WORKS UNDERWAY: Stage 1 works have so far included tree and top soil removal at the Flowerdale section in preparation for reshaping and reconstruction of the levee.

First stage of levee upgrade continues Preliminary works to raise and strengthen Wagga Wagga’s Main City Levee are well underway. Stage 1 of the upgrade works to increase the Main City Levee to a 1 in 100 year level of protection started in October at Flowerdale Lagoon. Works so far have included tree and top soil removal at the Flowerdale section and a total of 48,000 tonnes of clay has been stockpiled on site in preparation for reshaping and reconstruction of the levee and construction of a new concrete spillway.

“Residents would have seen some truck and machinery movements along the levee in the past two months,” Senior Project Manager Darryl Woods said. “This work will continue in the lead up to Christmas and in the new year sections of one of the new concrete spillways will start to take shape. “Residents are also reminded to be mindful of extra truck movements in and around the site at Moorong Street and the Olympic Highway while the works are being carried out. “The Wiradjuri Walking Track at Flowerdale is also closed until the new year.” Some works will also start next week

at the Kooringal Road/Copland Street end of the levee, which will also include increased truck movements in the area. Stage 1 of the Main City Levee upgrade is being delivered in two stages, from Flowerdale to Wiradjuri Bridge and from Copland Street working south to the Kooringal Road Monumental Cemetery. Both sections consist of embankment levee earthen works and the construction of two concrete spillways, one at Flowerdale and the other upstream from Copland Street. Stage 1 is expected to be complete by April 2018. Keep updated on the levee works at www.wagga.nsw.gov.au/levee.

Ever wanted to see what 13,800 twinkling fairy lights looks like? Then be sure to head down to the Victory Memorial Garden on Thursday 30 November from 8pm for the official switching on of a new light installation just in time for Christmas. Flicking the switch will also officially usher in the festive season across the city, which includes Christmas-themed flags, footpath decals and projections on the Civic Centre, along with other events such as carols, a lit-up Christmas village and New Year’s Eve fireworks. “While we are switching on these new lights as part of our community’s Christmas celebrations, they will be used year-round to add something special to the cityscape along with contributing to the overall sense of safety for park users,” Wagga Wagga City Council’s Director Community Janice Summerhayes said. “This project is a gift that will keep on giving to the community long after the festive season. “The lights feature 13,800 LED goldencoloured globes, winding 610 meters around the tree and stretching 20 metres high.” The lights, flags and decals replace the city’s older decorations, which were decommissioned due to wear and tear. The lights will also create a sense of nostalgia for some Wagga Wagga residents who may recall lights adorning the tallest cypress pine in the Victory Memorial Gardens in the past. “The tree lights add a new look and feel to the Civic Precinct, providing a central place for the community to come together during the festive season and at other events throughout the year,” Ms Summerhayes said. “Reinstating the much-loved lights in the pine tree in the Victory Memorial Gardens is the first stage of this lighting project, with the opportunity to light more trees in the area depending on budget available in the future” The lights have been fitted with bird deterrent devices and are heavy duty to withstand weather conditions. The cost of the project was $20,000.
