Community celebrates Alicia’s golden moment With her Olympic gold medal hanging proudly around her neck, Wagga’s Alicia Quirk was treated to an emotional welcome home on Thursday afternoon.

The Women’s Rugby 7s champion was fresh off the plane from the 2016 Rio Olympics where Australia defeated New Zealand 24-17 in the gold medal game.

About 300 community members cheered her arrival at the Civic Centre, where she was presented with a gift and plaque on behalf of the city.

Wagga’s first Olympic gold medallist was brought to tears by the crowd’s reaction and thanked the community for their unwavering support.

“I’m so, so proud to come from such a beautiful community,” Alicia said.

“It doesn’t even feel real at the moment. It’s such a huge honour to be an Olympian and now to bring home a gold medal for myself and Wagga Wagga is something really special and something I’m really proud of.

“I didn’t believe it when I was told we didn’t have any other gold medallists. The calibre of sporting people we have from Wagga has been phenomenal so I’m really proud that I get to be the first Olympic gold medallist.

“I hope that there’s many more to come and that this medal can inspire other young Wagga kids to chase their dreams and realise it is attainable and you can do anything you put your mind to.”

Following the official

presentation, hundreds of green and gold balloons descended on the huge crowd in the Civic Centre arcade.

Alicia then took the time to meet with community members that turned out to show their support, with some waiting up to an hour-and-a-half to get an autograph and picture with Wagga’s Olympic champion.

“I feel so grateful and lucky that people have reached out to me and thanked me,” Alicia said.

“I’ve got messages from dads saying their young daughters are now wanting to play rugby. My family has received a lot of messages as well and the support the Wagga community has showed them has been really great as well.”

EVOCITIES MTB SERIES TO HIT WAGGA The 2016 Evocities MTB Series has now reached the halfway point with racing set to continue in Wagga Wagga on Sunday, 4 September.

The Wagga Evocities sixhour MTB enduro is an event for solo riders, pairs and teams at Pomingalarna Park, with $6000 in cash and prizes up for grabs in the fourth race of the series.

The full circuit is a 13km figure of eight loop through

natural bushland which will cater for riders of all levels and abilities with plenty to test and satisfy the more seasoned riders.

Unlike most endurance rides where laps completed after the six-hour mark are counted, Wagga’s race has an interesting twist.

For this event, riders must be back in transition before the six hours are up in order for their last lap

to count.

There will also be a 30-minute event for under 12s on a 2km course adjacent to the transition area.

Solar power lights will be installed at Chambers Park in Tolland providing lighting for the playground, basketball court, toilet block and recentlycompleted skatepark.

Meanwhile, the Ashmont Community Hub will receive a new shelter, barbecue, table setting and bike racks.

The Chambers Park works are expected to start in October, with the Ashmont Hub upgrades to follow in November.

The projects were funded through the NSW Government’s Social Housing Community Improvement Fund.

Sun shines, road works back under way in city

Recent sunny weather and predicted dry forecasts have been a welcome sign for City of Wagga Wagga road crews.

Above-average rainfalls during the winter months this year have contributed to an increased number of potholes across the city’s 2300km road network.

However, when the weather has been dry crews have been out patching potholes across the city’s road network.

This week and for the next few weeks there will be a concentrated effort on repairing some of the city’s most impacted roads.

These roads include: Featherwood/Holbrook roads, Bardia Street, The Boulevard, Inglewood Road, Farrer Road, Mates Gully Road, Burrandana Road, Westbrook Road, Tumbarumba Road, Humula Road and Coolamon Road, Henty Road and Central Island Road.

Four grader crews will be on site patching sealed road and two graders for unsealed road repairs.

If you notice a pothole, you can report it to Council by phoning 1300 292 442 or at wagga.nsw. gov.au/onlineservices, or download the iCouncil app and report it straight from your phone.

Meanwhile, subsidence investigation and repair works on Ivan Jack Road were completed and the road opened to motorists on Thursday afternoon.

Emergency underground repair works were also carried out on Farrer Road on Thursday and Friday.

Council, business work together in new-look visitor guide and partner program Wagga’s newest collaborative approaches to tourism were officially launched on Wednesday.

More than 100 Wagga tourism and entertainment operators came together to celebrate the launch of the Wagga Tourism Partner Program and the Wagga Wagga + Surrounds Visitor Guide.

The tourism program and guide offer a combined approach to encouraging and enabling tourism in the region, Manager Economic Development and Visitor Economy Richie Robinson said.

“The Wagga Tourism Partner Program enables more effective promotion of Wagga and the region allowing operators and Council to work together to build a sustainable tourism industry,” Mr Robinson said.

FESTIVAL TO BEAM INTO WAGGA From Sydney to Wagga Wagga, the Festival of Dangerous Ideas is returning to the Museum of the Riverina next month.

Two of the most anticipated sessions from the Sydney Opera House’s flagship Festival of Dangerous Ideas will be live streamed to 16 sites around Australia on Saturday 3 September, connecting audiences with world-leading thinkers.

The emergency-response scenario involved staff installing temporary steel flood barriers at the Kooringal Road end of Copland Street.

The 1.8-metre high, doublestrength steel barriers join together and are covered with plastic sheeting to build a 45-metre long ‘levee’ to keep flood waters out and protect city assets and homes.

Compared to traditional flood-management methods of constructing clay or sandbag barriers, the steel barriers will significantly reduce the emergency-response time during a flood event, and clean-up after an event, and cut overall costs by about 50 per cent.

“To fill the gaps in the levee

during a flood there needs to be dirt moved, sandbags filled, machinery on site and a significant amount of resources, time and money to get the job done,” City of Wagga Wagga Acting General Manager Janice Summerhayes said.

“Now, with these new steel barriers and our trained team, we predict we can have a wall up and be protecting the city in about two hours, which is about a four to six-hour reduction in initial preparation time.”

Use of the barriers also eliminates clean up and removal of dirt from the road once the flood waters recede. The barriers are simply manually taken down and stored for reuse in any subsequent flood events.

The barriers can be installed on any surface, uneven ground and can be interfaced with other surfaces, such as walls or levees.

In total, the barriers are

expected to decrease preparation and clean-up time by about three days and reduce costs by about $60,000 per flood event.

“By carrying out this real-time scenario we are ensuring staff are properly prepared and ready to go in the unfortunate case of a flood event in Wagga,” Mrs Summerhayes said.

The barriers have had proven success during the Queensland floods in 2010/11 and are used in various river/channel cities in the United Kingdom and Europe.

Wagga’s levee system has four gaps.

Barriers have been purchased to fill gaps at Copland Street and the Sturt Highway crossing at Marshalls Creek.

The talent and creativity of artists with disabilities is on show at the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery.

Art to Crow About is the culmination of 12 months of hard work and innovation from the local artists as part of Kurrajong Waratah’s Skills Options lifestyle service.

The exhibition returns to the gallery and is bigger than ever, featuring a range of art mediums, from drawings, printmaking, mixed media, sculpture and garden art.

Each art work is diverse and a celebration of the artists creative ability.

Visitors will experience a wonderful array of artworks which reflects talent and creativity of artists with disability from across the Riverina, including contributions from Wagga and Temora.
