Wagga Wagga welcomes new citizens

Australia Day honours The achievements of an impressive line-up of public spirited and hardworking citizens were celebrated at Wagga Wagga’s Australia Day Awards ceremony this week.

Eleven residents were nominated in recognition of their contribution to the community, five nominated for the recently established Environmental Citizen of the Year Award.

Belinda Crain was named 2021 Citizen of the Year for her outstanding contribution to multiculturalism through her work with

the Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga.

Over many years Ms Crain has dedicated herself to supporting new members of our local community and has developed the Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga into an organisation able to support the needs of diverse communities.

Ms Crain has been instrumental in supporting families and individuals to establish themselves in our community and to make Wagga Wagga their home, including helping community members gain qualifications leading to employment.

Clare Lawlor was named the 2021 Young Citizen of the Year. Ms Lawlor founded the Charles Sturt University Wagga Wagga Rotaract Club, a global organisation empowering students and young professionals to create positive and lasting change in themselves, their local

community and around the world.

Edward Maher of Wagga Wagga Urban Landcare was named the 2021 Environmental Citizen of the Year. Mr Maher has shown a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, establishing partnerships with local businesses and organisations to educate people about revegetation, weed control and community engagement.

The 2021 Walk of Honour Inductee Award was posthumously awarded to Bill Jacob. Mr Jacob spent over 40 years championing athletics in Wagga Wagga, and was one of the founding members of the Kooringal-Wagga Athletics Club.

His award was accepted by his wife, Robin Jacob.

Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Cr Greg Conkey OAM said Australia Day was a time to recognise achievement and excellence, and to acknowledge our history.

“It is a time to recognise what is great about this country and the people who have made this country great,” Cr Conkey said.

“It’s also a time to reflect on our history and our treatment of our First Nations people.

“We should never forget our past and the injustices inflicted as we

come together to celebrate in a spirit of reconciliation.”

In that spirit, the nation’s updated anthem, featuring the new lyrics ‘for we are one and free’, was sung by Jazmin Castle of Turvey Park Primary School and Max Schneider of Mater Dei Primary School. The pair, who also sang Under Southern Skies with the Australian Army Band Kapooka, were joint winners of the National Anthem Competition.

The Australia Day Awards were live streamed from the Civic Theatre on Monday 25 January 2021.

Celebrations at Botanic Gardens Citizenship Ceremony

In one of the largest Citizenship Ceremonies held on an Australia Day in Wagga Wagga, 41 people from nations across the world pledged their loyalty to Australia on Tuesday 26 January 2021.

The Citizenship Ceremony was a highlight of the city’s Australia Day celebrations held at the Botanic Gardens, which included a free community breakfast and live entertainment throughout the morning.

Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM told those gathered that Australia Day was a day to reflect, respect and celebrate.

“I would particularly like to welcome those of you receiving your Australian Citizenship today and extend that welcome to your family, friends, and your special guests,” Cr Conkey said.

“It’s wonderful to have so many cultures represented here today.

You bring with you many traditions, beliefs, abilities and talents to add to the vibrancy of this great land.

“I know you will never forget where you have come from – and nor should you – your past has made you the person you are today and will also make Australia what it becomes tomorrow.”

The new citizens came to Wagga Wagga from

Egypt (11), India (6), the Philippines (5), Pakistan (4), Iran (4), Liberia (1), the United States of America (2), Nepal (1), Vietnam (1), Malaysia (1), Bangladesh (1), Austria (1), Myanmar (1), and the Republic of Ireland (1).

Wagga Wagga’s Australia Day Ambassador, Wiradjuri Elder Uncle Dr Stan Grant Senior AM delivered his speech via a video message played during the ceremony.

“We’ve got to learn to live with each, learn to get on with each other, be together, be one people in this country,” he said.

“This country is big enough for all of us settle into and to love.

work together. I don’t care what nationality you are; you are here in Australia and this is our country, your country.”

In wrapping up his speech, Cr Conkey spoke about the challenges the Wagga Wagga and broader Australian community had faced over the past 12 months, in the form of bushfires followed soon after by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s in these times of adversity, that Australians unite and the very best in human nature comes to the fore,” Cr Conkey said.

“The generosity shown by the Wagga Wagga community following the bushfires has continued throughout the pandemic, with help and assistance provided to various agencies helping those less fortunate.

“It shows what a caring, compassionate city, region and country we live in, and there is no better day than Australia Day to celebrate this unique aspect of being an Australian.”

The official ceremony concluded with the singing of the National Anthem by 12-year-olds Jazmin Castle and Max Schneider, accompanied by the Australian Army Band Kapooka.

Positive trends on reducing household waste Wagga Wagga City Council is encouraged to see a growing change in attitude amongst residents about what to do with their unwanted household items.

More than 2,200 residents from across the Local Government Area were involved as sellers or shoppers in the Garage Sale Trail held in November 2020, with 41 individual sales and five group sales.

Council’s Environmental Education Officer Alice Kent said the Impact Report for Wagga Wagga's Garage Sale Trail 2020 reveals some positive trends in behaviour change among participants.

“Just by taking part, those people have become more aware of waste creation and

how easy it is to accrue items you no longer or only rarely use,” Ms Kent said.

“By decluttering their homes, they’re now a bit more mindful of what items they’re purchasing and how they dispose of them.

“More than 80 per cent of residents stated they were more likely to reduce waste after holding a garage sale, while 23 per cent indicated they were now more likely to buy second-hand furniture.

“They’re reassessing how much stuff that they actually need in their household to live a happy existence and it might affect what and how they purchase in the future.”

Not only was it an opportunity for sale hosts to

declutter and to find a new home for their unwanted items, the event also provided an opportunity to make some money.

According to the survey, $17,187 changed hands at local Garage Sale Trail events.

Ms Kent said for 72 per cent of the sellers, it was the first time they had hosted a garage sale, and they would not have held one if it had not been for the Garage Sale Trail.

“They needed that little nudge to participate, but the benefit was connecting with neighbours and meeting people who they otherwise might not have met,” Ms Kent said.

we are going to them for support. Council has worked hard in both formulating a solution for the Lake and advocating that solution to the NSW Government. For this work and advocacy to be undermined by the actions of one councillor who put her political party career before the interests of our community is something which should be clearly understood in the

community.

We all know the old saying 'don’t bite the hand that feeds you'. Well, Councillor Keenan’s column in my opinion took the whole arm. If the solution for Lake Albert is not supported by the Minister for Water next week, I know where I will be looking to find what went wrong.

Zoo opening hours to change as school resumes If you are planning a trip to the Wagga Zoo & Aviary at the Botanic Gardens from next week onwards, be aware the opening hours are about to change.

Manager Parks & Strategic Operations Henry Pavitt said to coincide with the start of Term 1 of the 2021 school year, the zoo will once again be closed to visitors on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
