The Stage 2 upgrade is scheduled to take approximately 14 months, weather dependant.

Sunset Strip will be in Wagga Wagga on Saturday, 28 September next year – one of 24 acts on the theatre’s 2019 calendar.

“Every year I look around Australia for the great theatre.

We are so lucky to have many talented theatre makers and it a great privilege to bring them to the Civic Theatre stage each year,” Civic Theatre Manager Carissa Campbell said.

The 2019 Season offers plays including Much Ado About Nothing, a political satire with The Gospel According to Paul,

great music from Katie Noonan, dance from The Australian Ballet’s Coppélia and 100 Years of the History of Dance. The year kicks off with Urban Circus from 360 ALLSTARS. “In 2019 we also have embarked on a new era in the life of the theatre. From now on the Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre will be working with talented theatre makers to develop new, local professional shows for the stage. The first of these is The Hall Committee which we have developed over the last couple of years with writer/director Damian Callinan,” Ms Campbell said.

The Hall Committee will be performed at seven different venues in September next year.

FIVE-MONTH TRIAL FOR FOOD TRUCKS IN WAGGA

Wagga Wagga’s foodie culture has been given the green light to activate underserved sections of the community.

So if you’re looking for a quick coffee in Boorooma, or a sandwich at the beach, the prospect of a food truck in the area will soon be a welcome sight.

A five-month trial, expected to start in January 2019, was endorsed by Wagga Wagga City Council at its 26 November meeting. The goal of the trial is to determine if there is community demand for this type

of service and the impacts to the broader economy.

Council’s Manager City Strategy Tristan Kell said the trial was an excellent opportunity to gauge community response to having mobile food vehicles operating in areas across the city.

“Council is giving the trial every opportunity to succeed. Now it’s up to the community and vendors to make the most of the opportunity,” Mr Kell said.

“Food trucks activate spaces, bring people together and provide an exciting range of choices in areas with sometimes limited options, which all enhance the liveability of an area. They also allow start-ups with creative new offerings a pathway to enter the market.

“It must be stressed this is a trial which is designed to supplement the city’s food industry – not to replace it or encroach on those businesses already established.”

MPS CLOSER TO COMPLETION

Four, one-tonne air conditioning units were installed on the roof of the multi-purpose stadium (MPS) this week, as construction of the $9M stadium nears completion.

Project Manager Thomas Lemerle said onlookers were treated to the unique sight of a 300-tonne crane, with boom extended to 80 metres, towering over the MPS to undertake the weighty installation task.

“Indoors, the digital scoreboards were installed and the finishing touches are being applied to the court line marking which meets international standards,” Mr Lemerle said.

Three netball, volleyball and basketball courts and one futsal court are laid out in different colours across the stadium floor.

Two red river gums will be removed this month in preparation for remediation works at the historic Abutment A, a significant remnant of the former Hampden Bridge.

Wagga Wagga City Council Director Commercial Operations Caroline Angel said it’s the first step in the rollout of the $364,000 Hampden Bridge Legacy Project approved by Council in 2017.

“Sited on the western side of the Murrumbidgee River, Abutment A is one of two relics left in situ following the bridge's demolition,” she said.

“The two large gum trees growing through Abutment A have caused damage to the 120-year-old bridge buttress, which is valued for its heritage significance.

“As well as conserving the remaining historical structures, the project incorporates interpretive signage and

extensive landscaping of the area around Abutment A,” she said.

Pier 3, on the eastern side of the river, will also undergo refurbishment works as part of the project.

The Hampden Bridge Legacy Project is designed to be a place for the community to remember the important role the bridge played in the formation of Wagga Wagga.

The interpretation project was one of the specific consent conditions when the bridge was demolished in 2014.

The Hampden Bridge Legacy Project works are scheduled to commence in 2019 after the Stage 2 Main City levee upgrade works are completed.

The walking track and surrounding area will be closed to pedestrians from 7.30am on Thursday 13 December during the felling and removal process.

I had the pleasure the week before last to attend the annual SWITCH conference.

The conference is organised by the NSW Public Libraries Association (NSWPLA) of which I am currently President. This conference is attended by a large number of library staff and also an increasing number of Councillors (around 300 people).

Throughout the full two-day program, attendees were

exposed to a number of sessions run by their peers but also keynote speakers both domestic and international involved in the industry.

One of the sessions held was in relation to the current Renew Our Libraries campaign.

This campaign is a joint venture between NSWPLA and Local Government NSW. This in itself was a major coup in having these two organisations come together to co-fund a campaign in relation to the funding of what already are social and cultural hubs within communities across the

The campaign has been apolitical in nature and has already garnered offers from both the government and opposition of approximately $60M in increases in funding.

The three targets of the campaign are to double the current funding (a target of $94M), to index the funding to ensure it keeps parity and to also protect the amount and indexing of that funding in legislation.

The other threshold that was achieved this week was that we have now surpassed 10,000

individual registrations via our Renew Our Libraries website. For a campaign to receive this many registrations is quite astounding.

This reflects the passion and regard communities across the state hold their libraries in. In addition, approximately 95 individual councils across the state have passed formal resolutions supporting the campaign.

I would personally like to thank all residents across the Riverina for their unwavering support thus far and for any who have

approval by Council staff.

Successful vendors will be required to participate in a survey to determine feasibility of a permanent mobile food vehicle policy.

The Mobile Food Vehicle EOI will be open for 14 days. The deadline for submissions will be 17 December 2018 at 9am, with Council retaining the option to extend this deadline by an additional seven days if an insufficient number of applications are received. Wagga Wagga City Council is advising against the use of Lake Albert due to increased levels of bacteria.

Under National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) guidelines, Council monitors two main types of bacteria in the lake, cyanobacteria (blue green algae) and enterococci. Test results have shown high levels of enterococci, which is caused by faecal matter in the water.

“The community is advised against coming in contact or ingesting the water, until the bacteria levels decrease,” Manager Environment and City

Compliance Mark Gardiner said. “Staff will continue to monitor bacteria levels and update advisory signs as appropriate.

“Unlike blue green algae, enterococci isn’t visible so we please ask that residents pay attention to the advisory signage.”
