Experience, mediocrity

E

xperience, we all know it’s important, but are we valuing the right kind? I listened to a podcast last week that got me thinking about this topic. It was a conversation with Rick Rubin, one of the most influential music producers in America and in 2006, one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People.

Rubin grew up in Long Island in the late 1970s and was into punk and hip hop. At the time, hip hop was a very niche genre and he found the records being produced bore little resemblance to the music the artists were playing in the clubs. Rubin co-founded Def Jam Records in the early 1980s and began producing more authentic records, along with collaborations with and covers of more mainstream artists. Through this work, Def Jam is mostly credited with bringing hip hop to the mainstream.

Along with those early rap and hip hop artists, Rubin is credited with producing albums that brought many artists into the mainstream. His collaborations with Johnny Cash, beginning in 1994, brought the one-time hit musician out of dinner theatres and back on to the Billboard charts.

He was the 2007 Grammy winner for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical, for his work with the Dixie Chicks, Michael Kranz, Red Hot Chili Peppers, U2, Green Day and Johnny Cash. He won it again in 2009 for his work with Metallica, Neil Diamond, Ours, Jakob Dylan and Weezer. He was a producer on Adele’s Grammy winning

Rubin explained that because of his broad musical interests, we was able to present hip hop in a way that was accessible to a broad swath of Americans whose lives were far from the urban hip hop or rap experience. He explained that as he gained success, people wanted him to recreate his past work, do it the same way as last time, but he knew that the success came from doing something different. He explained that if all you ever listen to is electronic dance music, you’ll only ever make mediocre electronic dance music, that’s the line that stuck with me.

This idea has broad implications and maybe we need to re-think how we view experience. Rubin’s success came, in many ways, from being an outsider. He wasn’t com-

pletely immersed in any one genre. Because of that, he saw similarities between Aerosmith’s “Walk this Way” and Run-D.M.C.’s rap, he saw what others were doing, what was working, what wasn’t and what could be made to work. The problem is that we often discount this type of experience. In a world that’s increasingly specialized, we favour those with deep experience at the expense of those whose experience is broad. While there are certainly times that very specialized skills are needed, more of the same— same background, same experience, same way of thinking— seldom solves a problem and almost never creates something new.

In every segment of the economy, we are becoming more specialized. There are almost no true mixed farms left, and it doesn’t matter were you look–– business, sports or recreation–– the story is the same. While economics and scale often require this, we have to remember what we are losing when our focus narrows.

We are becoming increasingly polarized, specialized and siloed. We need a greater understanding of what outsiders bring to the table and recognize that experience comes in many forms. We need to remember that no revolutionary or world-changing ideas come from inside the box and maybe, now and again, we need to be just a little uncomfortable.

Where am I?

t’s really not that I am a ‘bah humbug’ person, for I believe in Christmas, in gift giving and family gatherings. This holiday season, my heart is heavy for the hurting and the hurts of those around me, friends and family, acquaintances and strangers.

I watch the news. Where are all those who are homeless from the California f ires to celebrate Christmas? Where and how? The mass of refugee migrants, seeking safety and security, living on the move, what does the holiday season look like for them?

The list goes on and on. Those are the cases that make the headlines. The masses of invisible sufferers suffer though they are invisible. There are the hungry and the homeless among us. There are those who can provide food and shelter, and little else, that hear and feel the hype of giving.

I am not alone in my concerns. Postings on Facebook affirm that. I love the one that starts with ‘be present’ rather than ‘buy presents’. The post continues along that line, give of ourselves rather than giving beyond our means. Another thought is to be honest about what Santa gives. Almost every child believes in Santa and I, too, would wonder if Santa didn’t love me as much as he loved others when I see disparity in his giving!

(My mind f litted to the fact that it is possible that more children believe in Santa than they do in God. My God loves all people equally. Thinking about that, it could possibly later affect my view of God.) Just think about it.

What about the families that are estranged? When we have the picture perfect holiday scene, all generations are gathered in loving and wholesome interaction.

Where does that leave those of us that struggle to maintain a positive attitude about our family? Those of us who have lost a loved one, a dream, a marriage, job or a pet, can’t feint one more smile and cheery greeting. Be patient with us. I give my God thanks that this year is a great year. It hasn’t always been so and may not be so next year.

I love the lights of Christmas. They do dispel the winter’s darkness. (I celebrate the lengthening day almost as much as I delight in the celebration of a Saviour!) I love the lights shining from the homes and in the yards. So much so that I am known to wander about long after sunset to enjoy the twinkling lights and decorations. Admittedly, the sight of a def lated Santa hanging from the eaves or slouching in a yard moves me to unmerited mirth. Even the giant Grinch crumpled in a green heap makes me laugh.

No, I am not a ‘bah humbug’ person. I hurt for my loved ones and this world in disrepair and disarray.

I understand that there are days when one wishes desperately that this season was over. This I do know, when I focus on doing some kind deed, not seeking recognition or praise, my attitude improves. There is no bad time to be generous with ‘the least of these’, and there is no better time than now.

It was a great success Saturday Nov. 17. We had fabulous vendors , raffle table and delicious baking that drew a crowd.

We are very pleased to say that we were able to present Rivers Legion Branch #75 with a cheque in the amount of $1400.45.

This money will help purchase new chairs for their club room.

We had some other winners that day as well. Our door prize winners were : Diane Scott -won the John Deere plate set. Hannah and Marley Perrin won the Gingerbread girl inflatable.

Orchid Cactus

At this time of year, we enjoy anything that blooms.

When it is cold outside we all need to add some colour to our daily lives. It is a good philosophy to grow houseplants that are easy keepers, but still give you lots of value from the colour perspective.

My suggestion to everyone is to add some exotic to your regular old house plants and grow Epiphyllum spp. or orchid cacti. Although they only bloom once or twice a year, they are still worth growing as the blooms are spectacular.

There are around twenty different species of orchid cactus that are native to Mexico, Central and South America and the Caribbean.

They are named Epiphyllum from the Greak epi which means "upon" and phyllum which means "leaf". The language of taxonomy or classification is Latin and it is actually a very descriptive language as well. In this case Epiphyllum refers to the lovely flowers that bloom right on the leaf-like stems. Orchid cacti have a rich history as an ornamental accent plant and have been popular amongst gardeners since the 1800's.

Originally, the blooms were a creamy white but now you can find them is shades of red, pink, yellow, orange and even purple.

They are best grown in a hanging basket to allow the long stems to cascade over the pot. The flowers emerge at the ends of the stem and are simply amazing. They are 4 to 6 inches (10 - 15 cm) wide and truly are spectacular.

The stems themselves are broad and flat with serrated

edges. The stems are segmented stems and joined by a midrib.

The media within the pot should be a regular organic soilless mix with some added perilite to ensure it is well drained. As these plants are succulent in nature, it is important to ensure that the media is not waterlogged.

Being native to lush, tropical jungles they like to be kept moist but also need to be well-drained. If you are a bit of an overwaterer, then It does help to ensure this does not harm your orchid cactus by adding some extra large diameter media to the regular mix.

The orchid cactus are not difficult to grow. They need regular watering, occasional fertilization and in return for the spectacular blooms, they also need a period of rest.

Most of my houseplants enjoy the summer outside in filtered shade and when I bring them in, they get a short period of rest in a cool corner of the basement or in the garage if we have a mild fall. During this resting period I generally withhold water but do watch that they do not desiccate.

Once they have rested they come up and enjoy our long nights in a location with bright, indirect light.

It will be necessary to prune your cactus back if you are keeping it happy.

Prune off where the stems join together which will also encourage new growth after blooming or in early spring.

As my plants enjoy the summer outside, this is when they exhibit the most growth so pruning occurs just when they go outdoors thus the new growth is maximized.

Kinew commits to sharing cannabis revenue with municipalities Manitoba NDP Leader Wab Kinew committed to a fair partnership with municipalities at AMM’s annual convention today.

K inew’s government would share one-third of a federal excise tax on cannabis with municipalities in order to promote economic growth across Manitoba.

Kinew’s promise follows the Premier’s decision to refuse to share revenues from both the federal excise tax and the provincial Social Responsibility Fee with municipalities.

“The Premier’s claim there is not enough cannabis revenue to go around is simply not true,” said Kinew. “Manitoba stands to make millions from the legalization of cannabis and municipalities deserve to share in the benefits.

Our NDP team is committed to strong partnership with municipalities that is founded on trust and optimism.”

The Premier has insisted there are no additional costs for municipalities related to the legalization of cannabis, however the Federation of Canadian Municipalities find communities are facing up to $4.75 million per 500,000 residents in new costs.

Without a share in provincial revenues, municipalities will be forced to hike property taxes and fees for families to cover the shortfall.

The Pallister government has cut municipal funding in the last two years and has failed to

live up to its promise of a “fair share, fair say” for municipalities. The Premier has frozen municipal operating funding for two years and has cut the Roads and Bridges Program by eighty-four per cent. Last year the Pallister government reneged on an agreement to cover half of the cost of public transit, forcing municipalities to increase fees for families and cut services.

“The Premier is calling for ‘all hands on deck’ to

balance the budget while he downloads costs onto municipalities. He’s more interested in picking fights with municipal leaders than working to make life more affordable for rural, urban and northern families,” said Kinew. “Real partnership is the ability to listen to communities and work together to find solutions. I am committed to building a strong partnership with municipalities for the benefit of all Manitobans.”

Seven projects totaling $2.2 million committed in October Over 35,000 people in six countries will benefit from seven projects totaling $2.2 million committed by Canadian Foodgrains Bank in October. The projects are being implemented by Foodgrains Bank members Development and Peace—Caritas Canada, Emergency Relief and Development Overseas,

Mennonite Central Committee Canada, Presbyterian World Service and Development, Tearfund Canada and World Renew, in collaboration with their local partners.

One project, through Presbyterian World Service & Development, is responding to a harsh drought in Afghanistan. In 2018,

two-thirds of the country received much less rain than usual, as well as limited snowfall. The end result is that water availability is greatly reduced. Wheat production was well-below average last year, and this year’s crop was no better.

Many families are struggling to access enough food and their situation is complicated by Afghanistan’s overall instability.

In response, PWS&D’s partner Community World Service Asia is providing 800 households (about 5,600 people) with f ive monthly transfers of cash they can use to buy food from local markets. The project total is $633,000.

A nother project, through Development and Peace—Caritas Canada and their partner Trocaire, is providing support to malnourished young children and pregnant and lactating mothers in the Gedo region of Somalia.

Serious f looding has caused extreme hardship for many families who were already struggling to access enough food. Many

people have been displaced from their homes, but there is nowhere safe for them to go, due to conf lict and general unrest.

Through the project, special fortif ied food is being provided for severely malnourished young children and pregnant and lactating women. These activities are part of a larger therapeutic feeding and nutrition clinic operated by Trocaire. In total, 4,200 people are benefitting through the project, which totals $377,000.

All projects committed in October: •A n agriculture and livelihoods and food assistance project in Burundi through Mennonite Central Committee Canada, totaling $422,000 million and benef itt ing 8,70 0 people.

Canadian Foodgrains Bank programs are undertaken with support from the Government of Canada.

See where you’re going. At this time of year, keeping windshields clear is essential so make sure windshield washer fluid is topped up and windows are

clear of snow and ice.

Allow more time to stop. Traction is reduced when roads are slippery it takes more time to come to a complete stop.

If you don’t have winter tires, it’s not too late to get them.

Leave more space Leave more space. Don’t tailgate at any time and remember that following distance should be increased when travelling at higher speeds or in poor visibility.
