Accolade for builders of Wagga’s multi-purpose stadium One of Wagga’s newest buildings, the $9.2M multi-purpose stadium, was recognised at the Master Builder Association of NSW Regional Awards held in Wagga last week.

Project builders Zauner Constructions, took out the 2019 Best Commercial Building ($6M to $10M) Award, which recognises the Riverina region’s local craftsmanship, expertise and excellence.

Operations Director Caroline Angel said the Award is reflective of the efforts Zauner put into the build and the overall project’s success.

“The community is certainly benefiting from the high-quality result and Council is pleased to see recognition of Zauner’s professionalism from the Masters Builders Association,” she said.

The multi-purpose stadium officially opened in February 2019 and is used extensively by the community for netball, volleyball, basketball and futsal.

Recruitment for specialist staff to help deliver an additional $30M-plus in projects for Wagga Wagga is underway, with early signs showing plenty of interest in the roles.

Wagga Wagga City Council has started its recruitment campaign for 17 new positions including engineers, project managers, construction supervisors, business analysts and procurement staff.

Nine of the positions have the option of being located in Sydney and working remotely for Wagga Wagga City Council in a shared office space with the NSW Government Special Activation Precinct team and State Development Corporation.

"The goal is to attract the best staff we can, and then demonstrate why living in Wagga Wagga is brilliant,” Council’s General Manager Peter Thompson said.

“It’s a proven path with both medical professionals and former defence staff falling love with our region once they start working here.

“We haven’t been able to get these staff to locate to Wagga Wagga in the past, despite advertising and working with recruitment agencies. This is a new option. We are trying something new.

“The recruitment is underway and I’m pleased to say the idea has generated 300 applications already.

“The end goal is to get these vitally important projects off the ground, and to provide another entry point for people to experience the regional city lifestyle with the option to relocate here.”

While there has been some success, the pool of applications has been limited, and in some cases, Council has been to the market on three occasions for key positions and not found suitable candidates with the required level of technical skill and expertise.

Thousands of kids inspired by science festival Thousands of little and not-solittle scientists enjoyed the fun of the Riverina Science Festival, which culminated in the jampacked Future World event on 17 August.

Presented by Wagga Wagga City Library in its capacity as coordinator of the Riverina Science Hub, more than 4000 people of all ages descended on the Civic Centre for Future World and hundreds more attend activities in the lead up.

Future World had nine separate activity areas throughout the Civic Centre precinct with something for all ages and everything from parasites to virtual reality, coding, music and more.

The National Indigenous Science Education Program (NISEP) at Tolland Community Centre was one of the week’s highlights, with 120 primary school students attending sessions presented by CSU, Macquarie University and student leaders from Mount Austin and Kooringal high schools.

The Riverina Science Festival is supported by Wagga Wagga City Council and the Federal Government’s Inspiring Australia program.

The Future World event was made possible by staff from Council’s library, art gallery, museum and environment teams along with presenters from CSU, The Riverina Anglican College and EduKits.

THE HALL COMMIT TEE IS ALMOST R E A DY TO H I T T H E ROA D The Civic Theatre is hitting the road for a whirlwind tour of the region for its new original production The Hall Committee.

Written by actor and comedian Damian Callinan, whose film The Merger was made in Wagga Wagga, The Hall Committee is an interactive new play based on stories and interviews from local people in various community halls.

This September, the production will transform halls in North Wagga, Oura, Ganmain, Uranquinty, Ladysmith, Downside and Cootamundra into the fictional village of “Rummage South”.

Civic Theatre Manager Carissa Campbell said there has been plenty of interest in The Hall Committee, which will feature both local and interstate actors.

“We’re actively looking at ways we can help foster more local content by working with the local professional theatre industry to develop new works and provide performance opportunities for young and emerging artists,” Ms Campbell said.

“By hosting the play in community halls, we’re also encouraging the audience to get out and see parts of the region they might not have visited before.

dropped straight into the script,” he said.

“The audiences will have their own hall transformed in front of them as the cast usurp their residing committee to bring this interactive, immersive, hilarious play to life.”

Suitably endorsed Tenders marked “RFT 2020-07 WWCC Solar Project” are invited and will be received by the undersigned until 2pm Wednesday 18 September 2019. This is a lump sum contract for the design and construction of Solar Photovoltaic Systems on a number of Council owned and run sites. A compulsory pre-tender site meeting will be held Thursday 5 September 2019 at 10am. Registration to attend the site meeting can be directed to Melinda Conolly, conolly.melinda@ wagga.nsw.gov.au.
