The Rivers/Daly Fire Department found themselves having a busy weekend with three separate fires attended to (one being called back before arrival) in a two day period.

Not shown: On Saturday, May 16, 7:35 p.m., RDFD was dispatched to a residential fire alarm, in the RM of Elton, and were cancelled prior to departure.

Crews brought the fire under control around 4:20 a.m. and remained in scene until 6:30 a.m.

Grade 12 Interdisciplinary Studies in Science class at Rivers Collegiate planned a project for Riverdale Harvest.

Dubbed the Boat Load of Food, students secured a canoe from Rolling River School Division with an intent to f ill it with non-perishables. Although the campaign was fully organized by that class, the original idea came from a suggestion made by harvest volunteer Liliane Dupuis.

“I heard the idea at a meeting in Brandon. St. Augustine School had tried Fill a Canoe in conjunction with the 10-day Festival du Voyaguer in Winnipeg in February. It was very successful and whenever I hear food bank, my ears always perk up!”

She then brought the suggestion to Riverdale Harvest, which supported the idea and asked her to present the promo-

month-long promotion, which culminated in a ceremonious presentation on March 20 to Riverdale Harvest president Heather Gray and Liliane.

When all was said and done, the scales at Riverdale Harvest noted a total of 434 pounds, “a fabulous amount,” says Heather.

“We are so pleased they decided to help those we serve. A lot of times kids don’t get enough credit but this group of students certainly deserves some praise.

Elementary school staff member/Harvest volunteer Yvonne Crouch initiated a similar campaign in her school. That threeweek effort simply encouraged students to leave product in the canoe; 87 pounds of food was collected from the younger group on Thursday, March 22.

More to Covid-19 than meets the eye A

s Manitoba’s combination of good management, good fortune and good luck produces enviable COVID-19 results, there are some deeper lessons to be learned.

C-19 hit highly populated areas really hard. Places like New York suffered immensely and I believe there were many reasons. They live in densely populated areas. They have a high population of Jewish and Italian people, whose culture exhibits lots of hugging, kissing and general camaraderie. New Yorkers maybe travel a lot internationally or are in close contact with people who do. All that said, it was, as was common around the world, that a high percentage of the deaths were among elderly people or people with compromised immune systems. In contrast to Manitoba care homes, we are told that many New York, Montreal and Toronto care homes had four people to a room. If we think about it, it must be a huge, if not impossible task, to maintain isolation and the necessary sanitation standards with four people in a room.

In Manitoba, it has been reported (as of May 18), that there have been seven deaths.

It was also reported that there have been 29 deaths from seasonal influenza. I think it is terribly important that we determine the actual numbers of influenza cases and deaths. If in fact, the influenza deaths are in care homes, maybe testing needs to be done more often and isolation protocols be instituted more often.

It appears that we are losing a lot of older people to the flu and maybe that can be curbed by applying what we have learned from COVID-19.

Had we known, and I think we should have known, how to fight and contain C-19, we might have been able to avoid so much fear and damage to our economy. It caught my attention when the top medical official in the U.S., Dr. Faucci, said he doesn’t give economic advice. Those words sound familiar, as when I was mayor of Neepawa in 1999-2002, I implored the RHA officials to not cut back to 100 beds at Neepawa’s care home. I said at the time, that people would retire to Neepawa to be in line to go to a nice new care home. I was right. I was assured of two points back then. One, I was told that health officials didn’t have a mandate for

I guess that last statement is partly true, but if we learn how to fight flu like we have learned to fight C-19, maybe we will need more beds if more people hopefully survive the flu.

As to the economic development aspect, I was also right as towns that have medical clinics, care homes and hospitals attract workers and industry. People who come to work in these towns experience an interesting phenomenon. Their parents move as well to

be close to the kids and grandkids. After a few years of retirement, the retirees move to the care home. Health care has always had an economic development component, in spite of what health officials want to think about their role in life.

Ironically, C-19 has changed the world and how we do things, especially in terms of economic activity.

The articles on gun control from Mazier and Waddell require a response. May I have space? First, there is controversy as to what is an assault rifle. Some claim only a fully automatic such as the M16 military rifle qualifies. Others say non military such as the AR15 are assault rifles. I will refer to them by their number designations, with AR15 including the approximately 500 other copycat manufacturers.

The M16 fires continuously as long as the trigger is depressed, up to 800 rounds per minute. The AR15 fires one round for each pull of the trigger, and is rated for 45 aimed rounds per minute. Without aiming, it can handle 200 to 400 rounds per minute.

Most big game rifles are .270 to .300 calibre, firing bullets that weigh from 120 to 215 grains. The AR15 fire .223 calibre bullets that weigh from 40 to 80 grains. Compare with the rimfire .22 rabbit gun bullets which weigh 30 to 60 grains.

I hunted deer and small game for over 50 years. To stop a deer in it’s tracks use bullets of 180 or 215 grain weight.

However, if you really enjoy tracking wounded deer for miles use 120 grain. The difference in knock down punch is almost unbelievable. I cannot imagine hunting big game with 80 grain bullets. Maybe that’s the reason for 45 rounds per minute.

There is a valid reason for such tiny bullets for military use.

If you kill an enemy soldier, you take 1 man out of action. If you wound him, you tie down several soldiers, doctors and nurses to look after him. I disagree with Mr. Trudeau here.

The AR15 and M16 are designed to wound, not to kill, as many people as possible, as quickly as possible. Before Vietnam, the military gave up the deadly 30 calibre in favour of wounding.

In my hunting years, I quickly discovered that one almost never kills a deer with a third or subsequent shot. To avoid wasting expensive ammo, I loaded only 2 rounds. Quite simply, if you fire more than 2 shots, you are just filling the air with lead, hoping a deer will run into it.

nihilated with single shot muzzle loaders. Why on earth do we now need a submachine gun to shoot a coyote or skunk.

I farmed for 45 years, raising sheep and poultry, both very susceptible to predators. I cannot recall a single incident when the ability to fire 40 rounds a minute would have been any advantage. By the way, the worst predator by far is neighbourhood dogs, including your own.

Moving on to the “law abiding citizens” argument.

The shooter who took a submachine gun to the Institute Polytecnique was a law abiding citizen until he sprayed the school with bullets killing 14 women. Mr. Bissonnette was a law abiding citizen until he took his fully legal AR15 to the church and pumped out 60 rounds at point blank range, killing 6. The Texas music festival shooter broke no laws as he accumulated 1,500 rounds of ammo and enough mags to hold them. He was a law abiding citizen until he sprayed those 1,500 rounds into the crowd at close range, killing over 50. The common thread. They were lousy marksmen,

making up for that with sheer firepower. And they were all law abiding citizens. Until they snapped. A terrifying sight three weeks ago. A protest rally at the Minnesota Legislature asking for an end to the coronavirus lockdown. And many of the protesters carried submachine guns and extra magazines.

And not one of them was disobeying any law. What the hell has our society become.

In conclusion, to any hunter who thinks he needs 45 rounds a minute to kill a deer or a skunk, STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM MY PLACE. And to Mr. Mazier, polls show that 82 per cent of Canadians are opposed to military style weapons in civilian hands. Assuming that you follow Conservative mathematics rules, you are probably not aware that 82 per cent is a majority. But it is. In a democracy, the majority rules.

I

t’s a phrase that first became real for me when I became a widow. The changes were immediate, intrusive and real. I adapted, morphed, started over, emerged, so many changes in just one moment. Well, the changes took a great deal longer than one minute, but the catalyst was a mere moment.

The term now has become widespread, and the results of our new normal may forever change the way we think and live. We may forget the old ways very quickly, miss some of them and shrug a good riddance to others.

What I do hear is the renewed sense of community that is being experienced. Our prairie history is filled with wonderful stories of communities coming together: the first schools and churches; building bees when someone lost a home or barn to fire or storm; quilting bees; chicken and pig killing bees. Community working together, caring for one another, in spite of differences of creed or politics. We are proud of these stories, they have made their way into the community history books, they formed our sense of responsibility to and for others.

We are finding new ways to celebrate. The lad given the all clear from cancer witnessing the parade of the community past his home – horns blasting, sirens shrilling and wailing, placards and balloons. The senior being

will let you in on a little secret. It’s no secret to those who know me well, so when they read what follows, it will not catch them off guard.

I wage a constant battle with anxiety and the depression that sometimes comes from it. I have fought that battle for as long as I can remember. I know it’s harmful to me and to those I love– believe me, I’ve learned that the hard way. But the battle continues and as each year passes, it becomes harder to win. At least it did– until a few weeks ago.

Much of my work is done in my home office. I spend several hours each day in reading, research and writing columns and sermons. Sometimes, the words f low freely. At other times, they don’t; and those are the times when anxiety rears its head.

That’s what happened a few weeks ago. I felt a sudden urge to pray for and reach out to someone who was facing a similar problem. After a short prayer, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace and the assurance that for this person and the many others for whom I also prayed in those minutes, everything was going to be okay. A short email message was answered with this simple phrase: “Thanks for thinking of me.” That’s when I began to understand what was happening to me and how to handle it.

In the Apr. 13 entry of his daily devotional book, My Utmost for His Highest, Oswald Chambers notes that some of the burdens God places on us are burdens he does not intend to lift– not now, not ever. But, he continues, God does not want us to carry those burdens alone. He wants us to “roll them over onto him; and ourselves with the burdens.” (see Psalm 55:22) Then, he says, the burden will become lighter and we will be able to do the work that God has called us to do.

Early in my career, I prayed a simple prayer, which I now realize has contributed to the emotional battles I fight. I gave God permission to wake me at any hour,

honoured for her 90th birthday– with short notice, there was a parade of well-wishers, again with the horns and posters. The honoured guest watching from a safe place, distant, surrounded by family and friends, tears of laughter and thanksgiving. Some events make the newspapers– the staff and supporters of education driving around town, checking on students, celebrating our grads with posters on their front lawns.

Those are the visible signs of community coming together.

The quiet, unseen ones are moving, meaningful and plentiful: the individual who has supported almost every business by purchasing gift cards or delivering surprise packages, encouraging owners and recipients; the phoning by groups and individuals; the support to the Community Ministries Centre by individuals and groups; the appreciation expressed for all our front line workers. So many stories yet to be told.

I like this new normal.

I have witnessed and sensed the fear with which some of our community live. They are the vulnerable, they live with the vulnerable. We are fortunate to live in a small, caring community– the staff of the hospital and care home have extended themselves to provide comfort to those who are ill or end of life, comforting family and patient/resident.

And for this, we give collective thanks. I have witnessed the respect shown by most to the restrictions with which we have become familiar– the distance separation in stores, the limits to number of customers, protective shields.

As we open more avenues for gathering, I don’t imagine there is a one of us who will take it for granted. When I can hug my friends and family, when I can coffee with community members, when I can comfortably browse as I shop for groceries, when I can simply stop and chat with whomever, wherever! day or night, to pray for someone. I didn’t need to know why they needed prayer. I just told God that if I felt the urge, I would pray. God has taken me at my word many times, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic became so widespread.

Once I realized what was happening, I made the following entry in my journal: “I will gladly help bear the burdens of others. But I will no longer bear them alone. I will roll them over onto God’s shoulders; and myself with them, and we will bear them together.”

I know that many of my readers share concerns that are similar to mine. Families are scattered. COVID-19 isn’t the only cause of people’s fears. Some of my online friends live in communities where crime rates are high.

They fear for their own safety and for the security of their homes and possessions. And if they get a cough, sniff le or sneeze, they immediately wonder if it’s just their seasonal allergies or if they have COVID-19.

To you and those like you, I offer these words. God wants you to roll your cares, concerns and worries onto his shoulders, and yourself with them. Then the two of you can carry them together and your anxiety will be replaced with God’s peace.

Be strong! Stay safe! Have faith! Together with God’s help, we will survive.

I

t is not always easy to be patient. I would like to go to the grocery store and maybe just walk around in the mall. There are still many restrictions.

Then I think and wonder why I should be in such a hurry. I can wait. Just think of all the blessings I have.

My children will help me if I am really in need. The store will deliver my groceries and I am at that delicate age that I should stay isolated in my cozy home with all the conveniences and more than I really need. My friends are as close as my phone and I know that I can have peace and contentment because God is right here with me in this and understands what I am going through.

What a comfort it is to be sure of my salvation and not have to worry. Sometimes, we just have to be reminded of this and look in the Bible for the right verse for our day.

David often talks about being comforted by God. Psalm 23:4 stands out, “for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me.”

Pedestrian corridor construction resumes on hwy 10 at Onanole Work has resumed on intersection improvements and the installation of a pedestrian corridor across Provincial Trunk Highway 10 at Victor Avenue near Onanole, said Riding Mountain MLA Greg Nesbitt.

“Preliminary work on the project began last fall but could not be completed due to weather conditions,” said MLA Nesbitt.

“I am pleased to report that construction resumed earlier this week to complete the project.

Campaign asks motorists to help keep workers safe

The 2020 SAFE Roads campaign officially launched today.

The annual campaign reminds motorists to lower their speed and drive with extra caution as the summer construction season brings more workers to Manitoba roadways.

"The injury risk increases drastically during spring and summer, as road construction projects get underway throughout Manitoba," said Ron Schuler, Minister of Infrastructure. "These injuries are preventable. A ll motorists should remember that those working on and around our roadways are entitled to a safe and healthy workplace, just like all workers."

The theme of the campaign is Slow Down. We Work Where You Drive. It aims to increase awareness through social media, radio ads and other media that feature construction workers, emergency responders and others who make their living on and near our province's roads.

Jamie Hall, Chief Operating Officer of SAFE Work Manitoba, said the annual SAFE Roads campaign plays a critical role in the overall effort to reduce the number of workplace injuries and illnesses in Manitoba.

"Manitobans who work on

and around our roadways face an injury risk unlike any other.

For taking this risk and for the work they do, motorists owe them their attention and caution. We all need to slow down when driving in construction zones and other areas where they work.”

Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman reminded drivers that for many workers, the road is the workplace. “As the City of Winnipeg embarks upon another year of historic funding for road construction, it is important to remind drivers that roads are a workplace for thousands of Winnipeggers. We all have a part to play to make our roads safer for everyone, and the most important message to drivers who approach construction zones is to use caution and just slow down.”

The annual SAFE Roads campaign has led to increased awareness among drivers of the need to protect the safety and health of Manitoba workers, according to Chris Lorenc, President of the Manitoba Heavy Construction Association and Chair of the SAFE Roads Committee.

"Our research shows the majority of Manitobans are aware of the SAFE Roads campaign and messages about the need to drive with caution when there are workers on or near the roadside," he said.
