Ready, Jet, Go! Wagga Riverina residents may be able to fly direct from Wagga Wagga to Brisbane in the near future.

JETGO’s 36-seat Embraer ERJ-135LR Regional Jet aircraft can reach speeds of 850km/h, with the Wagga to Brisbane flight taking just 1 hour and 40 minutes.

The City of Wagga Wagga and JETGO have been in discussions about establishing

a Brisbane route for a number of months.

“More than 200,000 passengers pass through Wagga Wagga Airport each year and the potential of bringing a direct route to/from Brisbane is exciting for Wagga Wagga and the broader region,” Director Commercial and Economic Development James Bolton said.

“The addition of a Brisbane route would be a positive outcome for tourism, visiting friends and relatives as well as improving business links to Queensland.

“Council is working with the airline to ensure the proposed service is viable, which may include some concessions while the route is established.”

JETGO has proposed an initial schedule of four flights per week, which would boost traffic through the airport by about one thousand passengers a month.

JETGO’s Managing Director Airlines Paul Bredereck said Wagga Wagga is the logical next step for the airline following successfully opening up new direct routes

from Brisbane to Tamworth, Dubbo and Albury over the past 18 months.

“Wagga Wagga is a very important city with strong links to South East Queensland and this new service would provide stronger business access, better family connectivity and as we have seen from our other New South Wales destinations better access to medical services,” he said.

“The time savings and the superior comfort of the jet has also proven to be extremely popular.”

Grab your torch and head on an adventure with City of Wagga Wagga staff at the annual Wilks Park After Dark event on Friday 9 September.

“Wilks Park After Dark is held each year to celebrate Threatened Species Day and National Biodiversity Month,” Council’s Environmental Coordinator Tony Phelps said.

“On the guided tour you’ll learn about the rehabilitation works that have been undertaken to enhance the area for our locally threatened squirrel glider population.

“You’ll also spot plenty of possums in the trees and if you’re lucky, barking owls.”

The free tour takes place from 7pm to 8.30pm, with attendees to meet in the car park in Wilks Park off Hampden Avenue.

Walkers will also need sturdy, enclosed footwear and warm clothing. Council staff will have spotlights available, but feel free to bring your own torch.

COUNCIL TAKES HOME PRESTIGIOUS RISK MANAGEMENT AWARD The City of Wagga Wagga has taken home the major honour from the Statewide Risk Management Excellence Awards.

Council entered its Risk Management Framework for the prestigious industry event and was judged the overall winner for NSW. “This is great news and fantastic recognition for the best practice work undertaken to date by Council’s Governance team on developing and implementing the Risk Management Framework,” Director Corporate Services Craig Richardson said.

“This award reflects Council’s commitment to developing a

culture of improved integration and understanding of relevant risks.

“The principles and practices in the framework are designed to result in informed, transparent decision making, which improves outcomes for the community.”

Strategic Partner - Corporate Governance & Risk Nicole Johnson attended the conference and accepted the award, which recognises excellence in the implementation of a risk management program using the principles of identification, evaluation, control and measure.

The awards and conference were held in Sydney on 25 August.

STUDENTS’ WORK LIGHTS UP CIT Y BrightLights 2016, a projection made up of works from local school student, was officially launched on Thursday.

The compilation of student artworks will be screened on the lagoon side of the Civic Centre for three weeks, starting

at 6pm each night.

Meanwhile, expressions of interest are still being sought from leading Australian projection artists for the City of Wagga Wagga NightLights program.

The successful artist will be commissioned to

deliver a site-specific work to be presented in June 2017, as well as lead a five-day master class program for local emerging artists.

The vision for a Wagga Wagga of the future is taking shape.

In May and June more than 2500 aspirations for the Wagga of tomorrow were captured from residents across the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area during the Wagga View – Our Future in Focus community consultation.

Since this time the City of Wagga Wagga has carefully themed each of the individual wishes, ideas and responses to create the foundations for the city’s new Community Strategic Plan (CSP).

The CSP, previously known as Ruby & Oliver, is not a Council plan, it’s a plan developed by the community for the community.

“We would like to thank the Wagga community for playing their part in the Wagga View consultation. We were blown away by the diverse mix of suggestions and wishes from the community,” Corporate Strategy Coordinator Serena Wallace said.

“The themes from these community sessions cover everything from our community identity to the environment in which we live.

“We are now at the point of turning these community aspirations for the future into a reality.”

For this to happen,the City of Wagga Wagga held two community stakeholder engagement sessions this week to help determine the strategies and actions for the new CSP. The first stakeholder session was held on Wednesday 31 August and the second session held on Friday 2 September.

These sessions attracted interest from a range of businesses, organisations and community groups, including NSW Police, Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD), NSW Department of Family and Community Services and Wagga Women’s Health Centre.

Coordinator Brendan Pearson said opportunities to engage with local partners were imperative.

“Health and wellbeing in our community is generated through the settings where we live our everyday lives such as our streets, neighbourhoods, parks, town centres and workplaces. The City of Wagga Wagga is responsible for planning and delivering these settings so it makes really good sense to partner in this CSP project,” Mr Pearson said.

All information gathered from the engagement sessions will help formulate the draft CSP. This will then be placed on public exhibition for one last round of community consultation to make sure the vision is accurate, before going to Council for adoption.

The CSP also helps inform all of Council’s documents and strategies, such as the Local Environment Plan, Development Control Plan and the Wagga Wagga Integrated Transport Strategy.

ADD YOUR VOICE TO WAGGA’S COMMUNITY CHOIR

Do you like to sing in the shower? Maybe you’re a pop star in your car?

Everyone has a voice and the Civic Theatre needs yours.

This year’s community production is One Voice: Wagga Community Choir with the sultan of sing Dr Jonathon Welch AM. The Civic Theatre has partnered with Dr Welch, the man behind the well-known Choir of Hard Knocks, for two huge performances at the Botanic Gardens Music Bowl this November.

Theatre Manager Carissa

Campbell said the choir is open to anyone.

“There are no auditions, you just have to fill out the form and have the time to take part in the rehearsals and both performances,” she said.

“We’ve already had an overwhelming response with people from all levels of experience signing up.

“Everyone has a voice and it doesn’t matter whether you think you’re terrible or terrific – there’s plenty of room for you in the One Voice choir.”

The choir’s performances will also be held as part of

Social Inclusion Week, which aims to make everyone feel valued and part of the community.

Along with being the artistic director of the Choir of Hard Knocks as seen on ABC TV, Dr Welch is the creator of Social Inclusion Week.

Throughout his career he has earned ARIA, Logie and Helpmann awards, as well as being recognised with the Australian of the Year Local Hero Award in 2008.

Dr Welch will be the choral conductor for the two One Voice performances, which will be held from 7.30pm on

18 and 19 November.

“If we can’t convince you to sing, then come along and support the choir at one of the performances,” Ms Campbell said.

“It’s a guaranteed night of family fun. You can bring a picnic to enjoy or there will be food vendors at the music bowl.”

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children under 15 and are available now from civictheatre.com.au, where you can also register your interest to join the choir.

Choir rehearsals will be held in October.

GREEN THUMBS HONOURED Winter’s greenest thumbs were recognised this week at the Tidy Town Sustainable Community Committee’s Street of the Season and Garden of the Season presentation.

Residents of Protea Place, Brunslea Park were honoured with the title of Street of the Season and a resident of Sackville Drive, Forest Hill was awarded Garden of the Season.

The Street of the Season and Garden of the Season awards provide important recognition to

the residents of Wagga Wagga that take pride in the appearance of the city, local streets and suburbs.

Bomen roads project starting soon as contracts exchanged Work will begin within a month on a multimillion-dollar project to unlock hundreds of hectares of industrial zoned land at Bomen Business Park.

Negotiations have been finalised and contracts were exchanged with the successful tenderer BMD Constructions at the weekend.

BMD Constructions will be undertaking more than $23M in works, co-funded by all three levels of government.

NSW Treasurer and Minister for Industrial Relations Gladys Berejiklian, Member for Riverina and Minister for Small Business Michael McCormack and

Member for Wagga Wagga Daryl Maguire also attended the exchange to mark the federal, state and local partnership.

“Within 12 months these empty paddocks at Bomen Business Park will be transformed into new roads and a rail underpass,” City of Wagga Wagga’s Acting General Manager Janice Summerhayes said.

“The contract exchange is an important milestone and this project is a prime example of local government, the NSW Government and the Federal Government working in partnership.”

The works will include closing

the Dampier Street level crossing and building an underpass, as well as constructing link roads to Bomen Road and Byrnes Road.

The entire $35M (ex GST) project will vastly improve road safety in the area, address existing productivity constraints, cater for future traffic demand and better link the industrial precinct with the Olympic and Sturt highways.

The NSW Government has committed $8.3M toward the construction and the Federal Government has committed $14.5M from the Federal Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development.

Wagga’s litter legends inspiring others to ‘Pick It Up’ Wagga Wagga is fortunate to have many everyday champions who pick up litter while out and about to help keep our environment beautiful.

To acknowledge this fantastic community effort, Wagga’s new Pick It Up campaign was officially launched on Thursday morning at a special pop-up stall by the shores of Lake Albert.

“We already know there are many people in Wagga who do the right thing to help care for our environment,” Environmental Education Officer Alice Kent said.

“This initiative is about

recognising local litter legends and acknowledging that every contribution, no matter how small, can go a long way.

“If every resident in Wagga picked up just one piece of rubbish every day for a year more than 23 million pieces of litter could be removed from the environment.”

Representatives from the City of Wagga Wagga and Wagga’s Tidy Town Sustainable Community Committee were on hand on Thursday to gift bags made from recycled plastic bottles to people who attended the pop-up stall.

The bags acknowledge each litter legends’ good deed and

could inspire others to ‘Pick It Up’.

“We know there are many great people out there doing their bit for the environment, and now with the bags, others will know too,” Miss Kent said.

“When you pick up rubbish you never know who might spot you in the community and be inspired to do the same.”

A wall of faces with photos of each litter legend was also started at the Lake Albert event. About 20 faces now make up the photo collage, which is being used to show the community’s proactive and positive commitment to a cleaner and healthier city.

LITTER LEGEND: Wagga woman Susan Weisser picks up litter every day on her walk around Lake Albert. Susan was thanked for her efforts and gifted with a reusable bag, made from recycled plastic bottles, by Environmental Education Officer Alice Kent.
