Council to drive development at Bomen The long-term growth of the Bomen industrial precinct has taken a significant step forward, with Wagga Wagga City Council purchasing a 251-hectare parcel of land between the rail line and the Olympic Highway.

The purchase of the land will align Council and the NSW Government’s strategies to

create one of the state’s most attractive precincts for industrial investment, which will drive economic development and job creation for the Wagga Wagga region.

“The acquisition of this land is a pivotal step in the development of the RiFL Hub and ongoing growth of Bomen Business Park, giving Wagga Wagga the ability to drive economic development in the region for years to come,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said.

“The land is in a prime location within Bomen and will assist in attracting further public and private investment to Wagga Wagga, which will have substantial flow-on

effects for all services and industries in the region.”

The NSW Government identified Wagga Wagga as a Special Activation Precinct, which means it is a key location for NSW Government investment from the $4.2B Snowy Hydro Legacy fund.

Super-fast digital connectivity, enabling infrastructure like water, sewer and roads and fast-tracked planning approvals are just three of the benefits being supported by NSW Government investment.

General Manager Peter Thompson said the purchase of the land by Council supports the significant investment made by the NSW

Government and the Federal Government throughout Bomen.

“Council has secured some of the most strategic employment-generating land in NSW,” Mr Thompson said. “We have taken the lead on the future growth of the city and can set out how this land is developed to benefit the region and Wagga Wagga.

“As we work towards a city of 100,000 people, the Bomen industrial precinct will drive growth and lead the way on achieving the community’s vision for Wagga Wagga - more housing options, better transport routes, a wide range of entertainment options and the creation of more jobs and better jobs.”

Prior to the start of the service only 45% of respondents liked or really liked the idea of the new service.

Between March and May 2019 Council sought your feedback on the first year of the new kerbside waste service through the ‘Your Waste Survey’.

2,814 surveys were completed either online or returned via reply paid envelope.

After the first year, 71% of respondents indicated they were either satisfied or very satisfied with the kerbside waste service.

Examples of what you said: “There was a small adjustment period but once we got the hang of it, it was all good. It has made me stop and think about our waste and try to have less.

We even have room in our red and yellow lid bins at the end of the fortnight”.

“Still prefer the red bin to be collected weekly.”

“I would really love to see the yellow bin collected weekly. I find that my green and red bins are rarely half full. But I always have trouble with the amount of recyclables I have.”

“I would like to see the red bin being the same size as the green and yellow bins.”

City's NRL match hailed a success Further improvements at the Exhibition Centre in the vicinity of $1.7M will take place following the highly successful NRL match in Wagga Wagga on 4 May. The game between the Canberra Raiders and Penrith Panthers is part of a multi-year agreement between Council and the ACT-based club.

Planned works include an additional exit from Kooringal Road to the Exhibition Centre to Kooringal, the construction of the southern hill, works to improve accessibility such as wheelchair compliant spaces, further permanent seating and other amenity improvements.

Whether it’s a leisurely stroll by the river with a coffee, a picnic with family or dinner and drinks with friends – Council has put the call out for food businesses at the Riverside precinct.

Wrapping along Wagga Wagga’s CBD, the $1M Stage 1 of the Riverside Master Plan was completed in 2014, with the $6.7M Stage 2 works to be completed by late 2020.

Stage 2 will see large spaces created that can cater for festivals, markets and other events, as well as infrastructure for pop-up shops.

Expressions of interest for three-to-four container food venues are now open, with Council keen to involve the successful business in the design process for Stage 2.

“Council is proposing to have three or four food venue offerings included and submissions for all kinds of venues will be considered,” Acting Manager City Strategy Ben Creighton said.

“Submissions are being sought during the planning phase of Riverside Stage 2 to allow the successful applicant to contribute to the location, layout and design of the containerised venue.

“The containerised venues offered will be constructed from converted shipping containers that will allow for their removal

when a flood event is predicted."

Also included in Stage 2 will be a refurbished parking area, a playground with some water play components, additional amenities, further improvements to the paths, as well as more barbecue shelters and picnic furniture.

The Riverside Master Plan was developed in 2009 after extensive community consultation. It is estimated to boost yearly visitor numbers to Wagga Wagga by 10 per cent to 1.42M, as well as increasing the time they spend in the region.

“The aim of the Riverside project is to reactivate the Wagga Beach precinct and develop the area as a focal point and destination for residents and visitors, as well as create linkages to the city’s CBD and existing civic precinct,” Mr Creighton said.

Expressions of interest are also open for the Civic Centre café, with the option to establish a coffee cart at the forecourt facing Baylis Street. The Civic Centre is open daily and houses Council’s head office and civic headquarters, customer service, the Wagga Wagga City Library and Wagga Wagga Art Gallery.

1. Use dry, seasoned, untreated wood.

The logs should make a ‘crack’ when struck together not a ‘dull thud’ 2. Stack wood under cover in a dry ventilated area 3. Use small logs and place them in your heater in a way that ensures air can circulate freely

4. Burn the fire brightly. Run the heater on a high burn rate (air control fully open) for 5 minutes before and 15 to 20 minutes after adding logs 5. Don’t let your heater smoulder overnight – keep the air control open enough to maintain a flame. A wellinsulated house will stay warmer longer.

COMEDY BRINGING NEW CROWDS TO THEATRE

Are you one of 3573 people still recovering from the side-splitting fun of the 2019 Wagga Comedy Fest?

Held earlier this month, the fifth festival has been declared another success, with thousands flocking to 12 shows across Council’s Civic Theatre and the CSU Playhouse, as well as enjoying the food and free entertainment at the Winter Markets.

This year’s line up included Anh Do, Becky Lucas, Lano & Woodley, Luke McGregor, Mel Buttle, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival roadshow, Randy the puppet, Rhys Nicholson, The Chaser and the Riverina Comedy Club.

Civic Theatre Manager and festival organiser Carissa Campbell said comedy is bringing new audiences to theatre.

“Wagga Comedy Fest is a great way to showcase the Civic Theatre, with 37 per cent of festival-goers coming to the theatre for the first time,” Ms Campbell said.

“A quarter of attendees were also from outside Wagga Wagga.

“We had more shows in the larger Civic Theatre venue this year, which meant more availability of tickets to access new audiences.

“The feedback so far has been all positive – 95 per cent

Last week I outlined the three biggest decisions I believe Wagga Wagga City Council has made in the seven years I have been on Council.

Two of those decisions have involved the city’s industrial area at Bomen, which will be the city’s main economic driver for generations to come.

Five years ago, Council approved spending $35M to improve access into and around the industrial precinct.

Included was a railway line underpass to eliminate a road black spot, a roundabout and a road through to the Olympic Highway.

The work was designed to not only open up the area for development, but also entice private enterprise to build an intermodal freight

And it has paid off.

Work will start shortly on the rail spur line, which then opens the way for the construction of the intermodal facility.

On the back of that project, the NSW Government has announced Bomen as a Special Activation Precinct, which opens up additional opportunities for businesses to relocate to the area.

The second biggest decision was to purchase additional industrial land within the precinct.

This gives the NSW Government even greater incentives to provide infrastructure and services to the area knowing it will be spent on Councilowned land and not on land owned by private developers.

And the third biggest decision?

That was the decision to go out to tender for the upgrade of the Main City Levee and to investigate options for North Wagga.

Work is well underway on the Main City Levee, which when completed in April next year will provide a 1 in 100 year level of protection for the CBD and the thousands of people who reside in central Wagga Wagga.

The special rate variation currently being collected for the levee includes additional protection for North Wagga residents with a feasibility study to be underway to look at options.
