13th annual Northern Pike Classic

Serving the Rivers, Rapid City and Oak River areas for 109 years

March 30, 2018

Hal Sveistrup Rivers Game & Fish

On Saturday, March 14, 34 youth (15 years and younger) and 215 adult fishers, accompanied by a throng of well-wishers and curious spectators, quickly transformed Lake Wahtponah into a satelite community. The occasion was the 13th annual Northern Pike Classic hosted by the Rivers and Area Game and Fish Association. A temperature of -8ºC exacerbated by a nasty wind did little to dampen the enthusiasm of competitors. In all 38 pike were caught, measured, recorded and released. Three members of the youth contingent catching the longest fish were to be awarded trophies, but only one fish measuring 54.2 cm was caught by Alivah Kennedy. Second and third place were determined by a draw of registration numbers and were awarded to Dexter Connally and Brayden McKinnon. Olivah also received a $50 gift certificate, Dexter, a $30 gift certificate and Brayden, a $10 gift certificate. Each of the three also became the owner of an ice fishing rod. The gift certificates and fishing rods were donated by Jo-Brook Outdoors of Brandon. The following is a list of the top five adult competitors, their fish lengths and cash prize amounts: Timothy Usunier, Souris, $1,000, 79.8 cm; Rae Weins, Rivers, $750, 77.8 cm; Chris Greenaway, Hamiota, $500, 75.0 cm; Brandon Radiator, Brandon, $250, 73.0 cm; Cory Burke, Virden, $200, 71.0 cm. The five remaining successful fishers, each of whom received a cash prize of $100, were:
