The Canberra Raiders have begun the countdown to their round nine match against the Dolphins at McDonalds Park in Wagga Wagga, with Elijah Anderson and Nick Cotric visiting the city this week to help promote the upcoming fixture.

The Raiders take on the NRL’s newest franchise the Dolphins on Saturday 29 April, with a rivalry already building between the two teams following their clash in Redcliffe earlier this season.

Ticket sales for the match have already reached 2000, with the Raiders encouraging everyone to pre-purchase their tickets now to ensure they secure a place at the game.

The Green Machine will roll into town on Thursday prior to the match, with a fan meet and greet to take place in the city from 5pm on 27 April. Further details of the event will be released in the coming weeks. Fans are encouraged to come along, meet the team and secure some Raiders merchandise or a 2023 Raiders membership.

During his visit to the city on Thursday, Nick Cotric said the opportunity to head

out to Wagga Wagga again was exciting for the team and they looked forward to returning to McDonalds Park in a few weeks’ time.

“We love getting out to the regional areas and supporting rugby league, and the matches in Wagga Wagga have always been ones we’ve looked forward to as a playing group,” Cotric said. “It’s also great news that we’re able to spend some time meeting fans, signing autographs and posing for photos on Thursday afternoon ahead of Saturday’s game.”

Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Dallas Tout encourages residents of Wagga Wagga and the surrounding region to take advantage of the opportunity to see the NRL stars during their visit to the city.

“This will be the fourth time in the past five years the Raiders have played a home game here, reflecting the strong partnership forged between the club and the city,” Cr Tout said.

“Whether you’re a die-hard Green Machine fan, a Dolphins supporter or just love the game of Rugby League, we would love to see you come along to McDonalds Park on 29 April and show

your support for having these big sporting events in our city.”

Emma Corbett and Destination & Events

Coordinator Kim Parker are encouraging event organisers to apply now for the 2023/24 Major Events, Festivals and Films Sponsorship funding.

Funding opportunities for major events now open

Wagga Wagga City Council is now accepting applications for its 2023/24 Major Events, Festivals and Film Sponsorship funding program.

This funding supports organisers to deliver major events in the city to ensure a vibrant events calendar is developed for our community and visitors to enjoy year-round.

Council Events Officer Emma Corbett said funding amounts between $3000 and $20,000 are available for events held between 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024 under the program.

“We are excited to support innovative and creative events that deliver strong social benefits and economic returns for the city,” Ms Corbett said.

“This funding recognises the importance of events and festivals in driving visitation to our Wagga Wagga + Surrounds region, as well as showcasing our public spaces and enlivening our city.”

This funding has supported many successful projects, with past recipients including Wagga Wagga Mardi Gras, Gears & Beers, Motor Mania, and locally produced film The Merger

There are three categories of funding available including incubator events, developing events and flagship events catering for the different growth and development stages an event progresses through.

Applications will remain open until June 2024 or until allocated funds are exhausted.

There are four assessment rounds throughout the financial year, with the first-round closing on 14 May 2023.

Celebrate You(th) this April

Youth Week is returning to Wagga Wagga from 20 – 30 April, boasting a packed program of inclusive and accessible activities for local young people aged 12 to 25 years.

Wagga Wagga City Council is partnering with organisations from near and far to deliver a program featuring inclusive and accessible activities to upskill local youth, and to showcase their talent and have fun which sits in line with the 2023 NSW Youth Week theme: Connect. Participate. Celebrate.

Council’s Youth Development Officer Alex Osgood developed the program in consultation with local young people during an extensive engagement project in 2022.

"We spoke to over 350 young people from 12 to 25 years old and we heard that they wanted more opportunities to learn about all those things that aren't in the school curriculum, plus safe spaces for youth to gather and perform."

The Youth Week 2023 program offers a diverse range of free and low-cost activities giving local youth a chance to learn a new skill, meet new people or just chill out!

“From activities like an old-school busking competition, street art workshops, making mugs from mud or learning to change a tyre, there is a piece of this packed program for everyone to enjoy,” Alex said.

Council and its community partners are committed to hosting inclusive and accessible events for everyone. Check out the full program and learn more about age recommendations for activities and accessibility, online at wagga.nsw.gov.au/youth-week

If you need this information in another format or have any questions, please contact the Youth Development Officer on 1300 292 442 or email youth@ wagga.nsw.gov.au.
