Riverside’s Commitment to Our Community Riverside Health System, as a not-for-profit organization, is firmly committed to providing health care services to everyone in our communities. A Message from the Board Chairman Since March of 2020, the exceptional teams across Riverside Health System have tirelessly served our communities as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to weather on. Their dedication to providing the absolute best care and services to the communities we serve is nothing less than inspiring. Yet the outpouring of love and support from the community, from the people who continue to go above and beyond in celebrating the health care heroes saving lives each day, is equally as inspiring. It is this relationship of support between the teams at Riverside Health System and the communities we serve that culminates in one thing: remarkable care.

Over the past year, gifts to the Riverside Foundation have broken records and paved the way for Riverside to continue to elevate the standard of care. Gifts in gratitude, in memory, and in hope for the future of health care make it possible for Riverside to remove more barriers to receiving the exceptional care we are proud to provide to our communities. From providing transportation to ensuring the latest technologies are available for treatments, gifts to the Foundation play a pivotal role in providing remarkable care.

These generous gifts, combined with unwavering solidarity from our communities, ensure that Riverside is able to

continually meet the needs of each patient and close the gap between what insurance will cover and what our mission demands and our patients deserve.

As we look ahead at what’s to come in 2022, there are big things happening at the Riverside Foundation, several of which you will read about in the pages here. One of these is the transition of leadership on the Foundation Board of Directors. After serving for six years as the Chairman, it is time for me to relinquish this leadership position and to serve in new ways.

Though my role at the Foundation will look different in the future, I will forever be a proud champion of the Foundation and remain immensely grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of this outstanding team.

As we march forward into a new year with its own unique challenges, we know we are still in this together every step of the way. We are grateful for your continued support. Together we are stronger than ever.

A Note from the Chief Philanthropy Officer Welcome to the latest edition of Remarkable, the Riverside Foundation’s annual report to our community.

In these pages, you will find stories from the past year at the Riverside Foundation. Stories of patients who expressed their gratitude for remarkable care by making a generous gift in support of the treatments and teams who healed them. Stories of treasured community members who have passed and left a life-changing gift to the health care system that supported them throughout their life. Stories of families who are together today because of health care heroes across Riverside Health System.

Stories, we know, are powerful. They bring us together as a community. They celebrate the joys in our lives, and they provide comfort in moments of pain. They honor the past and help us dream of the future we will build together. Riverside’s story is and always will be centered around our mission: to care for others as we would care for those we love.

The Riverside Foundation’s story is comprised of so many

voices coming together in service of our community and the mission that guides us. One of these voices, a voice I often describe as the Foundation’s biggest cheerleader, is the incomparable Mr. Conway Sheild. After serving as the Foundation Board Chairman for six years, Mr. Sheild is stepping down from his current position but has agreed to transition to a different leadership role at the Foundation. We are forever changed by his support and are grateful he will continue on with us as we meet the future together.

Resilience Inspired by Our Communities Riverside team members continually strive to provide additional and superior services for the communities they serve. Each year they come together to philanthropically support Riverside in carrying out its mission. Riverside’s dedicated team rose to the occasion in 2021, investing more than $170,000 toward priority projects that help us to fulfill our mission. Their support is an echo of and thanks for the support the community has so generously provided to Riverside.

Team Members Support Their Colleagues Riverside’s commitment to support health care extends beyond patient care to its own team members. Our team has delivered inspiring care in a time like no other, but sometimes they need support too. The Help Fund is the way we accomplish that.

Since its inception in 2009, the fund has provided assistance to more than 2,100 team members to recover after catastrophic events such as a house fire, flood or death of an immediate family member; to cover emergency shelter needs; to avoid eviction through assistance with rent or mortgage; and to provide basic living requirements in times of severe financial distress.

Team members and members of the community may donate to the fund so that, when team members experience an unexpected hardship, they can tap into the support of the Help Fund to get past the obstacle and return to life as normal.

Extraordinary Leadership for Remarkable Results In 2019 the Riverside Foundation celebrated twenty of the most remarkable people and entities who, over twenty years, were instrumental in molding the Foundation into an effective and patientcentered gift destination.

Each year we have recognized an additional provider and citizen of the year. These powerhouse supporters encourage principles and causes that support Riverside and its Foundation to ensure the best in treatment and comfort for our patients.

2021 Distinguished Providers of the Year For more than half a century, Peninsula Pathology Associates (PPA) has provided services throughout Eastern Virginia from their state-ofthe-art, hospital-based lab at Riverside Regional Medical Center. Our 2021 Distinguished Providers - Dr. Lucy DeFanti, Dr. Theresa Emory, Dr. Michael Schwartz, Katie Simpson, PA, Rodney Slyter, PA, Dr. David Smith and Dr. Damian Tagliente - embody the philosophy of patientcentered remarkable care at Riverside.

PPA believes in giving back and recognizes that philanthropy plays a vital role in enhancing patient care and providing health programs in our communities. Pathologists are the clinicians that the patient’s care team consults to help diagnose diseases, develop medical treatment solutions or determine the state of a patient’s health using the latest diagnostic tools available. Patients may have no contact with a pathologist, but they are an integral component of any health care team. As leaders in their field, PPA is widely known for having the highest standards of excellence, reliability, leading-edge technology and a staff with a scope and depth of experience second to none.

PPA works intimately with Riverside’s pathology professionals to ensure that patients get timely and accurate diagnoses. In 2021, PPA diagnosed more than 28,000 surgical patient cases throughout Riverside, touching every community in Riverside’s service area.

In addition, PPA partners with professionals in all of Riverside’s laboratories to design protocols, establish parameters for performance of clinical testing, select and evaluate testing methodologies, advise on inconclusive results, and direct and evaluate quality assurance and control procedures.

Supporting the 80% of medical decisions that start in the laboratory is of vital importance to PPA and to the patients who benefit from PPA’s vast experience and expertise.

“We are honored and humbled and excited to be included in such a special event,” said Dr. Emory about being part of the PPA team recognized as this year’s Distinguished Providers. With her characteristic humility she pointed the spotlight at Riverside, saying, “we are grateful for the excellent laboratory professionals and technical staff who work tirelessly throughout the health system to ensure that the laboratories operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and ensure that Riverside provides the highest quality laboratory services.”

Faye Petro Gargiulo and Dr. J. Frank Sanderson, Jr. 2021 Distinguished Citizens of the Year Faye Petro Gargiulo and J. Frank Sanderson, Jr., M.D. are strong advocates for Riverside, for health care advancements and for those who provide and enable that care. Their passion for medical education and their commitment to supporting health initiatives through their generous philanthropy was inspired in part by, and now supports, Riverside Health System’s commitment to exceptional care and caregivers. Faye compared Riverside’s mission - to care for others as we would care for those we love – to a “personal mantra.”

Before her retirement in 2018, Faye was part of the Riverside leadership team for more than 30 years and played a rewarding role in expanding Riverside’s extraordinary care to as many patients as possible. She touched many areas of Riverside: as the first service line administrator for oncology, by developing wellness initiatives, by recruiting and retaining talented physicians, by leading the marketing team, by leading the clinical research team and by guiding the Riverside Foundation team during its early years of growth.

In addition Faye made the decision to support the Riverside Foundation through her estate plan. Her consideration of the future needs of Riverside’s communities is an inspiration for others who want to leave a legacy to benefit future patients.

Dr. Sanderson embodies the concept of lifelong learner and patient advocate. After his first 35 years of active, trend-setting clinical practice Dr. Sanderson “retired the first time” to undertake an additional threeyear fellowship at The University of Virginia. Upon completion he

became the Peninsula’s first neurointerventional radiologist, providing local patients with rapidly evolving approaches to stroke and neurologic care. With his additional training and his return to Riverside in 2008, Dr. Sanderson became the clinical lead of the team that built the Riverside Health System Neurointervention Program and established the first accredited comprehensive stroke center in Eastern Virginia. Dr. Sanderson retired from practicing medicine in 2020.

In honor of Faye’s years of service at Riverside and their life together, Dr. Sanderson founded the Petro & Sanderson Educational Scholarship in 2018 to benefit selected students at the Riverside College of Health Careers. “As a young person I grew up in very limited circumstances, and so I can identify with people who struggle to make ends meet, and I think our scholarship is oriented toward helping people in that category,” said Dr. Sanderson.

Dr. Sanderson described learning that they would be recognized as this year’s Distinguished Citizens, saying “I was shocked to say the least. It was something I never expected to receive in terms of recognition at that level, but I certainly appreciate it and hope that our story may inspire other people to do something similar.” Faye echoed his sentiment and described her father’s concept called “the strength of humility” which makes her keenly aware of the support the couple has received from the people around them and that they “owed it to other people” to pay it forward.

Faye and Dr. Sanderson continue to champion and support numerous programs within Riverside including initiatives in the neurosciences, oncology and education fields. Both enthusiastically continue to celebrate and support an optimistic future for health care by mentoring new generations of community providers and the team members who enable their work.

Celebrating Our Heroes At our 20th Anniversary celebration in 2019 we recognized the twenty people and organizations that molded the Foundation into a remarkable gift destination over its first 20 years in existence. We then suspended in-person celebrations during the pandemic but were thrilled this year to enjoy, with pandemic precautions, the company of the people we respect so much at our inaugural RemarkaBall gala event.

Donors Who Inspire Us Healing can take many forms – healing of the body is of primary importance and is aided by clinical team members, but healing of mind and soul is just as critical. For those patients for whom expressing gratitude is part of their healing process, the Riverside Foundation is proud to help.

Gratitude is generated not only by effective healing of the body but also by the connections between care team and patient. The Riverside Care Difference is our way of describing how we put our mission – to care for others as we would care for those we love – into action. In a patient-centered corporate culture, the emphasis on making patients feel comfortable, included and cared for is just as important as effective clinical treatment. Grateful patients who are motivated to give back to their care team give us hugs, lovely notes of gratitude and sometimes even cookies and flowers. We appreciate these genuine expressions of gratitude. On occasion, these expressions of gratitude include a donation to allow us to continue to do our life-saving work.

DiNardo Foundation Three generous donations from the Ignatius DiNardo Foundation are helping patients in need on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

The foundation was created after the early and unexpected 2019 death of internist Ignatius DiNardo, M.D. who had served his community Greg, Lilly, “Iggy,” Madeline and Joanie DiNardo and his patients for decades with generosity and dedication. Dr. DiNardo’s family created the foundation to honor his memory through helping others.

Dr. DiNardo chose to start his career serving the Maryland Eastern Shore, and he never left. “Dad fell in love with the Shore,” said Gregory DiNardo, Dr. DiNardo’s son. “That’s why we wanted to continue to make an impact here and to focus on providing assistance to patients on the Shore.” As the family mourned, the doctor’s colleagues and former patients came with fond memories of Dr. DiNardo’s generosity. “We heard countless stories, including stories of him reaching into his pocket to give

“[The transportation assistance] really makes a difference with my situation, because I don’t have the money to go over [to Newport News] and I had to cancel my appointments because I couldn’t find someone to drive me. Thank the Lord for the help.”

This legacy was what they wanted to remember and preserve.

At Riverside, DiNardo Foundation funding is helping patients who have experienced cardiac- or COVID-related health problems or are hospice or cancer patients. This funding has had a significant impact on the Shore’s most vulnerable patients and has allowed them to focus all of their attention on healing.

Julie Kilburn, LaShay’s oncology social worker. Jamison’s family – including mother Corrine Jamison, siblings and close friends hosted a joyous celebration in LaShay’s memory to raise money for Riverside’s Tree of Life Cancer Care Fund. Proceeds will ‘pay it forward’ to support other patients and families facing their own cancer journeys and are donated in honor of Doctors William Irvin and Mashour Yousef from whom LaShay received such compassionate care.

In 2021 the funding provided transportation assistance for patients undergoing cancer treatment, grocery assistance for patients whose budget was squeezed by treatment expenses, and treatment-related expenses for the comfort of hospice patients, among other forms of assistance.

LaShay’s extended support group plans to make her memorial fundraising event an annual celebration of a life well-lived. It is an honor for the Riverside Foundation to receive this generous funding and to make sure that LaShay’s beautiful memory continues to benefit future patients.

Caramine Kellam

Described by many as the life of the party, LaShay Jamison was a bright light for all who knew her. Sadly, in the summer of 2020, LaShay lost her courageous battle with cancer.

With a vivacious personality and a signature sense of humor, Caramine Kellam lent her leadership and influence to many Eastern Shore organizations, but none more so than the local hospital and the Auxiliary that supported it. Caramine served with distinction as a hospital Board member for 27 years, including two

terms as chairman. Her leadership was instrumental in securing Riverside’s investment in Eastern Shore health care, in bringing a brand new, technologically advanced health care campus in Onancock to fruition, and in adamantly championing health care philanthropy on the Shore. Caramine also served for six years on the Riverside Foundation Board of Directors.

Over her adult life, Caramine made multiple gifts, some large, some small, but all thoughtful and inspiring. She was a tireless advocate for improving and expanding the medical services offered on the Shore, and she set an example for other donors by supporting projects that would make a difference in a rural community.

Caramine was recognized for her tireless dedication at the Foundation’s 20th anniversary celebration in 2019. Sadly, Caramine recently passed away, but - thoughtful and generous to the last - she requested that tribute gifts support the Shore hospital.

Event Supports Cancer Patients in Williamsburg For the 27th year, family and community members celebrated the legacy of John Randolph and Dr. Mark E. Ellis – two men who led the fight against cancer in Williamsburg. “They had empathy for people with cancer because they were both cancer survivors, and they were two of the bravest people I have ever known,” said event organizer and cancer survivor Patti Dwyer.

Held as a virtual event in February 2021, the dinner was catered and

delivered to viewers and an inspiring Facebook broadcast featured Bobby and Patti Dwyer, chef Tony Rizzo, oncologist Dr. John Miller, patient Dave Biondi, John Randolph, Jr. and Mark Ellis, Jr. and team members from the Peninsula Cancer Institute.

The event raised more support than ever for local access to cancer care and for financial assistance for patients who are burdened by the additional costs they incur during treatment.

John Randolph, Jr. remarked to the Event organizers Patti and Bobby Dwyer with viewers, “we have a really winning insulated bags in which dinner was delivered to combination of three elements: first at-home attendees. we have great people in Bobby and Patti Dwyer who have been doing this for a couple of decades now and its just unbelievable what they do every year. Secondly you’ve got some of the best food in all of Virginia if not all of the eastern seaboard. And finally it’s a terrific cause; the Riverside Foundation is an excellent cause to support, and I am happy to do it, and I thank you for your support as well.”

Enhancing the NICU

Ben Booth’s first birthday

Jacob Linn’s story

Toddler Ben Booth had just turned one year old when his parents presented the Riverside Foundation with a gift in honor of his birth. Ben spent time in Riverside Regional Medical Center’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit just Ben Booth at after his birth, and it one year old. was a scary time for his family and friends. One reassuring aspect of his stay was that his family could see him when they weren’t in the hospital through a NicView camera.

In November of 2021, the Linn family celebrated National Prematurity Awareness Month and their precious son’s first birthday with a generous gift to the Riverside Regional Medical Center’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. A year earlier their son was born premature at 25 weeks and 3 days, weighing 1 pound 12 ounces and measuring 12 inches long. Jacob’s parents, Jennifer and Steven, were understandably worried and hated having to go home from the hospital without Jacob.

Parents and other loved ones can log in to a secure camera feed to connect with their newest family member when they are not able to be at the bedside. The cameras help to reduce parents’ anxiety between visits which is particularly helpful when the hospital stay is longer than anticipated. Experience also shows that parent-infant bonding and familycentered care is improved with the camera.

With cribside two-way NicView Michele Benson accepts donation cameras, the Linns were able to check from Jacob Linn’s family. in to see Jacob and to communicate with his care team. They knew he was exactly where he needed to be and was receiving the care he required to thrive. Knowing that Jacob’s team was treating him as if he were one of their own children made it a bit easier to leave him each day.

“The NicView cameras were amazing because with COVID he couldn’t have any other family members visit, so his older brother, for 3 months, only got to see him on camera; same for grandma and grandad. The cameras were truly a blessing,” said Steven.

“They saved his life, and because of them we have a happy, healthy, thriving boy who is now celebrating his first birthday. We will be forever grateful to the Riverside NICU team and are truly honored to be a Riverside NICU graduate family,” said Jennifer.

Mr. Len Bennett and obstetrician Dr. Drina Northam had firsthand experience with being separated from their newborn when their son, Paul, was born premature and needed some extra time in the NICU before going home. “I wanted to be with him, watch him, touch him, but knew the NICU doctors and staff were doing a great job,” said Dr. Northam. When informed of the Foundation’s interest in purchasing cribside cameras, the couple immediately recognized the benefits for babies and families.

To further facilitate cameras at each cribside, Mr. Bennett and Dr. Northam matched funds that were donated to this project on Riverside’s Day of Giving social media fundraising event in December. For more detail on the many successes of our Day of Giving, see our story on page 29.

A Passion for Helping Others The Martha W. Goodson Memory Care Center The need for memory care in America is becoming more and more obvious. As our population ages and as we improve in recognizing the symptoms of impaired cognition, we are poised at a juncture to better treat those in our community who need memory care.

Riverside Health System and the Riverside Foundation are honored to share that Newport News native G. Royden Goodson III, a community leader and Riverside Health System board member, has made a seven-figure leadership gift to establish the Martha W. Goodson Memory Care Center. This gift, the largest gift from an individual that Riverside has ever received, honors Royden’s wife and their journey as a couple through her Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

Martha Goodson was diagnosed in her fifties with early onset Alzheimer’s disease. The Goodsons needed to quickly learn

The Purple Flower Program trains staff in Riverside acute care facilities to better support people living with dementia who come under their care. Additionally, this program is being expanded to include first responders, who are frequently called into situations with families living with dementia.

Finally, the Essential Caregiver Program at Warwick Forest and Patriot’s Colony allows qualified family members to enter the facility to help care for their loved ones during restrictive times such as COVID or lockdowns.

Royden described, “It took a while for both of us to digest that news.

Even now I do not fully understand, but after a year or so, I accepted the fact that we could not reverse Martha’s illness. There was no breakthrough clinical trial to discover. The solutions that people posted on Facebook were not going to heal everyone. There was no need to go to some large research medical center because they knew things we did not know here. I finally concluded that, as Martha’s husband, my focus was to be her care partner, and I wanted to be the best partner I could be.”

He continued, “One of the best resources I found was Riverside Health System. I met and worked with professionals at Riverside who helped me understand how to better educate myself, how to anticipate what might come as the disease progressed, and what I could do to support Martha. There were plenty of surprises, but now we had a team with us as we moved down the road of living with dementia.”

Royden went on to say, “I was so impressed with Riverside. In early

God has also placed me where I can help provide others in our community with more of the same education, support and tools that I continue to use. My passion is supporting people living with dementia, but Riverside’s vision is larger than that.

I am grateful for the support that Martha and I have had. I cannot think of a better way to honor my wife than by providing this gift, and I hope it will inspire you to join in the journey with us.”

The Purple Flower Project at Riverside Doctors Hospital Williamsburg is building awareness among Riverside team members of patients living with memory loss and cognitive change.

Team members have received training to more effectively support people living with dementia who come under their care. Affected inpatients are designated by a purple flower on their in-room communication white board.

Initially funded with donations from Riverside’s 2020 Day of Giving, the project is being piloted in Williamsburg with plans to roll out to Riverside’s other communities. Additionally, Riverside has received funding to offer training to first responders who are frequently called into situations with families living with dementia.

Spain Family's Investment Already Helping Families In last year’s Remarkable report, Riverside announced the creation of a Memory Care Navigator position funded by a wonderful gift from Steve and Grace Spain and their family. The gift was sparked by their journey coordinating care for Steve’s father, George T. Spain, who had dementia.

In the months since navigator Amanda Gada began working, her expertise is already helping families find the resources and support they need to address their loved one’s needs. As the program ramps up, Amanda is partnering with local agencies that can provide support services, becoming trained and certified in relevant leading-edge knowledge, and creating an infrastructure that will help coordinate needs in the future.

Through the Benjamin Rose Institute, which provides evidence-based care consultation, Amanda establishes a relationship directly with caregiving families. Her goal is to reduce the overwhelming nature of their challenges as they navigate the constant transitions that are the hallmarks of a dementia journey.

This service is made possible at no charge because of the generous gift from the Spains. “The navigator position is such a positive thing,” said Steve. “I’m just hoping that this will help families and their loved ones along their journey.”

Education Changes the Future Riverside’s focus on education develops expertise in our team and has a profound impact on future health care in our communities. Through scholarships that help team members expand their horizons and through providing a learning environment for our team and community partners, Riverside ensures that our patients are the ultimate beneficiaries of this culture of learning.

The Harding Family Nursing Endowed Scholarship Retired physician Dr. Robert Harding and his wife, Nancy, who is an also-retired early childhood educator, wanted to express their gratitude to the health care community that supported them over decades.

They partnered with the Riverside Foundation and the Riverside College of Health Careers (RCHC) to establish an endowed scholarship for licensed practical nurse (LPN) training.

Named The Harding Family Nursing Endowed Scholarship Fund, the Nancy and Dr. Robert Harding first scholarships will be presented in the summer of 2022 and will continue for years to come. “We have been inspired by the skill, energy and

compassion of so many senior nurses and nurse practitioners over the years. Many of these professionals began their careers as nurse’s aides right out of high school. They then gradually acquired the education necessary to progress from certified nurses assistants to LPNs to registered nurses and beyond. This process takes years and sometimes decades. In the meantime, they work, start families, study and take on financial obligations to make it happen. And amidst those challenges they sustain that healing touch which is so crucial to great medicine. Establishing nursing scholarships to help those early in the journey felt like a good way to honor and support both them and the community they will serve,” said the Hardings.

In 2021, 308 RCHC students received $369,800 in scholarships to act on their passion and expand their knowledge.

Always Learning The Riverside Simulation Training Lab in Memory of Dr. Brandon D. Rogers within the Huntington Ingalls Industries Education and Training Center emulates a clinical environment so that team members can maintain and expand their clinical proficiency in a low-risk setting and ultimately improve the care we provide to our patients.

In 2021 the Lab hosted more than 1,600 learners spanning more than thirty programs, and facilitated 164 training sessions in more than 450 hours of simulation-based training.

In addition the Lab was granted Provisional Accreditation by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. This recognition validates that the Lab is following the highest standards and practices and has met the initial criteria for full approval.

Provisional Accreditation is valid for two years, at which time the Sim Lab Leadership plans to pursue Full Accreditation.

Achieving this milestone so quickly is a significant accomplishment for the Sim Lab team and Riverside.

The family of the late Dr. Rogers for whom the Lab is named continues to support the Lab in many ways including fundraising, engagement and celebrating milestones with Lab team members. With their support and that of other donors and champions, the capabilities and curricula in the Lab continue to expand.

Through his gift, the Shore’s patients will benefit from technology and service expansions so that community members do not need to travel for care.

Eastern Shore resident Durando “Dee” Miller III left a legacy for health care on the Eastern Shore by naming the Riverside Shore Cancer Center as a beneficiary of his estate. His generous gift will impact local patients well into the coming decades. Dee’s gift is in honor of his late wife, Catherine Mapp Miller, who inspired him with her view that “what we have is God’s gift to us.

What we do with that is our gift to God.”

In recognition of his generosity and of the care provided at the Cancer Center, the Medical Oncology Suite has been named in honor of the Millers.

Dee courageously fought his battle with cancer with the assistance of his care team at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital, which he likened to a five-star hotel, and the Riverside Shore Cancer Center. Dee named Riverside in his estate planning out of gratitude toward his care team who made him feel loved and cared for, and where everyone knew his name and went above and beyond to make him comfortable at all times.

As part of the purchase agreement for the home and surrounding land, new owners Christopher and Krystine Hadley made a substantial donation to Riverside’s hospice and cancer services to honor Joyce’s deep involvement in the community, bringing further depth to her legacy.

Mrs. Joyce Brown Milliner held a decades-long interest in local health care. Joyce gave generously of her time and talent to what is now the Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, serving as its President several decades ago.

The home purchase and donation “will honor the legacy that Joyce had hoped for and fulfill her wishes to benefit the Shore,” said Krystine. “We are happy to have the opportunity to honor her last wishes.” The Hadleys’ gift is an investment in local health care and the beginning of what they hope will be a long relationship with the community that will become their permanent home in the future.

Her leadership role was one manifestation of her vision of world class services even in a rural community. She also volunteered at Shore LifeCare at Parksley, the nursing home owned by Shore Health Services and later Riverside Health System.

The Collinses’ hope is to inspire other people to consider a similar gift in their estate plan. “Get four or five people making similar gifts, and you could build space to treat even more people,” Frank said.

Frank and Selena Collins from Gloucester Point have made plans to include Riverside’s Peninsula Cancer Institute and Infusion Center in Gloucester as a beneficiary in their trust. The move was inspired by the care Frank recently received as he battles late-stage cancer and to honor his care team, including oncologists Dr. Ko Ko Maung and Dr. Lori Gillespie.

Edna Watts Edna Watts, a retired Nurse Practitioner, is a proud alumna of the Riverside School of Professional Nursing.

After attending a class reunion in 2018, she was moved to support the school that helped propel her long and successful career. It was an easy decision for her to give back in such a meaningful way as funds from a scholarship were fundamental to her completion of the nursing program and she remains immensely grateful.

During a conversation in which the couple reflected on lives well lived that included traveling the world and an appreciation for the arts, Frank appreciated that Riverside “has done a pretty good job for us under these trying circumstances; they are making a big effort, and we appreciate it.” Frank said, “we wanted to do something nice for the people who are helping us,” and gave credit to his wife for the idea, saying “Selena has always been civic-minded in that way.”

In addition to continued annual support, Edna has established through her estate plan a scholarship at the Riverside College of Health Careers to make the same opportunities she had attainable for future generations.

nursing specialization in their home community. They have named Riverside Walter Reed Hospital as the newest beneficiary of their Charitable Remainder Trust, believing in the care that their local hospital provides and wanting to ensure it has the resources it needs to continue to grow and excel.

Susan McCreary’s parents, George and Estelle Abernathy, were Newport News civic leaders for more than half a century, and Mr. Abernathy was one of the original Board members for the hospital that is now Riverside Regional Medical Center. In one of several efforts to honor her parents’ memory, the McCrearys have funded the George T. Abernathy Oncology Nurse Fellowship Program. The program will transition registered nurse generalists to be certified in oncology as a specialty practice, elevating care for patients in the Gloucester area. “We wanted to do something to help the nursing staff,” said Robert. “The core thing we are after with this program is to provide advanced education to keep local nurses at our local hospital.”

late wife had been cared for by Riverside nurses, and Raymond wanted his gift to honor the team that cared for her. It was a touching and significant gift that came from his heart.

The College invested a portion of these funds in immediate needs for enhanced equipment including teaching manikins, laboratory training equipment, educational anatomical models and funding for virtual courses and conferences. Remaining funds will be used in the decades to come to enable College faculty to invest in continuing needs for students and to keep abreast of the ever-evolving innovations in health care.

Years later Michael Hamilton, Dean of Student Success at the College, re-established a connection with Raymond who by then was living in a Riverside assisted living facility. As Raymond learned more about the College’s work, he was motivated to name the College in his estate. After Raymond passed away and his estate was being settled, the gift had grown along with the rising stock market into a substantial gift.

“There was no stipulation in the will as to what the College needed to do with his money,” said Mr. Hamilton. “It was for the College to decide how it will be best used. We are very thankful that Mr. Schmidt took action based on the feeling he had for the people who took care of his late wife.”

Program for Genetics and Prevention

The Patricia R. St. Clair Program for Genetics and Prevention Inspires Two Meaningful Gifts Patricia R. St. Clair, a Newport News native and nurse, shared a passion for prevention and education programs with her late husband and Riverside’s previous CEO, Nelson Lewis St. Clair. Patti was inspired to partner with the Riverside Foundation to create a genetics screening program for the early detection of genetic cancer risk factors. The program will offer pre-screening, genetic counseling and genetic testing to identify genes that may predispose a person to a higher risk of cancer, starting with patients at risk for breast cancer, and later expanding to include all cancers.

Reaching more than 2 million Virginians, the program will cover the eastern region of Virginia including the Eastern Shore and the Middle Peninsula.

Patti’s focus on early detection and prevention has inspired many including donors Charlie Spencer and the Helen W. Bell Foundation whose stories illustrate the powerful ripple effect of Patti’s determination. “I love talking and working with people who have the same passion as I do. Together, we can make a difference,” said Patti.

Dr. Catherine Lintzenich, a Riverside Medical Group provider and Board member, was inspired to become a physician champion of the Riverside Foundation after hearing Chief Philanthropy Dr. Catherine Lintzenich Officer Kristen Witt’s description of the impact of the Foundation on patients and team members during COVID-19.

Dr. Lintzenich was moved to involve her mother-in-law, Madonna Lintzenich, in marshalling further support. Madonna was a good friend of the late Helen W. Bell and is now the trustee of the Helen W. Bell Charitable Foundation.

After some thorough conversations about Riverside projects where funding could have a valuable impact, Madonna and the Bell Foundation settled on supporting the Patricia R. St. Clair Program for Genetics and Prevention.

Spencer, who passed away in 2016 due to complications of Hodgkin’s lymphoma. During their nearly 60-year marriage, Charlie gave her most of the credit for bringing up their two children and creating a loving home. Charlie spoke of her and her accomplishments with deep love and admiration, “Anne was the greatest human being, with the uncanny ability to concentrate her whole attention on you.”

As a longtime resident of the Peninsula, Charles R. Spencer, Jr. was a respected civic leader and a true southern gentleman who was involved in many organizations that contributed to the health and wellness of the Newport News community. Charlie, as he was known to family and friends, believed education to be the single most important gift to give someone.

Charlie lost his personal battle with cancer in January 2022. As Riverside embarks on this important work, we are privileged to honor the Spencers’ collective legacy, life of service and passion for education through this vital resource for our patients and community.

Making a Difference on the Eastern Shore For the fourth year, local car club the Eastern Shore Cruisers hosted a well-attended car show to benefit the Riverside Shore Cancer Center.

The much-loved local event, called Axing Out Cancer, draws crowds of car enthusiasts, and the substantial proceeds are used locally to help cancer patients who find that financial obstacles are impacting their treatment.

——————F—————— Friends of David Doughty is a Shore group that hosts a fundraising golf tournament each year at Bay Creek Resort and Golf Club. Sheriff Doughty and the Northampton County deputies organize the event each year to benefit Riverside Shore Hospice’s Camp Fragile Hearts, a day-long camp for children who have experienced loss of a family member or loved one due to death, divorce, deployment or other distance.

Girls Day Out Boutique and Bras for a Cause on Chincoteague Island hosted a creative and humorous bra decorating event to support breast cancer survivors at the Riverside Shore Cancer Center. The boutique ‘sold’ votes for $1 apiece so that people in the community could vote on their favorite bra. The event raised a very generous sum that will support the needs of patients undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

Long time Zumba instructor and community advocate Deyonka Chandler was inspired by her friends and students who are breast cancer survivors to support local breast cancer patients.

For the second year in a row, Chandler and her Zumba students collected donations during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. They directed those donations to the Riverside Shore Cancer Center to support its patients who have financial needs that impact their ability to fight their disease.

Making a Difference on the Middle Peninsula Tree of Lights

For the second year, we found it necessary to gather virtually for the safety of our community to celebrate the annual Tree of Lights event in support of Riverside Walter Reed Hospital.

This year’s event was dedicated to Making Spirits Bright for the health care heroes at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital. Our sponsors and friends enjoyed delicious meals from Scoot’s BBQ and Olivia’s in the Village, fresh-baked snickerdoodles from Scratch Bakery, exclusive wine from Williamsburg Winery, plus a few seasonal surprises. Notably, Scoots BBQ made extra meals that were delivered that evening to the team members at Riverside Walter Reed so that even those who were working the evening shift could enjoy a delicious dinner. A brief video broadcast gave our leaders, colleagues and community a chance to say thank you to our amazing team members for their dedication and resilience.

A Passionate Advocate for Local Health Care Our dear friend and long-time supporter, Wanda Friend, recently passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Wanda was a passionate advocate of Riverside Walter Reed Hospital for nearly a decade. She helped raise both awareness and dollars to improve the Wanda Friend lives of our patients and their families as well as to expand our campus and services at the hospital. She was vivacious, creative and always had a smile on her face. We are grateful for the many gifts of time, talent and treasure she shared with Riverside and her community. She will be dearly missed.

Paving the Way

In June, between pandemic surges, the Riverside Foundation was grateful to be able to safely gather key community partners to describe Riverside’s vision for growth on the Middle Peninsula. Hosts Cara and Randy Randolph provided the setting for an intimate evening with Riverside Walter Reed Hospital leaders Esther Muscari Desimini, Hospital President, and Melvin D. Schursky, M.D., Chief Medical Officer to talk about facility and service enhancements in the works.

Creating an environment for cutting-edge health care in a rural setting directly translates into immense benefits for patients who can receive vital care and services close to home.

Paving the Way event in June 2021 described planned enhancements at Riverside Walter Cara, who serves on the Board of Directors at Walter Reed, knows how Reed Hospital fortunate the community is to have an exceptional hospital in their backyard. Cara and Randy were inspired to make a gift to the Cancer Center, in honor of their dear friend, Billy, who was cared for by Riverside.

“Though he lost his battle with cancer, there have been and will continue to be many successful outcomes because of the exceptional care provided.

Billy’s presence is seen everywhere through the beauty he created with his landscaping and the cultivation of his close friendships. We can’t think of a better way to honor him than to help create a beautiful space for patients and their families to heal.”

Making a Difference in Williamsburg An exciting plan to expand Riverside’s medical office building in Williamsburg is a significant investment for the benefit of local residents.

Patients will find care to be more accessible and convenient in the new building and will find more specialty services under one roof. The design of the building centers around patient convenience and takes advantage of leading-edge concepts in efficient patient care. For example, key services can be co-located with their partner services (think orthopedics and physical therapy) to make care easier for patients and to facilitate synergy and communication among care providers.

Adria Vanhoozier, President of Riverside Doctor’s Hospital Williamsburg, stated, “it is allowing both our primary care and our specialists to come together in one building, and it’s an expansion of the already robust existing services in the market.”

——————F—————— The Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg gave the Bates Family Garden at Riverside Doctors Hospital Williamsburg a “Garden Refresh” in the fall.

Eleven members of the organization donated their time and talents to give the garden a new look. Flowers and a new tree were planted and weeds were picked as part of the refresh. The Garden provides a place for patients and family members to escape and enjoy the beauty of their surroundings.

Making a Difference on the Peninsula Through its donors, the Riverside Foundation was proud to provide our partners in Radiation Oncology with items such as blanket warmers and ceiling decorations for patients to use and enjoy during their procedures. The ceiling images celebrate some of our natural Virginia beauty, including mountains, beaches and sea life.

A recent CT patient in the “sea life room” was a biologist who shared stories and facts about the animals on the ceiling while receiving his scan, helping him relax and enjoy his time during treatment. The Foundation is so grateful to our donors who provided the funds to create these rooms for our cancer patients, making one step of their journey just a little bit easier.

——————F—————— The adolescent treatment program at Riverside Behavioral Health Center in Hampton provides intensive care for adolescents ages 12-17 who have experienced psychological distress and emotional difficulties. The program is designed to help teens learn to cope with and process extreme life experiences. Youth are often referred to Riverside’s adolescent program from across the state when other treatment efforts have not been successful.

Specially trained clinicians and therapists help the children develop effective coping skills and strengthen interpersonal and family relationships. Programming also includes recreation and fitness activities, art therapy, substance abuse support groups, nutrition counseling, and medication education and management. Additional focus is placed on life skills for success and independence post-treatment to include planning, budgeting, cooking, laundry, resume writing, computer labs and gardening.

Holiday gift bags for teen patients at the Riverside Behavioral Health Center.

The Peninsula Community Foundation Children’s Holiday Fund granted funds for holiday gift bags for each child in our care. The bags included hats, gloves, warm socks, lip balm, lotion, paperback or crossword books, travel games and holiday treats. This heartfelt holiday project was comforting to and appreciated by these children who often feel forgotten and alone.
