Children from half the world away made their way to Rivers, MB

By Hal Sveistrup Rivers, MB T he eight h a n nua l Derek Laxdal Hockey School, hosted this year from July 29 to Aug. 2, had an exciting new angle, with the participation of three minor hockey players from Beijing, China. Seven-year-old Yiteng Ye, eight-year-old, Jinxuan Wu and 10-year-old, Shuyuan Liang are all good skaters and have been taught basic hockey skills by Canadian coaches. As a result, all three fit comfortably into group one made up of approximately 30 players, aged six through nine years old, and an approximately sized group of 10 through 14 year olds. The remainder of the 121 participants, a school record, comprised an advanced group. Wu Jong, who brought the youngsters over from China, described the instructors as “very brilliant,” the participants as “powerful and positive” and the arena as “excellent.” He also took 15 registration forms back to Beijing, so the school is expecting a much greater Chinese presence in the 2020 camp. In addition to local participants, most youngsters came from western Manitoba, along with players from Saskatoon, Langenburg and Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, as well as from Medicine Hat and Calgary, Alberta. Each day, each group participated in two one hour and 15 minute sessions of on ice instruction where they practised forward and backward power
