed to mitigating flood risks to protect people, properties and city assets.

Disaster can strike at any time – which is why Council has been providing an around-the-clock emergency response and preparedness effort to the current flood event at Wagga Wagga.

“During storms, freezing temperatures and while most residents are sleeping or at home and out of harm’s way, Council crews have been out closing roads or clearing them of debris, monitoring pumps to ensure urban flooding is mitigated and surveying

the levee for any potential risks,” City of Wagga Wagga General Manager Alan Eldridge said.

“The City of Wagga Wagga plays a central role in protecting people across the Local Government Area (LGA) during weather events, such as the current flood activity.

“We are lucky to be able to draw on staff from across the organisation that have a wealth of knowledge, expertise and can provide assistance to help keep the community safe.

“All it takes is one phone call and crews are either out in the field assisting or on standby,

REPORT IT TO RID IT – I L L E G A L D U M P I N G C A M PA I G N L A U N C H E D With a 2015/16 clean-up bill of $183,000, Wagga Wagga, it’s time to get RID of illegal dumping.

RID, or Report Illegal Dumping, is part of the City of Wagga Wagga’s new ‘Don’t Dump, it’s Dumb’ campaign to help tackle and prevent illegal dumping.

“Dumping rubbish or unwanted goods in reserves, gullies, along roadsides or anywhere that isn’t an approved rubbish or recycling centre is a fineable offence,” Environmental Education Officer Alice Kent said.

“A fine for illegal dumping is significantly more expensive then the cost of a trip to the tip to dispose of waste responsibly – it’s just not worth the risk.”

“There is also the huge environmental impact. We are spoilt with beautiful areas along the river, around the lake and lagoons and bushland reserves and it is sad when dumped rubbish detracts from this beauty.”

The campaign aims to reduce the incidences of illegal dumping through a comprehensive awareness program complete with two 15-second television commercials, distribution of report-an-incident postcards and

There will also be a free mattress disposal day across the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area on Saturday 22 October and Sunday 23 October, installation of infrastructure to prevent illegal dumping in known dumping hot spots, such as fencing and signage, and surveillance to help identify, fine and deter offenders.

“As well as sending the message of responsible disposal of waste, we are also asking residents to report offenders or incidents of illegal dumping,” Miss Kent said.
