IMPROVEMENTS: The car park on the corner of Fitzmaurice and Crampton streets is sealed as part of the Main City Levee upgrade.

The car park on the corner of Fitzmaurice and Crampton streets will re-open on Monday 8 April with a freshly sealed surface and new accessible footpaths.

A new crib wall was constructed during the closure, undertaken as part of the Main City Levee bank reinforcement and upgrade project.

Works were completed ahead of schedule thanks to the dry weather and the efforts of work crews.

In addition, two sets of stairs and a ramp were built to improve access to the Wiradjuri Walking Track, which runs along the top of the levee. Construction work continues in the vicinity of the car park until May and the Wiradjuri Walking Track remains closed between Johnston Street and Wiradjuri Bridge.

Motorists are advised that two spaces within the car park will remain cordoned off to maintain a buffer between the construction works and parked cars.

Parking is restricted in Cadell Place between Sturt Street and Kincaid Street for another two weeks as work continues to raise the concrete wall height.

The action shifts to another section of the levee during winter, with construction scheduled between Johnston Street and Marshalls Creek Bridge (Hammond Avenue).

RAILWAY STREET ROAD WORKS

Road works will take place on Railway Street on Wednesday 10 April between Lake Albert Road and Beauty Point Avenue.

Council staff will be reinstating the roadway following recent NBN construction. A trench excavated across Railway Street was temporarily backfilled and will be asphalted in two stages to maintain vehicular access.

The area will be under stop/go traffic control and motorists may experience minor delays.

Works will take place between 7am and 5pm.

Do you ever wonder what goes bump in the night?

Grab your torch and head on an adventure with Wagga Wagga City Council staff at the annual Wilks Park After Dark event on Friday 12 April.

During the hour-and-a-half adventure you’ll spot nocturnal wildlife as they scurry and squawk through Wilks Park in North Wagga.

“Wilks Park After Dark is held each year to highlight the many native nocturnal animals and birds that live

in Wagga Wagga, many of which are threatened species,” Council’s Environmental Education Officer Sam Parsell said.

“On the guided tour you’ll learn about the rehabilitation works that have been undertaken to enhance the area for our locally threatened squirrel glider population.

“You’ll also spot plenty of possums in the trees and if you’re lucky, barking owls.”

The free tour takes place from 7pm to 8.30pm, with attendees to meet at

the Wilks Park car park off Hampden Avenue in North Wagga.

If you want to take part in the outdoor adventure, please reserve your place by contacting Ms Parsell on 1300 292 442.

Walkers will also need sturdy, enclosed footwear and warm clothing. Council staff have a limited number of spotlights available.

GREAT WORK!

Despite not meeting our target it is a great result and one we should all be proud of.

The kerbside waste audit indicated that 32% of the red lid bin by weight is still food waste. Let’s work towards sending all our food waste to the green lid bin.

Paper + cardboard can be composted!

Paper and cardboard can also go in the green lid bin, particularly small pieces of paper, shredded paper, soiled paper and paper towel.

Top tips!

Year one is now done. Let’s continue this great work in separating our waste and divert even more waste over the coming year from landfill.

Remove food waste from plastic wrapping before placing in the green lid bin.

Shredded paper, paper towel, tissues, receipts, toilet paper rolls and newspaper are all perfect in the green lid bin.

Animal waste should go in the red lid bin.

PLENTY ON IN WEEK TWO OF FRESH Headlining week two of the month-long Fresh festival is a TED-style talk by Father Rod Bower (pictured).

Fr Bower is known for his thought-provoking billboards at the Gosford Anglican Church, which have made national headlines.

In his talk titled “Reshaping our moral imagination: Turning good people in to just people”, the Archdeacon of the Central Coast will tackle how to create a world that’s inclusive and respectful of everyone.

Fr Bower crosses beyond the realm of religion and into social justice, which saw him receive the 2016 Doha International Award for Interfaith Dialogue and be named Abyssinian of the year by the Muslim community.

The hunt is on for a community group or organisation to take the lead on Wagga Wagga’s 2019 New Year’s Eve celebrations.

If you think you can help Wagga Wagga say goodbye to 2019 by bringing the good vibes in the form of a festival, concert or precinct party, then now is your time to shine.

Wagga Wagga City Council is offering up to $50,000 financial sponsorship for a community group or organisation to run the event.

“More than 10,000 people attend Wagga Wagga’s New Year’s Eve celebrations each year,” Visitor Economy and Events Co-ordinator Fiona Hamilton said.

“Interested community groups, organisations, business owners and individuals are encouraged

to contact our Visitor Economy and Events team and talk about their ideas.

“This is a unique opportunity for a new event or something similar to previous New Year’s Eve celebrations. Whatever format it takes, it must be community-focused with a wide audience appeal.”

The event is a chance to get exposure for a club, group, charity or business and raise funds through stallholders, business sponsorship or ticketed VIP areas.

Applications are open now until 3 May 2019.

Invitation to apply for funding from the ClubGRANTS Scheme

Wagga Wagga City Council as the coordinator for ClubGRANTS is now inviting applications for funding towards your local community service needs and priorities from the ClubGRANTS scheme. The ClubGRANTS scheme allows registered clubs with annual gaming machine revenue exceeding $1 million to apply a percentage of that revenue to specific development and support projects. At least 50% of funding from each club is to be allocated to Category 1 projects.
