Star-studded line up for comedy fest It’s no laughing matter – grab your tickets early for the Wagga Comedy Fest or risk serious disappointment.

Last year all-but two of the 11 shows sold out and with another hilarious line up assembled for the 2019 festival, tickets are already being snapped up.

This year’s festival features Anh Do, Anne Edmonds, Becky Lucas, Lano & Woodley, Luke McGregor, Mel Buttle, the Melbourne

International Comedy Festival roadshow, Randy the puppet, Rhys Nicholson, The Chaser and the Riverina Comedy Club.

The popular Winter Markets will also be back again, with hot food and free laughs on offer.

Now in its fifth year, Civic Theatre Manager Carissa Campbell said the Wagga Comedy Fest has no signs of slowing up anytime soon.

“We created the Wagga Comedy Fest in 2015 to provide a unique event in the winter and offer a more diverse range of comedy shows in the city,” Ms Campbell said.

“Since then, more than 8000

people have been to the comedy festival, we’ve hosted 51 performances and made national headlines when comedian Wil Anderson was arrested on his flight to Wagga Wagga.

“The festival has evolved each year and 2019 will be the biggest yet, with five shows at the Civic Theatre and six in the Riverina Playhouse.”

Ms Campbell said the Wagga Comedy Fest and the city has earned a reputation as a comedy hotspot.

“It’s great to have much-loved comedians like Anh Do and Luke McGregor return to the Wagga

Comedy Fest after appearing in the first festival back in 2015.

“It’s also been encouraging to see the growth of Wagga Wagga’s own comedy scene. Dane Simpson has honed his skills at the festival since 2015 and this year the Riverina Comedy Club will be hosting a night of fun at the Riverina Playhouse.”

Soft plastics don’t go in the yellow lid bin. Soft plastics go in the red lid bin or in the soft plastic collection bins at major supermarkets.

E-waste and electrical items don’t go in the yellow lid bin. Recycle e-waste for free at Gregadoo Waste Management Centre and Kurrajong Recycling.

An extra 18% of red lid bin contents could be diverted from landfill through separate drop-offs for soft plastics, e-waste and hazardous items like paint and batteries.

Your food organics and garden organics waste gets turned into beautiful compost, instead of going to landfill and contributing to climate change.

Scores on Doors program promotes hygiene Wagga Wagga businesses continue to embrace the Scores on Doors program in a show of commitment to outstanding food hygiene at restaurants and eateries across the city.

Sixty-six local businesses are now proudly displaying the Scores on Doors rating certificate, which gives participants the opportunity to show customers just how seriously they take hygiene.

Council’s Environmental Health Coordinator Sharomi Dayanand said the rating system of Excellent (5 stars), Very Good (4 stars) and Good (3 stars) is an easy way to show the public that local businesses are meeting the Food Standards Code.

“The Scores on Doors program makes everyone

aware that local restaurants, takeaway premises, shops and cafés are complying with NSW hygiene and food safety standards,” Ms Dayanand said.

“Visitors and locals alike can then make informed choices about where to eat or shop for food just by checking the certificate.”

Ms Dayanand said Scores on Doors is a great opportunity for food retail businesses to collectively promote their high level of food safety compliance.

“The program promotes and encourages businesses to strive for the highest hygiene score,” she said.

“In Wagga, we’re lucky to enjoy a fantastic range of quality restaurants and food outlets and businesses are encouraged to participate

in the program to reap the benefits.”

Ms Dayanand also urged food businesses to ensure their operation is compliant with regulation under The Food Act 2003.

“It’s important for business operators to notify Council of their food business premises,” Ms Dayanand said.

If you have a food business and wish to sign up to the Scores and Doors program, download a Participation Agreement form from wagga. nsw.gov.au/scoresondoors or contact Council’s Environmental Health team on 1300 292 442.

Residents can also visit the list of participating local businesses and their scores at Council’s website.

The much-loved donkey family at the Botanic Gardens Zoo has a lot to celebrate – Bubba’s first birthday, the renovations to their home are complete and mum Jenny is due soon with her third foal.

Jenny’s quest for love captured the hearts of the Wagga Wagga community in 2014 and it took nearly a year to find her Mr Right. The community took inspiration from the on-screen couple in the movie Forrest Gump and named Jenny’s beau Forrest when he made the move to the city from Tamworth in 2015.

The community have gone on to name their offspring in line with the movie, with Forrest

Jr born in 2017 and Bubba celebrating his first birthday on 26 March.

Party hats and cake were on offer for the birthday boy, with visitors to the zoo singing him happy birthday throughout the day.

The Gumps have also had their home renovated, with the new donkey enclosure featuring more space to run around, new grass, shelters and more.

The Botanic Gardens Zoo is home to a diverse mix of native and other animals, many of which are free to roam. The zoo and aviary are currently open from 9am to 5pm each day.

HER SOUND, HER STORY A HIGHLIGHT OF FRESH It’s on again for young and old this April, with a month-long program of talks, workshops and events designed to bring the community together.

Fresh creatively combines Seniors Week and Youth Week celebrations into a new way to explore and experience this fun, diverse and engaging program.

Week one of the Fresh program features all-ages music gig, historic pub tours, wine appreciation, art events, kimchi workshop and more.

Did you know the collective term for a group of cats is a clowder?

The team at the Glenfield Road Animal Shelter are up to their ears in felines of all shapes and sizes.

Long-haired, short-haired, young or older – but all cute and cuddly!

Sixteen cats and kittens came to the shelter in just 24 hours this week, so if there’s a small, kittyshaped hole in your life now is the time to fill it.

All animals adopted from the shelter come desexed, microchipped, lifetime registered, vaccinated, wormed and with an ID tag. Adoption prices range from $201.50 for males and $231.50 for females.

COUNCIL AND TAFE NSW HELP TURN CARS INTO CAREERS

A unique partnership between Council and TAFE NSW is taking abandoned cars off the streets and turning them into a hands-on learning tool for aspiring tradies.

Council has supplied three abandoned and impounded vehicles to TAFE NSW Wagga Wagga, with Automotive Refinishing and Body Repair students using them to develop their panel beating and spray painting skills.

“We know that this is not just benefiting one lot of students, but year after year there will be different skills that can be developed using these cars,” Council’s Director Community Janice Summerhayes said.

“This innovative partnership keeps abandoned vehicles off the streets and provides a valuable learning tool for TAFE students.

“We impound 15 to 20 vehicles each year and the ones that aren’t going to TAFE will be sold via an expression of interest process in the coming weeks.”
