A vital part of our communities

hrough their knowledge and their efforts, seniors give a tremendous amount to our towns, villages and rural municipalities. In this week’s paper, we are celebrating Seniors’ Week, which aims to recognize the contributions made by seniors to our communities. You don’t have to look far to see the vital role they play.

The population of seniors in Canada is growing and the 2016 Census showed that our country had reached a milestone; for the first time ever recorded, there were fewer children than seniors. The fastest growing segment of the population in Census 2016 was those over 100 years old. It wasn’t a surprise, just the end result of two long-term trends: longer life expectancies and declining birth rates. These trends aren’t expected to reverse and by 2031, Statistics Canada predicts that almost a quarter of Canada’s population will be over 65 years old.

In some communities, the numbers are even more dramatic. For example, in Neepawa, there were 930 residents over 65 years of age, compared to 835 under 14 years of age. Seniors made up 20 per cent of the town’s population. While some municipalities, such as Oakview, Riverdale and Rosedale buck this trend, in almost all rural communities, seniors form the core of many volunteer groups.

Kate Jackman-Atkinson In 2010, Statistics Canada looked at volunteering in Canada. They found that 36 per cent of seniors volunteered. While this number might seem a little low when you look to those giving time in your communities, there are a few factors at play.

While younger Canadians are more likely to volunteer, probably due in part to school requirements, seniors put in the most hours. The survey found that youths aged 15 to 24 gave an average of 130 hours a year. Seniors, on the other hand, averaged 223 hours a year.

While not age specific, Stats Can found that a small proportion of volunteers do most of the work. They found that in 2010, 53 per cent of the volunteer hours given to not-for-profits and charitable organizations were performed by 10 per cent of the volunteers.

These dedicated volunteers gave more than 390 hours

to their volunteer work, the equivalent of at least 10 weeks in a full-time job. When you take into account health challenges which can reduce the number of seniors who can volunteer, the statistics show that a small number of seniors are responsible for the bulk of volunteer work being done.

Seniors are an extremely valuable part of our communities, both in terms of the work they do and their crucial ability to help lead and mentor the next generation. When I think of my involvement in local organizations, I was either recruited or inspired by a senior in the community. I can point my direct involvement to the role they played in opening my eyes to the organization.

Communities work best when we can leverage the diverse assets each group brings to the table. As individual seniors look at stepping back and taking a very well deserved break, I hope they will do one more task for the communities they clearly care so much about; share their passion with someone younger to help these valuable community assets carry on.

Seniors play a vital role in our communities, but beyond the countless hours behind the scenes and in the public eye, for me, Seniors’ Week is about recognizing those who cared enough about their communities to create something of value all of us can share in.

Nominations closed

f the number of candidates for some positions is any indication, the demand for change is pretty high. There are way more candidates for council than there are seats in some communities. In some places there are acclamations but in Neepawa there are enough candidates that the voters could replace the entire council.

A number of towns and councils will see an election for sure.

There is a definite shift going in rural Manitoba and it is both welcomed and long overdue. Complacency is public enemy number one for progress and growth. It looks like complacency may be taking a back seat finally to a sense of purpose. We hear a lot of talk about and complaints about the need for change. In communities where there are elections, there are some younger people stepping forward.

I have been saying for years now that younger people need to step up into leadership roles for two good reasons.

One is that older people sometimes retire or or just plain get tired. Sometimes they up and quit or even die off leaving a void. Without some younger people to take their place, communities lose stuff like organizations and institutions. Businesses, churches and organizations tend to wither if leadership doesn’t grow into place. The second reason young people need to get involved is that they will be paying for a council’s decisions, be they good or bad decisions, for a lot longer than the older generation. I am 70 and if you are 30, you are hopefully going

Ken Waddell to outlive me and be paying for your council’s decisions for a lot longer than I will likely be paying.

So now that nominations are closed, what are a person’s options. The most obvious is to pick a candidate and get behind them. Go door knocking with them. Help hand out leaf lets. Donate some money as it costs money to run a campaign.

Aside from the election process, what else can be done? There are a lot of options and all are essential to a successful community. Gladstone is looking for help with the fall supper.

So are most other communities. I bet there are lots of openings for people to clear tables or wash pots and pans.

There isn’t a church in the country that wouldn’t like to have more people involved. It has to be pretty discouraging for a church to look at the past 30 years and realize that attendance at funerals is a lot bigger than Sunday services. How come only dead people or grieving people need God? There isn’t a hockey rink, curling rink, community hall or Legion that would turn down help is there?

We tend to focus on councillors, reeves and mayors as our leaders but

there are far more leadership positions than that and never enough to fill the roles.

It is a transition thing. Most councillors gained experience on a rink board or in a service club or chamber of commerce before they took the leap to politics. Don’t be complacent now that nominations have closed. There’s an election to run, there are other community jobs that are begging to be completed. What community can say they have enough of anything? We need more growth, more jobs, more housing, stronger churches, stronger service clubs. If you are of sound mind and body and are spending more than an hour a day in front of a TV or on Facebook, you are probably not contributing as much as you should be to life and community. Remember a lot more people rust out than burn out.

The Rivers and District Chamber of Commerce held its regular meeting on September 18 2018. We had an excellent turn out and some good discussion. Topics discussed were the upcoming Santa parade, the Chamber Christmas challenge and reminders that 2019 dues will need to be paid by the January 2019 meeting. Fees to join the chamber are as follows, $10 for an individual/non-profit organization-$20 for a business with 0 employees-$40 for business with 1-3 employees-$60 for business with 4-6 employees-$80 for business with 7-9 employees and $100 for a business with over 10 employees.

The Santa Parade will be held on Friday November 30 at 7 p.m. (a night parade so let’s light it up good!) followed by pictures with Santa at the Legion hall and goodies handed out.

We once again have a bonfire after the parade along with hot dogs and hot chocolate, with the local fire department doing the cooking and maintaining the fire. Some businesses have indicated they will remain open during the evening to allow the opportunity to get some of that Christmas shopping done.

The winners of the Chamber Christmas Challenge will be presented at this time. The format for the Christmas Challenge will be much the same as last year with a prize of $50 in chamber bucks for the first complete and correct passport and a $150 draw from the remaining entries. We hope that this event will showcase the many goods, services and attractions that our community has to offer. There is something to be said about a small-town advantage and shopping at home. There will be further updates when the passports become available.

Our next meeting will be held at Lee’s Restaurant October 25, at noon, please note this is a Thursday and will be our new meeting day. As always, we would like to remind everyone that any individual or service organization is welcome to join for a very nominal fee. We would invite anyone interested in the chamber to come to a meeting and see what it’s all about and what the benefits are before you join. O

n September 21, The Riverdale Municipality informed the employees of their restructuring plan. For myself, as of October 1, after 28 years and 9 months of dedicated service, I will no longer be the utility foreman and will be moved down to a public works operator. This letter is not meant to dwell on that but rather to thank the citizens of the Town of Rivers for the kindness they have shown me over the years. I have loved my position, I have put my heart and soul into my position because of the people I have served, not for the money. I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to serve this community and I leave my position holding my head high knowing I did a pretty good job. I hope to be able to continue to serve the people of Rivers in my new position as public works operator.

Oakleigh School September 21 “Where Am I?” was correctly identified by Judy Hardy as the cairn at Oakleigh School site. She wrote “My Dad and all his siblings went to this school. I grew up and again reside 1.5 miles away from the site. I have fond memories of jumping on my bike and going to watch my Dad play baseball there. My cousins and I used to go in the school and look around, and as a kid it was pretty cool to be in there!

Information from Manitoba Historical Society states “The Oakleigh Union School District was organized formally in September 1897, and a school was erected at this site in what is now the Rural Municipality of Oakview in 1902. It closed in 1963 and the district was dissolved in January 1965. Its catchment area was divided between Rivers Consolidated School District No. 1484 and Rapid City Consolidated School District No. 2392. A small stone monument was erected at the site in 1983 in commemoration of the centenary of the Rural Municipality of Saskatchewan.”

This cairn now sits on the north-west corner of Rd 116 W and Rd 72N in the RM of Oakview.

Today’s seniors are aging on their terms

Every person is different and that’s why there’s no one-size-fits all solution to aging. Personal preference, health, location, income and a myriad of other factors can drive a person’s decision about how and where they age. One thing is for certain, with a growing population of seniors, there are now more options than ever.

The 2016 Census marked a milestone in Canada’s population; for the first time ever recorded, there were more seniors than children. This trend is a result of ageing baby boomers, longer life expectancies and declining birth rates. Not only did the share of seniors exceed that of children, the fastest-growing population was those over 100 years of age.

Statistics Canada’s projections show this to be part of a long-term trend— by 2031, they predict that almost one in four Canadians will be over 65 years of age. The statistics also show that women make up a larger share of Canada’s population over 65— 20 per cent more women than men were over 65 years of age in 2016 and for those over 85 years of age, there were two women for every man. What does this mean for seniors and their families as they navigate ageing with independence and dignity?

Good health a team effort Health can have a major impact on an individual’s quality of life. While people often think of the role physicians play in health care, they are only one piece of the puzzle, which also includes pharmacists and dental care.

For many seniors, their pharmacist is their most regular contact with the health care system, which gives them a front line role in keeping seniors healthy. According to the Canadian Pharmacists Association, in 2017, half of Canadian adults took at least one prescription drug and 40 per cent of seniors and those with chronic diseases took four or more.

Pharmacists can play an important role in making sure the medications seniors are taking are working to improve their health and quality of life. With an expanded role within the health care system, many pharmacists are providing services beyond just dispensing prescription and over-the-counter medications. Today, pharmacists are offering services such as medication reviews, chronic disease management, immunization services and wellness programs. Many pharmacists also offer a range of comfort and mobility devices. Working with physicians, they can help provide more seamless care to meet seniors’ diverse health care needs.

Options for living Seniors choose their living situations for a variety of reasons. Some want to remain in their own homes, some want fewer commitments and obligations and some have health care needs that require more care. There are options to meet all of these needs.

People with health conditions have different requirements from their living situation; difficulty completing daily tasks, such as getting in and out of bed, getting dressed, preparing meals or making trips to the doctor or store are sure signs that an individual needs some help. For some, this help comes from family members. For those whose families can’t provide this assistance, individuals have the option of either moving to a residence that provides these services or hiring a service to help them in their own home. While both home care and personal care homes are provided by the provincial government, there are also private options.

For many seniors, moving can simplify their lives, giving them the ability to travel or spend more time doing the

things they love. A condo development, such as Riverside Lifestyle Estates, can eliminate housing maintenance chores that seniors may no longer want to perform, as well as offering amenities, such as heated indoor parking, that improve safety. Because it’s not specifically geared towards seniors, this type of housing can have more flexibility in its rules, and its location, in this case overlooking the Wheat City Golf Course, can put recreation or other attractions right on residents’ doorstep.

For some seniors, living in a place built around their specific needs is a priority. These types of developments are called senior’s assisted living facilities. Some, like Rotary Villas, are located in a complex, which includes a medical clinic, pharmacy and hair salon. These facilities are built to allow a senior to remain living there as their care needs grow. They offer more than just a place to live, but also food service, 24-hour on-site staff, social activities and varying levels of hands-on health care.

For some seniors, their wish is to continue living in their own home as long as possible. In addition to governmentprovided home care, there are private services which can offer everything from companionship and help with shopping, to full at home nursing care. Sometimes, they can work with the health authority to provide families with money to help subsidize this care.

Regardless of the type of living arrangement needed by a senior, it’s best to give it some thought and have a plan
