Theatre's new season adventure The Civic Theatre launched its 2021 Subscription Season this week (Wednesday 24 February) with a year of entertainment to escape the everyday and explore the joy of discovery.

Local audiences can look forward to a program of the highest standard, full of big players and audience favourites alongside the new and dynamic work.

“2021 is all about exploration and

adventure,” Civic Theatre Manager Carissa Campbell said.

“We know that many travel plans have been disrupted this year, so we invite everyone to travel with us in 2021 and satisfy your wanderlust.”

Some of Australia’s leading companies, such as Bell Shakespeare and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, will deliver performances, together with a more contemporary offering of improvised theatre and cabaret performances.

In 2020, the Civic Theatre presented a short run of cabaret shows as part of Re-Ignite; a series of live performances to emerge from COVID closures and to keep local artists and arts staff employed.

“Initially it was a creative way for us to

embrace and celebrate our reduced COVID Safe capacities, but it was so well received we are recreating our intimate cabaret lounge on the stage again this year!” Ms Campbell said.

Voyagers is a cabaret, commissioned by the Civic Theatre, from Wagga Wagga writer and performer Andrew Strano, who has been living, working and studying in New York.

It was due to premiere as part of last year’s season, but was postponed when the theatre was forced to cancel much of its 2020 calendar due to COVID-19.

“We are thrilled that we were able to reschedule Voyagers for August this year,” Ms Campbell said.

JUNIOR STATE CUP TOUCH TITLES BACK IN WAGGA WAGGA THIS WEEKEND

Wagga Wagga City Council and NSW Touch Association (NSWTA) will again host the Junior State Cup Southern Conference carnival in the city this weekend with a revised structure to ensure a COVID Safe event.

NSWTA General Manager Dean Russell said the changed format complies with current NSW Health Public Health Orders and is similar to the format used for the 2020 State Cup. He said this model limits the number of teams to the 179 entries received, but it has the potential to deliver more significant economic benefits to the local community.

“The Arrive Play Leave format, which we successfully used at our senior event, really allows our participants and their families more time to explore the region,” Mr Russell said.

“They will be able to visit more places – something they previously have been

limited in doing while at the fields most of the day.

“We ran this format at our senior State Cup and the message from participants was that they loved it. They had the ability to get around to see elements of the region they didn’t know existed, and patronised more cafés and restaurants while abiding by the Arrive Play Leave protocol.”

Several adjustments have been made to the event to adhere to COVID Safe protocols.

No under 8s or club development teams have been included. The Arrive Play Leave format will be enforced to ensure the event remains under the 3000-person limit on the venue at any one time. This only allows for one parent or carer per participant at the venue.

Mr Russell said the logistics in pulling this together have been enormous, and welcomed the support of Council to ensure the event planning was

successful.

Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said the city is ready for the third year of this major event.

“We have great pleasure in welcoming all participants to Wagga Wagga for this annual event which is becoming a tradition in our city, and one we very much look forward to hosting,” Cr Conkey said.

“Council staff have worked incredibly well alongside NSW Touch to ensure the carnival proceeds at a fantastic venue in a COVID Safe manner this year.

“It highlights the great relationship we have with NSW Touch and the willingness of all involved to put on this event for the benefit of all the young players involved. I’m very confident this strong relationship will grow and prosper in the years ahead.

“I wish all participants and officials the very best for another successful carnival.”

Cycling in the city: share your ideas Wagga Wagga City Council is asking residents to share their thoughts on all things cycling with the release of a cycling survey.

Strategic Asset Planner (Parks and Recreation) Ben Creighton said results from the anonymous 10 minute survey will help Council gain an understanding of the current use and future demand for cycling infrastructure.

“While the idea of cycling, especially to work, may be a new concept for many of us, with the current construction of the Active Travel paths around the city there is an increased opportunity for more people to use cycling both as a form of transport and on a recreational basis,” Mr Creighton said.

“Council, along with our partners at Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD), and The University of Sydney, has created the Cycling Survey to better understand cycling attitudes and behaviour in Wagga Wagga.

“We’ll use the survey results to ensure we’re working towards meeting community expectations for future infrastructure.”

According to MLHD, only 40 per cent of adults living in Wagga Wagga achieve the desired 30 minutes or more of daily activity.

Bourke Street and Glenfield Road roundabouts, with detours via Bruce Street.

• Bourke Street between Bourkelands Drive and Red Hill Road roundabout will be closed with detours via Berembee Road, Bourkelands Drive and Holbrook Road.

• Road closures will be in place from 6am to 7pm on Friday, and from 6am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. Detours will be signposted.

The Prevention Research Collaboration at The University of Sydney is studying how making changes to environments can impact on communities.

Senior Research Fellow Dr Margaret Thomas has been working with Council and MLHD to develop the survey.

Start a new chapter with city’s Home Library Service Wagga Wagga City Library is encouraging residents who find it difficult to get into the Civic Centre to borrow books to sign up to its Home Library Service.

Manager Library Services Claire Campbell said the volunteerbased service is an initiative of Wagga Wagga City Library and Friends of the Library.

“The Home Library Service brings the library to your door when you’re unable to visit in person,” Ms Campbell said.

“Our Home Library members include older residents who can no longer drive or carry heavy books, as well as people who’ve just come out of hospital and have a temporary access issue while they recover.”

The library is also seeking new Home Library volunteers to help deliver large print books, audio books and DVDs to members of the community.

Deliveries are made monthly by a library volunteer who has

undergone volunteer training and had a police check.

“You will need your own car and be able to carry the books in supplied bags. Volunteers select the books according to the member’s preference,” Ms Campbell said.

“Many wonderful friendships have developed between the members and volunteers in the Home Library Service.”

Wagga Wagga resident Anne Brassil started using the Home Library Service at the end of 2018.

“I’ve always been a voracious reader, but arthritis was making it too difficult to reach books on the bottom shelves,” Mrs Brassil said.

“I signed up for the Home Library Service and Lindy Tribe was the volunteer who first dropped in my books and she’s been delivering them to me ever since.

“I think anybody who likes to read but finds it difficult to get to the library or access the books there,

would benefit from this service.”

Another popular program at the library is Language Café, the English Conversation classes which are held three times per week.

There are currently vacancies for learners on Wednesday mornings at the session that runs from 11.00am–12.30pm.

“If you know someone who would like to improve their English language skills and meet new people, please ask them to contact the library,” Ms Campbell said.

“Currently there is a waiting list to become a Language Café volunteer tutor, but people are also welcome to add their name to this waiting list. The library will be holding an information session for those on the volunteer list after Easter.”

RiFL Hub earthworks show major progress in a month Earthworks on the next stage of the Riverina Intermodal Freight and Logistics (RiFL) Hub at Bomen Industrial Precinct have made significant progress at the site just one month into this construction phase.

There are currently 15 heavy machinery vehicles operating on the 80-hectare site which have shifted 100,000 cubic metres of earth since 22 January.

More plant is expected on site in coming weeks with the aim to move 100,000 cubic

metres each month until June towards a total of 500,000.

Wagga Wagga City Council’s Director Regional Activation Michael Keys said the $54M project will be a “gamechanger” for Wagga and the surrounding region.

“The RiFL Hub terminal will be the core for future growth and expansion in the Bomen Special Activation Precinct, generating up to 6,000 jobs in this region, and has the potential to drive the economic future of the city for decades,” Mr Keys said.

Council has partnered with Visy Logistics and the NSW Government to deliver the 4.9km master rail siding and industrial subdivision.

Visy Logistics will operate and manage the RiFL Hub terminal and master siding under a Public Private Partnership with Council.

Construction of the intermodal facility is expected to be completed by mid-2022.
