Apple Cream Cheese Dessert

Eaten warm or cold, this scrumptious dessert will leave your taste buds wanting more.

Base: 1 cup flou 1/2 cup butter 1 cup oatmeal 1/3 cup brown sugar 3 Tbsp. cold water Filling: 1 250-g cream cheese 1/3 cup white sugar 1 egg 1 tsp. almond extract 1/4 tsp. salt 6-7 cups peeled apple slices, thinly cut 1/3 cup white sugar 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 tsp. nutmeg 2 Tbsp. cornstarch 1 Tbsp. lemon juice Topping: 2/3 cup flou 2/3 cup white sugar 1/3 cup butter 2/3 cup slivered almonds Preheat oven to 350°F. Base: Add the flou , oatmeal and sugar. Cut in the butter until coarse crumbs. Add the water in and mix just enough to make a ball. Press down in the bottom and 1/2” up the sides of a lightly greased 9x13” cake pan. Bake for about 15 minutes, until light golden.

Filling: While base is cooking, beat the cream cheese, sugar, egg, almond extract and salt together until cream cheese is smooth.

Spread over the crust. In another bowl, add the apples, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cornstarch and lemon juice together. Spread over the cream cheese mixture.

Topping: In a bowl, combine the flou , sugar, then cut in the butter. When crumbly, add the almonds and sprinkle over the apples. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until topping is golden and apples are cooked. Cool and store in the fridge until ready to use.

hen the federal or provincial governments look at agriculture in the context of emissions and carbon taxes, it’s usually seen as a contributor. It’s true that agriculture is a consumer of fossil fuels— burned in tractors and combines or to heat greenhouses— but those in the industry also know that agriculture is on the other side of the equation. According to the 2016 Census of Agriculture, there were 159 million acres in agricultural production, giving farmers a huge role to play in activities like carbon sequestration and managing or mitigating the effects of more severe weather.

We haven’t seen the positive role the industry can play really talked about at the national level, until now. Earlier this month, a Canadian Senate report was released, called “Feast or Famine”. The 11 senators who formed the committee studied how Canada’s efforts to meet its greenhouse gas emissions reduction target might affect the country’s agriculture, agri-food and forestry sectors. The final report included 16 recommendations.

The agriculture sector is important to Canadians. Not just to farmers and rural Canadians, but also those in the downstream industries that depend on it. In 2014, one in eight Canadians was employed in the agriculture and agri-food sectors and those sectors generated nearly $112 billion, or 6.7 per cent, of Canada’s gross domestic product (GDP) in that year.

Kate Jackman-Atkinson In preparing the recommendations, the senators wanted to find a balance between protecting the environment and supporting the foundation of Canada’s economic well-being — Canadian workers and consumers.

In their research, the senators found that both industries were already being impacted by climate change. From more invasive species and frequent forest fires, to irregular weather patterns and more severe floods and droughts, those in the forestry and agriculture industries are on the front lines. Many of the recommendations are ways to foster and strengthen innovation and reward those producers who are undertaking practices that provide benefits to the ecosystem.

The recommendations also aimed to help insulate producers, and the broader, food consuming public, from increasing costs of production. The recommendations include exemptions on fuel costs for heating and cooling machinery used in production, as well as propane and natural gas used

in farming.

To me, the most interesting recommendations were around recognizing the work farmers do to combat climate change and mitigate its effects. Recommendations from the Senate report included building on existing provincial models to develop offset protocols that would allow agricultural producers and forest owners/managers to receive additional income through carbon credits. Senators also want to see research to help establish baseline levels of soil organic carbon, important information that can be used to support the development of offset protocols for carbon sequestration across Canada.

The committee also recommended that federal agencies work with their provincial and territorial counterparts to ensure that there are incentives available across Canada for beneficial management practices. But not only that, they also want to see support for those already doing this type of work, something missing from much of the legislation I have seen proposed.

If governments were serious about actually reducing carbon in the atmosphere, not just about implementing another tax, they would harness the power of those who control the vast majority of Canada’s productive land base.

Right now, there are very few incentives and almost nothing to recognize the large role farmers can play and the work many are already doing. Hopefully that will change.

s I prepared to write this year end column, I looked back at last year’s. In it, I noted it had been a tough year for newspapers in general, as several papers had closed. This year hasn’t seen nearly as many closures across North America and none in Manitoba.

In fact, there has been some new papers start up in the U.S., but I am not sure if there have been start-ups in Canada.

I think the reason that local newspapers are doing a bit better may have been outlined in my last year’s column.

I said a year ago that local newspapers are a much more reliable source of news than Facebook, TV channels or even radio. The closer the news gathering is to the source of the news and the targeted readership audience, the better off everyone gets to be.

Both the Neepawa Banner & Press and the Rivers Banner are having a better year than last year. There are two reasons. Local news is best and advertisers are realizing that while there are lot of newer (and more glitzy) alternatives out there, they may not be as effective as first thought. Pop-up ads on the computer are annoying at best and easily grow wearisome. I find I click away from any internet site that has pop-up ads. TV commercials are very repetitive and also very annoying. Newspapers, and the stories and ads they carry, are more passive, less in your face and offensive to your senses. Your newspaper ad isn’t going to jump off the screen at you or yell in your face. Your newspaper just sits quietly on the kitchen table until you are ready to pick it up. No noise, no sensory overload,

The other thing that is happening is also a matter of quiet reliability. The local paper has no desire to run lies or alternative facts, the so-called “fake news”. No desire to run such garbage, but also, the local paper would not get away with it, even if they wanted to do so. If a local publisher mistakenly runs an incorrect story, it is one thing, but if an intentional misstating of the facts were to happen, the publisher would hear about it within the hour.

Another factor that is slowly coming into play is that Facebook, even without all its fake news problems and data breach problems, is not being seen by as many people as one would think. If we post a story to FB, an ordinary story gets 200 to 300 views. If it is a bigger story, we get a couple of thousand perhaps. In contrast, the Rivers Banner is seen by 4,400 people and the Neepawa Banner & Press is seen by 20,000 people. Granted, not everyone reads their paper cover to cover, but readership surveys show that 8 5 per cent of readers read their local paper every week. The other beautiful thing about a local paper is that you

don’t have to remember where on web sites you saw a story and you don’t have to stay glued to your TV to get the news.

Yes, it has been a tough time for newspapers, but it has turned around. It has been a better year in the local newspaper industry for sure. And here’s an interesting fact. Some well intentioned, but misled soul at Chrysler Canada decided to drop all newspaper ads. They dropped weeklies and dailies cold turkey. Well guess what? It has been about 22 months since that fateful decision and their sales are down by about 22 per cent. Sure, you can advertise all you want. You can use Facebook, websites, TV, radio, they all have their place. You can put posters on Hydro poles if you want. But for local and regional advertising, the best alternative is still the local newspaper.

Hometown: I have always considered Rivers as my hometown.

Where did you attend school? Rivers Elementary, Rivers Collegiate, ACC in Brandon.

Favourite or Dream Vacation Spot: Australia Favourite Food: Peanut butter and honey on toast.

Favourite Holiday: Canada Day. Favourite Music, Song or Artist: I like all music but “rap”.

Favourite Sports Team: Not a sports guy but curling is at the top of the list.

Our home is quiet tonight. There is no scheduled activity, no guilt for simply sitting. The lights on the tree are flickering, the candles on the hearth glowing, and holiday music has just been replaced with a holiday movie. It is time for hot chocolate and pop corn.

The week past was filled with things to do, services to attend, places to go and things to do. Good places and good things. The holiday season becomes filled with gatherings and great food. Looking at my calendar page recording the month of December, all the notations and jottings makes it look like the month was/is busy. It is Christmas, and concerts and programs are a strong traditional part of the celebration.

But tonight. An evening of rest. I have made the season as stress free as possible; no baking, very little gift giving, casual friends gathering. I have all that I need, a collection of crèches, Snoopy ready for a dance, the tree my granddaughter decorated, the Victorian carriage and the team of horses, and greenery on the mantle. All these items have meaning.

The crèches are from near and far, of blown glass and carved wood, with many players and with the main three.

It is good to be reminded that the story of the babe in the manger that I love is the one I grew up with. It is right to have a Mexican babe, an African babe, and any other culture. I cannot impose my chosen image on others, nor can others impose their chosen image on me, presenting it for thought is enough.

The Snoopy was a gift to Ed. He embraced the philosophy of Charlie Brown and the gang, loved the attitude of the dog, especially when he assumed the character of the Red Baron. The dancing dog stays, and comes out annually.

The carriage, complete with a family, was also a gift. It came about the time we moved into the Victorian home.

I love the image of a family on the way to a gathering, for the children are holding gifts. We found the horses later, after several years, and to see the set together you know they were made for each other.

The tree has become less laden. All the decorations that needed to be on the tree when the children were young, no longer deck the tree. The baubles and whatnots are all ones that I have chosen, a blown glass bird with a feather as a tail and two clip on glass candles that I transported from Moscow, and red and gold ornaments. The number of crocheted snowflakes my mother crafted are diminishing, Henry Hoover has discovered they have been stiffened with a sugar concentrate! Remembered that as I witnessed the last of one dangling from his mouth.

T’was the week before Christmas, and I relished in the peace and quiet of my home. Readying myself for the days ahead, of feasting 580--2nd Avenue, Rivers and family.

Lights of Love Campaign The tree you see in this photo belongs to the Riverdale Health Services District Foundation and is the focal point of its Lights of Love campaign. For a donation, a bulb is lit in memory of a loved one on the Lights of Love tree. The names of donors and their loved ones are then posted at Rivers Super Thrifty Pharmacy. The tree presently being lit is located in the pocket park just to the west of Super Thrifty on Second Avenue. Originally, a beautiful huge spruce tree just on the north-west corner of Riverdale Municipality office proudly carried the annual Lights of Love. As the trees there aged, roots started to grow under and into the foundation of the building and the 60’+ trees became unstable and therefore unsafe. The Lights of Love tree was moved to its present location in 2017 and continues to shine brightly with wonderful memories while continuing to promote the great work of the Riverdale Health Foundation.

Proceeds from this campaign are directed to improving health care in Rivers and District. Some of the most recent projects they have been involved with include new examination tables for the Doctors offices (coming soon), new tub for PCH, window roller shades in the Telehealth room, Straker power stretcher, Palliative bed, window roller shades in the Doctors offices and all nine Rehab rooms, new tub for Rehab patients and of course, Telehealth. Thank you to the Riverdale Health Services District Foundation for all the important work you do in our community and thank you to the people who assist them by taking part in the Lights of Love campaign.

Swedish Butter Cookies

Holiday treat for your Christmas cookie tray. For a really festive look, use red and green cherries.

1 cup butter 1/2 cup white sugar 1 egg yolk 1 Tbsp. cream 1 tsp. vanilla 2 cups flou 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 cup chopped pecans 1 egg white 1/2 cup chopped pecans for rolling maraschino cherries

Cream the butter and sugar together until flu . Beat in the egg yolk, cream and vanilla. Stir the baking powder into the flou . Add to the creamed mixture. Add the pecans. Shape into 1” balls; dip in egg white and then into pecans. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Make a small indentation in center of balls; top with half of a cherry. Bake at 350°F for about 18 to 20 minutes, or until done.

1/2 tsp. cinnamon or more to taste Preheat oven to 375°F and bake the tart shells for 5 to 7 minutes. While shells are baking, mix the eggs, honey, sugar and cream. Stir in the flou , ground almonds, almond extract and cinnamon. Add the nuts of choice to the mix. Fill tart shells and continue baking for 15-18 minutes, or until golden brown and set in the middle.

Out of Helen’s Kitchen Crescent Rolls

These rich crescent rolls are a nice accompaniment to a meal.

They freeze well, so they can be made ahead of time.

1 cup milk 1/2 cup butter 1/4 cup warm water 1 /2 tsp. sugar 2 1/2 tsp. traditional yeast 1/4 cup sugar 1 tsp. salt 3 eggs 4 cups flou extra melted butter for brushing Scald milk. That means, in a pot on medium heat, heat milk to a near boil. As it is heating up, stir occasionally. When a lot of little bubbles come up in the milk, it’s ready. Scalding makes breads and anything with yeast flu r and lighter.

Take milk from the heat and add the butter to melt. Leave to cool slightly. As milk is cooling, add the tsp. of sugar to the warm water. Stir in the yeast and leave in a warm place to rise. In a mixng bowl with a bread hook attachment, add the milk, yeast, sugar, salt, eggs and 2 cups flou . When that is combined, add remaining flour and at medium speed, beat for 5 to 6 minutes.

Grease bowl, add dough, cover and let rise for about 1 hour.

Remove dough onto flou ed surface. Divide in three sections and roll each section into a circle about 1/2 inch thick. Brush lightly with melted butter. Cut each circle out into 12 to 20 pie shaped wedges. (It depends on the size you want.) Starting with the wide edge, roll each piece up and bend slightly to make a crescent shape. Place on a lightly greased baking sheet; cover and let rise again until doubled in bulk. This takes about 1 hour.

If you prefer a glossy look, beat an egg with 1 Tbsp. water and brush rolls before baking. Bake in a preheated 375°F oven for 15 to 20 minutes, or until nicely browned.

What a wonderful time of year! Snow on the ground and Christmas just around the corner. This year, at the Harvest, has seen many goals not just met - but exceeded. The main one being the generosity of our community. Whether it was people donating their Peak of the Market vegetables, the high school collecting on Halloween night for the Harvest, the Elementary school filing a canoe with

donations, or people donating money, our community came together to make sure there was enough for everyone who came to our door. While we can always use more can veggies, cereals or kids snacks, I would like to say, well done. Our effort would be for nothing without all of you.

This year has also seen some changes. As many of you know by now, the Zion

Pentecostal Church bought the old Ukrainian Hall and moved in there Nov 1st. The Church was kind enough to bring us with them in the move. We now have a new space set up in the back portion of the building and are very grateful to everyone who helped with the move, as well as the few renovations that we needed completed. We now have our own door at the back and are there every Thursday. We would like to let

everyone know that our last Thursday before Christmas break will be December 20. We will resume regular hour stating Jan. 3 .

The Xmas supper was held November 26th,with 22 members present. Thank you to Shelly Moms Kitchen for the delicious meal. A time of fellowship and games were enjoyed after the meal.

Reports and minutes were read and adopted.

There were no new applications for membership this month. There were also no requests for donations this month. A Xmas message was received from District #2 Commander Barb Roberds wishing everyone a merry xmas and happy new year. The early bird draw winner was Janice Worth.

3,500 scans per year Minster Friesen pointed out that the new machine, which is projected to perform approximately 3,500 scans per year, is expected to reduce the number of inter-faci l it y t ransfers required for patients who would prev iously have been transferred to another site, such as Brandon or Winnipeg, to receive a diagnostic scan. As patients who would have had scans at other sites are scheduled for MRI appointments in Dauphin, spaces will open up at other sites, reducing waits province-wide.

new site builds on our work to reduce w a it times to transform our health-care system,” said Health, Seniors and Active Living Minister Cameron Friesen. “As we make changes to ensure access to consistent, reliable care, we will continue to invest in opportunities to reduce wait times for Manitoba families.”

30 per cent improvement Friesen also noted that since July 2017, average wait times for MRIs have seen a 30 per cent improvement, declining to 16 weeks from 24 weeks.

“This project has been a testament to the dedication and commitment shown by our stakeholders, who worked diligently to bring this important diagnostic service to this part of the health region and province,” said Penny Gilson, chief executive officer, Prairie Mountain Health.

from MLA Greg Nesbitt The holiday season is a time when families come together and citizens take a pause from the day to day hustle and bustle of life to remember all the good things we share as citizens of the Riding Mountain constituency in the Province of Manitoba, in the most wonderful country in the world – Canada.

The tradition of community involvement is alive and well in our province.

Theatre groups, 4-H clubs, seniors’ organizations, service clubs and sports teams are just a few of the oppor-

tunities rural residents have.

These community organizations are something we can all benefi from and can be proud of.

Committed Volenteers Volunteers are the heart of our communities and the strength of our province, and I am very honoured to say the constituency I represent in the Manitoba Legislature is rich with people with such commitment.

Immediate roadside suspensions proposed under new legislation

By Greg Nesbitt MLA Riding Mountain Impaired driving continues to take the lives of too many Manitobans, so our government is adopting much tougher sanctions against drunk drivers while keeping more police on Manitoba’s roads to catch them. Under our newly proposed amendments to the Highway Traffic Act, motorists who drink and drive would lose their driver’s licences, their vehicles and a lot of money.

Under our changes, immediate roadside prohibitions would be put in place against drivers who register a “warn” on an approved screening device, indicating a blood-alcohol content (BAC) of between .05 and .08.

These drivers would face a new fine of at least $200 for a first offence, increasing to at least $400 for a third or subsequent offence. Their vehicles would also be impounded for three days for a first offence, seven days for a second offence and 30 days for a third or subsequent offence. Those caught a third or subsequent time would be required to drive with an ignition interlock for one year. These new sanctions would come in addition to existing licence suspensions and other sanctions for drivers who register a “warn” on roadside screening devices administered by police.

For first-offence drivers who register a “fail” on a roadside screening device, indicating a BAC of .08 or over but causing no injury or death, police would have the discretion to impose a new fine of at least $500,

as well as a mandatory ignition interlock for one year instead of a criminal charge. These new sanctions would be comparable to those applied after convictions and would come on top of the existing pre-conviction 90-day licence suspension and 30-day vehicle impoundment.

With the new penalties, a driver registering a “warn” would face a cost of at least $2,600 for a first offence and about $3,200 for a third or subsequent offence. The minimum cost for failing a roadside screening would be more than $3,300.

The new legislation would also be much more helpful to police. An officer would be able to proceed quickly with the tougher sanctions for a driver who fails a roadside screening for the first time, rather than spend four hours processing that drunk driver for a criminal charge.

With the new approach, roadside testing would take as little as six minutes, so officers would be back on our streets much more quickly to catch more drunk drivers.

Impaired driving is the second-most prevalent contributing factor in fatal crashes in Manitoba. In 2017, drunk driving accounted for 32 per cent of people killed and six per cent of those injured in collisions in our province. These numbers are way too high.

With immediate roadside prohibitions, our government would hit drunk drivers where it hurts while creating a culture of sober driving and improving safety on Manitoba’s streets and highways.

RM Council of Oakview meeting notes Dec. 4, 2018 Committee Reports The Roads and Drainage Committee discussed the removal of a beaver dam that is holding back water in Ward 3. Areas in the municipality that need to be scrub-cut to improve snow removal and/or safety were discussed.

The Machinery Committee reported that a seal had to be replaced in the grader, but it has been fixed.

New tires are required and were authorized to be ordered and installed. An additional radio for the loader was discussed. The Waste Management and Recycling Committee discussed changing the hours of garbage pick-up and landfill hours during the Christmas season. Public Works Supervisor, Melvin Alex, attended the meeting and discussed areas that need to be scrub-cut and updated Council on repairs required on the grader.

A delegation comprised of Lois Hyndman, Beat Gamper, Chris Raupers, Allan Riley and Phillip Kleinsasser attended the

meeting and informed council that they would like to see the zoning by-law changed so that a conditional use hearing is held in the municipality if the animal units of a proposed operation are over 200.

Siting requirements for proposed intensive hog barns and effects on the environment, adjacent land, drainage, water supply and the possible spread of disease were discussed. Provincial guidelines in regards to intensive livestock operations were discussed. Information received through The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) was presented to council for review.

A public hearing was held to hear representation for or against the proposed Conditional Use Order Application No. 08 -O18 -CU, being made by Ryan Schroeder to provide for the establishment of a Non-Farm Dwelling within the “AG” Agricultural General Zone. Council approved the application.

Council reviewed infor-

mation received from Community Planning in regards to the closing of public road in Rapid City. A surveyor is preparing a plan with a deposit number so that the by-law can be circulated for provincial review.

Meetings were held with two ministers during the annual AMM conference.

Council reviewed information received from MWSB in regards to water north of the river. A survey was sent out and more information is to be obtained in regards to this in the future.

Unfinished business Rapid City utility: A draft water rate by-law was reviewed by council as well as information received from Way To Go Consulting. RM of Oakview is requesting approval from the Public Utilities Board for the Rapid City Utility deficits of $27,968 in 2016 and $18 ,073 in 2017, with said deficits to be recovered through transfer from the accumulated cash surplus account of the Utility.

Rapid City lagoon: Contec Inc. was contacted to place a meter at the Rapid City lift station and a representative was out to Rapid City Nov. 30. It was determined that the outside meter would not be accurate and therefore it was not installed.

Information received from our engineer, Sustainable Development and Craig McDonald was reviewed with council.

Rapid City Reservoir Restoration: A meeting that was held on Nov. 30, 2018 was discussed as well as a public meeting to discuss the project to be held on Dec. 10, 2018 . Council authorized the Rapid City Beach and Reservoir Committee to dispose of the excavated material on Parcels 56 and 57 in Rapid City.

Property standards: Information from Commissionaires, a by-law enforcement agency, was reviewed with council. Costs and procedures to be taken to

contract them to enforce our property standards by-law are to be obtained.

The Oakview indemnity by-law was given first reading.

Councillor Mark Gill and Councillor Walt Froese declared a personal interest in the following items and withdrew from the meeting for three road gravelling resolutions.

Council authorized the C.A.O. to transfer the following amounts from the Oakview Operating Fund to the reserve funds as per the 2018 financial plan: $130,000.00 to the Machinery Reserve Fund, $81,711.35 to the Gas Tax Reserve Fund, $40,000 to the Recreation Reserve Fund, $50,000 to the Building Reserve Fund, $30,000 to the Fire Reserve Fund.

Council authorized the C.A.O. to transfer surplus funds of up to $35,000 to the Oak River Utility Reserve Fund from the Oak River Utility Operating Fund for 2018 and $2,000 from the Oak River Utility Operat-

ing Fund to the Oakview General Operating Fund to cover administration costs of the Utility and $600 to the Oak River Utility Fund and $380 to the Rapid City Utility fund for fire hydrant rental for 2018.

Interest earned on the following perpetual care trust funds to the respective cemetery committees: Oak River Cemetery, Marney Cemetery, Miller Cemetery, Pettapiece Cemetery, Rivers Mennonite Cemetery and White Bank Lea Cemetery.

Council designated 2018 as the tax sale year.

Trophies approved Council agreed to donate trophies to the Atom A Tournament of Champions to be held in Oak River in January 2019. Council agreed to renew one year agreements with waste collection/hauling contractors in Oak River for 2019.

Council approved account of $2,629,053.54 and unpaid invoices amounting to $38,174.38 .

Riverdale Municipality Council Strategic plan adopted by council

Council adopted the 2018 Strategic Plan including our Vision, Mission & Value Statements and our 2018 Milestones/Projects.

Council approved the application for license to construct water control works (construct dam) on NW 31-11-20W & SW 31-11-20W to restore wetland function submitted by Ducks Unlimited on behalf of D & D Treloar.

Council agreed to the terms set out in the Building Code Services Contract with the Office of the Fire Commissioner and accepted the fee increase from $3 per capita to $4 per capita.

Get Christmas crafty with homemade ornaments Submitted

Handmade gifts, trinkets and treats help make the holiday season special.

Although cookies and other baked goods are some of the most popular homemade creations this time of year, gift-givers young and old can put their talents to use with various craft projects.

Ornaments and decorations are one such idea. Here are some clever and, nottoo-time-consuming craft projects to try this holiday season.

• Mini sleighs: Create miniature replicas of Santa’s famous sleigh. Paint several popsicle sticks to form the main body of the sleigh and glue them together. Put one at the top perpendicular to the others to serve as the steering rudder. Two silver-painted popsicle sticks

placed on their thin sides act as the blades of a sled.

• Popcorn garland: Garland made of popcorn is a classic handmade holiday project. For a new twist, toss the popcorn with food coloring and allow it to dry before stringing for some bright color on the tree.

• Photo ornaments: Print out several different photos that you love. Purchase round or square thin wood pieces from a craft store and attach the photos with Mod Podge®. When dry, drill a hole through the top and thread with twine.

• Advent calendar: Make an Advent calendar to count down to Christmas by covering a foam board with fabric. Use paper tags or small ornaments and write a number on each for each day of the month. Hang these all from the board. As each day passes, move the

tag or ornament to the tree.

• Wooden snowf lakes: Have children collect small twigs from outdoors, as well as holly leaves and some sprigs of evergreen. Arrange similarly sized twigs in the shape of snowflakes and glue together, or tie with twine. Embellish with stickers, glitter, dried berries, and more.

• Dough ornaments:

Anyone can have fun molding their own ornaments, letting them dry and then painting them. Use cookie cutters to get perfect holiday shapes. Craft stores sell various types of modeling clays and lightweight modeling materials. Or, make your own salt dough.

• Reindeer bottle topper: Put to use any wine corks you have lying around. At-

creating dentures that truly fit perfectly.

• Sweet sentiments: Use old Scrabble® letter tiles to form a favorite holiday phrase, like “Joy to the World.” Glue the tiles together and hang from the tree on a piece of ribbon.

Dauphin MRI to take load off of Brandon

“T he add it ion of t h is equipment in Dauphin will enable Manitobans in this part of the province to access these valuable services much closer to home.”

New direction At the press conference, Wright said Shared Health used to be called Diagnostic Services and it currently includes all of Manitoba except W i n n ipeg a nd Brandon, but as of April 2019 Manitoba’s two largest cities will also come under Shared Health. “This allows us to go in direction like no other time before,” said Dr. Wright.

Everything in a rush, as school heads into its final week. Yet with volleyball gone and basketball not due to start till after the holidays, few major events have actually happened during the last two weeks.
