Major repairs for Lake Albert Road The first stage towards a complete resurface of one of Wagga Wagga’s main arterial roads will start next month.

Wagga Wagga City Council will start Stage 1 of renewing Lake Albert Road’s surface with works

between Fay Avenue and Lord Baden Powell Drive on Monday 19 November.

Council’s Director Commercial Operations Caroline Angel said this major work is part of an ongoing program to rehabilitate and maintain the extensive local road network.

“This stage of asphalt pavement rehabilitation is the first in a planned multistaged approach towards upgrading Lake Albert

Road,” Ms Angel said.

“Council has an extensive list of road upgrades scheduled in this year’s budget. We are working through that list and achieving success.

“Lake Albert Road has been identified as a priority. Work will start on the first stage of a multistaged project with a focus on renewing the entire surface of this road.”

To minimise inconvenience to

surrounding residents and local traffic, and for the safety of construction staff, the roadworks will be undertaken at night, from 7pm to 6am, via partial and complete road closures of Lake Albert Road.

Weather permitting, the project is scheduled to be completed on the morning of Saturday 8 December.

Local vehicle access will be provided to residents directly impacted by the works.

Stage A: Monday 19 to Thursday 22 November

All northbound lanes closed from 7pm to 6am, between Fay Ave and Lord Baden Powell Drive to address lower structural pavement layers. One southbound lane open. Detour route via Kooringal Road.

Stage B: Monday 26 to Friday 30 November

All southbound lanes closed from 7pm to 6am, between Fay Ave and Lord Baden Powell Drive to address lower structural pavement layers. One northbound lane open. Detour route via Kooringal Road.

Stage C: Monday 3 to Friday 7 December

All four lanes closed from 7pm to 6am, to address final wearing course layer over previously completed areas stages A & B. Detour route via Kooringal Road.

Taste the world at Fusion18 street festival

Wagga Wagga’s premier springtime celebration of live music, food and culture is set to be one of the biggest yet.

Headlining Fusion18 Multicultural Street Festival are Mama Kin Spender, Oh Mercy, Henry Wagons and Woodes. These unique Australian artists promise to bring an eclectic mix of sounds and styles to the Victory Memorial Gardens stage.

With the festival just a week away, the buzz

around this annual event is building. Council’s Director Community Services, Janice Summerhayes, said this year’s festival is expected to attract another huge crowd from across the region and interstate on Saturday 20 October.

“Fusion has gone from strength to strength and we are expecting in excess of 10,000 people to soak up the vibrant festival atmosphere and enjoy a playfully curated program of entertainment, fun activities

and bountiful feasting options,” Ms Summerhayes said.

Food lovers will be able to devour authentic and modern street style bites from 31 countries: Afghanistan, Argentina, China, France, Germany, Greece, India, Iraq, Italy, Korea, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Myanmar, Netherlands, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Slovenia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Thailand, Turkey, United

Kingdom, United States of America, Vietnam & Zimbabwe.

“From Afghani to Zimbabwean, this year there is a wonderland of international food options on offer in the World Food Village,” Ms Summerhayes said.

“Along with our headliners, there is an exciting program of traditional and contemporary performances by community performers as well as back-to-back DJ sets by perennial festival

favourites the Dancing Accountant and Cumbia Massive.

“Roving performers are always a hit and this year there will be everything from bubble-blowing unicorns to New Orleans-style street music.’

The local business spotlight will focus on small and medium sized enterprises in Wagga Wagga later this month as part of Small Business Month in New South Wales.

A free regional workshop opportunity is being offered to 100 small business operators in the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area to help celebrate the contribution SMEs make to local, state and national economies.

Wagga Wagga City Council Economic Development Officer Andrea Crossley said the “Connect for Success” event was an opportunity for business owners to gain an insight into their own business with the help of expert commentators.

“It’s important that we continue to recognise and support local business,” Ms Crossley said.

“Connect For Success

is one opportunity where we can put the focus squarely on local small and medium sized businesses.

“This is an excellent networking opportunity, and also to learn about business growth strategies.”

The workshops “Seven Steps to Small Business Success” and “Sales Out Of The Box” will target many areas including, leadership, marketing, pathways to profit and face-to-face sales amid

the digital revolution.

Connect for Success is a partnership between Council, the NSW Government and Wagga Wagga Business Enterprise Centre. It will be held on Wednesday 24 October at Wagga’s Thirsty Crow Brewery from 5-9pm.

NO-GO FOR SHEFFIELD SHIELD IN CIT Y

Wagga Wagga City Council and Cricket NSW have this week confirmed the Sheffield Shield and Futures League matches in the city this season will not proceed.

Council has had problems with preparing the pitch due to a shortfall in internal expertise to deliver a pitch of the required standard.

There was a wicket inspection at Robertson Oval this week, and while soil has now been sourced from North Sydney Oval and the pitch area is responding well, there is not enough time to prepare a pitch surface to first class cricket standard.

Council General Manager Peter Thompson confirmed that the matches would be played at another venue. Wagga Wagga was being discussed as a possible venue for the matches in mid October and early November.

Council staff have been in talks with Cricket NSW since it was agreed at Council’s 24 September meeting to progress discussions in a bid to secure the match for the city.

The decision was made in consultation with Cricket NSW and one of its appointed curators who visited the city to inspect Robertson Oval.

“Unfortunately, while we now believe the pitch is progressing to meet the required standard, we have run out of time to prepare a wicket,” Mr

Thompson said.

“The inspection revealed there were some issues with the wicket and the time needed to bring it up to standard was not achievable at this stage of discussions.

“Council staff have been proactive in trying to secure a match. We will continue to pursue opportunities with Cricket NSW and we’re confident in achieving that in the longer term.”

Cricket NSW Chief Executive Andrew Jones confirmed Cricket NSW was unable to play a JLT Sheffield Shield match in Wagga Wagga this year.

“However our policy remains to play one Sheffield Shield match in regional NSW/ACT each season and we are keen to bring the Blues back there in the future,” Mr Jones said.

“We have a terrific relationship with Council and appreciate their understanding in this matter. We will continue to explore opportunities to bring elite content to the city.

“We are also actively working to further develop the cricket facilities at Bolton Park and in the broader region.”

Wagga Wagga hosted a Sheffield Shield match at Robertson Oval in 2015 and earlier this year hosted a Women’s Big Bash League doubleheader at the same venue.

PASSION FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE LEADS TO AWARD NOMINATION

Meredith Hester (pictured above) is passionate about excellent customer service.

Mrs Hester is Wagga Wagga City Council’s Team Leader Customer Service and has been short-listed as a finalist in the 2018 National Local Government Customer Service Network Awards.

The awards will be announced at the NLGCSN conference in Brisbane between 17-19 October and Mrs Hester is one of four finalists from across Australia.

“Regardless of the

outcome next week, it’s been a great honour to firstly be nominated and then to be named a finalist alongside some very good other people,” Mrs Hester said.

Mrs Hester started working at Council 12 years ago with traffic administration before switching over to Customer Service after a few weeks.

She now leads a team of seven customer service officers and takes much pride in the service the team offers the city’s residents.

“We are the first point of contact here

at Council,” Mrs Hester said.

“It’s important we’re across all Council business … we get many inquiries about a large range of issues.

There’s 4,000 phone calls that come through the call centre each month, and then there’s the face-to-face contact with visitors to the Civic Centre.

“I’m passionate about providing the community with excellent customer service, and I believe our team delivers and meets community expectations in this area.”

MULTI-PURPOSE STADIUM ANOTHER STEP CLOSER TO COMPLETION

Completion of the multi-purpose stadium (MPS) is a step closer this week with cladding being installed on the external walls.

It’s the latest milestone in the construction of Wagga Wagga’s first MPS. Project Manager Tom Lemerle said work on the stadium is proceeding quickly with air-conditioning and lighting systems also being installed this month.

“The installation of the internal and external windows is almost complete and internal painting has started.

The next major milestone will be the installation of the sprung timber sports floor,” he said.

The $9M project to provide a community, entertainment and highquality sporting space is scheduled to be completed by December, weather permitting.

6000 flock to Spring Jam festival Planning for next year’s Spring Jam is already in the pipeline after the success of this year’s inaugural children’s festival.

About 6000 little people and their grownup friends flocked to Wagga Wagga’s Botanic Gardens for a fun-filled day of song, dance, food and outdoor adventure.

It was a great mix of activity which captivated the large audience and had Spring Jammers giving the festival a big thumbs up for its return next year.

Wagga Wagga City Council Visitor Economy and Events Coordinator Fiona Hamilton said the

first-ever Spring Jam was an overwhelming success and early feedback suggested an even bigger and brighter festival next year.

“We have had extremely positive feedback so far.

It was great to see so many people enjoying the beautiful spring weather and this new event which had so much to offer,” Ms Hamilton said.

“We would like to thank everyone for coming along to support Spring Jam and would now encourage attendees to let us know what they thought of the event to help us plan Spring Jam 2019!”

The second stage of work to complete the new Section 12 at Wagga Wagga’s Lawn Cemetery and Crematorium on Brunskill Road started this month.

The north-eastern corner of the 39-hectare cemetery was developed into Section 12 during Stage 1 of the extension project undertaken last year.

Section 12 has the capacity to accommodate 1300 burial sites for an estimated period of 15 years.

Other long-term initiatives planned are a scatter garden, open air chapel and more landscaping.

In 2018 to date, there have been 193 cremations, 160 burials and 40 ashes interred at the Wagga Wagga Lawn Cemetery and Crematorium.

The remaining 25 repaired solar lights will be reinstalled along the Lake Albert pathway on 17 and 18 October.

The lights were repaired by the supplier following an ant infestation detected in 32 of the lights earlier in the year.

Weather-proof ant bait stations were also installed on the light poles to prevent future ant infestation.

The lights were installed in March 2017 as part of a community project delivered by Committee 4 Wagga, with assistance provided

by Wagga Wagga City Council. Each of the 104 light poles were sponsored by community members, groups or organisations.
