Smoke-free CBD? Your chance to have a say on proposed policy The consultation period for a proposal to implement a 12 month trial for a smoke-free area within Wagga Wagga’s CBD launches today.

The proposed trial will prohibit smoking in Baylis Street, Fitzmaurice Street and in Forsyth Street (between Berry Street and Peter Street).

The smoke-free area would be in addition to state legislation that prohibits smoking in alfresco dining areas, and Council’s existing

policy that prohibits smoking within ten metres of the entrance to all Wagga Wagga City Council buildings.

The Director of Planning Andrew Crakanthorp, says it is important that Council hears from the broader community.

“The streets identified for the proposed smokefree areas are within the City’s busiest shopping precinct,” he said.

“We want to hear from everyone that uses it to make sure that we can come up with the best outcome for the community.”

Council News recognised

Council News is now an award winning publication with success at the RH Dougherty Awards held on Thursday night in Sydney.

The annual RH Dougherty Award is held during Local Government Week and recognises and encourages greater understanding and communication by Councils to their local communities.

Wagga Wagga City Council won the Reporting to Your Community (Category B) award for Council News, which was first published in July 2014. More details in next week’s edition.

Give someone legend status

Do you know a dead set legend? Don’t keep it a secret – make sure they get official legend status by nominating them for the 2016 Australia Day Awards.

Nominations were officially launched at a Mayoral Reception on Wednesday 5 August, and it’s now even easier to make sure every little ripper is recognised.

If your mate is a fair dinkum Aussie, just a few words on the back of a postcard is enough to get the nomination ball rolling.

“With Council’s new postcards, all it takes is a brief description of why the nominee deserves legend status,” Wagga Wagga City Council’s Events Coordinator Karly Pieper said.

“You can get your postcards now from the Civic Centre or the Visitor Information Centre. Once completed drop it in or send it to Council and we will contact you to go ahead with the nomination process if it fits within the awards criteria.”

Nominations for 2016

Australia Day Awards can be made for Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year (27 and younger), Walk of Honour Award and the Ted Ryder Sports Memorial Award for contribution to administration in sport.

“Wagga is a great place to live, work and play and our community is full of unsung heroes,” Ms Pieper said.

“Whether they’re a tireless community advocate or longserving volunteer, they all deserve legend status.

“Community groups and residents are encouraged to step up and nominate our everyday champions who have given selflessly to the community for many years.”

The Mayoral Reception to launch the awards included an address by the Mayor, Graham Cotter (Chair, Australia Day Community Committee) and the 2015 Citizen of the Year, Kerry Geale.

Winter winners

Sturt Street road closure

A 350 tonne crane being used by the principle contractor as part of the Court House Redevelopment Project will see the closure of Sturt Street for approximately eight days, commencing Sunday 9 August 2015.

The crane will be used to lift precast concrete panels to all extremities of the new building.

Due to the size of the crane it was not possible to accommodate it within the current worksite.

Detours will be in place via Johnston Street and Fitzmaurice Street.

Access for adjoining residences and businesses will be maintained under 24-hour traffic control.

Congratulations to the owners of this garden in Henwood Avenue for winning the Garden of the Season for Winter 2015!

Judged by members of the Wagga Wagga Tidy Towns Committee, this garden was noted for its attention to detail and singled out as one of the best gardens to ever win the award.

The other winners were Keane Place in Kooringal for Street of the Season, and Lockyer Place in East Wagga for Business Streetscape.

The Chair of the committee, John Rumens encourages all homes and businesses to take pride in their gardens.

GLENFIELD ROAD ANIMAL SHELTER

Wagga CBD parking options on agenda Wagga Wagga City Council will discuss a number of options to improve parking in the City at a forum hosted by the Wagga Wagga Business Chamber.

Council is currently undertaking an Integrated Transport Strategy that will include parking as a key component and is participating in forums such as this to engage stakeholders on the issue.

Potential changes designed to reduce congestion and improve trading conditions for business include changing parallel parking to angled, reviewing the mix of timed parking such as one and two hour limits, and improving pedestrian access, lighting and security for all day parking options.

As part of the consultation process, a parking map has been developed to identify all parking options within the central business area.

The map is available in hard copy at the Civic Centre or downloadable from Council’s website.

Wagga Wagga City Council’s new Glenfield Road Animal Shelter is up and running and Council is now looking to recruit volunteers to work at the shelter. This is a great experience to contribute to the local community, work with animals and meet new people.

There are 15 volunteer placements available for a 6 month period. To apply to be a volunteer, please go to Council’s website to view all the relevant information and complete a Volunteer Application Form.

The past week has seen two events in Wagga Wagga both of which highlight the close relationship between the City and the key

participants in the life of the city.

The first was the Freedom of Entry to the City Parade by RAAF Wagga Wagga.

The parade was a credit to all participants, not just the large contingent of RAAF servicemen but also the contingents from the Royal Australian Navy and the Army. The close coordination between the RAAF band and the contingents from the

three armed services was a credit to those who organised and participated in the parade and ceremony.

The highlight of the morning’s festivities was of course the “ Lap of the Main Street” by the Globemaster transport aircraft. It was an awesome sight as it flew low down the main street!

The daytime activities were complimented by two magnificent concerts by

the RAAF Band in the Civic Theatre.

The ceremony and concerts were a mark of respect to Wagga Wagga by the services. They provide a richness to the cultural life of the city as well as playing a key role in supporting the City‘s economy. Well done to all who participated!

Business hygiene rating on display

Twenty-one local businesses are proudly displaying their commitment to food hygiene by taking part in the Scores on Doors program.

Scores on Doors gives participating businesses the opportunity to show customers just how seriously they take hygiene by displaying a rating certificate.

Council’s Environmental Health Coordinator Sharomi Dayanand said the rating system of Excellent (5 stars), Very Good (4 stars) and Good (3 stars) is an easy way to show the public that the businesses meet the Food Standards Code.

“The Scores on Doors program makes everyone aware that local restaurants,

takeaway, shops and cafés are complying with NSW Hygiene and Food Safety Standards,” she said.

“Visitors and locals alike can then make informed choices about where to eat or shop for food just by checking the certificate.”

Ms Dayanand said Scores on Doors is a great opportunity for food retail businesses to collectively promote their high level of food safety compliance.

“The program promotes and encourages businesses to strive for the highest hygiene score,” she said.

“In Wagga, we’re lucky to enjoy a fantastic range of quality restaurants and food outlets and businesses are encouraged to participate in the

Charles Sturt University. The University has a key place in the City by providing much employment and in many ways giving the City cultural diversity.

The parade was lead by the Highland Pipe Band and comprised a mix of civic leaders and senior University academics and staff. Many participants wore academic dress, highlighting the diversity of talent available to

Big response to waste survey

Meet Jess

This week’s pet of the week is Jess, a 1-yearold female Kelpie. This friendly and intelligent lass appears to be purebred and has the makings of a great working dog. This energetic pup is looking for an active family so she can get her exercise every day and would make a great addition to a family with a large back yard with solid high fences or a farm.

She can be adopted for $323.40 which includes vaccinations, desexing, worming, microchipping, lifetime registration and a vet check.

TRASH TALK: Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall addresses nearly 30 people who turned out to a meeting in Uranquinty to discuss whether or not the community wants to adpot a Council managed kerbside waste collection service.

Thank you to the nearly 4000 residents that took the time to complete their Tipping Point survey!

The survey asked questions relating to a range of waste services such as kerbside waste collection, bulky waste and the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre.

The results are currently being collated and will be included in a report to the September Council Meeting.

Council hereby gives public notice of the exhibition of its intention to introduce a 12 month smoke-free trial within Baylis and Fitzmaurice Streets and in Forsyth Street (between Berry Street and Peter Street) and amend Council’s Smoke-Free Outdoor Areas Policy accordingly. The policy will be on exhibition for a period of 28 days, from Monday, 10 August 2015 until 5pm on Monday 7 September 2015. Inspection of Policy The policy is available for review at Wagga Wagga City Council, Cnr Baylis & Morrow Sts, Wagga Wagga, during the hours of 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday (public holidays excluded) within the above exhibition period.

Council invites public submissions on the draft Policy, to be lodged within the exhibition period.
