A

A cry for help

t the end of last month, 12 municipalities in the Interlake and Parkland regions declared a state of agricultural emergency. After a second dry summer, where rainfalls measured about half of normal, cattle producers are facing feed shortages. The hardest hit municipalities– Alonsa, Armstrong, BifrostRiverton, Coldwell, Ethelbert, Fisher, Grahamdale, Lakeshore, McCreary, Ste. Rose, West Interlake and Woodlands– want to make sure senior levels of government understand the serious situation their residents are facing.

In the Municipality of McCreary, hay yields were a quarter to a fifth of average, and their situation isn’t unique. Not only were hay yields down, but the dry summer meant that many producers ran out of pasture and water, as dugouts and wells dried up.

The 12 municipalities are asking for support, in the form of programs to subsidize the purchase and transportation of feed, cost sharing on the digging of wells and dugouts and the ability to defer income on the sale of breeding animals. With two elections this fall, the creation of any new programs has been on hold.

While the recent rains have bought producers some time, reviving pastures and refilling dugouts, the clock is still ticking. In less than two months, the grazing season will be over and producers looking at their stack-yards will be making tough decisions. Younger producers are

However, older producers and those already thinking about exiting the industry will just sell and few will come back. It’s this possibility that has many municipalities worried, especially those, like McCreary and Ste. Rose, that have an older-than-average population.

Municipalities, and by extension the province, need a diversified agricultural sector. Not only to level out the uncertainty created by market cycles, weather and trade, but also because the province is made up of a variety of land types. Not all land is suitable for growing grain crops– which is why many parts of the Interlake and Parkland are considered “cattle country”, the land is ideally suited to this type of agriculture.

Through MASC and ag offices, the provincial government knows they have a problem and following the election this week, they need to get to work addressing it.

More than that, they need to let producers know early what, if any, support they can expect. Producers need to know in the next month if they have any additional options available to them, as they make their plans for winter. The announcement of a new program in December will be of little help to producers, who should be going into winter with their herd size matched to their available feed supply.

It’s a tough situation, hay is expensive because the province has been impacted by two dry years. Unfortunately, unlike years of f looding, this isn’t a localized problem and there are legitimate concerns about price gouging, fraud and speculation that must be considered with any support programs.

Each year, producers enter and exit the industry, but to see a widespread loss of cattle producers would be devastating to many rural communities and the businesses that rely upon them. Producers need to see some support to ensure the industry as a whole, and the rural communities where the producers live, don’t hollow out. Producers need to know immediately what will be available to them.

The challenges on the farm impact the entire province, even those who’ve never stepped outside the perimeter.

Now, it’s time for the province and country to acknowledge the challenges facing producers and the potential impact beyond the farm gate.

Some election observations

his week, my travel times coincided with the Tapestry broadcasts. Both programs that I listened to validated my beliefs and actions. Very rare and very lovely!

The first one that struck a chord with me regarded Sheridan Voysey’s view on “sacred inefficiencies”. The art of doing nothing; not quite, but really along that line. We need to play for the sake of playing, to refresh our body, mind and spirit.

There were several thoughts with which I strongly agreed. One being that God was having a fine time when the earth and all its inhabitants were created. Think of it– the giraffe, the platypus, opossums and you and me. Not many of us could have come up with half as many variants, even if given a lifetime!

God is a God of laughter and play, among many other attributes. Simply stopping, and being, is key to good mental health.

Voysey starts every day with a minimum of 10 minutes of ref lection – “I am a child of God. That is my first and primary identity.”

Honouring that tenet, he devotes the start of every day listening to and for God. He goes on to say that without sacred inefficiencies, human experience gets reduced to just work.

I admit that I am still learning to do nothing.

The two of them looked at each other, shook their heads, exclaimed that even when I thought I was doing nothing, I was still doing something. I admit that both of them were great at working hard and at sacred inefficiencies, and I am still learning.

The other broadcast explained to me why I spent/spend so much time on Tetris, a game my daughter-inlaw introduced me to ages ago. I have found that with condensing and expanding my living space on a regular basis, the images of blocks and rectangles all fitting together has been most helpful!

In this program the catch phrase is “f low state”– the ability to focus heavily on an activity, to the degree that all intrusions are blocked.

Entering into this state momentarily creates thought provoking zen.

Studies are showing that finding a f low state can be beneficial to individuals suffering from anxiety or post traumatic syndrome.

This f low state is almost hypnotic, a non stop activity that engages your brain so that you are constantly problem solving. It is a balance of challenge and skill, also found in gardening and painting. Another really nice thing about Tetris is that even if you lose a game, you can simply start another one. There are big bucks competitions for Tetris players today. All I know is that Nintendo version I played consumed hours of my time! That and Dr. Mario.

It was delightful when the grandchildren encouraged their friends to challenge me either game, and I whopped them!

There you have it; “sacred inefficiencies” and “f low state”. I got them!

f all the struggles I had during my years of active ministry, few were as hard to handle as those that surfaced when I was asked to help repair a dysfunctional relationship.

I am no expert when it comes to building and maintaining healthy relationships. I have made enough mistakes to fill a book. I can tell you what not to do. I am still learning how to avoid repeating some of the mistakes I have made in the past.

I have, however, learned that for relationships of any kind to remain healthy, two things are required–transparent honesty and awareness of what’s happening around us.

Honesty is the foundation of all strong relationships. When asked about anything– our health, our opinions on issues of the day, or how we feel about things that have been said to us or happened to us, we tell the truth. But in speaking the truth, we must follow St. Paul’s admonition to “speak the truth in love.” If we must express our disapproval of something another person has said or done, we focus on the words that have been spoken or the acts that have been done; and we share how those words or acts have made us feel. But we are never to speak those words in ways that show disrespect for the person to whom we speak.

Transparent honesty takes honesty to a higher level. To be transparently honest, we must speak the whole truth. We don’t hide anything from those to whom we speak. If we are asked for information or an opinion, we answer truthfully and completely.

Others may not like the answers we give, but if they are spoken “in love” as noted above, if in speaking we show respect to the listener and if we focus on actions that have harmed us or words that have hurt us, we have done our part. Nothing is ever gained by telling half-truths or withholding

Sometimes, we are the ones who will need to be transparently honest with others. But more often than not, others will need to be transparently honest with us. They will tell us how our words and actions have hurt them. We must listen!

From the moment we hear those words, God holds us responsible for what we do with the information we have received. He expects us to ref lect on it, identify hurtful words we have spoken or things we have done, apologize if necessary and do all we can, with God’s help to correct inappropriate behaviours.

From that point on, we must exercise immense self-control. God will use the words of others to teach us lessons we need to learn. But, like every good teacher, God gives examinations. We hear what others say, we apologize for our responses and act to correct our behavior. So far, so good– God is pleased.

But it won’t be too long before a similar situation presents itself and that is when we will know if the acts we have taken have corrected our mistakes, or just made us feel like they were corrected.

If we respond appropriately to this new challenge, we do well. If we don’t, God offers us his forgiveness and support as we relearn old lessons and learn new ones.

In this life, there are no guarantees. Anything can happen to anyone at any time. We must be always on the alert and seek, to the best of our abilities with God’s help, to respond appropriately to whatever life sends us.

I am writing in response to an article in the Sept.

5, edition of the Rivers Banner.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #75, along with the support of the Ladies Auxiliary, is an extremely valuable organization and our community is lucky to have them.

Branch #75, as with ever y L eg ion, is nonprof it and receives no funding from any level of government. They rely on membership dues, t he c lubroom, bi ngo, fund ra ising act iv it ies, and donations. Without these, the valuable programs that the Branch current ly runs and/or

supports would disappear.

The Branch is very active in local Veterans, senior, and youth programs.

How can members of the community help: You could become a member of t he Bra nch or t he Ladies Auxiliary. If that doesn't interest you, drop into the clubroom or speak to any member and simply ask "How can I help?"

Volunteers are always appreciated. Coming out and supporting the fundraising activities is a very easy way to support this valuable organization.

Ella’s Birthday

In September of 2018, Rivers Women’s Institute hosted a meeting on the subject of “Organ Donation”. Jaimee Waldner of Rivers was invited to speak about the importance of organ donation; her words were heartfelt and very persuasive. At the same time, she introduced us to her one-year old daughter, Ella, and described the tumult of Ella’s very short life. Since that time, Rivers WI members have followed Ella’s progress and celebrated every step forward.

From that day a year ago, the intention was to host a fundraiser so that we could offer this young family some

practical assistance.

The day is fast approaching! Saturday, Sept. 28, 2019, is Ella’s second birthday. On that day, Rivers WI is hosting a fundraiser event dubbed Ella’s Birthday Bazaar. The community is invited to drop into Friendship Hall at the United Church for cake and ice cream. Tables will be set up with various items for sale: books, produce, plants, baking and handmade articles.

All proceeds will be given to the Waldner Family to help with their Ella’s ongoing medical expenses.

There have been previous fundraisers for the Waldners, but WI members and others in the community

understand that Ella has continuing health issues and that all treatments and therapies come with a financial cost.

As the saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a child”. This is an opportunity for all in our “village” to contribute to the health and well-being of one small child. Jaimee and Kevin Waldner, Ella’s parents, appreciate everything that has been done for them.

They worry that they have received more than their share. The WI response to that is that while Ella has a need, this “village” will help.

Looking Back September 12, 1929 Wise traffic laws and safe highways are needed to give battle to the menace of traffic accidents, but they alone will not win the war. They are merely the advance guard and the main army consists of every automobile operator and every pedestrian–in fact every person young or old, that makes use of the public streets and highways.

September 14, 1939 Rivers Curling Club will hod a Novelty Jamboree in I.O.O.F Hall on Friday, Sept. 15, and a big crowd is expected to attend. Balloons, confetti and prize dances. Music provided by that popular musical aggregation, the Elkhorn Orchestra.

Member of the Girls’ softball team, who have made such a fine record this year, will be in attendance. Your presence will be a compliment to their playing prowess.

Don’t forget that the Curling Club is sponsoring

the event, so do your part towards helping this fine organization.

September 15, 1949 For members of the Manitoba provincial executive, Canadian air cadet league, met local officers of the Rivers unit, last Wednesday, at the Alexander hotel.

The meeting was attended by Flt. Lieut. R. Epp, liaison officer, J.M. McConachie, J. Williams, R. Vopni and W. Jewitt, all of Winnipeg.

The need was stressed for more air cadets, all over Canada. The movement was one which worked for the future good citizenship of young boys–and was not a military organization, as many people were inclined to regard it.

Where am I?

Rivers Elementary School Playground The photo in last week’s Banner was identified by Heather Gray as the playground structure at Rivers Elementary School.

Thank you to Heather for calling in and becoming involved with this article. I had the opportunity to meet with Heather and Sherri Dziver a few days later to obtain further information about the project to build this playground. Thank you for the information and photo.

Playground equipment that had previously been in use at Rivers Elementary School for many years was deemed unsafe in 2005 and demolition took place April 23, 2007. Concerned parents led by Heather Gray, Sherri Dziver and Betty MacDonald began meeting almost immediately to fill the void left by the removal of play equipment in the school yard. They soon formed a committee under the name Rivers Elementary Playground Structure Committee (REPS). Their goal was to raise the funds necessary to provide new play structures for the children of the community that would last for generations.

Over the next three years this committee put together an amazing 52 fundraising events! Everything from chocolate bar sales, massive yard sales, raffles, social evenings, BBQ lunches at RES during field days and hot lunches at RCI. These 19092DD0 three ladies, their husbands 19092DD1 and families worked tirelessly through family births and deaths to achieve their lofty goal of $85K.

Some of that money came in the form of grants from Community Places and Rivers and Area Community Foundation, personal donations close to $20K and work in kind from some local businesses and Rolling River School division. Angela Bartlett and Jackie Howard joined the original three members for a portion of those three years of fundraising. Countless hours were also spent by the committee in the form of researching equipment and policies as well as surveying the entire population of RES to see what they wanted in their playground.

The large free-standing orange Typhoon Slide was funded entirely by a donation from Michelle Budiwski and her family in memory of her late husband Corporal AAJ Gilbert (retired) who passed away in 2008.

Seventeen individual and unique playground pieces constructed of heavy-duty aluminium and galvanized steel covered with polyurethane were installed in the fall of 2010 with the ribbon cutting happening in October. In the end there was some money left over because the equipment came in the wrong colour. But the committee didn’t miss a beat, donating it back to Rivers Elementary School in the form of a new BBQ and Little Cesar’s Pizza party for the entire school.

It has now been nine years since the RES playground was rebuilt and many of the children who now regularly play there have never known a time when it did not exist. Let’s hope it can continue to entertain children throughout the community for many years. After all the time and energy these ladies put into the playground, all they ask is that everyone “Please respect our playground so it can last for generations to come.”

However, many more months of suffering occurred for the people of the Netherlands during the Hunger Winter, when people were reduced to eating tulip bulbs just to survive. Thousands of Dutch men, women and children perished of starvation and cold.

By early April, the First Canadian Army with help from Dutch resistance fighters began to clear the Germans from the Netherlands, canal by canal and house by house. Because of the hard work, courage and sacrifices of the Canadian and other Allied soldiers, the remaining German forces in the Netherlands surrendered on May 5, 1945. This was followed by all German forces surrendering on May 7th, 1945 which has been declared Victory in Europe (V-E) Day. In addition to help given by Canadians on the front line, members of the Dutch royal family also were given sanctuary in Canada during the War. Princess Margriet was born in Ottawa in 1943 and

these powerful connections helped form warm bonds of friendship and respect between the Dutch and Canadians which continues to this day. Evidence of this enduring connection may be seen in the tulips blooming in Ottawa each spring, as well as the care and attention bestowed by the Dutch people on the burial places of the war dead in the Netherlands.

The Canada Remembers Program, of Veterans Affairs Canada encourages all Canadians to learn about the sacrifices and achievements made by those who have served – and continue to serve –during times of war and peace. In 2015, in celebration of the 70th anniversary of liberation, the gift of tulips by the Dutch Royal Family, the Canadian Garden Council, in partnership

Ella’s Birthday Continued from page 4 Perhaps you don’t know Ella’s story. Jaimie has provided the following update: “Ella absolutely loves life! She loves to play, get into mischief, and practice her independence. She especially loves going outside for wagon rides around town to enjoy the fresh air, sights, and sounds. Ella has a rare genetic condition called Kabuki Syndrome that caused only half of her heart to develop (Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome).

This resulted in a six-month stay in an Edmonton hospi-

tal immediately after birth, undergoing t wo major heart surgeries (her first at 8 days old and her second at 4.5 months). Ella nearly lost her life on more than one occasion, but fought her way home. She came home on oxygen and tube feedings, and through a lot of hard work, patience, and perseverance, she is now accessory free and enjoying her freedom from it. We are uncertain if or when Ella’s next open heart surgery may be, but she is closely followed by her cardiology team in Winnipeg. Kabuki Syndrome has played a role in Ella’s development.

She is working very hard to learn new skills every day, including her most recent accomplishment of bum scooting around our house. Ella continues to go to private therapy called ABM (Anat Baniel Method) that targets brain connectivity. She participates in intensive four-day lessons every 6-8 weeks.

We have seen tremendous progress through it and are excited to see where ABM will take Ella.”

Like all children, Ella is precious. Come out on September 28th and show your support for her and her family.
