Wagga Comedy Fest to serve up laughs Sold out shows with Anh Do proved to be the perfect entrée for the 2019 Wagga Comedy Fest.

Following on from Do’s shows this week, the Civic Theatre will serve up 10 side-splitting courses of comedy from 13 to 15 June.

Tickets are selling fast for this year’s Wagga Comedy Fest, which

features Becky Lucas, Lano & Woodley, Luke McGregor, Mel Buttle, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival roadshow, Randy the puppet, Rhys Nicholson, The Chaser and the Riverina Comedy Club.

The popular Winter Markets will also be back again, with hot food and free laughs on offer.

“Anh Do was one of our headlines at the first Wagga Comedy Fest in 2015, which also featured Luke McGregor, so it’s fitting to have those two back again now the

festival has grown so much,” Civic Theatre Manager Carissa Campbell said.

“Tickets are starting to be snapped up as we get closer to the main part of the festival and the shows have staggered start times so you can catch as many comedians as possible.

“In between, you can enjoy warm fires, food, drinks and free entertainment at the Winter Markets outside the theatre.”

The 2019 Wagga Comedy Fest

is the biggest yet and features a mix of established and emerging comedians, along with a healthy serve of local talent.

“It’s been encouraging to see the growth of Wagga Wagga’s own comedy scene over the past five years,” Ms Campbell said.

“Dane Simpson has honed his skills at the festival since 2015 and this year the Riverina Comedy Club will be hosting a night of fun at the Riverina Playhouse.

“It’s also great to have the iconic

Lano & Woodley in Wagga, who are back together again with their show FLY. They took out the People’s Choice Award at the 2018 Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

“Another highlight will be The Chaser and The Shovel’s War on History, which is dubbed the least reliable, but most hilarious account of Australian history.”

BRINGING BUSINESSES TOGETHER

Local businesses came together to share ideas and expand their networks recently as part of Council’s Tourism Partner Program.

The networking evening at the E3 Art Space in the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery saw members of the program talk connected tourism-related businesses with government, industry and other home-grown tourism operators.

Registrations for the 2019/20 Wagga Tourism Partner Program are now open and with visitors injecting more than $353M into the local economy each year, there’s never been a better time to get involved.

The program is open to join year-round, but partners must be registered by 19 June 2019 to be included in the annual Visitor Guide. The guide is released in spring each year, with 20,000 copies distributed across NSW, Victoria, ACT, South Australia and Queensland.

There are currently more than 140 Tourism Partners across the region, who are working together with Council to capitalise on the 1.3M people who visit our region each year.

The State Government, through IPART, determines the maximum rate rise that local government can apply each year. This setting of rates imparts

a real financial ceiling on all councils.

The government must recognise this financial impost and respect it in all dealings with local councils. In my opinion, the State Government, including all state instrumentalities, should respect this impost and never impose a total percentage increase in its charges to local councils that exceeds the set maximum percentage rate rise give to councils in any given year.

Unfortunately, this appeal, which has been repeated time and time again by councils, continues to fall on deaf ears.

Wood heaters are a great source of heat, but the smoke they produce is a major source of air pollution. Not only is excess smoke a sign you are wasting money, but particles in the smoke have been linked to heart and lung disease.

1. Use dry, seasoned, untreated wood.

The logs should make a ‘crack’ when struck together not a ‘dull thud’ 2. Stack wood under cover in a dry ventilated area 3. Use small logs and place them in your heater in a way that ensures air can circulate freely

4. Burn the fire brightly. Run the heater on a high burn rate (air control fully open) for 5 minutes before and 15 to 20 minutes after adding logs 5. Don’t let your heater smoulder overnight – keep the air control open enough to maintain a flame. A wellinsulated house will stay warmer longer.

Starting a conversation on equity and respect A near capacity crowd joined the discussion about gender equity and respect on Wednesday 5 June.

The My Story. Our Story. event at the Civic Theatre saw acclaimed journalist Ray Martin lead a panel discussion on how we can all be part of the solution locally.

Rounding out the panel were Wagga Women’s Health Centre Vice President Genevieve Fleming, School Liaison Police Officer Senior Constable Troy Fisher and Community Manager - NRL Respect Steve Meredith.

The night aimed to start a conversation about changing community attitudes, social norms and stereotypes towards domestic and family violence.

“I suspect there were a few people who were confronting the topic for the first time and that was very good,” Mr Martin said.

“Full marks to Wagga Council for having launched this. This begins the conversation, now it’s up to Wagga to do something about it.

“The spotlight has been put on this issue. We need to

change the attitudes of our boys and our brothers and our fathers and our grandfathers etc.

“It’s not going to be quick, but we’ve changed attitudes about smoking, we changed attitudes about seatbelts and we can change attitudes about this.”

The My Story. Our Story. event forms part of an overarching prevention program, the DVproject:2650, funded with by a $1.2M NSW Government grant.

Wagga Women’s Health Centre Vice President Genevieve Fleming said the program, which is being delivered by Council, is focused on equity and respect to change community attitudes at a grassroots level.

“Most people think domestic violence is a result of drug and alcohol issues or anger management issues, but what we really explored on Wednesday night is gender inequality,” she said.

“We tell our boys don’t cry. We tell our boys to be physically aggressive on the sporting field.

“What we need to be

helping men with is that being vulnerable is ok. Being weak is ok. We need to better equip men to deal with conflict and to deal with times of stress without resorting to violence.

“It’s not about demonising men for being violent, we need to help men to better understand how to resolve these issues.

“What we need are healthy and respectful relationships where there’s equality so men and women can sit down and work out their problems with open communication instead of resorting to violence.”

Council’s Director Community, Janice Summerhayes said they are working hard to build a resilient and respectful community where everyone is valued and gender equality is normalised.

“Council’s project team will be working to keep conversations about equity and respect rolling out over the next two years, with a community wide campaign due to be launched later this year," she said.

All proceeds from the My Story. Our Story. event will support the work of the Wagga Women’s Health Centre.

Whether you want to repair it or upcycle it, community members are encouraged to bring along a small non-electrical item that needs some love, or a photo of a larger item, for our guru to show you how broken

bits and pieces or old furniture can be renewed.

The workshop runs from 10am to noon at Ngurra Youth Hub on Blakemore Avenue and is part of Council’s ‘Don’t Dump, it’s Dumb’ initiative, which targets illegal kerbside dumping within our community.
